Welcome to the 2020-2021 Annual Report Once again, we find that the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted CMCC, but the resilience of our students and employees has allowed CMCC to continue to flourish. This year started off with CMCC proudly graduating the Class of 2020 in June and then preparing for the new class of students starting in the fall. In-person AGMs were cancelled across Canada, so our ability to host alumni events in the provinces was impeded. On campus events were also cancelled, but we hosted several successful online interactive events in their place. Throughout the year, no lectures were held on campus, the Eatery (cafeteria) remained closed, and many employees worked from home. Fortunately, CMCC’s Force Sensing Table Technology (FSTT®) continued to thrive with a dozen tables shipped to other chiropractic programs, further extending CMCC’s global impact.

Despite the pandemic, CMCC attained several other major accomplishments and our message this year will highlight several of those successes, along with some of the challenges we faced, presented in a chronological order.

June 2020

July 2020

The new fiscal year (FY2021) began with CMCC in a healthy financial position, having closed out FY2020 with a positive balance, despite the ups and downs of the investment market and high costs related to the pandemic. The auditors provided CMCC with a clean, unqualified audit and the new budget for FY2021 included funding for numerous new initiatives and projects to allow CMCC to make continued progress on its strategic plan. Our clinic management team was able to work with Year IV students scheduled to graduate in June 2020 and certify their completion of competency assessments, finishing with a virtual OSCE. Degrees were conferred on the Class of 2020 in a virtual convocation ceremony with greetings extended to the class from the Board, distinguished leaders from the provinces, and national and international associations. Our hopes to hold a live convocation later in the year were subsequently dashed by pandemic restrictions. The Class of 2020 also had delays in entry to practice because of postponement of CCEB exams for several months. CMCC’s big 75th anniversary weekend and gala scheduled for June, combined with our annual Homecoming, sadly had to be canceled and rescheduled because of pandemic restrictions.

The summer was spent preparing for the new academic year and making contingency plans to deal with the ever-changing pandemic and possible new waves of infection. A comprehensive “Return to CMCC Campus COVID-19 Playbook” was developed to set forth the measures that would be implemented to guard against the spread of COVID-19 in classrooms, labs, offices, and clinics and help keep the CMCC community safe. It was based on best practices emerging from our national, provincial and municipal public health and regulatory bodies and the scientific literature. The student schedule for the fall term received a major overhaul to deal with the complexities of hybrid learning, labs on campus that had to be spread out over many spaces, numerous Zoom sessions, and delivery of online lectures. Faculty members pre-recorded most of their fall lectures using CMCC’s Panopto® digital platform.

August 2020 Our new academic year was launched on August 24, welcoming 199 new students into the Class of 2024. This was the first class to begin its studies under the shadow of the pandemic and even Orientation week, normally filled with live social events, had to be held virtually. Provincial

Ministry restrictions limited CMCC to no more than 50 persons in any learning space. Technique labs had to be set up in the CCPA Hall to allow for appropriate physical distancing. To prevent further stress on our students, tuition was not increased for the academic year. CMCC clinics across the GTA resumed most operations since the initial total shutdown, but the allowed capacities for patient scheduling and number of learners remained restricted. Interns and clinic faculty used telehealth services to provide continuing care to many patients. The Rexdale clinic site was still closed, so these patients were treated in rooms set up on the CMCC campus.

September 2020 Between waves of the pandemic, we were able to host our annual Ontario BackSwing alumni golf event, but only in a modified form with fewer participants and no gatherings for lunch or dinner. Despite this, BackSwing generated a respectable level of donations and sponsorships, making it a successful fundraising event.

October 2020 CMCC hosted several virtual training events for recent graduates, providing them with opportunities to hone their skills in diagnosis and case management while waiting for the postponed CCEB Component C exams to be held. We also found individual spaces for about 100 students wishing to take CCEB Components A and B in an online format rather than to travel to the test sites. Researchers at CMCC learned that four grant submissions were awarded funding. Sadly, Dr. Glenn Engel, a highly regarded CMCC faculty member for over 50 years, passed away. The second wave of the pandemic hit Ontario hard and CMCC decided to maintain its hybrid format through the end of the academic year, with all lectures and small groups, along with many labs, being delivered online and only laboratories in anatomy, technique and clinical diagnosis being conducted on campus.

November 2020 CMCC completed the initial drafts of its self-study reports to be submitted in 2021 to the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) accreditors in Canada and the US. Over the next several months, drafts were reviewed by the Board of Governors, administration, employees and Students' Council to ensure the final reports were factual, complete and transparent. At the end of the month, the Ministry ordered private higher education institutions, including CMCC, to further restrict the number of allowed persons in a learning space to only 10. This resulted in further distribution of chiropractic technique tables into every available space on campus and hiring of many more faculty tutors to supervise the labs. Just prior to this directive, the gymnasium had been upgraded to expand Wi-Fi coverage, allowing it to be used as a testing centre, but this was put on hold because the space was needed for extra labs. The clinic system expanded its Community Based Clinical Education Program (Externship) that now provides additional training opportunities in several provinces for Year IV students and has become very popular.

December 2020 Ontario announced an extended lockdown, which resulted in our students who left the province during the holidays needing to undergo a mandatory 14-day isolation upon return to Ontario. The Rexdale Community Health Centre allowed for reopening of CMCC’s clinic, but at a different location in their hub. The Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee launched training programs to assist in fostering a more inclusive environment at CMCC. A new student information system was launched after months of intense preparation by IT, Student Services and Finance.

January 2021 Ontario issued a stay-at-home order, so all examinations were administered online, using a second device remote proctoring method so faculty members could observe students taking highstakes exams. Fortunately, CMCC was allowed to continue renovation of the old microbiology lab, resulting in a beautiful new multipurpose laboratory matching the former histology laboratory that was renovated the previous year. On-campus laboratories were allowed to resume at the end of the month. We received our annual report from the CCEB showing the CMCC student first time pass rates for Components A (95%) and B (99%). CMCC’s campus and Sherbourne Health clinics received approval for delivery of the publicly-funded provincial pilot of the GLA:D education and exercise program for knee and hip osteoarthritis.

February 2021 CMCC's budget development process was completed and a final budget prepared for the April Board meeting. Unlike the budget process in 2020, this year we had a greater understanding of the very high costs associated with delivering the academic program and maintaining a safe campus during a pandemic. We also learned that the pandemic was not negatively affecting our

enrolment, so forecasting revenue was easier. CMCC’s annual Practice OpportUnity event was held virtually to a resounding success because of the greater ability of participation by vendors and practitioners across Canada. An agreement between the KITE Research Institute, the research arm of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and CMCC was signed, building on current collaborative research.

March 2021 The in-person annual Association of Chiropractic Colleges educational and research conference was again cancelled, disappointing the many faculty members who were to present papers and conduct workshops. However, virtual delivery of the conference allowed some participation.

April 2021 The first of CMCC's two accreditation self-study reports was submitted to the CCE-US. This massive report was a comprehensive documentation of how CMCC meets the CCE accreditation standards and formed the basis for the site team visit in September 2021. This was CMCC's first application for accreditation by the US accrediting body. Graduation from a CCE-US program is a licensing requirement for many states and accreditation would provide our graduates with greater opportunities for professional practice south of the border. CMCC published the largest-ever biennial Research Report highlighting published research from June 2018 through May 2020.

May 2021 The second of CMCC's accreditation self-study reports was submitted to CCE-Canada (CCEC). The CCEC site team visit was scheduled for June 2021. CMCC ended FY2021 in a very strong financial position despite the extraordinary costs of the pandemic, evidence of excellent financial management.

Although the Annual Report is traditionally limited to the past year, because of the continuing impact of the pandemic we wish to provide some additional insight as to some developments over the past few months and what to expect during FY2022. The convocation ceremony for the Class of 2021 was again done virtually because of continuing restrictions on gatherings. Our 75th Anniversary celebration and Homecoming that had been cancelled in June 2020 was presented in a virtual format in June 2021 over three days .

Despite the pandemic, students still aspire to become chiropractors. None of our current students have withdrawn from our program because of the pandemic. Our strict protocols are credited with prevention of any oncampus transmission of the COVID-19 infection to date. We admitted 203 new students (Class of 2025) as we launched our new academic year on August 23, 2021. The new academic year began in a format similar to the way we ended the previous year in June, with all lectures and small group sessions, as well as many laboratories, being delivered online and laboratories requiring a physical presence (anatomy, diagnosis, chiropractic skills) being delivered on campus.

We are confident in knowing that patients will continue to need and rely upon our skills, our compassion and our ability to provide the chiropractic care that they desire. Financial Report CMCC has focused its efforts over the past few years to create a financial foundation upon which to sustain its reputation as a leader in chiropractic education, research and patient care. Since CMCC’s relocation and expansion of the campus at 6100 Leslie Street in 2004, more than $20 million has been raised through a dedicated capital fundraising campaign in support of CMCC’s facility-related long-term debt. It is with great pride and much appreciation to the broader community of CMCC donours to report that in early 2019 CMCC

completed repayment of its outstanding long-term debt. This achievement sets the foundation for CMCC to ensure institutional priorities are aligned with its strategic goals, while always striving to provide innovative student experiences that are supported with and through new technological advances in the chiropractic field.

CMCC’s overall stability in financial health is illustrated through two key ratios. The Working Capital Ratio @ 1.72 (2021) is considered above average as a liquidity measure that takes into consideration current assets that are more than adequate to offset current liabilities. From a leverage perspective, the Debt to Equity Ratio @ 0.0 (2021) illustrates the capacity to borrow funds in support of strategic investment opportunities and/or unanticipated operational challenges.

CMCC has intentionally set out to grow the Unrestricted Fund Balance to position the organization to take advantage of strategic investment opportunities, while mitigating against operational, reputational and business risks associated with unanticipated activities/events. Since May 31, 2015 the Unrestricted (General) Fund has grown from $700K to $10.7 million while establishing an aspirational goal of achieving the equivalent of a six-month operating reserve.

Although CMCC made it a priority to reduce its reliance on tuition related sources of revenue in recent years, these efforts are continuously challenged by narrowing profit margins within its ancillary business units and increased competition from online e-channels serving practitioner supply needs. With the impacts of COVID-19 continuing to challenge CMCC’s ability to realize pre-COVID levels for some categories of non-tuition based sources of revenue, top-line revenue in the Supply Centre & Bookstore, as well as marked improvements in unrealized investment gains are showing signs of recovery for the fiscal year ended May 31, 2021.

The following Chart illustrates the significance of year-over-year changes in ancillary (non-tuition) sources of revenues as a % of Total Revenues (2019 to 2021). Although improvements in reported revenues were recognized in the areas of Supply Centre & Bookstore and Investment Income between 2019 and 2021, such was not the case for Clinic Fees, Continuing Education and Membership Fees as a direct result of COVID related restrictions that hampered the ability to reach and/or engage with CMCC patients, customers and members. It is important to note that staff continued to diligently

review operational activities in areas supporting non-tuition sources of revenue to ensure alternate modes and methods of serving the needs of CMCC patients, customers and members were considered and where appropriate, made possible. Going forward, CMCC will benefit from the experiences of the past 12-18 months to ensure changes in mode/method of delivery that resulted in service improvements are imbedded into operational platforms and become the new standard of service excellence that CMCC continuously strives to achieve.

Understanding the Financial Statements

The financial statements that follow relate to operational activities for the year ended May 31, 2021 and the financial position for CMCC as of May 31, 2021 with comparative data as of May 31, 2020. The information contained therein is consistent with the Audited Financial Statements reviewed and reported on by BDO Canada LLP in its capacity as CMCC’s external auditor of record.

Statement of cash flows Describes the movement of cash in support of operational, financing and investing activities for the year ended May 31, 2021. During the 2021 fiscal year, cash of $6.8 million was generated from operating activities, while primary uses of cash in support of the purchase of capital assets, $0.8 million, and $2.9 million aligned with the purchase of investments.

Statement of financial position Describes the overall financial position or fiscal health of the organization. It itemizes assets and liabilities including deferred contributions and fund balances, and net assets of $42.3 million (2020 restated - $37.5 million).

Statement of operations and changes in fund balances This statement identifies the sources of revenue and uses of resources in the form of expenses for the General, Restricted and Endowment funds. This statement confirms that the General Operating Fund finished the year ended May 31, 2021 with revenues in excess of expenses in the amount of $3,905,339 (2020 restated - $531,748). The fund balances (General, Restricted and Endowment) each reflect increment growth in accumulated ending balances and represent the net asset values reported on the Statement of Financial Position. The reported fund balances represent the accumulated excess of revenues over expenses and interfund transfers since their inception.

Schedule of continuity of restricted funds Describes restricted fund balances that were received for specific purposes in accordance with the wishes/direction of the donour(s). Total restricted funds on hand as of May 31, 2021 were $1,052k (2020 - $949k) after taking into consideration 2021 interfund transfers in the amount of $164k (2020 - $175k). CMCC’s restricted funds include the Canadian Chiropractic Historical Association (CCHA); Governors’ Club; Capital Campaign Building; and Scholarship, Bursary and Other Trust Funds.
