The President May 2013 Dear Members of the Great Class of 2013: Way back in September 2009, I welcomed you to Penn at Convocation. From the start, I had a strong sense of just how accomplished, how full of promise, and how unique you all are. After all, you were the very first class in Penn's history to officially join the University in the cathedral of basketball, the Palestra. And this same sense of special occasion and historic firsts has defined your years at Penn. On that September day four years ago, I offered you three tips for making the most of your Penn experience. I advised you always to ask good questions, to resist the lure of easy answers, and to fearlessly develop your own unique talents, personality, and passions. Graduates, you not only took my advice to heart—you have in turn taught me and everyone at Penn a thing or two along the way. You have enriched your home-away-from-home in the laboratories and classrooms, on the playing fields, among our neighbors, and out in the world. The Class of 2013 leaves Penn an even stronger place now than when you arrived.

The Sphinx Board of Governors also congratulates the 2013 Honorary Sphinx Inductee, Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD. He is the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, and Chair, Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy. Dr. Emanuel is also the brother of Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, IL and Ari Emanuel, Hollywood superagent, as well as author of the recent book, Brothers Emanuel: A Memoir of an American Family. The Sphinx Board of Governors also congratulates Alec Miller, Engineering & Wharton 2013, winner of the 2013 Paul Miller Leadership Award. The award is named in honor and memory of the late Paul Miller, C’83. Despite suffering from dwarfism, Paul Miller excelled in campus and public service leadership as a former Scribe of the Society and Mask & Wig performer. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Paul Miller became a leading author of the Americans with Disabilities Act, distinguished Commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, 1994-2004, and until his untimely death in 2010, a law professor at the University of Washington. Alec Miller, (no relation to Paul Miller), won the award for his outstanding contributions as a “leader of leaders” and extensive public service to the University of Pennsylvania community, as Chairman of the Nominations and Elections Committee, amending bylaws to ensure the broadest possible inclusion of under-represented constituencies on the University Council; for his commitment to the complete Penn experience through his leadership of the Engineering Student Activities Council, Engineering Deans’ Advisory Board, and the Penn pre-orientation program, PENNacle; and for upholding high standards of scholarship in the Management and Technology program and as a Wharton Teaching Assistant.
