LEADERSHIP WITH A LASTING IMPACT This summer, Dr. Helen J. Streubert will retire from her position as president of Saint Elizabeth University.

As we prepare to bid her farewell, we can’t help but look back at all she accomplished over the last eight years. During her tenure, SEU underwent a period of dramatic growth, including countless renovations to academic and recreational spaces; the decision to become fully coeducational; the development of new bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs; and transitioning from the College of Saint Elizabeth to Saint Elizabeth University.

While Dr. Streubert may physically be leaving Saint Elizabeth, her legacy will remain infinitely tied to the future success of our institution. Like Sr. Pauline Kelligar, Sr. Marie José Byrne, Sr. Hildegarde Marie Mahoney, Sr. Elizabeth Ann Maloney, Sr. Jacqueline Burns and Sr. Francis Raftery before her, Dr. Helen J. Streubert has left her own indelible mark on Saint Elizabeth University.

Dear SEU Community: It is with pride and gratitude that I prepare my last column for the University magazine. I am so proud of all that we have accomplished together in the eight years of my tenure as president of this incredible institution. When I look out my office window and appreciate our green spaces, I think of rebirth, new life and the promise of a bright future. These are the tangible signs of our work.

In eight short years together, we have built new academic majors, renovated existing spaces, increased undergraduate enrollment, honed our value proposition, illuminated our mission, advanced the University’s commitment to Catholic social teaching, strengthened our commitment to diversity and inclusion, met our fundraising goals, grown our athletic programs and become a University. These are just some of the seeds of a bright tomorrow.

I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees, the faculty, staff, students, alumni, University friends and the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, who have contributed to the University as we advanced an aggressive agenda of hope and promise.

Our students come to us craving the opportunity to create a better life for themselves and for those they plan to serve. When we watch them walk the stage at graduation, the sense of promise we observe is palpable. We all know that they will do well, and we can feel proud that each one of us has contributed in some important way to making their lives better. This is the spirit of the University that feeds our souls every day.

As I reflect on the time I have spent with many of you, I think of YOUR stories of hope and promise, and YOUR vision of your educational home. I hear YOUR experiences on campus.

I think of YOUR commitments to assuring that Saint Elizabeth continues to provide the highquality education offered in an environment of care. And I think of those faculty and staff who gave to you. YOUR experiences are fixed in our history and provide the foundation for the University’s future.

Thank you to each of you for your love, support and caring during my tenure. I will miss the people and the work that I have been blessed to serve. I will hold this wonderful place and all of you in my heart forever. I trust that you will offer the new president, Dr. Gary Crosby, the same welcome and commitments you provided me and walk beside him to continue the proud tradition of Saint Elizabeth University!

CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2021!

While this institution has had 119 commencement ceremonies, the Class of 2021 is the first to graduate under the name Saint Elizabeth University. This dynamic class consists of students from all over the United States and the world, including Colombia,

Poland, Egypt, Pakistan, Vietnam and more. The first woman to graduate with a degree in sport management and marketing and the first person to earn a master’s in digital media design and marketing are also members of this class.

Justin Geary, Communication, ’21 JUSTIN GEARY (pictured above) is the third person in his family to attend SEU. His grandmother earned her undergraduate education degree in 1966, while his mother completed her master’s in management in 2019. After attending college elsewhere and choosing not to return after his sophomore year, Justin felt directionless.

“I honestly thought I was never going to finish college,” recalls Justin. “I figured that I wasn’t cut out for it or that it just wasn’t meant for me, so I started working to support myself.”

We can make a difference in the future, guided by the education and the values we received here at Saint Elizabeth University.”

Just one week before the semester began in January of 2019, Justin decided to apply to SEU after hearing about his mother’s and grandmother’s experiences. Still uncertain about whether or not he could complete his bachelor’s, Justin decided to trust his advisors.

“Each and every one of my professors provided me with great knowledge and was always there for me when I needed them the most,” says Justin. “SEU made me realize that it’s not only important to be a great student, but also to be a great leader, mentor and influencer.”

Justin even inspired his little brother Tim to attend SEU as well, and he will be graduating in 2024.

CONTI NUING TO SERVE Nada Mays Uses Her Education to Improve Community Health “I joined the Peace Corps to better understand the world,” explains NADA MAYS, ’21, who served in the Kingdom of eSwatini, a small landlocked country in the southern region of Africa. “As a Black and Palestinian person, I am very aware of how some regions of the world are portrayed in a falsely negative light.”

While living in eSwatini for two years, Nada gained firsthand experience with the HIV pandemic. When she returned to the U.S., she was offered a position with a local community agency. In this role, she worked with incarcerated residents who were about to be released and counseled them about living with HIV. “Being released after 30 years can be like stepping into a whole new world because long terms of incarceration leave residents with large gaps of knowledge,” explains Nada. “It’s important that they know how to stay safe and what resources are available to support them in staying healthy.”

She would spend her days helping these individuals living with HIV gain access to community-based organizations that could provide long-term support.

Additionally, she would help them make doctor’s appointments, submit documentation for housing, apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and help them with emergency assistance.

“This work really opened my eyes to the prejudice and stigma people face during and after incarceration,” says Nada.

Interested in continuing to build a career in public health, Nada decided to enter SEU’s master’s in nutrition/dietetic internship program. She was drawn to the community and public health nutrition curriculum because it covered the social determinants of health, such as systemic racism.

But Nada’s interest in the field of nutrition has a more personal beginning.

“I grew up in a home where we made everything from scratch. My childhood friends used to come over and eat the Palestinian dishes my mom prepared.

As I grew older, I found cooking to be therapeutic,” says Nada. “I earned my master’s because I want to spread nutrition education and promote health equity in underserved communities.”

REVAMPED HONO RS PROGRAM ALLOW S FOR THREE-YEAR DEGREE OPTION

Saint Elizabeth University’s newly revamped honors program is designed for high-achieving students whose scholastic record indicates superior aptitude in scholarly research and writing. To be admitted to the honors program, students must have and maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

This enhanced learning will develop a student’s practical and academic skills while offering them highly marketable experiences and trainings.

They will have access to accelerated learning opportunities that involve the possibility of graduating in three years, be able to participate in professional academic conferences, gain access to competitive internships and attend classes that encourage students to embrace new perspectives, critically evaluate data, effectively communicate complex ideas and become lifelong learners.

“The honors program at SEU helps high-achieving, highly motivated students develop their public

voice, cultivate strong research and communication skills, and become servant leaders,” says Dr. Nicole Yanoso, director of the program. “It seeks to keep students energized and motivated with academically challenging classes, competitive internships, exciting experiential learning opportunities and comprehensive career preparation exercises.”

GRANT FUNDS DEGREE OPTIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS The National Endowment for the Humanities recently awarded Saint Elizabeth University a $30,000 grant to develop a minor and certification in environmental ethics.

While there is a growing trend in higher education to invest in STEM-related programs, humanities remain valued at SEU. The creation of this minor will strengthen the recognition of the humanities, which are essential to developing in students an understanding of the importance of a shared global community.

Some of these issues affect the poor disproportionately, and environmental racism remains a persistent problem in the United States. Developing an interdisciplinary minor in environmental ethics at SEU will bring a multitude of diverse voices to the field.

Students who enroll in the programs will leave SEU equipped with the tools of philosophy, science, religion, law and critical thinking, all in the service of making the world a better place for all God’s creatures.

“Few issues are as pressing and prevalent as the state of the environment. On the one hand, exploring and addressing our human-centered mindset is important for the well-being of the earth’s ecosystems,” explains Ryan McLaughlin, theology professor at SEU. “But even aside from this aim, there are many issues of human justice at work here. We want to provide students with the tools to address the pressing issues posed by environmental ethics in whatever career path they choose.”

SAINT ELIZABETH UNIVERSITY EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT WITH ESPORTS SEU is launching a comprehensive esports program that includes a newly constructed state-of-the-art gaming facility, varsity and recreational teams and additions to the University’s curriculum that focus on the growing field of gaming.

The program begins in fall 2021 with the opening of the esports arena that will enable all students to gather in a supercharged gaming environment.

The University also is offering a newly created Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering with a concentration in Game Development and Design, and competition with its first varsity esports team in fall 2022.

The University is currently working with students to determine what games to include and plans to hire a varsity coach. The newly constructed arena also includes space for students who enjoy watching and/ or playing recreationally, with the idea of creating a campus “hub.”

“We’re entering a new era and embracing different ways to promote student engagement, support inclusivity and help students succeed,” said Katherine M. Buck, SEU’s vice president for student life. “We are excited about the commitment we’ve made to esports and hope that our new program will attract students to our institution, engage all students across our campus and build a highly competitive team in the esports industry.”

According to Jake Zinn, co-founder of esports Supply, a company that is working with Saint Elizabeth University to design its program, esports is forecast to be a $9 billion segment within the $200 billion gaming industry by 2025.

“Esports is one of the most popular activities students are engaging with on campuses today, with more than 350 colleges and universities across the country having taken the plunge into competitive esports,” Zinn added.

ATHLETICS Eagles Play Despite Pandemic While fall sports were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Saint Elizabeth University’s women’s softball, men’s baseball and men’s volleyball programs were able to have a regular season. In fact, SEU’s women’s softball team earned its first playoff victory in the program’s history!

Coaches Help Student Actualize Childhood Dream BRITTANY DEMAREST, ’21, has been playing softball competitively since she was seven years old. Her time on travel and showcase teams exposed Brittany to invaluable lessons about persistence and comraderie. Despite being a solid shortstop and second baseman, Brittany’s raw talent did not come as naturally as it did to her other teammates.

“I was never a standout player, so I wasn’t even sure that I would be able to continue playing softball in college, but that didn’t stop me from giving everything that I had each game,” explains Brittany.

Recognizing Brittany’s passion for the game, coaches from Saint Elizabeth University encouraged her to play softball at SEU. As an NCAA Division III institution, SEU coaches were able to work side by side with Brittany, helping her polish her skills and achieve her dream of playing collegiate softball. At the end of her sophomore year, Brittany was named captain of the team, fulfilling the dream she set out to accomplish as a child.

In May of 2021, Brittany became the first woman to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management and Marketing. After graduating, she plans to earn her master’s degree to ultimately turn her passion for sports into a profession by working for ESPN.

A CYCLE OF SUPPORT Psychology Graduate Student Counsels Undergrads Social isolation, shifting dynamics in relationships and stress caused by COVID-19 has had a major impact on the mental health of our students, but MARIANNE MIDDLEBROOK, ’22, is determined to help.

“Students are dealing with the loss of the educational climate they once knew, difficulties with online learning and generally just feeling overwhelmed,” explains Marianne, a second-year doctoral student in SEU’s counseling psychology program. “They’re just grieving how life used to be, and it’s difficult to process.”

Currently completing her first practicum at the University’s Wellness Center, Marianne sees roughly 15 SEU students a week for individual counseling and hosts a variety of events throughout the semester.

These services allow students to develop the tools necessary to manage stress, reduce anxiety and navigate a host of mental health challenges free of charge.

“I don’t have much interaction with the undergraduate students outside of therapy, so I’ve enjoyed getting to know some of them,” says Marianne. “It’s nice to meet

people I wouldn’t have otherwise met and gives me a chance to work with a population I haven’t worked with yet.”

While earning her master’s in social work, Marianne practiced in the detox unit of a psychiatric hospital.

Prior to her practicum at SEU and taking a position as a telehealth counselor, Marianne’s experience predominately centered around those struggling with addiction. However, her interest in psychology is not limited to these conditions, and she wants to learn as much as possible before leaving the University.

“I’ve always known that I wanted to be a therapist ever since I was young because I’ve always been the advice giver and the peacekeeper,” recalls Marianne.

“I’m also a wheelchair user, so I’ve gotten a lot of help from a lot of people in my life, and becoming a therapist is my way of giving back.”

Born with spinal muscular atrophy, Marianne’s condition has shaped her perspective on life. It has taught her how to be patient with herself, how to accept help from others and how to have seemingly endless compassion for those around her.

“I tend to see the glass half full because I’ve had my fair share of health issues and I’ve learned to appreciate what I have in life,” says Marianne. “I can recognize the good parts because I’ve seen the bad ones.”

Her compassion, personality and lived experience, coupled with her dedication to psychology and hard work, have made Marianne the ideal candidate to become a counselor.

SUMMER SCHOLARS A Jump-Start to Lifelong Lessons “I didn’t even know that I had the ability to lead inside of me before the Summer Scholars program,” says CAMRIN CRONHEIM, ’21, a computer software engineering major. “It showed me how much I can accomplish if I just set my mind to it.”

Designed to help students adjust to the rigors of college, this two-week program utilizes intensive learning, peer mentorship and guidance from faculty and staff to ensure student success. The program’s intensity is geared toward two distinctive types of students: those who want a head start on their education and those who need a little extra support transitioning between high school and college.

CINDY PEREZ, ’21, and her twin sister CAROL, ’21, are first-generation college students who joined the Summer Scholars program for guidance. After going through the program her freshman year, Cindy returned to it as a peer mentor. She was able to pass on invaluable skills to other students, such as time management, self-awareness, conflict management and decision making.

It’s the reason I’ve been able to stay in college and focus on my future,” explains Cindy, a criminal justice major and psychology minor. “Many of my family and friends have passed away during my time at SEU, and Lynne McEniry (the former director of Summer Scholars) worked extremely closely with me to make sure I stayed on the right path when times got hard. For this reason, I want to set an example for other students to show we can all get through hard times, and I’m here if they ever need help.”

“Some students even call me their school mom,” explains Lynne McEniry, English professor and former director of the Summer Scholars program. “They will text or email at 2 a.m. if they are having a hard time... they know I am there for them no matter what and that their success is central to me, as it is with all of our SEU students.”

“I’m still involved in this program because the Summer Scholars family has helped me and my

ABOVE AND BEYOND Student Teaching in the Pandemic GILLIAM OJEDIS-LUCAS, ’20, began her clinical practice in student teaching during the height of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

With stringent health and safety guidelines in place, this experience was vastly different than any of her prior observations.

As a first-time elementary school teacher, Gilliam was tasked with replicating an environment conducive to learning without the ability to provide hands-on instruction or group study. Suddenly, everything she knew about teaching had to be adapted to fit this new learning format.

“It was difficult because you can’t get too close to the students, so they can’t get that one-on-one attention,” explains Gilliam. “We had to get creative with balancing the educational and social needs of our students with health concerns.”

Each day, the students would spend four hours in the classroom covering the basics of reading, writing and mathematics before returning home for continued virtual instruction. While this schedule was challenging, Gilliam watched as her fellow teachers

went above and beyond for their students, and she modeled herself after their example.

“Whenever the other teachers at the school found out that I was doing my student teaching, they would all respond in the same way,” says Gilliam. “They would look shocked and say, ‘You’re doing it now?

Well, you’re definitely going to be ready when you’re finished.’ And they were right, I was ready.”

Shortly after Gilliam’s clinical practice ended, she was hired as a full-time first grade teacher and presented with another unique challenge: teaching entirely online. However, she credits her students’ digital literacy and good listening skills with making it an easy transition.

“I love seeing those ‘oh wow’ moments where you’re teaching students and they finally get it,” says Gilliam.

A desire to teach has been part of Gilliam’s identity ever since she was a little girl. In fact, Gilliam and her childhood best friend would always play school together. However, the pair would invariably get into disagreements over who got to be the teacher because of how desperately Gilliam wanted to play the role each time.

“When I was finishing high school and wondering what I was going to do for a career, I started thinking about what I enjoyed as a child,” explains Gilliam. “That’s when I decided to be a teacher.”
