You can find this iconic building (which once housed College Station’s very first fire station) conveniently located on Texas Avenue, just across from Texas A&M University. Once inside, you’ll discover a helpful staff ready to assist you with directions, local advice on their favorite spots, recommendations on where to stay and anything else you may need. You’ll also find a wide selection of College Station merchandise so you can show your excitement during your trip, and bring home a few souvenirs as well.

Ever wonder where College Station got its name? It’s probably...exactly what you guessed. When Texas A&M was inaugurated as the state’s first higher-learning institution, it meant more people than ever would be flocking to this area. In turn, that meant creating a stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad line to help those people get here. In 1938, the locals in the area turned the “college station” on the railroad line into a proper city, and the name stuck.

THE GIG ‘EM GLOSSARY As you trek around town, here’s some local lingo to know that’ll help you get in the Aggie spirit: “Gig ‘Em”

At a Yell Practice before a game against TCU in 1920, the question, “What are we going to do to those Horned Frogs?” was answered with a raucous, “Gig ‘Em!” and a tradition was born. Today, Aggies exchange this energetic greeting whenever they cross paths, often accompanied a hearty thumbs-up.

“Whoop!”

An expression of approval or excitement that Aggie upperclassmen and former students frequently use. However, tradition states that underclassmen shouldn’t use the term until they reach their junior year.

Aggie teams compete throughout the calendar year, so plan your trip around your favorite spectator sport, or simply come visit and grab a ticket for whichever team is playing that week. You can’t go wrong.

Swing a Club or Spin A Disc

Both traditional golf and the frisbee variety are a great way to enjoy the wonderful weather College Station has much of the year. The Golf Club at Texas A&M offers an excellent chance to test your skills along manicured fairways that make use of the native landscape. Meanwhile, Research Park, Wolf Pen Creek, Oaks Park and several other locations offer disc golf as well.

Fun For All

Located at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park, the Fun For All Playground is a recreational area that puts active, inventive play areas within reach of kids and adults of differing abilities. An accessible splash pad, plentiful wheelchair ramps, adaptive equipment and more truly do make this fun for all.

Pick A Park

Winding trails traverse a wide variety of parks in the College Station area, including Lick Creek Park, Stephen C. Beachy Central Park, Wolf Pen Creek and Aggie Park, which lies in the heart of campus.

Pickleball courts are available at many parks as well, so pack your paddle and join a pickup game, or look for tournaments being held throughout the year.

Roadrunners On Ice

The Texas Roadrunners are College Station’s local professional hockey team, taking on all comers from the North American 3 Hockey League at Spirit Ice Arena. Tickets are affordable and the action is fast, making this a great way to spend an afternoon or evening of your stay.

CULTURE ABOUND Situated between three major metropolitan areas and benefitting from a distinguished university being at the heart of the town, College Station is blessed to have a diverse, thriving art scene.

The Arts Center of Brazos Valley offers a comprehensive look at classical and contemporary art by both local and international artists. Up-and-coming young artists from around the area are also featured, with summer art camps helping to train the next generation of talent, too.

On the Texas A&M campus, the J. Wayne Stark Galleries showcases paintings, prints, drawings and photographs with an emphasis on American artists generally, and Texas art more specifically. The permanent collection features sculpture and decorative arts as well. OPAS at Texas A&M University (originally the Opera and Performing Arts

Society) hosts a series of spectacular performances each year. Check the schedule and see shows like the Blue Man Group and the New York Tenors to Broadway musicals and stage productions like Churchill, The Music Man and The Simon & Garfunkel Story.

The Brazos Valley Chorale and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra also hold regular performances that are open to the public and serve as a worthwhile musical interlude during any vacation.

Finally, the Aggieland Art Trail offers aficionados of creative, colorful outdoor murals a wonderful way to explore the city while taking in impressive works. On the sides of churches and stores, along fences and walls and everywhere else these stunning images have been commissioned, artistry is on display for all to see.

It all starts in a storied row of buildings almost as old as the city itself—The Historic Northgate District, which houses some of the most famous (infamous?) establishments in the area. From O’Bannon’s Tap House to Duddley’s Draw, Chimy’s to The Backyard, a stroll down Bottlecap Alley will bring you to them all-including the legendary Dixie Chicken.

When live music calls, follow your ears to The Tap, which brings in performers ranging from country to rock to singer-songwriters churning out pure Americana hits. The Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater is an amazing outdoor venue for taking in a concert under the stars.

And for large-scale music festivals, both Aggie Park and Kyle Field itself have been known to attract music lovers by the tens of thousands.

All around town, there are watering holes offering their own distinct flavor, both in atmosphere as well as cocktails. The 1791 Whiskey Bar at The George, The Rail at Brazos– PTK at Texas A&M Hotel, Marfa Texas Kitchen, Red’s Ice House, Downtown Uncorked, Perrine Winery and Primrose Path Wine Bar all stand ready to pour you a glass or pop the top off a cold one so you can relax and rejoice with friends old and new.

For a different kind of night out, Poet’s Billiards lets you rack ‘em up and cheer ‘em on, with sports on its many TVs. At The Cut Axe Throwing, you can hurl sharp objects of all kinds under the tutelage of owner Tony “Loose” Luce, who placed 2nd in the World Knife Throwing Championships.

Stroll Bryan’s charming downtown while listening to live music and shopping for artisan goods. And don’t forget to stop by the Messina Hof Estate Winery to sample amazing wines and bring home a bottle or two.

Navasota, Texas South of College Station (toward Houston) lies Navasota, designated the “Blues Capital of Texas” and offering a historic look that still harkens back to the Wild West. Its charming downtown is bursting with hidden gems. Step into Horlock House, a Victorian manse that now houses contemporary works of art. Stop by WildFlyer Mead & Beer Company to sample craft beer and mead made on the oldest continually operating bee farm in Texas. And look for the many tributes to local blues legend Mance Lipscomb, including a bronze statue of him on a park bench and a large mural downtown.

Brenham, Texas Southwest of College Station lies Brenham, a picturesque little town with plenty to offer—including a sweet treat you may have heard of. Blue Bell Ice Cream was founded in Brenham in 1907, named after the state’s bluebell wildflowers, and still has a creamery and ice cream parlor open for your enjoyment in the town. At Toubin Park, you can learn the railroad boom town story of Brenham’s public cisterns and see how they’ve been maintained today. And throughout downtown, intriguing shops and inviting restaurants beckon curious travelers to step inside and experience a bit of this historic town’s modern culture.
