Aunque las descripciones de algunos clubes están en Inglés, serán impartidos en español a menos que se indique en el título del mismo. La ciencia hoy en día es global, por lo que saber leer y comunicarse en inglés es esencial para hacer ciencia.

Como fluyen las rocas (¡y no es metafísica!) The workshop will include: - A brief introduction to mineralogy and the thermodynamic conditions found in the Earth. I hope to bring samples and have microscopic observations. - The second part will deal with rheology and include the deformation of analog materials (moth balls, silly putty) -The third part will deal with the establishment of deformation mechanisms maps, the students will create their own and reflect on their application to understand plate tectonics and its impact on our everyday life.

De la fuente ….a la fuente? Source to ... Source? (ENGLISH) Students will identify and quantify urban stormwater runoff in their communities, and propose novel conservation and/or reuse practices therein. The project begins with the analysis of a storm event, and the students are introduced to the concepts of hydrograph and hydrologic cycle, as well as standard runoff calculation procedures. The students then develop a method to address local urban runoff, considering the physical aspects of the system in terms of water quantity and quality, as well as various stakeholder perspectives.

Análisis de asociación a los largo del genoma y otros temas de genética médica y de poblaciones. This course will cover quantitative topics in human population genetics and applications to medical genetics, including the HapMap project, linkage disequilibrium, population structure and stratification, population admixture, and Genome Wide Association Analysis (GWAS). At the end of the course, the student will understand what are the current topics of interest in the medical and population genetics area, and would have the sufficient tools to carry on some basic analysis. The sections will be divided in theoretical and practical sessions, by the end of the week the students will have completed a GWAS analysis that will present at the CdeC Conference.

La fisiología es divertida! (ENGLISH) I would like to cover the topic of physiology in my workshop and teach the students what physiology is and how we as scientists study it. I would cover the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and involve the students in experiments such as measuring their lung capacity, measuring their blood pressure and pulse, graphing the data, drawing conclusions from the results, and discussing ways to maintain healthy cardiovascular and respiratory systems. If finances and availability permit, I would like to do a bovine or porcine heart and lung demonstration and dissection, as well.

Como las células cancerosas metastatizan al hueso: Una historia de villanos. Todos tenemos un pariente o conocido que sufre o ha sufrido de cáncer. Una enfermedad devastante que no distingue de edad, genero, ni clase social. Todos los tipos de cáncer pueden metastizar, es decir, las células cancerosas del tumor original pueden diseminarse e invadir diferentes partes en el cuerpo como son los huesos, el hígado, el cerebro y los pulmones. En este taller discutiremos: ¿Qué es el cancer metastático? ¿Como se disemina el cancer? ¿Porqué el hueso es un lugar paradísiaco para las células cancerosas? ¿Cómo se diagnostica la metástasis ósea? ¿Qué tratamientos se usan para la metastasis ósea?

El Concepto de Simetria en Matemáticas: Grupos y Acciones de Grupo In this club we will answer a variety of questions that will led us to interesting examples, notice patterns, find rules to explain the patterns, and discover the mathematics behind of symmetry. We will also discuss the formal definition of group through proof-type arguments. The students will be expected to work on proofs and examples by themselves and present them to their classmates for discussion.

Construye tu propia bacteria E.Coli is one of the most studied bacteria. Due to this fact there has been a lot of progress in the ability to manipulate the genome of E.Coli. This workshop would teach the students a number of ways how people do genome engineering on this bacterium. It would show the benefits of engineering the bacteria in order to make a specific chemical like gasoline. Also, it would show how those techniques could be used on human genome. If possible there could be a lab part that would actually make students engineer E.Coli to fluoresce green when the bacteria is breaking down sugars into glucose.

Geometría Proyectiva: La Geometria detrás de las Ecuaciones Algebraicas Este club tiene como objetivo explorar y descubrir la geometría detrás de las ecuaciones algebraicas. Por ejemplo, en el siglo XVI a los pintores Europeos les preocupaba producir proyecciones fieles de objetos en 3D en lienzos planos que son 2D. Las matemáticas necesarias para llevar esto acabo se formalizaron 200 años después, y es ahora llamada Geometría Proyectiva, la cual es modelada en términos de ecuaciones algebraicas. Combinando herramientas matemáticas modernas, y el uso del software Macaulay2, planeamos en este club develar estructuras matemáticas en dimensión 2, 3 y si el tiempo nos lo permite, en dimensión 4.

Usando la historia evolutiva para descubrir funcines genéticas (ENGLISH) The workshop will use shared evolutionary history to predict functions for uncharacterized human genes. The workshop will include exercises in basic bioinformatics (BLAST, sequence alignments, trees) using free resources and MATLAB, algorithm development, literature-based validation of predictions, and some analysis of experimental data. These will be accompanied by lectures/journal clubs on relevant concepts in evolution and cell biology. No prior programming experience required.

Sensación y percepción This workshop explores the different ways our bodies translate physical phenomenon in our environment into electrochemical representations. Each unit begins with hands-on demonstrations exploring the properties of a sense. The students are asked to make inferences on underlying mechanisms which lead to observed differences between sensation and perception. Subsequently, a lecture on current understanding of sense transduction and encoding as well as associated experimental techniques will be given.

Introducción a la biologia de sistemas y nanotecnología de ADN: Aplicaciones y perspectivas Durante un curso intensivo se pretende exponer herramientas matemáticas,biológicas y experimentales para entender algunos de los estudios que han ayudado a que la Biología de sistemas y la Biología sintética se conviertan en remarcables áreas interdisciplinarias. De la mano se pretende dar una introducción al nuevo campo de la nanotecnología basada en ADN y como este puede ser usado como material de construcción a nano escala y el uso potencial como sistemas biomiméticos, en diagnostico y aplicaciones como agentes terapéuticos.

Biología a través de los números Introduction to Physical Biology. We will study Statistical Mechanics and its application to understand biology from a different perspective. The idea is to show Bio-focused students how math and physics can give us new insights into Biology, and show Physics-focused students the fascinating challenges that modern biology faces nowadays. The club includes introduction to Probability and its distribution, introduction to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, application of stat. mech. diverse biology problems, and if possible intro to basic image analysis in order to test and quantify several experimental results.

La ciencia y la ingeniería juegan un papel sumamente importante para adaptar eficientemente los recursos naturales y materiales para elaborar productos y servicios que garanticen una operación limpia, económica y tecnológica de la vida cotidiana. En este club discutiremos diferentes ecotécnias como huertos urbanos, calentadores solares, celdas solares, la cosecha de agua de lluvia, el uso de impermeabilizantes naturales o de los reciclados de llantas y los participantes construirán recolectores de agua de lluvia para sus escuelas o casas siguiendo el modelo de Isla Urbana (http://www.islaurbana.org/) que fue reconocido como de las tecnologías más inovadores por el Instutito Tecnológico de Massachusetts. Discutiremos artículos de revistas internacionales, veremos videos y habrá discusiones y presentaciones alrededor de estos temas.

Simulando la formación de la estructura en el universo This Club de Ciencias will have three main goals: (1) getting students to learn the fundamental physical concepts and numerical techniques used in numerical simulations of structure formation in the Universe, (2) running a cosmological N-body simulation by making use of the academic code Gadget-2 on a large-scale parallel computing environment, and (3) analyzing and visualizing the output of the simulation, comparing the main features with well established results from the literature.

Neurobiología: Visualizando como piensa un gusano Teoría y práctica sobre conceptos básicos de neurobiología, de la sinapsis al núcleo y comunicación neuronal.En este taller vamos a aprender principios básicos de neurobiología, y vamos a tratar de encontrar respuestas a preguntas relacionadas con comunicación neuronal. Visualizaremos las neuronas de un gusano y discutiremos como crear un reportero de actividad neuronal.

Descubriendo la diversidad microbiana

En este curso se buscará enseñar a los alumnos a descubrir, cultivar y aislar diversos microorganismos que llevan acabo diferentes transformaciones químicas. Dada la disponibilidad de secuencias en las bases de datos, en paralelo, también se harán análisis moleculares y computacionales relevantes para el estudio dichos microorganismos. La meta principal será proveer a los alumnos con herramientas básicas para el estudio de la diversidad microbiana y cómo estas técnicas pueden ser aplicables a diferentes problemas ambientales.

Moléculas que han cambiado el mundo: Síntesis de productos naturales (ENGLISH) This workshop will introduce a series of molecules that have influenced various aspects of modern life, ranging from common drugs and vitamins (e.g., aspirin and vitamin C) to poisons, such as aconitine. Discussions will cover initial discoveries related to the molecules, structural features of the molecules, and chemical synthesis. Emphasis will be placed on the synthesis of naturally occurring molecules (natural product synthesis). Physical samples of the natural sources of certain molecules will be presented, as possible.

Interrogando al muerto, métodos paleogenómicos. What is genomics? How is it changing the world around us? What is paleogenomics? Why is it so important? And why in particular in places like Mexico? We’ll learn about the incredible technological developments that have allowed the emergence of the genomics field. We’ll learn about the field of ancient DNA and how the genomic revolution gave rise to the field of paleogenomics. We’ll see the incredible contributions that paleogenomics research has made to our understanding of what means to be humans. E.g: Our extreme friendliness with archaic relatives, how have we moved around the world in the last 100k years and how we have adapted to so many different conditions.

Física contemporanea While this course intends to cover Mechanics, Wave, Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, It will be focused on teaching students these topics in meaningful depth for a particular problem rather than trying to superficially cover it all. There will be lectures (1-2 hrs), laboratory (3-4 hrs) and a final presentation (last day) based on theoretical research (paper) or experimental project. This approach requires students to learn lots of scientific process skills and scientific communication skills that greatly benefits students’ scientific literacy and scientific thinking.

We will talk about some of the techniques in tissue engineering, such as 3D printing, tissue grafts and decellularizations. We will show a decellularization process and how is done and how is used nowadays in the tissue engineering field. If the audience is more from the biological or mathematical field, We will show them how important can the mathematical models be in biology. We will show some simulations in cancer modeling that can describe and predict some features of the the tumor growth.

Nano: El potencial de las cosas pequeñas We will discuss multiple possible applications for nanotechnology. We will give a general introduction of nanoscience and its applications (in medicine, energy, environment, etc). We will do this through lectures that end up in discussions, and maybe one or two hands-on sessions.

Secuenciando genomas para identificar mutaciones. El bueno, el malo y el feo. “Hands on” workshop to compare the advantages and disadvantages in using classical techniques (mutant hunt) vs using modern techniques (sequencing genomes) to identify the mutation responsible to allow growth of a strain. We will use Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 as a model of study. M. extorquens is a methylotrophic bacteria (ubiquitous in nature and non-pathogenic). I have the sequence of 7 independent mutants that we will analyze during the workshop and we will do the mutant hunt during that week to link a Tn10. Once back in the lab I will amplify the Tn10 sequence and compare results.

Neurocucaracha: Sinapsis, redes neuronales y los sentimientos de una cucaracha (ENGLISH) Seeing, hearing, moving, feeling, thinking: all these phenomena are somehow produced by the brain, the most complex system known in the universe. The Neurocucaracha workshop will look at the circuits of the brain, and the ways with which they encode and process information. We will discuss some great new experiments of the last two years, and perform some experiments of our own. Using mini portable microscopes and electrophysiology equipment that hooks up to smart phones, we will do some field work, to record the feelings of, and maybe even communicate with the roaches of Guanajuato.

Encontrando historias entre los datos Este club es un curso introductorio a python, webscraping, machine learning y visualizacion de datos. La idea es usar estas herramientas para buscar significado detrás de los datos. Estaremos usando ejemplos tipicos dentro de la literatura y también datos que extraemos el primer dia de páginas de internet en México, la idea es utilizar varias herramientas para ver si podemos encontrar algun historia en ellos. Muchas veces nuestros datos son gigantescos, humanamente imposibles de comprender, para ellos utilizaremos Machine Learning, entrenaremos un programa de computadora para sacar la información relevante.

In this Club we will integrate two areas of physics and biology that go hand in hand. Microscopy and Cell Biology are brought together in most modern research, furthermore it is needed that researchers understand how a microscope works, how to modify it, its limitations as well as the various applied problems in Biology in which different types of microscopy can be used. Building upon prepared reading on basic optics, microscopy and the Luria Delbruck experiments we seek to make EVERY student in this club use and build a light microscope of their choosing . By making use of a novel microscope origami technique (Foldscope, Cybulski et al 2014, http:// arxiv.org/abs/1403.1211). This Club seeks both future Biologists and Microscopists interested in an integrative approach to these fields!..

The idea will be begin with the formation of the universe and the elements; from there we will continue to the formation of the solar system and the Earth. The main purpose of the workshop will be to follow the reasoning used to derive the composition of the Earth core without seeing it based in composition from the Earth crust, mantle and meteorites.

Abstraer para aplicar: una mirada a la teoría de grupos Integer addition and substraction are vital operations that we use everyday. Groups are mathematical objects that arise as an abstraction of these operations. This is, we forget about the specific objects and operations, and focus on the properties that they satisfy. Amazingly, this abstraction has a great deal of applications. The workshop that I intend is a series of short lectures on group theory combined with team projects, and is mainly focused on applications. These include music, coding, cryptography, arts, games, and chemistry.

Robótica en biología cuantitativa (ENGLISH) Animal behavior is an old and amusing branch of biology. In the past, the quantification of the results was hard, and was heavily based on human descriptive observations. Modern automation and robotics techniques, as well as advanced mathematical modeling had reshaped the field a lot. In this work shop, students will learn to build real-time image-based tracking devices to film the behavior of C. elegance and fruit fly, which involves fast image analysis, a touch of the control theory and robotics, and then to use mathematical language to quantify the behavior objectively from the recorded images. This workshop will demonstrate how engineering techniques and mathematical tools are used in modern biology. The borders between scientific fields are rather blurred.
