THE EVOLUTION OF COLLEGE STATION

College Station: The Heart of Aggieland®
College Station, situated in the Brazos Valley of Texas, has a captivating history shaped by the founding and growth of Texas A&M University. Initially established in 1871 as a depot on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, the town gained prominence when Texas A&M opened its doors in 1876 as the state’s first public institution of higher education.
Becoming an official city in 1938, College Station has embraced its identity rooted in the university’s agricultural and mechanical focus, fostering research, technological advancements, and a thriving academic community. Over the years, the city has
evolved into a dynamic center for education, innovation, and cultural enrichment.

The History and Legacy of TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
Texas A&M University, nestled in the heart of College Station, boasts a rich history that began in 1876. Founded as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the institution initially focused on the state’s agricultural and mechanical industries. Over time, Texas A&M blossomed into a comprehensive university celebrated for its dedication to education, research, and service.
The university’s culture is infused with the Aggie Spirit, which cherishes values like leadership, loyalty, and selfless service. Beyond academic pursuits, Texas A&M played a pivotal role during World War II by hosting military training programs and contributing significantly to the war effort.
Today, Texas A&M stands as a premier public institution in the United States. Its sprawling campus, steeped in traditions, and unwavering pursuit of excellence mark it as a prime destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the enduring legacy and influential impact of this Texas flagship.

Kyle Field
THE HEARTBEAT OF AGGIE FOOTBALL
The Tradition and Tenacity of Aggie Football
Texas A&M football in College Station offers a thrilling blend of tradition, camaraderie, and passionate fan engagement. Home games at the iconic Kyle Field, one of the largest stadiums in college football, provide an electric atmosphere as the 12th Man—our dedicated fan base—stands in unity throughout the game.
The Aggie Spirit, deeply rooted in tradition, is showcased through events like Midnight Yell Practice and the spirited singing of the Aggie War Hymn. As a member of the competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC), Texas A&M faces formidable opponents, ensuring intense and exciting matchups.
But the spirit of College Station extends far beyond the stadium walls. The renowned tailgates are an essential part of the game day experience, a rite of passage for both locals and visitors alike. Acres of revelers set up camp, with the savory scents of barbecued meats and homemade Texan recipes wafting through the air, as the sounds of laughter and music create a welcoming atmosphere. Here, friendships are formed over shared platters and stories exchanged over cold beverages, embodying the very essence of Texas hospitality. Whether you’re a die-hard football enthusiast or simply seeking the vibrant energy of college sports, a Texas A&M football game is a must-see event in this spirited community.

The Legend of the 12th Man
On January 2, 1922, E. King Gill, a basketball player and former member of the Texas A&M football team, was in the stands during the Dixie Classic as the Aggies faced top-ranked, undefeated Centre College. Outgunned and with nearly all players injured, Coach Dana X. Bible called Gill down to the sideline. Gill suited up and stood ready to play throughout the game, forever becoming “the 12th Man” in what was one of the greatest upsets in college football history, with the Aggies winning 22–14. This willingness to serve is tradition and a core value at Texas A&M that runs through the entire Aggie fanbase.
