WHAT RESIDENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE

MAJOR SH 6 IMPROVEMENTS Construction is officially underway on one of the most significant transportation projects our region has seen in years. On Dec. 1, the Texas Department of Transportation kicked off the “Big 6” project — a longterm effort to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance mobility

along State Highway 6 through the College Station-Bryan area.

TxDOT awarded a $671 million contract to Fluor Heavy Civil to complete the work, reflecting a substantial investment in the future of travel throughout the Brazos Valley.

WHAT’S CHANGING?

Over the next several years, travelers will notice construction activity as TxDOT works to modernize the corridor. Key improvements include: • • •

Widening the main lanes from four to six — three lanes in each direction.

Reconfigured auxiliary lanes to support safer merging and exit movements.

New collector-distributor lanes at select interchanges to improve traffic flow and reduce weaving.

Upgraded interchanges to help relieve bottlenecks.

Shared-use paths for people walking or biking, creating a more accessible and connected corridor for all users.

The project is expected to take at least five years to complete.

The existing playground and adjacent swing set were installed in 2001.

NEW YEAR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Starting the year with a solid emergency plan is one of the best ways to keep you and your family safe. As you review or create your plan, take a moment to think about the hazards that can affect our community.

In College Station, these hazards include drought, fire, flooding, severe winter weather, excessive heat, tornado, hail, thunderstorms and wind, dam failure, and infectious diseases. Building your plan around these risks, such as identifying

family meeting places, updating emergency contacts, and knowing how you will receive alerts, helps make sure everyone knows what to do when something happens.

An updated emergency kit is just as important as the plan itself. Be sure your kit includes essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, important documents, and supplies for pets. A full checklist is available at:

AVOID CODE VIOLATIONS Many people don't think about city codes until they receive an unwelcome citation.

Familiarize yourself with our city codes by visiting cstx.gov/CodeEnforcement.

DON'T STEAL SIGNS Traffic and street signs protect public safety. Sign theft is a criminal offense that can lead to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS Introduce yourself and exchange contact information in case of emergencies or other problems. After all, if an issue arises, would you rather they call you or the police?

KEEP THE NOISE DOWN That includes barking dogs. It's unlawful for anyone to willfully make or allow continued loud noise, especially from 10 p.m.-6 a.m.

If you can hear the noise at the end of your property line, then it's too loud, and everyone on your lease risks a citation.

SEE, CLICK, FIX! Notice something off in your neighborhood?

A street sign is missing, bulky trash that didn't get picked up, or other issues that need to be addressed? Let the City know through See, Click, Fix. You submit the issue through the platform and it gets routed directly to the department in charge of solving the issue.

SECURE YOUR PROPERTY

Take or hide your valuables before exiting your vehicle and lock your doors. Keep your residence locked and your garage door down as well. And don't leave boxes from your new, expensive purchases out for collection–that's an advertisement for thieves. Instead, break the boxes down for your recycling or trash container, or put them out just before your scheduled bulky collection. If you see any suspicious activity, report it to College Station Police Department at 979.764.3600.

TEND TO YOUR PETS

If you're not on your property, your dog must be on a leash–and be sure to clean up after them. Dogs, cats, and ferrets must be licensed, tagged, and vaccinated in Brazos County. Even if your pet is licensed in another county, you still need to get a tag here. You can purchase tags through your vet or the Aggieland Humane Society (AggielandHumane.org). WHAT DO THEY DO? CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE

Tucked just behind the more visible parts of City Hall is one of the most essential, quietly powerful departments in local government: the City Secretary’s Office. While residents may interact more often with public safety, public works, or parks, this office is the steady heartbeat of the democratic process, making sure each decision, action, and record is accurate, accessible, and preserved.

The City Secretary is the official record-keeper for the City of College Station, a role defined by state law and the City Charter. That responsibility touches almost every aspect of city government. Each 32

ordinance adopted by the City Council, every resolution, agenda packet, contract, and official action flows through this office. When the Council meets, the team prepares and posts the agenda, attends the meeting, documents the votes, and preserves the decisions for posterity.

Without this steady work, the public wouldn’t have a clear record of how policy is made or how local laws come to life.

But preserving records is only one part of the office’s commitment to transparency. The City Secretary’s team also manages public records requests, helping residents, reporters, and businesses find the documents

What makes the City Secretary’s Office particularly unique is its connection to every layer of city life: past, present, and future. It protects the historical record of decisions that shaped College Station decades ago. It supports the actions being taken today in council chambers and board meetings across the city.

And it ensures those decisions will be preserved for generations to come.

Though the work is meticulous and often unseen, its impact is felt everywhere. Every public record, council vote, ordinance, election, and vital document touches this office.

The City Secretary’s team safeguards transparency, strengthens trust, and keeps the city’s legislative process running smoothly.

CSPD Welcomes New Recruits The College Station Police Department recently welcomed 13 new police officers following their graduation from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Central Texas Police Academy. After completing months of intensive training and successfully passing their TEEX and TCOLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement) exams, the recruits earned their peace officer licenses and officially began their careers in law enforcement.

The officers were formally sworn in

by Chief Billy Couch during a badge pinning ceremony on Dec. 12, when family and friends gathered to mark this important milestone. With academy training complete, the new officers have begun their transition into field training, where they will continue developing the skills and professionalism needed to serve the College Station community.

We congratulate our newest officers and welcome them to the CSPD family.

K-9 Rico Retires from CSPD After more than eight years of dedicated service, K-9 Rico has officially retired from the College Station Police Department.

A 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, Rico was selected for service based on his strength, focus, and drive. He completed four months of initial patrol and detection training in Utah and maintained a demanding training schedule throughout his career, averaging 40 hours of training each month to remain mission-ready.

During his time with CSPD, K-9 Rico worked only serious cases, including narcotics investigations, aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, and homicide-related incidents.

He was a critical tool in both enforcement and prevention, often helping reduce use of force, as many suspects chose to surrender when confronted by a police K-9.

Over the course of his career, Rico logged more than 2,600 hours of training and completed 432 deployments, including 256 detection deployments and 176

patrol deployments. His work directly contributed to numerous criminal apprehensions, resulting in 218 arrests and the seizure of more than $186,000 in currency, over 30 firearms, and more than 11 kilograms of illegal narcotics. K-9 Rico’s impact on public safety has been extraordinary— representing significant threats removed from the community, crimes prevented, and lives made safer because of his unwavering commitment.

On Dec. 18, K-9 Rico worked his final shift and officially went “10-42.” He will now enjoy retirement at home with his best buddy and longtime handler, trading deployments for a quieter life and the simple joy of just being a dog.

We wish Rico a long, healthy, and peaceful retirement and thank him for a job exceptionally well done.

CSFD FIREFIGHTERS TRAIN FOR HIGH-RISE FIRES The Brayton Fire Training Facility recently unveiled a new training prop specifically designed for high-rise fires. Through our strong partnership with TEEX, the College Station Fire Department was the first department to use the training prop to focus on high-rise firefighting.

Often referred to as “fire in the sky,” high-rise buildings present unique firefighting challenges not found in other types of buildings. The building codes for high-rises are critically important, since much of the success 42

in incidents revolves around working with and supporting the building systems designed to suppress and contain fire spread.

The department intends to focus on high-rise training over the upcoming year to increase our operational readiness for the growing challenges we may face in the evolving Northgate high-rise district. Northgate currently has six high-rise buildings with five more under construction and two in the planning phases. The 6,972 beds in the Northgate district are expected to expand to more than 14,000 by the fall of 2027.

AGRILIFE AWARD HONORS LAURIE BROWN Recreation Supervisor Laurie Brown was recently recognized at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's Volunteer Recognition Luncheon with the Friend of Extension Award for her leadership in local conservation initiatives, including the Bird City certification with Texas Parks and Wildlife and Audubon Texas, and ongoing support of College Station’s conservation programs such as the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, Tree City USA initiatives, and urban heat island planting projects.

CITY EMPLOYEES RALLY FOR ANGEL TREE PROGRAM City of College Station employees showed remarkable generosity through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts to children facing financial hardship.

What began as a goal to adopt 50 angels quickly grew, and thanks to the kindness of city staff, 55 children were ultimately sponsored.
