Behind Lewis & Clarke is the voice of songwriter, instrumentalist, composer and producer Lou Rogai, who has toured multiple continents and released several acclaimed records for more than decade.

Tattoo enthusiasts will descend on Scranton this weekend as the Electric City Tattoo Convention returns.

Razzle dazzle

‘Chicago’ returns to Scranton with ‘All That Jazz’ and more

Walter Bobbie knows just a bit about Scranton, Broadway and all that jazz.

Well, maybe more.

Since making his way to New York City decades ago after graduating from University of Scranton, the Tony Award-winning city native built a resume full of starring roles and star-making directorial efforts, including 1996’s Broadway revival of “Chicago,” which continues to run there.

Legendary choreographer and actor Bob Fosse staged the original “Chicago” on Broadway in 1975.

It ran for two years, but the revival has completed nearly 9,000 performances, won six Tonys — including one for Bobbie’s directing — and is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. This weekend, Broadway Theatre League of Northeastern Pennsylvania brings the national tour back to Scranton for five shows from Friday, April 13, through Sunday, April 15, at Scranton Cultural Center at The Masonic Temple, 420 N. Washington Ave. Bobbie, 72, had hoped to visit to his hometown “to be able to share the moment” with the “Chicago” audience, but his return to the Broadway spotlight — portraying Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, in “Saint Joan” — prevents that. The play about St. Joan of Arc — whose cast also includes Condola Rashad and Jack Davenport — opens Wednesday, April 25, at Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, 261 W. 47th St., New York City.

The grandson of Polish coal miners, Bobbie described his beginnings in Scranton as modest. He and his family moved out of the city when he was about 11, but Bobbie returned to study at University of Scranton. During a trip to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City, he saw “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway and thought, “I’m coming back here. This is what I want to do.”

“Saint Joan” marks Bobbie’s first Broadway acting gig since he played Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the early ’90s’ “Guys and Dolls” revival. His career there began with 1971’s musical “Frank Merriwell” and picked up speed when he originated the role of Roger in “Grease” in 1972.

Bobbie acted in several other productions in the ensuing years but also developed a desire to direct.

He helmed little projects here and there, he said, and conceived and directed the Tony-nominated musical

revue “A Grand Night for Singing.”

“Nothing’s overnight,” Bobbie said. “It’s just that sometimes you have the opportunity to really leap forward in a way you couldn’t have planned or imagined or dreamed.”

He started directing for the “City Center’s Encores!” concert series and became its artistic director. After he directed “Chicago” for the series, he said, it “took off like a rocket”and moved to Broadway within a year.

At the time, the O.J. Simpson murder trial had recently transfixed the nation, which Bobbie felt made “Chicago’s” story of the interplay of crime and fame timely. And that “topic has never gone away,” he added, enabling “Chicago’s” record-breaking run.

While the 1970s version came across as more of a satire and indictment of America’s judicial system, Bobbie said, today the story seems like “more of a documentary.”

“Basically, it’s about getting away with murder,” he said. “It’s about the use and abuse of celebrity. ... As much as it is a lot of razzle-dazzle and a lot of toe-tapping, it also leaves your mind engaged.”

Bobbie and Ann Reinking — who starred as Roxie Hart in the original show and the revival, which she also choreographed — wanted to honor Fosse’s “theatrical imagination” but not replicate his ’70s version, Bobbie said. The pair started by reworking three major numbers, such as by making “Cell Block Tango” look “like one of those great Fosse chair numbers,” Bobbie explained.

“I think that one of the nicest things that’s ever been said to me (was) by the great agent of Sam Cohn. … He said, ‘If Fosse was alive today, this is how he would do it,” Bobbie said.

Eager to direct, Bobbie did not think about the show’s potential success at the time but rather his commitment to things and how they stimulate the imagination. “(Scenic designer John Lee Beatty) and I decided early on … that we wanted to put the band in a jury box on stage,” he said. “We compressed them.

Everybody should be trapped in this show. We continued to use visual metaphors that kept informing our process. And then we had all this joyous music with this singular dance vocabulary.”

Theater’s education committee and a relative of Bobbie’s by marriage — said tears filled her eyes the first time she saw “Chicago” on Broadway, in part because it put into perspective all Bobbie had achieved. Bobbie presented “Chicago” in a more abstract, minimalist way that “makes you stop and think,” Merchel said.

“To see something that from the first moment was exciting and fresh and different and compelling and contemporary,” she said. “I appreciated it immediately as a new era. He was part of a new era of getting the message through musical comedy out in such a different way.”

The public tells whether a show succeeds, Bobbie said, and they certainly did that with “Chicago.” Besides running for decades in New York, it spawned several tours and an Oscar-winning film adaptation.

Since earning his Tony, Bobbie has gone on to direct such Broadway shows as “Sweet Charity,” “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” “Footloose” and Steve Martin’s “Bright Star.”

“I feel blessedly part of the theater community, and I have since I got here,” Bobbie said. “I don’t know how that happened. I got off the bus and started working. If they wanted to get rid of me, they missed their shot 40 years ago.”

Bobbie has returned to Scranton through the years and said he feels honored to know the community has supported him during his career.

“All I can say is that if you’re in Scranton and you’re interested in the arts, stay there, make a difference in the arts, or do what I did and follow your dream. ... I’ve been all over the planet because of ‘Chicago’ alone, (not) including my other work,” he said. “It’s important when you’re in Scranton to dream big, and if not, stay in Scranton and make a difference, because it’s a remarkable community.”

Soaking up the SudS with JameS Crane I wasn’t born with a super-sophisticated palate. When I drink a beer and pick out all the flavors, I’m only really able to do so because of practice. Drink enough different brews, and you start noticing similarities and reoccurring themes.

It helps the mind put the components in neat little categorized boxes. It begins to make sense how a red ale relates to a stout. It’s the same taste, just with degrees of separation.

Because of this, I rarely run into a beer that takes me totally off-guard. Generally, I can break down even strange beers into what styles and gimmicks they represent.

The flavors remind me of other things I’ve tasted. My tongue and brain can make sense of what happens when I drink a beer.

Some breweries strive to be the exception to this rule. Perhaps the most notable is Stone Brewing. More than once, I have spent the first moments after taking a swig of Stone beer cursing and wondering what just happened. As I got used to its hop profile, that reaction doesn’t happen quite so often anymore. The aggressive beers still are somehow familiar.

That changed today.

Stone Brewing’s Scorpion Bowl IPA doesn’t really say much about its ingredients on the bottle. Most releases from breweries usually are all too happy to tout

what they have floating around inside the bottle. Not so with Scorpion Bowl.

Instead, the back of the bottle has a bit of a nonsensical story that conjures imagery of ancient sea travel and exotic locals. It also has the tagline, “A punch to the stinger.” It had a fruit punch theme going on that I’m not sure I understood.

A beautiful gold with very little head, the pour left thick, copious lacing all the way down the glass. It looked really good.

Scents included citrus and something sweet, such as a maraschino cherry. A lot of herbal qualities, as well as a caramel malt, came through. One thing I didn’t get off of it, which I would have expected given all the other components, was sweetness. I didn’t quite know what to make of that.

That first swig just amplified the confusion the scent left me with. I had no idea what I just swallowed. All my tongue had was uncertainty. A certain zip at the end really drove the scorpion imagery home.

It hit with a good bit of astringency on the back of the tongue, like someone floated an aspirin in seltzer water. That paired with some bitterness, but not an overwhelming amount.

As with many of Stone’s brews, it made more sense as I kept drinking. I noticed cherries, grapefruit and other citrus but still no sweetness. After a while, it reminded me of that fruit punch you’d drink at middle school dances, though the lime soda was dry and I didn’t have any sugar.

In truth, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s the first brew I had in a while that really confused me. The aggressiveness of it managed to really downplay a lot of its subtleties at first.

As they blossomed, it tasted almost like a whole new beer.

Stone still puts out excellent brews.

This certainly is one of them.

rhône whiteS a favorite ChoiCe in Spring As spring makes its reluctant arrival, we reach for whites that relieve us and refresh us after a winter of red wines with big flavor from harsh tannins.

It may be tempting to break into the season with a sauvignon blanc or rosé. But Rhône whites, with their tropical fruit and rich texture, remain a favorite of the shoulder season.

Viognier, marsanne and roussanne, the best-known of the Rhône whites, are produced around the world.

Outside of Rhône, in other parts of Southern France, you can find some very reasonably priced wines made from Rhône varieties.

You often can score great deals on these wines for no other reason than they come from lesser-known places that only got their act together in terms of wine quality in recent decades.

Most often, French Rhône wines are blends without a grape name. I searched the sale rack for super deals and found some from the 2015 vintage, about as old as I’d go with an inexpensive white wine. Fortunately, these all tasted pretty fresh. Another plus about French wines from little-known regions and producers: no one really knows what you paid for them. They look and sound impressive on a bar or dinner table.

Outrageously inexpensive Chapelle Paul Blanc Costières de Nîmes combines elegance and fruitfulness with

mineral notes and some tropical fruit character for a good allaround, anytime wine. Stock up and drink it before the fall. $11.

HHHH 1/2 Of the Rhône white varieties, viognier is the only one that attained much name recognition in the United States. I love it. The variety seemed to suffer from a lack of an identifiable style, however, so customers have a hard time pigeonholing it.

Domaine La Grange “V” 2016 Pays d’Oc Viognier leans toward a fruit-forward, New World style. Bright and somewhat sweet, it shows apricot and tangy citrus with floral notes. $15.

HHHH Chateau La Croix des Pains les Trois 2015 Venetoux Villages Blanc brings together white grenache, roussanne and vermentino (which the French call “rollo”). The lean wine offers green apple flavors and a very crisp finish, making for a basic refresher and a nice before-dinner drink. $14.

HHH 1/2 On a recent round in a store, I saw some similar sale wines from Gascony and elsewhere for under $10. If they come from 2015 or later, they are worth trying.

STILL AROUND: PART TWO

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB — ‘Wrong Creatures’ THE GOOD: American altrockers BRMC are still plugging away on their eighth.

THE BAD: “Creatures” is highly predictable but not bad.

THE NITTY GRITTY: These guys have been reliable since the turn of the century, a working ROCK band ripping off Velvet Underground’s bleakness, the fuzzy grind found on mid-period Jesus & Mary Chain records and the guitar-fueled haze that fogged up just about any shoegaze catalog you may remember.

The formula remains just intriguing enough to make any hour-long session with the guys NOT seem like an exercise in repetitious excess. “Wrong Creatures” is no exception. Even when we’re hit with a bunch of mid-tempo sludge-fests across its middle, the album resonates.

The growling session conjures up images of any American desert or lost highway after dark. Warm, dusty and a little dangerous, these moody tunes roar and simmer in all the right places. Progress be damned — BRMC is the same as it ever was, but that’s cool.

BUY IT?: Your call.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS — ‘I Like Fun’ THE GOOD: The New York Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell) return with another quirky, infectious, indie pop playlist.

THE BAD: It’s business as usual, but with TMBG, that’s never bad.

THE NITTY GRITTY: Buy pretty much ANY of the group’s album’s and you know what you’ll get — jingle writers gone mad and penning tiny

pop masterpieces instead of pesky commercials.

They’ve done it rather prolifically for more than three sing-song decades now.

This time, you can groove to the seamless funk carrying “Push Back the Hands,” swim in the fuzzy surf guitar slathered all over the stomping “An Insult to the Fact Checkers” and revel in the downright weirdness that is the title track.

Personally, I’m quite smitten with the rolling and tumbling urgency of “When the Lights Come On.” Longtime fans won’t be disappointed. And newbies (I’m sure there are still SOME at this point) probably will be encouraged to delve into the back catalog after a few sessions of “Fun.” BUY IT?: Oh yeah.

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN — ‘How to Solve Our Human Problems’ THE GOOD: Scottish indie pop collective Belle and Sebastian returns with its 10th full-length (sort of) work.

THE BAD: The 69-minute long

player actually compiles three five-song “Human Problems” EPs the group released sporadically since November. That’s only bad if you shelled out a few pennies for some of those smaller collections. The track listing of all the EPs and this compilation are identical.

THE NITTY GRITTY: Technicalities aside, the new record is typical modern B&S. The band continues to progress and shed its pure “twee pop” roots, maintaining the gentle melodies while expanding the musical palette to include bigger rhythms and bolder arrangements.

Whether it’s the forceful and jumpy “The Girl Doesn’t Get It,” the quaint Baroque tones coloring “I’ll Be Your Pilot” or the country musings adding charm to “There Is an Everlasting Song,” mastermind Stuart Murdoch and company are in fine spirits, delivering another exquisite collection that only gets better the more times you indulge.

Danielle Fleming co-owns NOTE Fragrances, 401 Spruce St., Scranton, and recently opened the shop’s second location at 312 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Her pink peony fragrance has been featured by Ipsy, a nationally distributed, monthly cosmetic subscription service, and she has been featured in Elle and Cosmopolitan magazines and on MSNBC. Fleming graduated from Abington Heights High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Moravian College in Bethlehem and master’s degrees in mental health counseling and instructional leadership from Marywood University. She lives in Dunmore with her husband and co-owner of NOTE, Mark Bonfiglio.

What is it like to be back in your hometown?

There is always a sense of home. I spent my childhood and high school years here, and I also built my first business here. So it was coming home on a business level and a personal level, so it feels really good.

How did studying psychology, mental health counseling and instructional leadership lead you to opening a perfume studio?

I started studying the psychology of scent.

I was interning at the University of Scranton’s counseling center. I noticed that the students I was working with needed something else besides What is NOTE Fragrances? talking. We’ve had brides create their own fragrance to wear on their wedding day, and what’s more special than to have your own signature scent on your wedding day?

I did it for myself, and every time I wear the fragrance, I go back to the island I got married on. That is the powerful effect of aroma and how it works with our brain.

It’s fascinating to watch and see people. Some have been brought to tears going through the experience.

What inspires your ideas for scents?

I get inspired a lot by the environment, so a lot of my creations are based off of trips I’ve taken. Santal Woods is based off a walk I took on the coast of Maine.

Orchid Noir is based off of our honeymoon in St. Lucia.

At night, you could smell all the night’s blooming flowers and spices of the kitchen.

saw some fallout from customers in (Clarks Summit). So as we were approaching this past holiday season, we said let’s do a pop-up (shop) and get our Clarks Summit customers to know this new brand, NOTE Fragrances. So we decided to pop up.

We were just a pop-up, but the feedback was so wonderful, and people really wanted us to stay. It beat our projections, and all the signs said stay.

What are some of your interests outside of the business?

I like to travel. My husband and I really love the Finger Lakes Region of New York, so we go up there quite a bit. We lived there for a year when we had a shop there. During that experience, I got into wine. I had the chance to become friends with a lot of wine-makers, so I watched them, and we actually developed a line of candles based off of those relationships.

What is something, personally or professionally, being a business owner has taught you?

What I’ve learned about myself is we can always handle more than we think. I’ve also learned that what you think is a really big deal, whether it’s good or bad, six months down the road, it’s just a blip on the radar. I’ve learned to become a better businessperson by not allowing perfection to hinder my progress.

A QUIET PLACE ★★★

Make a sound and they’ll kill you.

In horror movie after horror movie, the panicky potential victims hide in the closet or under the bed or in the shed or in the attic, hoping the demon or the ghost or the serial killer or the alien predator won’t spot them and rip them to shreds.

In the neatly spun and well-crafted supernatural thriller “A Quiet Place,” the humans don’t have to worry about the slimy, creepy, lizard-like creatures seeing them, because these particular monsters are literally blind.

Problem is, if you create a noise — any sudden aural spike in the prevailing ambient sound level, from knocking over an object to stepping on a loose floorboard to engaging in whispered conversation — you will trigger the incredibly sensitive hearing mechanisms of these creatures, and they will use that sound as a homing device, and they will end you in a split second.

John Krasinski is the director, co-writer and star of “A Quiet Place.” His real-life wife, Emily Blunt, plays his spouse in this movie. Krasinski is best known for playing Jim Halpert on “The Office,” and why not, given that was one of the best 10 comedies in television history and the Jim-Pam romance is one of the great TV love stories of all time.

Now that we have dispensed with that obligatory paragraph, props to Krasinski the filmmaker. His third effort as a feature director (after “Brief Interviews With Hideous Men” and “The Hollars”) is a major leap forward and serves notice he is a real talent behind the camera.

“A Quiet Place” doesn’t have the pinyou-to-your-seat originality of “Get Out,” or the psychological depth and pure scare impact of “Lights Out” or the wall-to-wall intensity of “Don’t Breathe,” but it is one of the smarter and more involving horror films of the last few years.

It takes a certain confidence of material and vision for a filmmaker to hit the ground running with a movie, plunging us into the

“A QUITE PLACE” story without exposition and trusting we’ll stay with it for a number of scenes.

Krasinski does just that — and with success — in “A Quiet Place.”

The first title card tells us it’s “Day 89” of ... something. Something very, very bad. Something so bad the world as we know it has ceased to exist, and most of the population has been wiped out by the aforementioned alien monster creatures that kill everything and anything that makes a sound.

The Abbotts — dad Lee (Krasinski), mom Evelyn (Blunt), daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and son Marcus (Noah Jupe) — are one of the few families that have figured out a way to survive.

They have a number of factors in their favor. They live on a farm in upstate New York, so growing crops isn’t a problem.

Dad has some excellent survivalist skills, from catching fish with traps in a nearby river to building sound-proof safe rooms in the house to wiring the place with surveillance cameras to setting up an elaborate lighting grid throughout the property.

Also, the teenage Regan is deaf, so everyone in the family knows how to sign.

They’ve known how to communicate in silence long before the aliens invaded.

(Millicent Simmonds, the deaf actress who plays Regan, is absolutely brilliant.)

Throughout the timeline, no matter what the situation — they need to warn

someone of imminent danger, the birth of a baby (newborns have a tendency to, um, cry), stepping on a nail and recoiling in pain, etc. — various members of the Abbott family must keep quiet. That’s a pretty nifty setup to keep the tension going from moment to moment.

The camerawork and the sets and the lighting — all superb. Blunt and Krasinski are lovely together, particularly in a scene where they find a moment of tenderness amidst the chaos and uncertainty, and dance to a certain Neil Young song.

Krasinski clearly enjoys invoking wellworn GOTCHA! scary movie moments, e.g., the sudden appearance of an evil alien in the background accompanied by a music sting as our hero remains oblivious, or the premature celebration of the monster’s death, or lingering on certain shots that all but announce, “We all know THIS is going to come into play down the road, right?”

I also got a sense of cinematic deja vu from time to time, due to some superficial similarities to M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs,” from the farm setting to the actual sounds the aliens make.

Not to suggest “A Quiet Place” doesn’t have its own signature style. This is the kind of film that delivers on about 75 percent of its promise and has you looking forward to the time when the director hits something all the way out of the park.
