Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a contentious bill aimed at curbing minors’ access to social media platforms The bill, designated as HB 3, received support from the House with a vote of 109-4, following its earlier passage in the Senate earlier in March

This marks a significant shift after Governor DeSantis had vetoed a previous version of the bill

House Speaker Paul Renner, a staunch advocate for tighter regulations on social media, has spearheaded the legislative effort Renner argues that unrestricted social media use poses a threat to children’s mental well-being and exposes them to potential dangers like communication with sexual predators

IFrom 'Tennis Dread' to Coach The Journey of Compton Russell

n the world of tennis, “love” literally means nothing, but for former professional Jamaican tennis player turned South Florida coach Compton Russell it's the sport that he adores

Russell's foray into tennis began as a little boy growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, seeing his older cousin Richard Russell dominating the game “I went to watch one of his important matches and decided I wanted to play also,” says Compton Richard began teaching Compton the sport during his spare time and subsequently, the younger Russell fell in love “I played my first tournament in 1964,” he says “And it led to me eventually becoming the Jamaican champion and then Caribbean champion ”

With racial tensions at a high in the '70s, Russell moved stateside to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1971 Experiencing segregation and seeing the mistreatment of black people simply based on the color of their skin then spurred a transformation in him “I became radicalized for social change and became more racially conscious,” Russell says of the time “When I came back from college a year later in 1972, Jamaica started to go through its social change with Michael Manley and Bob Marley What we were having was a political and social evolution of consciousness ”

While continuing to play tennis Russell began learning and following the philosophy of Rastafarianism, which included growing locs His choice to do so however would become a point of contention for members of society, so much so that while he was the local champion and more than eligible for the Jamaican National Tennis team, for two years, he wasn't allowed to play on the team

It was during this time that Russell crossed paths with Bob Marley, the iconic reggae musician and fellow Rastafarian The two

values of resilience and determination, and along with friend Allan “Skill” Cole dubbed him 'Tennis Dread' “In the seventies, we became a Rasta community. We were the dutty Rasta's, so it is

quite an evolution that now I'm sitting in my living room and seeing so many ads that have a song by Bob Marley. When we weren't given a chance back then Now there is an acceptance but we can't forget the 'down-pression' and push back on us simply because of our hair,” he says

With the help of Island Records Chris Blackwell, Russell was later given the opportunity to continue playing tennis all over the world, (United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Venezuela, China, Japan, and more) representing Jamaica with his remarkable skills and locs

In the mid-80s, Russell retired from professional competition and seamlessly transitioned into coaching which led him to leave Jamaica's shores in the 90s, for South Florida with his family that includes his wife Tracy, daughter Simone, and son David who is now also a tennis professional

As Russell reminisces about the game he points out that it has grown significantly since his days of idolizing Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith “Today's game has evolved in technique and strategy and continues to become more exciting with the evolution of equipment The game is at the highest peak it has ever been at,” he says

With the Miami Open 2024 set to culminate this weekend, he is asked if he has any predictions on who will win, but like any good tennis player, he understands that the game can be unpredictable Yet he indulges letting us know he has high hopes for Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the men's division and Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff in the women's

Of tennis and what it has done for him, he concludes, “I'm very happy that this sport could do all that it has for me. I'm lucky I have been able to play tennis all my life It has been a blessing and I give thanks for that ”

Nandlall underscored the imperative for parliamentary bodies worldwide to address Venezuela’s actions, stressing the importance of upholding international law and fostering diplomatic avenues for resolving conflicts

He emphasized that such condemnation is not merely a gesture of support to Guyana but a fundamental obligation in line with the principles of the IPU

The survey, conducted across England, Scotland, and Wales in February 2024, sheds light on the growing awareness and support for reparatory justice initiatives

According to The Repair Campaign’s research, three in five individuals in the UK advocate for a formal apology, with more than half asserting that it should originate from either the UK Government or organizations historically linked to profiting from Caribbean slavery

Moreover, the survey indicates that a significant portion four in ten respondents believe that financial compensation should be provided to Caribbean nations as a means of redressing the enduring impacts of slavery and colonialism

True meaning of Easter lost on some youth

Next Sunday, March 31, is Easter Sunday a traditional religious day of celebration for Christians. In Florida, as elsewhere in the US, and throughout the Caribbean, Easter Sunday church services are normally one of the most well-attended, as entire families turn out to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Yet, although adults may adhere to the religious tradition of Easter, it seems like it's not the same for the youth Many churches, especially the traditional Catholic and Episcopalian churches, are concerned the youth membership of their congregations has been dwindling in recent years

Typing the word 'Easter' in Google, images results in a plethora of pictures of seemingly happy bunny rabbits and colorful eggs Is Easter, to this generation, more about Jesus or fluffy stuffed animals and egg hunts?

A recent survey conducted by a large church in Texas found although 82 percent of young people between the ages of 15 and 25 years of age are aware of the religious meaning of Easter, only 37 percent attend church on Easter Sunday Significantly, 33 percent did not believe Jesus rose from the dead, and 23 percent, doubted Jesus could have risen

In Florida, asking a similar question to some young people under 18, revealed a disconnect as to exactly what Easter means A small minority knew that Easter stands for Christ's resurrection, but more alarming, some didn't even understand what the resurrection of Christ means It was ironic that several South Florida teens expressed their intent of attending Easter services this year, despite not really understanding what Easter is all about One teenage girl said, “On Easter Sunday the entire family traditionally attends church service in the morning I go along because

my parents insist I do, but I don't really understand the fuss ”

The disconnect between a growing number of the youth with adhering to the religious tradition of Easter, and other religious commemorative days, has become a great concern for many parents, who worry that the true meaning of these Christian commemorations is quickly being obscured by more worldly endeavors

In the US church survey referred to earlier, 57 percent of the youth surveyed said they party a lot on the Saturday before Easter and looked forward to Ester Sunday to spend “happy time” with family members

There is a trend of thought that suggests the use of the Internet is sowing doubts in the minds of some young people regarding Easter and other religious festivals Several sites on the Internet rubbish Easter's religious meaning, while focusing on other aspects of Easter Many parents in South Florida have expressed regret that, unlike Caribbean schools, schools in the US do not teach, or have any focus on, Christianity Indeed, because schools in the US do not focus on Christian teaching, it is the responsibility of parents to instruct their children on the teachings and meanings of Christianity, and respective Christian celebrations

Listening to some youth discuss the importance of religion in their lives, it's borne out that many regard church as “boring”, and even as one young man said, “irrelevant to the modern world ” This opinion seems more related to the traditional church which features a more conservative order of service There's some evidence more young people attend nontraditional churches where services are characterized by lively music played by church bands, have large choirs singing praise lustily, and where pastors are usually more charismatic in their preaching than in the traditional churches

In the meantime, many parents would like their teenage children to be more entuned to the

religious meaning of Easter Some believe traditional Easier icons like the bunny rabbit do help

A c c o r d i n g t o K i m W i e r o f focusonthefamily com, “Bunnies, eggs, floral baskets, and more can become tools that parents use to bring a greater understanding of the message of Easter [to their young children] ” She states that since Easter is an opportune time for parents to talk to their children about God's love and mercy, the Easter bunny can be used as a representation of God's true character

For example, Easter bunnies “ are white as snow because Jesus takes all sin away (Isaiah 1:18b),” “have big ears that are quick to listen” (James 1:19), “are quiet in prayer, but hop with thanksgiving and rejoicing, (Philippians 4:4-6), ” and “have big feet to go tell others about Jesus, (Matthew 28: 19-20) ”

A Florida pastor concurs, saying: “It's becoming more challenging to motivate young people to attend church or to teach them about Christian milestones like Easter Therefore, using fun and innovative means is a great way to teach the youth about Easter's true meaning and attract them to attend church They must hold true to these principles which have remained a vital part of life for many generations ”

Malaysia rejects offer to host 2026 Commonwealth Games

In a significant setback for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Malaysia has declined an offer to host the event, citing time constraints, financial concerns, and inadequate funding support.

The decision comes as a blow to the quadrennial multi-sport event, which has faced challenges in securing host nations in recent years

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) approached Malaysia after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew its bid, citing escalating costs Despite offering 100 million pounds ($126 million) in supporting funds, Malaysia ruled out hosting the Games due to the short notice and the associated financial and logistical challenges

The rejection by Malaysia raises the possibility of the Games not taking place for the first time since their cancellation in 1942 and 1946 during the Second World War G o v e r n m e n t s p o k e s p e r s o n a n d Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the prohibitive nature of the costs and time required for hosting the event on such short notice

The CGF expressed disappointment at Malaysia’s decision but affirmed its commitment to finding an alternative host However, the search for a suitable host continues, with other interested Commonwealth Games Associations being considered

The Commonwealth Games, traditionally contested by approximately 70 countries and territories of the former British empire,
