Our History

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) was established by chiropractors who had gathered from across Canada to create a central association for the profession. It was their vision to establish an academic institution that would espouse a high standard of chiropractic education and become a catalyst for the cohesive development of chiropractic in Canada.

CMCC opened its doors on September 18, 1945, welcoming a large class of veterans returning from World War II. CMCC served Canada as the sole provider of chiropractic education until 1993, when a francophone program was established at l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in Québec. As a result, the majority of today’s practising chiropractors in Canada are graduates of CMCC.

CMCC’s Doctor of Chiropractic Program is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education Canada of the Federation of Canadian Chiropractic and by the Council on Chiropractic Education in the US. CMCC also provides postgraduate chiropractic residency programs in Chiropractic Clinical Sciences, Diagnostic Imaging, and Chiropractic Sports Sciences. In 2005, CMCC became the first private institution to offer a professional health care degree under the Government of Ontario’s Post-secondary Education Choice and Excellence Act, 2000.

Upon the conferring of degrees today, members of the Class of 2025 will join a rich legacy of chiropractors who are making an impact in health care across Canada and around the world. With over 7,000 alumni practising in 45 countries, CMCC graduates not only work in private practice and multidisciplinary health care settings, but also in research, in teaching, and in public policy development. The future of chiropractic is bright – and with the enthusiasm and promise of the graduates we celebrate today, so too is the future of health care.

The Chiropractic Oath

I do hereby swear before God and these assembled witnesses, both corporeal and spiritual, that I will do my utmost to keep this, my sacred, trusted oath, as a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, that henceforth:

I will esteem those who taught me this Art, Science and Philosophy of Chiropractic and with this torch of knowledge fashioned by Hippocrates, I will light the way to the understanding of those Natural Laws which preserve the human body as a fitting temple of the soul.

I will keep the physical, mental and spiritual needs of the sick as my foremost duty, ever searching for and correcting the cause of their disease to the best of my ability, insofar as my science is in the highest precepts of my Alma Mater and harmonious with the Vis Medicatrix Naturae.

I will at all times stand ready to serve humanity, without distinction of race, creed or colour, in my lifelong vocation of preventing and alleviating human suffering, wherever it may be found, by exemplifying in my own life a pattern of living in harmony with the Laws of Nature.

I will refrain from any act of wrongdoing and will regard the keeping of a patient’s confidence as a moral obligation, using any such information only in their best interests.

May God so direct the skillful use of my hands that I may bring strength to the sick, relief to the suffering, peace of mind to the anxious, and inspiration to all humanity to attain bountiful health that we may live this life to the fullest expression of its innate endowments.

I therefore solemnly swear to uphold these principles and precepts to the best of my ability, so help me God.
