Dear CNBAM Judges: I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Lindsey Miller for CNBAM’s 2014 Designer of the Year. Lindsey has worked as a graphic designer at Central Michigan Life for two years. During this time I have been impressed with Lindsey’s eye for design and passion for advertising. This speaks through her work and her enthusiasm she displays at CM Life. One of the things that truly sets Lindsey apart from the many good designers we’ve had over the years is her sense of “team” and her desire for CM Life to always put its best foot forward with our clients. Lindsey will take the time to evaluate the initial design ideas from the account executives and come up with design options she think are better suited for a client. Lindsey expresses these ideas to the account executive working with that particular client. She will sit down with an account executive to come up with a creative campaign to pitch to an advertiser. Her ability to think out of the box and come up with uniquely designed advertisements, have helped our advertisers do a better job of capturing the student market. This willingness to invest in the outcome paints CM Life in a positive light to our customers, and makes her a valuable part of our team.

This fall, Lindsey took on the task of rebranding and redesigning our Best of Central Michigan edition. Our goal was to transition this from broadsheet to magazine format, which meant she worked tirelessly to recreate the templates, section headings, images and headers. Lindsey’s design gave a fresh look to a very stale product. With this rebranding she also created new online rectangle ads to promote the edition and window decals for advertisers to display on their store windows. Another project Lindsey jumped into was our focus on producing more creative, innovative ad units in our paper. As mentioned earlier, Lindsey loves to think out of the box and these designs stretched her creativity. She created a pumpkin stand at the bottom of one our pages for our advertiser, Papa’s Pumpkin Patch and for Runner’s Performance Store her ad design jumped from the page as the runner crossed the finish line. These designs were well received by the advertisers and the readers. You couldn’t miss them on the page. Lindsey is a wonderful designer with abilities on par with those in the professional industry. It is for all these outstanding qualities, and more, I recommend Lindsey Miller for the award of CNBAM’s 2014 Graphic Designer of the Year. Sincerely,

Kathleen Simon Assistant Director, Student Publications Central Michigan University

CNBAM Selection Committee: It is with great pleasure that I recommend Lindsey Miller for CNBAM’s Graphic Designer of the Year. Lindsey started on CM Life’s design team last year and since day one, I have been impressed with her level of talent, her diligent efforts and her willingness to make every project succeed. She has always been professional, & considerate. She is expedient, while maintaining the utmost quality in workmanship. She is a great collaborator with the sales staff, making thoughtful recommendations, and is always good at keeping the clients’ needs in the foreground. She pays attention to aesthetics, communicative structure, and has a strong command of all the technical aspects of design. These characteristics alone make her a great asset to our design staff. They are not, however, the reason that I am recommending Lindsey. The truth is, all of those skills are expected of our designers. At CM Life, we pride ourselves on being a team that is committed to excellence. We care not only about putting our best efforts out there, but also in pushing the limits to be the best in our field. With only two semesters under her belt, Lindsey has taken her role to another level, and really coming into her own in her both her decisive approach to design, and in her ability to assume a key leadership role in our design team. Lindsey truly encompasses all of the professional ideals we strive for at CM Life.

When our Best of Central Michigan product underwent changes size, layout, structure, and promotion, Lindsey took complete charge the process, working tirelessly, and ultimately, plucking it out of it’s hum drum state, and injecting it with classic hipster style and brilliance. Lindsey didn’t stop there. She also coordinated all of the print design concepts with an animated approach for all of our online promotions. I could go on and on about Lindsey’s design skills. She was instrumental in creating a variety of advertising concepts that would allow us to wrap editorial, woven around innovative advertising shapes on the page. The clients rave about them and, more importantly, her designs have been successful in turning at least three clients who weren’t advertising very often, into major clients whose ads dominate and “rock the page.” Lindsey loves every aspect of design and she really excels in it. Her passion is contagious, making her a great mentor for her fellow designers. She has the ability to draw them in, but she is the kind of leader who provides a solid foundation, while effortlessly allowing her entire team to shine – that takes a special kind of leadership. It is with both pride and enthusiasm that I recommend Lindsey Miller for CNBAM’s Graphic Designer of the Year. She resonates all of the qualities you are looking for in an exemplary designer.

Sincerely,

Dawn Paine

THE REACTION

CONTINUED FROM 1A

Taylor Ballek | Photo Editor Retired CMU professor Doug Berry and his son walk down the sidewalk of the Dearborn Amtrak Train Station on Saturday where they often spend their evenings watching the trains pass to help with Patrick’s autism on Saturday. Berry saved his son among others Sept. 7 when he stopped a gunman from shooting.

“Patrick is the real hero.” Doug Berry, former CMU professor

In the middle of a shift change, on Sept. 7, a dozen Dearborn police officers stormed the gunman as they left the station. Attempting suicide by cop, the man was found despondent and depressed, officers said. His gun was loaded with armor-piercing bullets, and he was wearing a bullet-proof vest. Returning home on the night of the incident, Berry was met by his tearful wife, Cindy. A close friend of Cindy’s was married to a Dearborn police officer uninvolved in the case. “It was very emotional,” Cindy said. “The thought of what had been prevented was very scary. It has just been amazing. A lot of people have reached out.” But as far as train watching is concerned, Cindy intends to leave it to her hero husband. Awarded the Civilian Commendation the following Thursday, Berry was presented the award by Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad. His son Patrick, who was diagnosed with autism at two years old, was in attendance as well. “The Dearborn Police Department commends your actions on Sept. 7, 2013,” Haddad wrote. “Your alertness and willingness to get involved prevented a tragedy and a potential loss of law enforcement personnel. Your courage and willingness to put safety of others before your own is truly admirable.”

A media blitz ensued in the next few days. Berry was interviewed by reporters from the Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, ABC, NBC, The Huffington Post and USA Today. When the father and son returned to the station, they were met by two film crews. The story then was distributed by the Associated Press and was visible across the globe. “I came home that day so geeked,” Berry said. “It’s been a bizarre series of events. It was so interesting to be in the center of media attention. It all happened in just 48-72 hours.” With multiple stories in high-profile media outlets, Berry and his son returned to the station days later to a different response than usual. Patrick even received pieces of train memorabilia as a gift from an engineer at the station. “Usually people kind of scowl at Patrick,” Berry said. “But on this day, people were smiling at us. He’s still completely unaware of what happened, but just to have people react positively to him was a miracle in itself.” Berry visits the train station with Patrick almost every night. He estimated they’ve watched trains come in up to 200 nights per year, for the past 18 years. Non-verbal, Patrick finds solace in the sights and sounds of the trains in motion. “Patrick is the real hero,” Berry said. “Here is a kid who has been defined, his whole life, by what he can’t do. One thing he can do is get his old man to the train station every night. I would have never been able to make that call without him. It was just being in the right place at the right time.”

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Resigning from his job as an advertising instructor at Central Michigan University in 2008, Berry decided it was time to spend more time with Patrick. Now 20 years old, Patrick’s needs began to exceed the care of his mother, so Berry stepped in to give her a breather. “He likes to do the same things every day,” Berry said of his son. “He expects to see the train. It helps him relax. It keeps him happy, and it’s a break for his mother.” A popular teacher at CMU, Berry still misses the classroom and making connections with eager young minds. His experiences as a mentor and educator have proven invaluable throughout his life. “I loved my students,” Berry said. “When I walked away to spend more time with Patrick, I knew it would be the thing I’d miss the most.” His coworkers expected nothing less from Berry. Journalism instructor Tim Boudreau said Berry worked closely with students to ensure their success at CMU. “Doug is very sensitive to other students’ needs,” Boudreau said. “He seemed generally interested in his students. If he noticed a students’ grades begin to drop, he’d try to help.” Boudreau said he heard about Berry’s case online through several newspapers. He said the heroic act was nothing more than he came to expect from the humble friend and colleague. “I kind of chuckled, because Doug would probably be embarrassed by all the attention,” Boudreau said. “He doesn’t seek the spotlight, but I do intend to razz him a little.” metro@cm-life.com
