‘Dancing Stars of Wilkes Wilkes-Barre’ Barre’

Local celebrities paired with professional dancers will face off on the dance floor Saturday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. during “Dancing Stars of Wilkes-Barre.”

Presented by KISS Theatre in Joe Amato East End Centre, Wilkes-Barre, the show mimics the popular TV show, “Dancing with the Stars,” but with a local twist. Seven local celebrities will be featured in this year’s dance-off. Tux, the official mascot of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, will take to the stage along with Fast Freddie Fabbri, Kyle Reed, Anne E. Rodella, Bruce Lefkowitz, Kimberly McLendon and Ed Ciarimboli.

WNEP-TV anchor and reporter Julie Sidoni and Dave Reynolds, an associate professor of theater at King’s College and artistic director of Gaslight Theatre Company, will host the event.

A People’s Choice trophy will go to the dancing team that receives the most votes from the public, and a Judge’s Choice trophy will go to the team that receives the highest score.

Tickets cost $25 and $35 for adults and $15 for students and are available at dancingstarsofwilkesbarre.com.

Join Scranton Films for the premiere of its first feature film, “Nick and Ophelia,” on Friday, Nov. 2, on the second floor of the Marketplace at Steamtown, 300 Lackwanna Ave., Scranton.

The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m., with the film starting at 7. A question-and-answer session will follow the screening, and audience members can meet the filmmakers and Scranton Films team.

The movie falls into the genres of romance, drama and horror.

Parental discretion is advised, as the film is not suitable for small children.

Vendors at the food court will be open to provide food and refreshments.

Founders Art Exhibit

View the artwork of three former faculty members who helped found Keystone College’s Linder Gallery in the Founders Art Exhibit, now showing at the La Plume college.

On display until Saturday, Dec. 1, the exhibit is a part of a series commemorating Keystone’s 150th anniversary and features pieces from Karl Neuroth, Cliff Prokop and Bill Tersteeg. The three professors worked together to develop the art department and, combined, have touched the lives of more than 10,000 students.

The gallery is on the first floor of the Miller Library, and entry is free. For gallery hours or more information, call 570-945-8335.

A Taste of Greater Pittston

Spend the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 4, sampling food and drinks from local restaurants, breweries and wineries at A Taste of Greater Pittston.

Pittston Memorial Library, 47 Broad St., will host the event from 2 to 5 p.m. in its John P. Cosgrove Center.

Only 200 tickets will be sold and cost $30 in advance, available at the library.

In addition to the food and drink samplings, guests can enjoy such activities as basket raffles and entertainment by Mike Dougherty. They will be able to vote for the best red wine, best white wine and best brew.

‘A Bad Year for Tomatoes’

Join Actors Circle as it presents the story of a television actress who, over her career, moves to a town to write her memoirs in “A Bad Year for Tomatoes.”

The show will take place at Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, Scranton, on Thursday, Nov. 1, through Saturday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. Directed by Art Walsh, the show stars Kelly Ann Walsh, Chris Eibach, K.K. Gordon, Carol Davis, Lorrie Loughney, Warren Cox and Justin O’Hearn.

In the play, the actress settles in Beaver Haven with the expectation that it will be a quiet place to write, but it always seems that someone is around to interrupt her.

Magick part of self-care for Country Witch founder

W

itches and pumpkin candles are everywhere this time of year.

For Heather Marsicano, that’s just everyday life.

The Sugarloaf Twp. resident owns Country Witch Candles, where she creates soy wax candles with natural oils, including seasonal favorites such as Autumn Spice and Pumpkin.

Marsicano, 30, also is a practicing witch and herbalist who makes spell candles for different intentions and oil blends and tinctures for everything from aromatherapy to upset stomach relief. This falls in line with her all-natural beauty routine as well, in which she uses handmade products or those with plant-based ingredients.

When she’s not running her business, she’s tearing down the stigma of witches and what it means to practice witchcraft.

She spoke with Hey, Beautiful about her work, natural beauty and how to incorporate magick into everyday life.

What are some of your favorite self-care routines? Do you incorporate magick into any of them?

I feel like everyone incorporates a little magick into their daily life. For me, to wind down, I like to light dried lavender petals. The smell is incredible, and lavender is known for its calming properties. I have a small cauldron on my altar filled with fresh lavender, which I burn before bed every night or on stressful days.

I enjoy hot baths, and I light candles that I make that are intended to calm the mind, body and soul.

Tell me about your beauty routine. What are some of your favorite products?

My beauty routine is made up of allnatural items. Some of my favorite beauty products are actually local. Bomd Bath and Body has my favorite line of bath bombs, and are great for those of us

with sensitive skin. They make amazing body and lip scrubs as well; my favorite is the Black Salt Sage body scrub that I use before any of my magickal workings. And lip balm. (Their) peppermint lip balm is so yummy, and prevents my lips from getting chapped and irritated.

How, if so, do you incorporate magick into your beauty routine?

A few of the beauty products I use are made by other witches, and are naturally magickal. Different soaps and scrubs are infused with herbs. And any witch knows that plants are inherently magickal.

You’re a practicing witch for 21 years. What are some things you want people to know about those who practice?

I consider myself an eclectic witch with some Wiccan influences, which simply means I pick and choose from many different traditions. I want people to know that there are so many different ways to practice witchcraft, and I want to get rid of the whole “devil worshippers” stigma.

Though I personally have no issues with anyone who does worship the devil — I support whoever you wish to worship — but most witches don’t even acknowledge the existence of the devil. A witch does not need to be religious to practice witchcraft, because witchcraft is just that, a craft. And for those “new witches” out there, remember that witchcraft can be anything you want it to be; no one person can tell you how to practice your craft. It’s yours.

Lake Ariel barbecue eatery builds on family tradition

W

hen Shannon Ives decided to become a restaurateur, she needed blessings from two of the most important men in her life.

First there was her grandfather, who passed on his business, Mr. Yock’s BBQ, to her a decade ago. Ives had shadowed him since she was 7 or 8 years old, watching him cook barbecue while she moved the fries and poured sodas for his customers at fairs and rib cook-offs.

The other was her 14-yearold son, whom she had raised after stepping away from working long nights and weekends in the food industry. When Ives realized the commitment necessary to meet customer demand by turning the catering and special-event business into a full-time job, she asked for her son’s OK. “It got to be more, so I had to make a leap of faith,” said Ives, a Madisonville native. “He told me to follow my heart.”

Since then, she has found complete happiness in picking up where her grandfather left of f, and even expanding the business in May to become a brick-andmortar restaurant found on Ledgedale Road in Lake Ariel, just as her predecessor always hoped to do.

“Every day, no matter what the struggle, I know I did the right thing,” Ives said. “It was his dream, too, but I made it come true for both of us.”

Named for Ives’ grandpa, Ron Yockey, who worked in sales for Hatfield Quality Meats for more than 30 years, Mr. Yock’s BBQ serves up a recipe that shows Yockey’s Kansas roots in its light-smoke, tomato-based sweet sauce.

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh, uses a dry rub on everything before she smokes it to perfection, which requires quite some time — 18 hours for brisket, 10 hours for pulled pork and five hours for ribs. Her onsite food-grade pellet smokers cook the meats over cherry wood, while her grills use only natural charcoal.

“My barbecue is probably my biggest success I’ve had,” Ives said. “Everybody comes back for more. We have a lot of repetitive customers. I get great feedback. It’s very rewarding.

As a proud local, she extends a discounted rate to nearby firehouses whenever they host fundraising dinners.

“I believe in giving back to the community,” Ives said.

Q: A:

W h at i s yo u r mu s i c b a ck ground?

In the beginning, the first band I was ever in was called Melded. It wasn’t good; we sounded really, really awful, but that band was really fun and a good learning experience. I met my friend Dan Rosler and my now-fiancee, Chelsea Collins, and I joined a band called A Fire with Friends for a little while. I met some other people, and I started a band called the Social State, and I played with them for probably seven or eight years. We put out an EP and two full-length records. That band fell apart, and I took some time off to focus on home life and writing music on my own. Then I decided I was going to make a record on my own, so I started University Drive.

Q: A:

What can people expect on your upcoming album?

We’re all in the studio recording things together. I wanted to make it a point to track everything live. We’re not time-correcting everything, or turning every vocal or making sure everything is smooth and slick. There are some songs that have a bit more of a slick production but the bulk of them have more of a, I don’t want to say raw, but a bit more of an edge. It’s funny how you can hear the difference of us tracking it live in the room together as opposed to just layering things one by one.

Q: A:

Does the album have a theme or message?

Back in January, my mother passed away unexpectedly. She was my biggest supporter in everything I did. Nobody else ever had that much belief in what I was doing. She wanted to see me do what I loved to do. It’s emotionally heavy and super dark at times.

It’s my kind of way to pay tribute to somebody who had such a big impact in my life. There are a lot of sad moments on it. I don’t know how else to be expressive and honest. It was a horrible circumstance, but I’m happy something beautiful came of it.

Q: A:

What is your favorite music venue to play at?

I have to say the Keys. I love playing at the Keys, and that’s not to put down any other venue. The Keys, and Jenn the owner, in specific, have been like family away from family. They actually threw a three-day festival in honor of my mother. It was called “A Weekend for Doreen.” All the bands played in honor of her.

What first got you interested in playing music?

When I was really little, we had a next-door neighbor to my grandparents. He had an acoustic guitar, and I asked him for some lessons. A couple years later, I went to Gallucci Music, which is no longer there. Then I moved to Scott Twp., and a friend introduced me to Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” and it What is the most challenging was world-shattering. A:

I’ve been doing this for a really long time locally. A lot of younger musicians have said really nice things.

I don’t expect it or necessarily agree with what they’re saying. There are super talented and super driven people.

When someone says to me, “Hey, that song really spoke to me and helped me a lot,” that’s 100 percent of the reason I do this. I let my dream of rock and roll fame go a few years ago. I do it more because I feel connected to something bigger than me, and if it helps other people in other ways, I feel like that’s a good reason to do it.

Q: A:

If you could perform with one musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?

My favorite would be Kurt Cobain.

He changed the direction of my life. I would do so much to have a chance to bring him back and just be able to sing harmonies on a song with him. He is amazing.

Q: A:

What hobbies and interests do you have outside of music?

I don’t really have a lot of hobbies, but I love my dog, and I love my fiancee. (My fiance and I) do a lot of stuff together and write silly songs.

When we get the chance to make music together, we write really funny things. I also like my dog Wilco; he’s named after the band Wilco. He’s a western Pomeranian mix, and we got him from Griffin Pond Animal Shelter a couple years

ago. He is our best friend.

Q: A:

What is something about you that would surprise most people?

Probably that I did martial arts.

My friends know that, but I don’t think most people know. I did it for five or six years, and before music, that was music.

Q: A:

Have you had a moment or time in your life that helped shape who you are today?

Recently, on Facebook, I just posted a song that my mom used to play for me. She’d force me to dance with her around the kitchen to the song “In My Life” by the Beatles. When I was a kid, I couldn’t stand it, and I hated the Beatles. When I started to get into music, I realized how complex and beautiful that song is. The moments I really think of as “defining moments” all involve her. She was a huge music fan, and she taught me a lot about compassion and trying to go in with good intent with people. Anything good that anyone has to say about me, I owe entirely to her.

Plains Twp.’s River Street Jazz Cafe to celebrate 25 years

omarkamilestonetwoand-a-half decades in the making, River Street Jazz Cafe has planned a night to remember.

The Plains Twp. live music venue will present its 25th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, Nov. 2, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Guests will enjoy drink specials served by past managers filling in as guest bartenders and catering by Grieco’s Restaurant, as well as a surprise lineup of popular past performers to be revealed that night.

“We’ll see who shows up, but it’s going to be a great night of music,” club owner Rob Friedman said.

Longtime Jazz Cafe musician Tony Carfora, who started sitting in during the club’s early open mic nights as a kid, will emcee the night.

“He grew up in this area, and he came to the jazz club about 25 years ago when he was 12 or 13 years old. He was a very shy young boy, but he would come and ask to play his saxophone at different shows,” F riedman recalled. “Let’s just say he’s come a long way and is an amazing player.”

Carfora now makes a living as a full-time musician in New York City, but he gladly made the time to come home to host the anniversary show.

“When (Friedman) asked me to do this, I said, ‘Whatever it takes, I’ll clear my schedule to help out,’” Carfora said. “From the get-go, I’ve been there. It was really like a musical family, a home base, your roots where you get your start from. It’s that place you can always go to and call home. I consider it an honor.”

Carfora is one in a long line of area players who got their feet wet in live performance at the Jazz Cafe, and

members from many of the club’s most requested acts — such as the Collective, DaddyO and the Sax Maniax, Teddy Young and Big Daddy Dex — were invited to return for the anniversary.

Over the years, the Jazz Cafe also hosted notable national acts, such as Tim Reynolds of Dave Matthews Band, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band, Average White Band, Bo Diddley and more.

The diverse musical history of the venue may not reflect its name the way Friedman originally hoped, but it represents how the club became a haven for audiences to find quality entertainment nonetheless.

“It started as a blues and jazz club. That’s what I hoped to bring to the area, because I traveled to Philly and New York to go to jazz clubs,” Friedman said. “It’s evolved that now the jazz club is very little jazz, very little blues. It’s really a variety of music that hopefully brings in crowds.

We’ve had to adapt. The trick is, our room was built for music. It’s not a corner bar where we said, ‘Let’s see if we can squeeze in a band.’”

Friedman noted that owning several other area businesses, from restaurants to an electric supply and service company, has been crucial in helping him keep the Jazz Cafe open.

“I’m not surprised when I see live music clubs open and close. If I didn’t have other businesses, if I had to rely on the jazz club, I’d be in trouble,” he said. “It’s really a labor of love. Not one that’s a profitable venture, for sure.”

Heather Szeliga, the Jazz Cafe’s manager for the past three years, said the venue’s mission of staying a destination for great shows by local and traveling talent makes it dear to area music lovers,

too. She hopes the 25th anniversary concert will show the mutual love among the dedicated patrons, musicians and staff who have kept the venue viable for so long.

“It’s the event of the year (for us),” Szeliga said. “We’re all about bringing in the best: different genres of music to satisfy everyone’s tastes, the best sound, the best atmosphere. We try to do dinner specials for intimate shows and late-night menus that go to 2 a.m. We just want to try to make it different than any of the venues in the area.

Jonah Hill’s coming-of-age comedy drama ‘Mid90s’ spot-on

J

onah Hill’s “Mid90s” is a very time-specific period piece about a particular subgroup of teen culture, but like many a successful coming-of-age story, it brims with near-universal truths and experiences.

Who can’t relate to the socially awkward 13-yearold who will do just about anything to gain acceptance into the “cool” group? Or the parent doing everything possible to remain connected to the little boys who have transformed into surly teens? Or the moment when you realized some of the slightly older kids you once worshipped are lost and confused and heading straight toward a dead-end?

“Mid90s” is set in the summer of 1996 and is told mostly through the eyes of Stevie (Sunny Suljic), an introverted kid who looks even younger than his 13 years. (Writer/director Hill was 13 in 1996.)

Stevie looks up to his big brother, Ian (Lucas Hedges, in yet another fine performance), even though Ian alternates between ignoring Stevie and beating the crap out of him. (On Ian’s 18th birthday, Stevie hands Ian a hand-wrapped mix tape of carefully selected songs. Ian virtually ignores the gift.

Stevie’s still too young to realize how sad and lonely Ian’s life is.)

Katherine Waterston (delivering fine work) is their single mom, Dabney, who is fiercely determined to keep the family together, but often feels as if she’s underwater and taking the boys down with her.

Little wonder Stevie is desperate to become a part of something far outside the house, something bigger, something cooler, something badass — something like the local skateboarding culture.

Mini movies First Man: For this alternately operatic and intimate moon-mission film, director Damien Chazelle gives the Neil Armstrong role to Ryan Gosling, who has a natural affinity for playing characters who internalize their feelings. Put it right up there with “The Right Stuff” and “Apollo 13” in the ranks of the best movies ever made about NASA. Rated PG-13 for some thematic content involving peril, and brief strong language. 138 minutes. ★★★★ Halloween: Four decades after Michael Myers killed five people on the night of Oct. 31, survivor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, badass terrific) is now a tightly wound, heavily armed grandma convinced the imprisoned Myers will escape and kill again — and so he does. punk — but, of course, he doesn’t see it that way. For Stevie, this is a glorious, magical time.

Hill films these episodes, along with more than a few skateboarding montages, in a deliberately ragged and jagged style that effectively captures Stevie’s exhilaration at his newfound “coolness” without celebrating the sheer, dumb, self-destructive nature of this group. As

you’d expect, the music and the fashion and the pop culture references (and the politically incorrect language) are spot-on for the period. Hill’s ear for dialogue yields some insightful observations and some wickedly funny one-liners.

The ending feels manufactured, particularly concer ning one character’s reaction to a pivotal incident. But for most of the ride, “Mid90s” feels like an accurate time capsule, and a relatable journey even if you’ve never been on a skateboard in your life.

Giving back in gratitude

‘God Box’ show to raise money for local hospice

rief can be the mother of all emotions.

Ever since her mom died suddenly in 2006, Mary Lou Quinlan’s journey to acceptance pinballed between humor and pain before finally landing at release.

Quinlan shared this emotional odyssey in her best-selling book, “The God Box,” so named for the collection of prayers, notes of goodwill and faith-filled wishes for every person her mom came into contact with over several years, which were discovered after her passing.

Quinlan turned her book into a heartfelt one-woman play — in which she plays herself along with her mom, dad and brother — called “The God Box, A Daughter’s Story,” which comes to Scranton on Thursday, Nov. 8. The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Theater at North, 1539 N. Main Ave. Tickets cost $25, and proceeds benefit Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

From the first performance five years ago, Quinlan’s show has hit stages hundreds of times, including at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival, off Broadway and in 10 cities in Ireland. She has donated nearly half a million dollars from these performances to local women’s health-related charities in memory of her mom.

The Nov. 8 show marks Quinlan’s return to the Electric City after a well-received keynote speech at the Society of Irish Women’s St. Patrick’s Day dinner in March. Before the program began, Quinlan gravitated to Laurie Cadden and Diane Baldi, R.N., who respectively are the development director and CEO of Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

“When we made that connection, I realized they were the exact women to talk to,” Quinlan said during a recent phone interview from New York. “The play opens in Pennsylvania, in Bucks County, so it felt like it belongs here.”

Quinlan donated proceeds from book sales at the society dinner to Hospice of the Sacred Heart — which has offices in WilkesBarre, Dunmore and Moosic — and after sharing portions of her story in her speech, she promised to bring her play to Scranton in the future.

“We were just so honored and pleased and grateful for her to donate the proceeds back in March and come back and do the same,” Baldi said. “What I saw at that dinner was remarkable, and I thought she was so engaging. When she spoke, you could hear a spoon drop. She’s kind, she’s witty, she’s smart, and she speaks from her heart.”

“The God Box” book reads as a memoir and tribute to a mother-daughter relationship, while the play takes the perspective of a daughter who has lost her mother and digs into the soul of someone who loves, goes through the losing process, and tries to keep control and hold on, Quinlan explained.

“It’s the experience I had from growing up — truly growing up — and learning to let go,” she said. “It has music, video and visuals throughout. It’s a recreation of a life story and a very human experience.”

Handing over the proceeds is Quinlan’s way of giving back in gratitude for the care her parents each received at the ends of their lives, she added. “‘The God Box’ is an expression of (my mother’s) compassion,” Quinlan said. “It only seems right the play itself have a heart to it.”

The show’s tagline, “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want to call your mother,” came naturally from the conversations Quinlan

had with the audience after performances.

Those who lost moms told her how they wished they could talk to them once more, and those with mothers still living expressed a need to reach out after seeing the play.

“It does bring back beautiful memories that they have about their mothers. In the end, it’s about them and their families,” Quinlan said. “People also say they want to go home and start their own God box, and my mother would be so thrilled about that.”

Theatergoers often question her about how she handles telling such a sad and personal story on stage, but Quinlan called it the best way to remain positive about the woman she misses.

“I feel like she’s with me when I do this play,” Quinlan said. “I get to have her and keep her in this world.”

Nine Inch Nails shines as Gorillaz, Orbital serve tepid sequels Nine Inch Nails — ‘Bad Witch’

THE GOOD: Nine Inch Nails’ ninth finds mastermind Trent Reznor taking some serious musical chances.

THE BAD: Six tracks in 30 minutes blurs the lines between EP and LP. Or does “Bad Witch” simply leave you craving more darkness?

THE NITTY GRITTY: If Reznor ever attempted to make a loose SOUL album, this might be it. The man plays copious amounts of saxophone within the mix, which detracts some power from the usual electronic buzz and hum. Some moments even find Reznor channeling his dearly departed friend and collaborator David Bowie. Smoky bits such as “God Break Down the Door” or the funky “Over and Out” wouldn’t feel out of place during that artist’s mid-’80s rhythmic period.

The affair also works seamlessly as a whole, jumping from the traditional NIN angst of “S--- Mirror” to the aforementioned Bowie-isms to haunting instrumentals such as “I’m Not from This World.” It’s a record that feels both strikingly human and eerily detached all at once.

BUY IT?: Surely.

Gorillaz — ‘The Now Now’ THE GOOD: British virtual band Gorillaz comes back (already) with its sixth.

THE BAD: If last year’s “Humanz” had too many guests and not enough Damon Albarn out front, “Now Now” is the exact opposite.

Now it’s 90 percent Albarn and a lack of fresh ideas. Maybe if we MERGE the two albums. Hmmmm…

THE NITTY GRITTY: There are some satisfying moments here. The slick electropop carrying “Humility,” the urban swagger of “Hollywood,” the simple beauty that is “Idaho” — they all work. Too bad other parts feel unfinished. “Lake Zurich” gets off to a funky start but fizzles. “Fire Flies” and “One Percent” are tepid, half-baked jams that would have once been B-sides.

Albarn has released a LOT of new music over the past half-decade — a Blur reunion record, a solo album and now two Gorillaz sets. Maybe it’s time to relax and recharge the batteries. Last year, I called the Gorillaz catalog one of diminishing returns. For the time being, it’s leveled off.

Orbital — ‘Monsters Exist’ THE GOOD: British electronic duo Orbital (brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll) get together AGAIN for their ninth.

THE BAD: “Monsters” makes no bold leaps forward. Still…

THE NITTY GRITTY: The album could be considered a welcome return to form. Orbital first called it quits around 2004, just as the ’90s electronic golden age was shutting down for good. It reformed briefly around the turn of the decade, and then again last year. A series of live shows got the creative juices flowing, and “Monsters” is the result.

The proper set is a tight, nine-song opus that sees the brothers using their old tricks — multi-layered seamless beats and basslines, ethereal vocal loops, whirring hypnotic synths, and a clean and shiny mix. There’s also a bonus disc of “leftovers,” some of which are just as infectious as the main show.

The record’s only drawback is a lack of differentiation from the existing catalog. “Monsters” ends up an enjoyable run through familiar grooves, but maybe it’s just for the diehards.

It makes sense that women — on average, smaller and weaker than men — would be higher in agreeableness. Psychologists believes that women’s tendency to default to polite acquiescence in the face of conflict is an evolved tactic to reduce their chances of being physically harmed.

As a woman, it’s likely you’re a high scorer in the agreeableness department. Recognizing your propensity to be “nice” allows you to preplan to act in your best interest —

To unpack what this means, behaviors you repeat become automatic — meaning you eventually just do them mindlessly; deciding whether to do them is no longer part of the process.

To kick off the campaign for the new gym-going you, do this robo-gym-going thing every day for two weeks, and then you can pull back to whatever your normal gym schedule would be. Give yourself a sense of accomplishment by monitoring your behavior. Check off days you go work out on a goal attainment app, or just color them in on a calendar. Giving yourself visual evidence of your progress should help you stay motivated during that time period before the physical results start to show.
