Our success can be attributed to the collective efforts of the Board of Trustees, alumnae/i, students, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

These are truly extraordinary times for Saint E’s, and I am honored to be at the helm.

In this edition of our magazine, you will read about the University’s efforts to scale up its commitment to student success, which includes securing competitive grants and renovated spaces, including the newly created Student Success Center in Mahoney Library. The two wings encompassing the library’s first floor provide a welcoming environment for students to gather, learn and network.

Additionally, this fall, the University will launch a new general education curriculum that seeks to equip and empower students as leaders. Students will benefit from cohort-based seminars that help build community and shared knowledge. Subsequent courses offer essential knowledge and skills in areas such as communication and media literacy, qualitative and quantitative approaches to information, critical thinking and holistic self-awareness.

This magazine also celebrates staff members, elected officials and community partners vital to our accelerated approach to student success. You will also read about alumnae/i who are putting their Saint E’s education to excellent use and excelling in their professions.

SEU Announces the Launch of New M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology Program From hospitals, schools, nursing homes and a multitude of other settings, certified speech-language pathologists assist various patients who have communication or swallowing disorders. It is a career that merges seamlessly with the University’s vision of upholding social responsibility and commitment to diversity, reflecting the institution’s focus on the health sciences.

Kim Sabourin, SLP program director and assistant professor, shares more on the exciting new plans for the program and its holistic goals.

“The area of study sits within the University’s mission in several ways,” Sabourin says. “Specifically, the SLP program creates new paths for people who want to serve others and fits quite naturally with existing SEU programs, such as Nursing, Foods and Nutrition and Physician Assistant.”

Kim Sabourin, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-F Assistant Professor and Program Director of Saint Elizabeth University’s M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology Program This past year, Saint Elizabeth University announced the development of a new Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (SEU MS-SLP) program.

Designed to offer comprehensive, innovative and accessible programming, the newest addition to SEU’s graduate-level programs prepares students for a rewarding career that offers a wide range of possibilities.

With the first cohort expected to start in fall 2025, the two-year graduate program will be structured as a hybrid format with academic courses offered online and clinical courses offered in person. The University will also begin to offer a series of prerequisite and post-baccalaureate classes that aim to prepare undergraduate and postgraduate students for the master’s program.

Prior to her time at SEU, Sabourin spent 17 years as a faculty member of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Temple University, where she also served as Director of the Speak Now Camp for Adolescents who Stutter. She brings vast knowledge and expertise in clinical supervision and has become one of the driving forces in the program’s development.

As the program’s development continues to progress, Sabourin encourages individuals who may be interested in the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program, or related post-baccalaureate courses, to reach out for more information. Offering a Well-Rounded Academic Experience: SEU’s General Education Program Revamp This year, Saint Elizabeth University revised its General Education Program to actively engage undergraduate students through a series of courses covering essential skill-based knowledge, while also meeting the requirements set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

Rooted in the Catholic liberal arts tradition, the redesigned comprehensive general education programming aims to provide SEU students with the essential hard and soft skills needed in order to gain a well-rounded academic experience.

“Unlike the prior approach, the new courses are rooted in offerings from different academic programs.

With an eye toward a structure that is dynamic and flexible, new courses will be added as developed and some, on occasion, will be removed,” says Anthony B. Santamaria, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Core skill areas in which students are assessed include writing, math, scientific reasoning, media literacy, communication, critical thinking, global perspectives, the human condition and ethical reasoning and action.

There is an array of courses students can choose from to not only fulfill these core skill requirements, but experience new and interesting classes. From the Fundamentals of Biology, to Public Speaking and exploring Women of the Bible and Beyond, students have the option to take classes with different focus areas and perspectives.

As a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), the new program ensures that students from all backgrounds can receive critical foundational knowledge. The program is also structured to span the four-year student journey beyond their selected field of study.

Transforming the Future Through Environmental Ethics Empowering students to become agents of positive change has always been a common thread woven throughout SEU’s curriculum. As environmental ethics becomes a standard practice across all industries and career types, Saint Elizabeth University will be offering the area of study as a minor to interested students, starting this academic year.

The goal of the minor is to equip students with the knowledge they need in order to tackle environmental ethics dilemmas in an innovative and effective way. The program will be overseen by Chair of the Department of Religious Studies Ryan McLaughlin, Ph.D., alongside Kim Grant, Ph.D., Director of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, with the intention of providing an interdisciplinary approach,

According to McLaughlin, environmental ethics issues such as climate change, deforestation, species loss and environmental racism would be best analyzed by studying both areas of the sciences and humanities.

“Philosophy and religion give us cultural perspectives, ancient wisdom, and moral language to address questions about right and wrong, good and bad,” says McLaughlin. “Science can’t really do this. But science gives us the crucial element of depicting reality in a way that is reliable. Science tells us what’s really going on out there. Philosophy and religion tell why we ought to care and what we ought to do about it.”

SEU students with a minor in Environmental Ethics will take courses such as “Ecological Science” (ES102), “Living as Nature” (REL115) and “Survey of Global History” (HIS110).

Not only will the program encourage students to develop new perspectives, but it will also promote marketable skill sets that are valuable to employers in today’s professional landscape.

How SEU’s Holocaust and Genocide Education Center Is Preparing a Generation of Global Leaders It is hard for many of us to fully comprehend the senseless horror and cruelty millions of Holocaust and genocide victims faced throughout the course of history. Though these genocides are unimaginable, the first steps toward the reconciliation and prevention of such horrific atrocities can be unlocked with one very fundamental key – education.

For years, Saint Elizabeth University’s Holocaust and Genocide Education Center has aimed to provide resources, curriculum, events and opportunities for SEU’s students, as well as members of the surrounding community. Richard Quinlan, Ph.D., took on the role of the Center’s director last summer and has since worked tirelessly to uphold its mission.

I wanted to feel that I could, even in the most minute way, do something to educate others and try to avoid these horrors from happening again.

After spending nearly three decades in the classroom, Dr. Quinlan’s professional journey was altered in 2016 when he was selected for the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers Program. As one of 24 educators from the United States, Quinlan spent two weeks in Germany and Poland studying the Holocaust and visiting locations of historic significance.

Soon after this experience, he received his doctoral degree in holocaust and genocide studies from Gratz College in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, defending his dissertation on the need for transitional justice and reconciliation in post-genocide Burundi.

While the area of study may not be an uplifting one, its significance is astronomical. Quinlan’s curriculum deeply analyzes the causes and consequences of the world’s most brutal massacres. His class titled “Genocides in Africa” explores several tragic cases amongst specific African countries. This includes formerly German South West Africa (modern-day Namibia), Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan and Somalia.

Although it is possibly one of the most well-known genocides to take place in recent history, many Americans are still unaware of the atrocities that took place in Rwanda in 1994. According to Quinlan, approximately 800,000 people were killed in Rwanda over the span of 100 days.

“Unfortunately, Africa has endured more genocides than any other area in the world,” says Quinlan. “The question is, ‘why Africa?’ Other areas have of course endured genocide, but what is it about Africa that has led to this kind of instability in mass killing?”

During the semester, his class examines the connections between the legacy of colonialism in Africa and mass violence. The lasting ramifications of such brutality sadly persists to this day. With this in mind, students in Quinlan’s class also take a close look at nations that are currently suffering and may be on the verge of violence, including Chad, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

“These situations are unpleasant and unstable,” states Dr. Quinlan. “The final component of the class is to look at what steps toward justice and reconciliation can be taken, so these countries can begin to, not forget, but move past some of the darkness of their histories.”

The Center’s mission is straightforward – to instill a greater sense of concern and passion for world events through a series of guest speakers and educational opportunities.

SEU Celebrates the C ST the 121 Commence

In May, Saint Elizabeth University held its 121st Commencement Ceremony on campus, with some 2,000 graduates and guests in attendance. The event marked the first on-campus celebration in six years and saw the conferral of more than 350 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

To open the ceremony, SEU President Gary B. Crosby, Ph.D., commended the graduates on their hard work and outstanding accomplishments. In his speech, Crosby acknowledged the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, the University’s foundresses who established its mission to provide accessible higher education to those in greatest need.

“We are here today because of the Sisters’ love, care and commitment to improving the quality of one’s life through education,” Crosby said.

A notable 54% of graduates among the Class of 2023 received honors designations this year. During the ceremony, student speakers were selected to represent both the undergraduate and graduate classes. Receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management & Marketing, Student

“I decided to come to SEU for two main reasons, the honors program and to play volleyball. But now that I’m leaving, I realize there are so many other things for which I came here,” Peters said. “Remember that our experiences are what shape us into unique individuals. Every moment, interaction, success and failure helped mold us into the people we are today.”

Representing graduates who received their master’s or doctoral degrees, Meredith Palmer, ‘23, who obtained a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, challenged her fellow graduates to determine what kind of leader they will become.

“When thinking of this response, know that Saint Elizabeth nurtured, taught and provided the

foundational elements of the leaders that brought about monumental change,” said Palmer. “Change empowers us to stand up for the injustices and critical issues that impede forward movement in our communities, our country and today’s world.”

Secretary of Higher Education for the State of New Jersey Brian Bridges, Ph.D., spoke as this year’s guest Commencement speaker. As a first-generation college student, he reflected on the incredible impact education made on his personal life, leaving all attendees with words of encouragement and motivation.

The academic year was marked with significant achievements for the institution as a whole. SEU Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth M. Reny, ‘69, addressed the graduates and reflected on the number of acknowledgements, newly launched programs and awards the University received during the year.

On behalf of the entire SEU community, Crosby charged the graduates to “soar high above the rest and change the world while doing so.”

Soaring High in Athletics

During a historic year for Saint Elizabeth University athletics, multiple teams and athletes achieved significant accomplishments in both the fall and spring seasons.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Korrissa Aguilar, the SEU Women’s Softball team secured its first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship win.

Celebrating the remarkable achievement this past May, the 2023 Conference Champs at SEU made their mark on the institution’s history.

In fall, the Women’s Soccer team shattered five team records, including most wins, most goals, single-game goals, shutouts and best goal differential.

Likewise, the Men’s Soccer team also had an impressive season, earning a stop in the conference playoffs and receiving a postseason berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament.

The Men’s Volleyball team was also invited to play in the ECAC volleyball tournament this past spring, while SEU’s Baseball team earned back-to-back playoff berths for the first time in the program’s history.

Destiny Battle, a rising junior and member of SEU’s Women’s Basketball team, demonstrated excellence as she ranked first in the CSAC conference and fourth in Division III for triple doubles and steals this past season. Averaging 17 points and seven rebounds, Destiny’s exceptional performance and commitment to her team have garnered well-deserved recognition.

Lastly, Men’s Tennis completed its season with the best overall record since its inaugural year in 2018. Scoring four team wins and 24 individual wins, the team completed 14 matches overall, more than in any other season.

Throughout the years, SEU’s athletics department has made a positive impact on countless student-athletes.

By promoting transferable life skills and building a strong sense of school pride, the University is eager to see what next year has in store for our SEU Eagles.

Success Stories from Students GIANNA MIR AGIL A , ‘23 “SEU gave me so many opportunities that have allowed me to accomplish things I never thought I could do,” says Gianna Miragila, ‘23.

EZEKIEL SABB, ‘25 When Ezekiel Sabb, ‘25, suffered a basketball injury that sidelined him for his first season at SEU, he found an alternative way to participate and express his love for the sport. Now a rising junior, Ezekiel has become an integral member of the campus community as a student photographer.

“I was taking a photography class as a freshman and one day while I was watching the team practice, I decided to pick up my camera and take a few photos,” he says. “After that, my love for photography grew.”

Ezekiel and his camera have been inseparable ever since. With a particular passion for sports photography, Ezekiel spends most of his time outside the classroom working collaboratively with the athletics department, capturing all of our SEU Eagles in action.

“When I’m taking photos during a game, I feel all of the emotions the team feels because I’m right there with them,” he explains. “I think it’s the athlete in me, but I feel the energy of the game and it’s contagious.”

What initially started out as a hobby quickly turned into a genuine aspiration. The more Ezekiel became involved, the more his skills as a photographer developed. He recently began working with SEU’s Communications and Marketing department, covering photography for various events on campus. Studying art with a minor in business, Ezekiel hopes to turn his passion into a career.

“I have the chance to tell stories through photos and show the world what I see,” Ezekiel shares. “If it wasn’t for my injury, I would have never picked up the camera. If I had never made the team at SEU, I would have never learned what it is I love to do.”

Gianna’s hard work is nothing short of extraordinary.

Since her junior year, she has taken part in several internship opportunities within the disciplines of psychology and criminal justice. As a double major, minoring in victim services, Gianna plans to work toward a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology.

“I first interned as a neurofeedback technician for Psychotherapy Associates in 2021, where we provided non-medicated treatment for patients with anxiety, depression and OCD,” says Gianna. “During that time, I also began interning at the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office in their Special Victims Unit.”

Going above and beyond, Gianna decided to continue pursuing new opportunities, acquiring a diverse and impressive portfolio of work. Throughout the summer of 2022, she shadowed caseworkers at the New Jersey Department of Children and Family, allowing her to go out into the field and gain firsthand experience. She also continued to work with nonprofit organizations, advocating for the protection of individuals facing domestic abuse.

“I’ve always wanted to help people and I’ve always known I wanted to pursue a career where I can make a difference in people’s lives,” Gianna explains. “My professors and staff at SEU helped me realize the many opportunities out there where I can achieve my goals.”

Gianna was invited back to continue working at the Prosecutor’s Office during her senior year. Combining what she learned in the classroom and on the job, Gianna hopes to become a detective in the future.

As a first-generation college student, Gianna says that her passion and remarkable work ethic stem from family.

“I was raised by a single mother who didn’t have the opportunity to go to college,” says Gianna. “When I came to SEU, I knew I wanted to make her proud, and I can say that SEU gave me every opportunity to do so.”

STUDENT SUCCESS

SEU Honors Students’ Success The Honors Program at Saint Elizabeth University offers enhanced curriculum and extracurricular activities for students who are highly motivated and who have demonstrated an exemplary academic record. Over the 2022-2023 academic year, SEU’s honors students soared to even greater heights and took part in a variety of new ventures.

During the fall semester, 40 students within the program earned certificates from the first SEU Honors FBI Collegiate Academy. During this time, agents met with the students and provided comprehensive training on agency matters. The Academy also served as a networking opportunity for those interested in internships with the agency.

The Honors Program seeks to provide its students a transformational experience and to equip them with the tools, expertise, and global perspective necessary to succeed in their careers and beyond.

In December, the students also made individual presentations at the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.

This past spring semester, nine SEU honors students presented at the 2023 Northeast Regional Honors Conference in Pittsburgh. The annual undergraduate conference welcomed students from over 200 colleges and universities in the region.

Throughout the year, students also had the chance to work on projects about which they feel personally passionate. In January, honors student Thalia Gavilenes, ‘23, coordinated and founded the Women’s and LGBTQ+ Rights and Equality Conference (WREC).

With more than 100 attendees present, the dynamic event featured 18 presenters, 16 of which were students from SEU and neighboring universities.

“The Honors Program seeks to provide its students a transformational experience and to equip them with the tools, expertise, and global perspective necessary to succeed in their careers and beyond,” added Yanoso, who is also associate professor of history.

Nicole Yanoso, Ph.D., director of the Honors Program at SEU, emphasized the program’s commitment to preparing its students for life after graduation.

What Is the Saint El Student Succ Saint Elizabeth University has long been known and recognized for its commitment and dedication to students, be they traditional undergraduates, adult learners or graduate students. That’s why we are so proud of the next evolution of our student success journey.

The newly revamped Student Success Center (SSC), located on the first floor of Mahoney Library, was strategically restructured this

past academic year. One year into the launch of the renovated and expanded center, the space has become a lively and robust hub of students, faculty and staff.

Armed with the purpose of creating a one-stopshop experience, the SSC offers assistance the students of today need to achieve their academic and career goals. Through a

A few of the Center’s offerings include professional academic advising, tutoring, mentorship opportunities, career and internship services, and volunteerism and

College can be a challenging experience for anyone, especially those who may be first-generation students.

Our professional advisors focus on each student’s individual needs, whether that may be with selecting an area of study, planning which courses to take or exploring future career opportunities. Meet SEU’s Dean of Student Success: Dr. Delores Sarfo-Darko Farmer “We are here to cheer our students on, guide them in the right direction and remind them that they belong here,” says Dean of Student Success Delores SarfoDarko Farmer, Ed.D. Sarfo-Darko Farmer helps coordinate the overall SSC experience, including working one-on-one with students to increase inclusivity, engagement and achievement on campus.

SEU is making sure that students realize their academic and personal potential. By streamlining services and taking a comprehensive approach, students are provided with the support they may need in order to thrive. Dean of Student Affairs David M. Hill Jr., Ed.D., shares how this has already made a significant impact on the campus community.

“Since the Center launched, the campus has become more lively due to the renovations of the Mahoney Library. Students feel even more appreciated and supported, but more confident in themselves as well,” Hill shares.

In order to soar high and achieve success after graduation, the institution is dedicated to ensuring that students are ready to take on their future endeavors, preparing the next generation of leaders.

STUDENT SUCCESS

BR AD MAHONE Y ‘24 From his first year at SEU, Brad Mahoney, ‘24, made it his goal to become an involved member of the campus community. Since then, his mindset has helped to inspire others, both in and out of the classroom.

“Since I started college during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned how important it is to get involved as much as possible,” he shares. “I encourage other students all of the time to branch out and try new things. College is the time to grow and pursue what we are interested in.”

From his work with the Student Government Association, to his involvement with the men’s volleyball team, Brad has become a friendly face to many around campus. His determination to make the most out of his academic journey does not go unnoticed. Studying both biochemistry and business administration, Brad says that the professors he had helped him uncover new passions and encouraged him to take on various challenges.

“Dr. Grant, one of the biochemistry professors at SEU, showed me that I was capable of studying biochemistry and I began to find how much I really enjoyed learning it,” says Brad. “I also hope to one day have my own business, so combining the two felt like a good fit for me.”

As one of SEU’s Presidential Scholarship recipients, Brad represents a group of SEU students who embrace the University’s value of academic excellence. Brad says that receiving the scholarship and attending college at SEU have already made an impact on what’s to come.

“I want to set up a good future for myself, and for the people around me. I want to make sure that I take on a career I enjoy,” Brad says. “For me, the sense of community at SEU stands out compared to other schools. The people I have surrounded myself with have all encouraged me to work hard.”

Elected Officials on Campus This past year, Saint Elizabeth University had the privilege of hosting a number of legislators on campus, including Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, Assemblyman Reginald Atkins, Assemblywoman Linda Carter and Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, among several distinguished leaders in education.

During their visit to campus, the legislators had the opportunity to meet SEU students and toured the University’s state-of-the-art facilities, such as the medical simulation center and IDEA lab.

President Gary B. Crosby, Ph.D., met with all of the visiting leaders, addressing important issues that have recently made an impact on the local community.

University leadership also shared more on SEU’s overarching mission, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to all of its students.

As SEU remains dedicated to fulfilling its role as a leading institution within the community, the University recognizes the importance of maintaining relationships with community leaders, showcasing all the campus has to offer.

Supporting and Empowering Student Success Saint Elizabeth University was the recipient of multiple grants totaling more than $2 million during the 2022-2023 academic year. These grants have supported the University’s priority of promoting, fostering, and enhancing academic and research success and excellence across the campus community. This funding has played a crucial role in SEU’s ability to promote an inclusive, supportive and innovative educational environment for students of diverse ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Here are just a few that have significantly impacted the SEU community.

THE BANK OF AMERICA PROGRESANDO SCHOLARS PROGRAM Spearheaded by Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Life Anne Bartlett, Ph.D., this two-year grant was funded by Bank of America to assist HispanicLatino graduate students pursuing careers in healthcare. For SEU, the grant directly supports the addition of a bilingual healthcare academic/career advisor to Progresando Scholars, in addition to supplemental instruction and tutoring in critical prerequisite classes. This grant also provides emergency funds to Progresando Scholars facing food and housing insecurities, caregiving responsibilities, or other unanticipated financial needs.

SOME COLLEGE NO DEGREE Through the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE), this initiative aims to help adult learners who were unable to complete college by providing tailored support for those returning to earn their degree. Directed

by Anne Bartlett, Ph.D., provost and vice president for the division of Academic Affairs and Student Life, the initiative received more than $16,000 this past year.

MENTAL HEALTH IN HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY PROVIDER PARTNERSHIPS GRANT Through this partnership, Saint Elizabeth University received more than $90,000 to partner with Help Us Be Better (HUBB), a nonprofit arts and trauma center located in Newark, New Jersey. Directed by Dean David M. Hill Jr., Ed.D., this collaborative program will afford students with on-campus alternative mental health services through the establishment of the HUBB Arts & Trauma Center at SEU. This initiative will provide on-campus mental health support services to address the exacerbated and prolonged tolls of

COVID-19 on our traditionally underrepresented students, those who were disproportionately impacted by the effects of COVID-19. With this grant, our initiative will address the students’ mental health needs by promoting inclusive, open, and safe learning environments focused on mental health wellness. Students will have greater availability and access to such on-campus supports rather than utilizing personal transportation and finances to receive the same.

TITLE V, DEVELOPING HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS GRANT Initially received in 2020 under the direction of Anthony B. Santimaria, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic–Serving Institutions (DHSI) Program awarded SEU a $2.3 million grant to expand opportunities for Hispanic students. So far, the initiative enabled the institution to organize a residential Summer Jumpstart program, while also contributing to student technology needs and a high retention rate. The grant has also helped SEU create many of the newly renovated learning spaces on campus.

OPPORTUNITY MEETS INNOVATION CHALLENGE (OMIC) GRANT SEU received $500,000 from the State of New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE) to develop and implement a comprehensive program aimed to increase the rate of completion for students on academic probation, forced to drop out our withdraw from college due to the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19. As the grant approaches its end this fall, it has made a profound impact on creating academic pathways and degree recovery, supporting technological equity and fostering socialemotional well-being.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Our New Pre-Collegiate Summer Intensive Program Provides College Experience to High School Students SAINT ELIZABETH UNIVERSITY IS HELPING INCOMING AND FUTURE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THE IMPORTANT MILESTONE OF TRANSITIONING INTO COLLEGE LIFE THROUGH ITS NEW RESIDENTIAL PRE-COLLEGIATE SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM. With a focus on strengthening academic and practical skills, the program provides a head start on college education to high school students from diverse communities in New Jersey. Students also are able to earn 10 college credits through coursework from courses in writing, presentation skills, math and critical thinking.

“Going away to college the first time can be a daunting task. However, it does not have to be that way,” said David M. Hill Jr., Ed.D., dean of Student Affairs at SEU. “The Pre-Collegiate Summer Intensive Program aims to help incoming students with the transition to college, including intensive peer tutoring and mentoring support, plus career counseling and professional workshops.”

This summer SEU hosted 55 rising junior and senior high school students from the College Achieve Public School Charter School Consortium (CAPS) in Paterson and Plainfield, New Jersey,as part of the program’s launch.

“The program helped me feel more prepared for college…I gained so much insight from the college experience,” shares Lindsey Maria from Paterson, who completed the 2023 SEU Pre-Collegiate Summer Intensive Program. “My professors helped me feel more confident in my writing, and I learned more than I could imagine.”

The Pre-Collegiate Summer Intensive Program will continue to be instrumental for high school students and their success as they embark on their journey into college.

Guaranteed Education Pilot Program This past May marked the end of the first academic year for students who were selected to participate in the Guaranteed Education Pilot Program. Led by Mayor Ras J. Baraka and in partnership with Saint Elizabeth University, the $1 million grant from the City of Newark has supported a select group of Newark students by providing a debt-free, four-year college education at SEU.

The first year of the Guaranteed Education Pilot Program boasts a fall 2022 to fall 2023 retention rate of 90%.

The students who have participated in the program are also members of Saint Elizabeth University’s Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), designed to provide talented New Jersey students who are both academically and economically disadvantaged the opportunity to attend college. Throughout the course of their first year at SEU, the students took part in strategic and motivational workshops, mentorship programs and engaging social activities.

At the conclusion of their freshman year, the enrolled members of the Guaranteed Education Pilot Program ended with an overall passing cumulative GPA. Four of the students recently received SEU’s Academic Achievement Award, granted to students who received a 3.2 GPA or higher. These four students also celebrated their induction into SEU’s EOF Sigma Theta Rho Honors Society this spring.

Not only has the program fostered academic confidence among its members, but the initiative’s strong sense of community has resulted in a 90% fall-to-fall student retention rate. Advancing onward toward the fall semester, they are doing so as committed and involved scholars on campus.

Seeing the Ocean from a New Perspective: SEU Alumna’s Success in Marine Biology Vast, uncharted and undoubtedly fascinating, there are countless discoveries still waiting to be made as we continue to study the Earth’s oceans. While home to some of the largest and most complex species on the planet, there is also an incredible amount we can gain from studying its more simple marine life.

Sea sponges, for instance, are far from seemingly ordinary. One SEU alumna is dedicating her career to addressing the remarkable secrets they hold.

Shirley Pomponi, Ph.D., graduated from the University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. When she first started college, she wanted to pursue a career as a nurse – that is, until she went on an SEUsponsored educational voyage to the Virgin Islands led by Sr. Anna Catherine Lawlor and Sr. Theresa Angela Madden. The trip changed the trajectory of Pomponi’s entire career.

“I never imagined back when I started at Saint E’s that I would be doing what I’m doing today,” shares Pomponi.

Receiving both her master’s and doctorate degrees in biological oceanography from the University of Miami, Pomponi’s research specializes in marine biotechnology and sponge systematics, and cell and molecular biology. She set out for her first expedition with the Florida Atlantic University-Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in 1984 and has been working with the institute ever since.

“We worked together as a team to discover chemicals produced by marine organisms that can be developed into pharmaceutical drugs,” she shares. “My particular interest is in the sustainable use of these organisms.

In many cases, they produce chemicals in such

minute quantities. My focus has been on sponge cell culture, which means growing these cells in a more ecologically sustainable way.”

According to Pomponi, the chemicals obtained from sea sponges have been used to treat an array of diseases, from cancer to viral infections.

“In fact, the very first marine-derived drugs that were made clinically available were from sponges in the 1950s,” adds Pomponi.

Since then, various sea creatures beyond sponges have been studied for pharmaceutical use. Pomponi shares that the cone snail produces a potent venom that, when isolated, is 100 times stronger than morphine.

While some of Pomponi’s sea sponge research focuses on human health applications, she also shared that they can be utilized to expand our knowledge on the impacts of climate change.

“The sponge cell cultures that we are developing are being used as models to test the influence of increased water temperature and decreased pH, to see what impact that might have on sponges in the future,” says Pomponi.

I never imagined back when I started at Saint E’s that I would be doing what I’m doing today.

As far as habitat restoration, Pomponi shares that sponge cell cultures can be used to grow and develop functional sponges. With the development of “sponge nurseries,” these functional organisms are produced in order to replenish areas that have been impacted by hurricanes and extreme weather events.

Throughout her career, Pomponi acknowledges the family members who have supported her along the way. With education playing a major role in her journey, she urges students who may be interested in pursuing a career in marine biology to focus on a solid basic education and to remain open to all possibilities.

“My advice would be, don’t be so strict in what it is you think you want to do. Allow yourself to reevaluate that every few years,” she says.

This past spring, Pomponi was awarded the Alumna Award at Saint Elizabeth University’s 22nd Annual Scholarship Celebration. She was also awarded the Mother Xavier Award a few years ago and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for In Vitro Biology in 2022. In 2003, Pomponi was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Carrying on a Legacy by Giving Back In 1939, Lenore Loe Chen became one of the first international students to graduate from the then College of Saint Elizabeth. Exactly 70 years later, Lenore’s great-niece, Melody Rao, `09, followed in her footsteps.

“My great-aunt kept in touch with my grandparents in China. They always spoke about how important it was for younger generations like me to pursue better education,” says Melody. “When I had the opportunity to study at Saint Elizabeth, I didn’t want to waste any of the resources I was given at school and Saint E’s offered me everything I wanted to explore.”

During her time at SEU, Melody worked diligently in her studies and participated in various clubs and organizations, fully embracing all the school had to offer. She worked multiple on-campus jobs, tutored fellow students, and worked closely with her professors in and out of the classroom.

“I gained so much from my time at Saint Elizabeth,” shares Melody. “The experiences you go through in life make up who you are. When we get to know ourselves, we become more confident and continue to grow. That is what the school did for me.”

“I’ve always wanted to do for others what she did for me; to give back and help a student receive their education in honor of my great-aunt means a lot,” says Melody.

In doing so, Melody worked with SEU’s Institutional Advancement Division to create a scholarship in her great-aunt’s name. The Lenore Loe Chen ‘39 Memorial Scholarship Fund will be offered to a student of Chinese heritage at Saint Elizabeth University. The recipient of the award must be in good academic standing and have a 3.5 or higher GPA. Melody hopes that the scholarship can make it easier for an international student to attend SEU.

Today, Melody resides in California with her family, where she enjoys hiking, outdoor activities and cherishing memories with friends and family. She currently works as a senior manager for global sourcing and supply at Apple.

Carrying on her family’s legacy, Melody’s contribution will make a direct impact on an SEU student and their future. Her passion in this pursuit encompasses all that the University stands for, as she is added to the list of generous Saint E’s alumni who continue to live the mission of our foundresses.

While Melody’s incredible work ethic has played a role in her career, she credits her success to her greataunt, who gave her the life-changing opportunity of studying abroad in the United States.

Payal Salsburg, ’00 “Starting at age 17 and continuing throughout my life and career, multiple caring people have stepped up and given me a chance. That’s my goal, to give it back and pay it forward and to give someone else their chance,” shares Payal Salsburg, Class of 2000.

In 1996, Salsburg left her family in India to attend college in the United States. Venturing into the unknown, the opportunity to pursue her education at Saint Elizabeth not only introduced her to new friendships and experiences, but also propelled her to develop a lifelong commitment to serving others.

To be in an environment that supported and nourished my need to serve others made me realize that those were my values, too.

After earning her degree in computer science and mathematics, she later went on to complete her master’s degree in computer science from the University of Colorado Boulder. About four years into the pursuit of her Ph.D. in computer science, she strongly felt that she needed to make a change in her career. Trusting her intuition, she once again took a chance that significantly altered her future.

“I had always thought about law school, even during my time at Saint Elizabeth,” Salsburg says. “The problem was, as an undergrad international student, I couldn’t get loans to afford law school right away.”

Once she felt financially prepared, Salsburg decided to go for her dream. Dropping everything and heading to Florida, she began to pursue her juris doctor at Nova Southeastern University. Her hard work paid off, and at the age of 30, Salsburg graduated with her law degree. In 2012, she relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where she currently resides and practices.

As a lawyer, Salsburg has witnessed the profound impact her work has had on the lives of her clients.

From helping low-income individuals who have turned their lives around by sealing their criminal

records to providing legal representation for those unable to afford counsel, Salsburg has spent a great deal of her career advocating for those who need it most.

“People go through experiences that make them change, something in the world makes us straighten out,” says Salsburg. “Should the mistakes we make, or the support that we didn’t have that led us to make those mistakes, hold us back forever?”

According to Salsburg, many of the clients she worked for at the time were unable to obtain employment or subsidized housing due to their criminal records from decades prior. As changed, productive members of society, many of these individuals faced significant setbacks, which made it nearly impossible to succeed.

In her personal time and professional career, Salsburg passionately lives each day through serving others.

Spending weekends volunteering with local homeless shelters, food pantries and hospitals, she firmly believes in the power of giving back to her community.

Recently, she became deeply involved with Boston CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), ensuring a safe and permanent home for court-involved children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

“I think being a student of Saint Elizabeth was a critical part of my development,” Salsburg shares. “To be in an environment that supported and nourished my need to serve others and to help me find ways to do that was really instrumental and made me realize that those were my values, too.”

Salsburg received the Mother Xavier Award during this year’s 22nd Annual Scholarship Celebration, presented to an SEU alum whose work embodies the legacy of service that our founders have forever inspired. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of seizing a single chance, as she pursued her passion while lifting others along her journey.

2001 MERCEDES CHANG (ARIAS) Mercedes has been a proud public school employee since graduating from SEU. Most recently, she served as principal of the best elementary school, Parkway Elementary in Mount Laurel, before returning “home” where she started her career as an ELA teacher. She is now director of accountability and special services and is proud to say a lot of her success is due to her education at SEU. 2002 DANIYA TAMENDAROVA Daniya works at the American Psychological Association, where she leads the author marketing and business development team of APA’s Publishing branch, an international scholarly publisher of journals, books, and electronic resources in psychology and related disciplines. She lives in the Washington, DC, area with her partner, Paul, and son, Aidan, where they enjoy art museums, embassy events, and parks.

CAROL MARIA CERBO BEZAK Carol earned her M.A. in Theology from Saint Elizabeth University in 2016. She is the director of The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, New York, in addition to serving as President of NASPA, National Association of Shrine & Pilgrimage Apostolate.

2017 FLORANGEL CABRERA Florangel Cabrera gave birth to a baby girl this past March. Her name is Zienna Charlize Williams.

2018 BRIA FORNEY Bria Forney completed her Master of Science in Human Resource Management at SEU. She was recently promoted as a talent acquisition manager and says she is grateful for the knowledge and advice from the professors of the Business Administration department.

MARIA CATHERINA CAPOZZOLI Maria Catherina Capozzoli married her husband, Vittorio Racioppi, in July 2022.

NICOLE TENEGRA (TIPTON) Nicole welcomed the birth of her third child, Dominic. She continues to be busy with two toddlers and working as an academic family physician in Illinois.

DIAMOND NEFEHTEREE YANCEY Diamond Nefehteree Yancey obtained her Master of Science in Education from Hunter College, and graduated magna cum laude with a 3.8 GPA.

ALISON WILLIAMS Alison Williams reached her five-year milestone working for the State of New Jersey. Alison is also a certified JourneyDance instructor. Alison is a collaborator with other JourneyDance teachers and facilitators in New Jersey and in the Philadelphia/Langhorne areas of Pennsylvania.

2012 DEACON MICHAEL A. MEYER Deacon Michael A. Meyer was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology in 2022.

2013 CHRISTINE VOLLKOMMER Christine Vollkommer is a certified veterinary technician at the Oradell Animal Hospital.

SARAH ELIZABETH BECHTEL Sarah earned her Master of Arts (M.A.) in English in 2016 from Old Dominion University, and she earned an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech in 2022.

SR. ANNA JOY (SHANNON TIPTON) Sr. Anna Joy, OP, takes final vows this summer as a Dominican Sister of Saint Cecilia in Nashville, Tennessee. She is currently teaching 5th grade in Denver, Colorado.

OSA OSEMWEGIE started a new role as program manager, clinical pathology laboratory operations at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronze, New York.

2020 CAITLYN CONSELYEA graduated with Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Mental Health specialization from Caldwell University.

KRISTINA FAVO After earning a master’s degree in public health from Saint Elizabeth University, Kristina worked for the Morris County Division of Public Health as a health education field representative. In April 2022, she became a certified health education specialist.

MATTHEW THOMAS Matthew Thomas was appointed as coleader of highly reliable organization (HRO) implementation at Healdsburg Hospital, Providence.

DR. KURT CERESNAK Dr. Kurt Ceresnak obtained his doctoral degree from Saint Elizabeth in 2020 and now proudly serves as a graduate adjunct professor at the University in the educational leadership department.
