Dear Supporters, Dear Club Members, Dear Friends of the Club Alpbach Salzburg,
Our club can now reflect on twelve years of providing enthusiastic and curious individuals with the opportunity to participate in the European Forum Alpbach as scholarship recipients. The solid groundwork laid in previous years, both by the preceding club boards and the overarching Forum Alpbach Network Board (FANB), has allowed us to contribute actively and meaningfully to our core thematic areas in Salzburg and beyond our regional borders. This year, we continued to build on this stable and supportive foundation, actively shaping events through various conceptual frameworks, both locally and at the Forum itself.
The 2022/23 club year was shaped by our annual theme, „Arts & Visions,“ and a commitment to inclusion and diversity. We made concerted efforts to further develop and integrate the skills and structures necessary for these initiatives, breaking down barriers not only in different event formats but also within our organizational structure itself. We are delighted to report significant achievements in both areas –art and inclusion – through collaborative efforts within our club and with various network partners.
A special acknowledgment goes to our sponsoring organizations, whose support made the realization of our annual and
scholarship programs possible. One notable highlight this year, made possible in its form by our supporters, was hosting the Forum Alpbach Network Autumn Conference. As the hosting club, we welcomed over 80 international network and forum members to Salzburg in the fall, working together for a weekend on the realization of the future visions of the Forum Alpbach Network. On behalf of all club members, our alumni, and the entire board, I express heartfelt gratitude for your trust in our work and your support!
We invite you to explore a glimpse of what it means to experience the Spirit of Alpbach on the upcoming pages, showcasing what our scholarship recipients and alumni encountered in the past club year. These pages serve as a window into the experiences, forged connections and friendships, and firsthand reports of the past club year.
On behalf of the board 2022/23,
Eva-Maria Schitter

CLUB YEAR 2022/23
ONBOARDING ..
With full motivation, the board of 2021/22 together with the new board-to-be started the new club year on a splendid sunny autumn day in November - some getting ready for new challenges, others handing over the knowledge they gathered in their previous board year(s). Which better way to start such an important day than with a competitive game of Ninja in the crisp air on the rooftop of Salzburg‘s Uni Campus.
After some movement and a lot of laughs, we started our preparation for the new club year - which theme will we focus on this year? Which events will we organise this year? (Disclaimer: you can read a lot on that on the next pages!) How do we want to organise our board and extended board? We found our annual theme (Arts & Visions!!) and some ideas and answers for the rest of the questions - ready for the General assembly and the year ahead!
.. & MID-YEAR WORKING SESSION
Admittedly, in March at our mid-year working session, we were occasionally distracted by a deer family. Other than that, our Board and Extended Board working session was a long, successful day. The Extended Board not only supports the Executive Board with work during the year, a meeting with them is also intended to bring the whole team up to date. Focused on the application phase. Susanne and her team have updated and adapted our application criteria (new creative tasks included) and - in addition to their CV - a range of new essay topics:
- Nuclear power in the 21st century
- Obligation vs. right to vote
- Cultural appropriation vs. cultural appreciation
- Wealth tax
WEIHNACHTSFEIER
CHRISTMAS PARTY
Like Christmas, our club’s Christmas party must be celebrated every year! This time, it took place on the 3rd of December at Gasthof Krimpelstätter. A bunch of our CAS-alumni, as well as some international guest first got together outside. There, we enjoyed some punch, mulled wine, and chestnuts without Covid-restrictions, but with tons of inspiring discussions and the joy of seeing each other again. We were accompanied by a brass band, which tunes put us in a Christmassy mood, despite it being only early December. After that, a comfortably warm restaurant awaited us – unlike last year, which was met with great approval by us – where we could warm up and enjoy dinner together. While relishing traditional Salzburg specialties, the conversations that had been started outside were continued: we made CAS-skiday-plans, discussed the upcoming Krampus runs and bonded over the pre-Christmas stress that was all too familiar to all of us. After this successful Christmas party where we met new and well-known faces, we are all looking forward to the EFA 2023 – but more importantly: the next Christmas party!

PUNCH STALL
One could already consider our punch serving with Hilfswerk Wien as a small tradition. For a whole day, Club Alpbach Salzburg members and alumni serve punch for a good cause. All proceeds go to the Hilfswerk Wien.
The punch stall has been organised the last three years in Vienna. As many members of the Alpbach network live in Vienna, it is of course a particularly good opportunity to get together with lots of familiar faces for a punch before Christmas.
The participation of Siggi Fink, a well-known ORF presenter, at the punch serving before Christmas 2022 was particular ly pleasing. He was helping to pro mote the Hilfswerk punch stand and we were even lucky enough to have him at the stand himself that evening, greeting guests with his cheerful and charming manner.
Last year, our friends from Club Alpbach Tirol and IG Wien also announced that they would be supporting us at the punch stall. More clubs, more help, more punch, more visitors and therefore more income for Hilfs werk Wien.
We would like to thank Hilfswerk Wien and are already looking forward to serving more punch and bring even more people next year!
PUNSCH-STAND

MUSEUM VISIT SAMUEL FOSSO
In line with this year’s CAS topic “Arts & Visions“, we visited a photo exhibition by Samuel Fosso, one of the most renowned, contemporary photographic artists of Africa, at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. During a guided tour, we became acquainted with Samuel Fosso’s life and work. Born in Cameroon, Samuel Fosso had to flee his home country due to the Nigerian Civil War at a young age and grew up in the Central African Republic. In Bangui, he opened his first photography studio, aged thirteen. Early on, he experiments with studio photography and self-portraits. It was surprising that except for one wall at the museum, every photograph that we got to see showed the artist himself, for example as an African American or a liberated woman of the 70s, “The Chief (He who sold Africa to the Colonists)“, a bourgeois woman in the 90s, a healer, a replica of Martin Luther King Jr., an emperor of Africa or the first black Pope. Moving from
cal self-portraits and his deliberate play with and juxtaposition of cultures, characters, and identities.
Samuel Fos so’s photographs address a variety of socially and politically relevant topics, such as postcolonialism, globalisation, gender and identity, reli gion, and Africa’s relationships with the East and the West. Thank you to the CAS for sponsoring and the Salzburg Museum for offering the fascinating, guided tour!

FIRESIDE CHAT CAS-ALUMNUS STEPHAN SCHWEIGHOFER
In June twe organised a fireside chat with Alumnus Stephan Schweighofer in bright sunshine in the Volksgarten Salzburg under the motto „BYOPB“ (Bring Your Own Picnic Blanket). Democracy and society were the focus of this talk.
Stephan is currently working intensively on his dissertation in the field of teacher training with a focus on citizenship education and participation. In this context, he has also laun-
ged those present to take advantage of the opportunities that arise in life and to find their own path in the world.
During the alumni fireside chat, there was an intense discussion about democracy and democracy education. Stephan shared his vision of what citizenship could look like in the 21st century, emphasizing the necessary framework conditions, skills and strategies. Special attention was also paid to how students can actively shape the society of the 21st century. Stephan has dedicated his dissertation to this from a research perspective. His doctoral project uses innovative methods to enable pupils to actively participate in research. „While scientific standards need to be respected, the university ivory tower should be opened up through participation,“ says Stephan.
Overall, the alumni fireside chat was not only an informative event, but also an opportunity to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives in a relaxed atmosphere. The mix of inspiring conversations, the picturesque backdrop of the Volksgarten and the pleasant weather made the evening a successful event for all participants.

The panelists gave examples of Austria‘s (failed)endeavours to colonize territories in West Africa and how Austria still profited from Europe‘s colonial history.
Both panelists also work in projects on decolonization.
SPRING EVENT: PANEL DISCUSSION BLIND SPOT: COLONIALISM IN AUSTRIA
On April 27, the Club Alpbach Salzburg in cooperation with the Initiativgruppe Alpbach Wien organized the panel discussion „BLIND SPOT: Colonialism and Austria. Yesterday and today.“
Two renowned historians enriched the event: freelance journalist Vannessa Spanbauer has written articles for Kurier, ORF and Standard and was the former editorin-chief of the magazine „fresh - Black Austrian Lifestyle“ as well as a member of the editorial board of the feminist magazine an.schläge. University professor Amadou Lamine Sarr teaches at the Institute for History and International Development in Vienna and specializes in research areas such as colonialism, decolonization, neo-colonialism, global history and nationalism. The event was moderated by our Alumna Maria Anwar.
On this evening, numerous people from the Alpbach Community and beyond gathered at the „Sneak In“ in Vienna. The interest in this topic and the speakers was visibly great. Thus, an exciting event could begin and the president of the FANB, Jenni Maria Zeller, welcomed the participants.
The discussion dealt with questions such as: Is colonialism really a thing of the past? How do colonial/imperial thought patterns still shape society today? And what ways of deconstruction are possible?
The extent to which the capitalist system and the prosperity of the global North is based on the exploitation of the global South and neo-colonial structures was also discussed. The discussion also focused on the possibilities of creating the necessary awareness of these issues in Austrian society. In the course of this, the media was highlighted as an important area and measures were discussed.
In addition to the media, the education sector was emphasized as an area that must be a place for coming to terms with Austrian colonial history. Both speakers are involved in the AEWTASS (Advancing equality within the AUustrian School System) project and shared their experiences. Sarr is responsible for creating teaching materials on „(Re)Imagining Africa“, while Spanbauer takes part in workshops on „(Re)Telling Stories“. The aim of this innovative and practice-oriented educational program is to promote a more equitable and nondiscriminatory representation of people of African descent and the African continent in the Austrian education system.
In summary, the evening discussed Austria‘s role in colonialism, our current imperial way of life and the still prevalent colonial mindset. The main focus was on discussing ways of deconstruction, overcoming the Eurocentric perspecti ve and creating awareness of this „blind spot“.

SPRING CONFERENCE FORUM ALPBACH NETWORK
DEBELI RTIC, SLOVENIA
Thursday‘s night train from Vienna to Trieste was filled with FAN (Forum Alpbach Network) members. How better could we start a weekend full of preparations and planning for the coming Forum Alpbach. A breakfast in Trieste and boat ride to the Slovenian border (and maybe a few small hiccups to reach our final destination in Debeli Rtic) - and we were set to go!
We dedicated our bi-annually meeting of around 30 Austrian and international clubs and initiative groups to multiple breakout sessions, workshops and discussions on our strategic focus areas for the EFA coming up and following months. Thematically, we put our mind to working out new communication and social media strategies, the baseline agreement between the forum and the network or new initiatives to raise awareness on inclusivity and diversity.
In the breaks and evenings we could catch up with colleagues and friends from around the globe, which is always really special as often times we don‘t see each other throughout the year outside of the EFA and FAN conferences.
The fresh breeze of the sea and beautiful vineyards and landscapes around us really were a beautiful surrounding to (re-)connect and plan. Thank you to Club Alpbach Senza Confini for hosting us and organising this conference!

EUROPEAN FORUM ALPBACH 2023
Meet our scholarship holders
Alpbach could definitely be the much better format of Big Brother. The fruitful discussions, ideas and conversations that take place only within the walls of our Sonnenhof alone would be worthy of a TV series on it´s own.
Late-night conversations and delicious cooking sessions end in deep friendships - which usually last far beyond the 2 weeks in Alpbach. With over 70 applications, it is not easy to select just a handful of motivated young adults. However, we made the right choice for sure and took some wonderful personalities with us to Alpbach again.
Alex immediately stood out with his enthusiasm for international politics. He organised a Fireside Chat with Colonel Markus Reisner of the Austrian Army from scratch.
Stephanie brought excitement to all areas and although she is studying European Union Studies, she was open to discuss on technology and beyond.
Rabin had us all amazed with his knowledge about space.
Kiyesola participated (just like Rabin) in the 24 hrsInnovation Marathon where they had to develop innovative solutions for real-life challenges with no real sleep with complete strangers.
Martina fuelled every discussion with cri tical questions and might have managed to make one or the other white man reflect on privileges.
Benjamin immediately won the hearts of the entire CAS with his open and caring nature. His background in the arts was an enrichment for many and a wonderful addition for the EFA.
Annika‘s profound knowledge of law was particularly noticeable, especially during the Fireside Chat with justice minister Alma Zadic.
Lorenz and Emil were particularly responsible for the team spirit in the club: they cooked Goulash for everyone in the eve ning and even organised fireside chats with Julia, the bartender at one of Alpbach‘s most beloved places - Jakober.
Katharina never seemed to be tired. You could meet her on the mountain, at every panel discussion and lecture and even late at Jakober.
Our younggun Felix was also known as „the youngest but most mature“ and perfectly complemented the group with his broad knowledge and never-ending curiosity.
Nuran was tirelessly present at almost every event and the CAS can only wish to have such an empathetic person every year.
Moritz stood out above all with his critical and committed manner. After a somewhat questio nable speech by the EFA President, he promptly organized a discussion in the context of „Food for thoughts“.
But now enough of our words about our great „Stips“, here is the EFA Recap from their point of view.
SEMINAR WEEK FIRST WEEK IN ALPBACH
I‘ll be honest. I don‘t have much knowledge about technology. However, my motto during the European Forum Alpbach was to step out of my comfort zone. That‘s precisely why I attended the seminar titled „Europe‘s Struggle for Technological Sovereignty and Prosperity“.
Stepping out of one‘s comfort zone is not always easy, and the first day of this semi nar reminded me of that fact. We had a lot of information to absorb, and we were confronted with the reality that the European Union is lagging behind in innovative technologies. Personally, it was alarming to contemplate the risks associated with new technologies, including fake news and assump tions, health risks, cyberattacks, and ethical dilem mas. Throughout history, people have often been threatened by new technology; therefore, the fact that we are again confronted with this is not new.
- STEPHANIE HAUSER
„In the beginning, especially during the semi nar days, I felt a bit like an so called imposter as an art student and was rather hesitant to ask questions or add anything. I also simply lacked the practice of expressing myself clearly and not in overly convolu ted sentences. There was even a moment on the first day when the whole seminar group had to argue against the previous speaker on the US vs. China topic for 30 seconds in a row and I was the only one who was absolutely speechless and only uttered an „ummmm“ (for 30 seconds!!). The others, on the other hand, were just gushing out. So it was even nicer that on the last day of the seminar there was a final discussion in which we had to argue against each other again and I was at least able to participate in the discussion confidently and actively. Talking to each other takes practice and if you get it right, Alpbach is exactly the right place for it!.“
- BENJAMIN LAABMAYER
„The diversity among our group was yet another of my favourite aspects of the seminar. It included entrepreneurs, academics, researchers, activists, engineers and even some high school students. With so many different perspectives, we were able to quickly correct ideas that were factually wrong, but also gain much understanding about the complexity of some of the challenges the EU is facing. Outside of the seminar, talking to these people was also a fantastic experience, as everyone had his or her own intriguing story to tell.“

A DAY IN ALPBACH
Like every morning in this picturesque place, it still feels a bit too early for me to fully embrace the new day. It‘s not because the sun hasn‘t risen yet; in fact, the opposite is true. The beautiful Austrian Alps surrounding our cozy accommodation, „Pension Sonnenhof“ (a fitting name indeed), are already bathed in a soft golden hue. However, I find myself once again fighting off sleepiness and, to be completely honest, nursing a mild headache. As is the case every morning here, I had promised myself the night before that I would retire earlier, but how could I, knowing that I would miss out on extraordinary encounters with some of the world‘s brightest minds?
As the official events wind down and the stars start to appear in the darkening sky, the incredible experiences only continue. Some might even argue that this is when Alpbach truly comes to life. Nevertheless, regardless of whether I‘m sleep-deprived or not, nothing could keep me confined to my bed, as the anticipation of a day filled with enlightening moments courses through every fiber of my being
It‘s one of the final days before this remar kable „European Forum Alpbach“ comes to an end, and I still find it hard to grasp the outstanding opportunities I‘ve been granted and the incredi ble things that have transpired. Over the past two weeks, this char ming village has undergone a remarkable transformation into an unparalleled hub for intellectual growth. This year‘s focal points include climate, democracy, security, and finance.
The initial phase, known as the „Seminar Weeks,“ offered us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a rich tapestry of morning and evening seminars, each covering a diverse range of subjects. Personally, I chose two seminars: one that delved into multilateralism and international cooperation (theory-oriented), and the other focused on developing negotiation skills (practice-oriented), a crucial skill set in today‘s interconnected and polarized world.
Both were incredibly relevant in the face of the multifaceted global challenges that confront our species. These seminars were led by the foremost experts in their respective fields.
School
Following this phase, the second week unfolded with an even more diverse array of activities: workshops, panel discussions, receptions, hikes, fireside chats, film viewings, group activities, and sometimes even parties. All of these events contributed to a lingering fear of missing out on something extraordinary, as most of them occurred simultaneously.
Even during the much-needed breaks (though they could hardly be called that), passionate discussions persisted. These conversations were enriched not only by the presence of experts but also by the diverse backgrounds of the young participants, spanning art, social sciences, natural sciences, and hailing from different parts of the world. Without exaggeration, opportunities for enlightening discussions seemed to be around every corner.
To provide just a few examples: During a lunch break while savoring a delicious Pizza Salami, I had the pleasure of meeting Arancha González, the third Dean of the Paris
of International Affairs at Sciences Po. When going out for a drink, I crossed paths with Cédric Villani, a multi-award-winning mathematical physicist/ mathematician, and discussed the nature of reality and the meaning of life with him in front of Erwin Schrödinger‘s grave – which is located in the heart of Alpbach. On another occasion, I had the privilege of meeting Manfred Nowak, an Austrian human rights lawyer who served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture. Each encounter not only enriched me with their profound knowledge but also offered me the chance to connect with them on a deeply human level, as they were genuinely interested in getting to know us on an eyeto-eye level.
As I prepare for the day and gaze into the mirror, a smile brightens my weary face. Today brings the long-awaited FiresideChat with Colonel Markus Reisner, something I‘ve been eagerly anticipating over the past few days. In Alpbach, sleep might be a rarity, but the overflowing joy more than makes up for it.
- ALEXANDER HELPFERER
FIRESIDE CHATS
„One of the highlights of the European Forum Alpbach 2023 was the thought-provoking fireside chat featuring Austria‘s Minister of Justice, Alma Zadić. A central theme addressed during the fireside chat was the issue of legal inequality and the imperative need for legal aid reform to rectify disparities in accessing justice. Mrs. Zadić firmly expressed her dedication to advancing measures aimed at promoting fairness within legal processes. Another significant aspect of the discussion revolved around fortifying institutions responsible for preserving evidence in cases involving sexual harass ment. The fireside chat also delved into the realm of legal technology (Legal Tech), examining the potential benefits and challenges associated with adopting technological advancements in the justice sys tem. Moreover, the chat touched upon various topics, inclu ding Austrian abortion regulations, asylum rights and the Whistleblower Directive.
Towards the session‘s conclusion, Alma Zadić sha red insightful reflections on her career. She highlight ed the importance of staying open to opportunities that arise during one‘s career journey, rather than having everything meticulously planned
phy with the memorable quote, „Follow the flow, don‘t make plans.“

The exhibition in Alpbach was important to attract attention and one exhibit in particular, an UNHCR refugee tent, was especially interesting for me. For many visitors of the EFA it was not seen as an exhibit, but as a cozy place to get together. At the beginning it was considered to put up securities because this tent should actually show somet hing very specific. The place of refuge for people who had to leave almost ever ything behind. With director Adrian Goiginger following a film screening of „Der Fuchs“
versation with Yana Barinova in Alpbach showed me that this was exactly what was important, in addition to all the scientific input. Giving time to thoughts and leaving room for interpretation is something I particularly took away from Alpbach.
Over the two weeks in Alpbach, I had plenty of pleasant moments with colleagues from all over the world. Each of us at the forum came through different walks of life and had our own share of struggles to reach where we are at that moment. So, there were always inspirations to find and motivation to push yourself. There were always new things to learn from fellow participants. So, the European Forum Alpbach, for me was an accumulation of cherished moments of learnings and unlearnings. I gather every participant had more or less similar experience at the forum.
But if I had to choose one moment out of many special moments that I lived at the forum, it would be the 24 hours innovation marathon. Before the event, I was skeptical about it because I was going to work with individuals whom I’ve never met before and come from very different backgrounds than I have, on a very tight deadline (24 hours). As soon as the event started. I was happy and excited to be surrounded by brilliant minds, encouraging
discussions, designing (and a lot of redesigning) and much more. Not to for get the good food, a lot of caffeine and the team building exerci ses in between that kept us awake. Haha, who thought only 3 hours of sleep on an air filled plastic mat tress would be enough to keep you going for the next day? But, it wasn’t just about the end product. I think the overall process of how we enjoyed working as a team, respecting each others’ opinions and coming to a consensus is what made it special.
- RABIN OJHA
Two moments especially stood out to me: One moment happened at the „European Parliament Elections 2024 - How Will Young People Vote?“ Chat-Session. The panelists (three politicians) discussed a lot on how to better reach out to the youth and the importance of discourse with the youth. Within this discussion one of the CAS Scholarship holders was given the voice to ask her questions. First question she asked towards all the people in the room whether they had an academic background. All besides the one asking had, which led to her follow-up question to the panel on how the non-academics can be addressed better as well. One of the panelists was very touched by this situation, pointing out that he was close to tears. The second special experience was the „Unheard Voices: Women’s Rights, Displacement & the European Failure“ Chat session, where a photographer told his story of giving photography lessons in a refugee camp in Greece. This was most probably the only presentation I’ve seen, that really fitted the this years forum´s topic “Bold Europe”. Without any filter, he told us how he experienced, how refugees are treated by the EU. How human rights are violated, how companies and associations make profit from this and those who are suffering are the refugees. It was a presentation, that really got you thinking, „Is this the European Union I want to live in?.
- MORITZ KUBESCH
„I was shocked at the caliber of people at the Forum Alpbach and their willingness to share their ideas, as well as listen to input from others. Alpbach was like that, a platform for every voice that wanted to be heard, you just need to be courageous enough to speak out.“

SONNENHOF GSTANZL BATTLE
On one particular day during the two weeks in Alpbach, the beautiful Blumental valley is resounding with the roaring noise from the Zotteralm at 1200 metres above sea level. MY ALPBACH EXPERIENCE
Woke up. Tired. The day before was exhaustingly beautiful (or beautifully exhausting?).
No time for breakfast, straight to the seminar centre. Still tired. Chose a seminar with the very performative title “from what if to what next” by some guy named Rob Hopkins. What I didn’t know at the time was, that the seminar would lead me to quit my job and step into a future, full of uncertainty, full of possibilities.
The seminar started and everybody was given a potato and a wooden skewer. “Find a group”, Rob Hopkins said “and stick together your potatoes to form an animal incorporating anything you can find in and around the seminar centre. Think of what the animals mating cry and its diet might be.” So we did. What came from it were enchanting creatures that chanted in choirs and Dragon cries, that fed on plastic and
dane everydayness into something bigger, something more exciting and something more sustainable.
After, overflowing with inspiration (and having my fresh copy of Rob Hopkins’ book signed) I went back to the apartment where the next event was just around the corner. A fireside chat with Austria’s leading climate attorney and a senior policy officer for gender equality and economic transition. After, they, invited us to join them to a panel discussion about the green tran sition of financial markets. The catch: the discussion was led by Blackrock, Deutsche Börse Ag and the
likes. Thankfully Greenpeace was able to sneak Indy Johar onto the stage – one of the most impactful people ACTUALLY advocating and driving sustainable transitions. On stage he was fierce, truthful and emotional – earning well-deserved praise by the audience.
Indy Johar was not the only one getting praise that night. After the panel discussion EFAs annual speakers’ night event could boast with inspiring talks. The most applause earned by the audience and jury alike was a speech on the “virtue of doing nothing “. The speaker: my best friend and roommate Jeldrik Schottke.
After his speech: back to the apartment to produce a metric ton of Gulasch for my promised, first Club Alpbach Salzburg Gulasch night. Thankfully two amazing scholarship holders helped me in getting this thing on the stove. Of course, after the achievement, the day had to end in Jakober, the local pub. And of course, after the pub closed, the night had to go on with a jam session with my newly won but dearly loved Club Alpbach Salzburg friends until the early morning hours. For another day to end exhaustingly beautiful (or beautifully exhausting).

FIRESIDE CHAT WITH JULIA
here is one place in Alpbach that every scholarship holder at the Forum visits at least once – many quite more often. This place is characterized by one person that every one of those visitors meet. Her Name is Julia Szuchowszky and she has been the head bartender in Jakober for more than seven consecutive years. We, the Club Alpbach Salzburg, had the opportunity and pleasure of hosting a fireside chat with this rather famous but often underappreciated person, central to the Forum.
Herself an apprentice, who took upon taking the A-Levels at a later stage in life is as of 2023 almost finished with her masters. That‘s why we also discussed somewhat Alpbach-atypical educational paths and approaches with her. As some of us didn‘t aim to study straight after our A-levels, we had different opinions about education. As an educationalist, Julia was of course the best discussion partner.
„But Julia, why do you come here behind the bar once a year?“
„I like the people and I also just want to work a bit in the industry“ What a pure statement
from a relentless power woman.
She stands up for including more people with nonacademic background in the Forum, as she is a tea cher in a vocational school outside of Alpbach. Apart of talking with her about how to make the EFA a more inclusive space we brainstormed about how to make Jakober and night life in general during the two weeks a safer space for all. In addition to our club, the Tyroleans, Viennese and Upper Austrians
And I think for all of us it was the cosy atmosphere, the fact that Julia has such unique insights and background knowledge of the forum participants and of course her long experience at the forum that made the Fireside Chat something unique for all of us.
Of course, Julia was also open to some fun questions about her many Tattoos or the origin story of Jaquatulli (a special drink for special occasions..
Alpbach people you know what we are talking about). Be sure to strike up a conversation with her when time allowsyou learn a thing or two about the forum itself and if lucky enough enjoy a Jakober Spritzer with her. Dear Julia thank you for being part of this forum every year and for dealing with all of us every night- we can not wait so see you next year again!

THE SPIRIT OF ALPBACH WHAT ALPBACH MEANS
TO ME
„My „Alpbach moment“ unfolded during my creative writing seminar. On the very first day, our instructor encouraged us to close our eyes, transport ourselves to a moment of sheer happiness, and then, with pen in hand, meticulously recount it in our notebooks. Later, we were tasked with sharing these deeply personal narratives with a room full of strangers. This exercise not only ignited our creativity but also forged deep connections among us. It vividly showcased the power of meaningful conversations and the sense of community Alpbach fosters.“
-ANNIKA LINDER
„In Alpbach I got to meet some of the most inspiring individuals who really want to make a difference in the world through their works. And I am not exaggerating when I say that Alpbach made me more optimistic about the roles of our generations in making the world a better place.“
- RABIN OJHA
„The forum fits, very much the location, as both are a bit superficial. Shining from the outside but if you take a closer look, sometimes there is not much behind the facade. Neither the less, the experience with all the people you meet there is very enriching, and you can feel that the forum itself, has a huge potential, which has not unfolded completely yet. But still, with all the people I met there, who told me what already changed, and how they have the courage to keep on pushing, to change the forum for the better, I am sure, that maybe not in the next, but in a couple of years, the forum will be a way more enriching experience. A place where critical discussions and discourses not only off-stage but also on-stage happen.“
- MORITZ KUBESCH
Alpbach holds a special place in my heart, and it represents a unique blend of experiences and emotions that have left an indelible mark on me. In Alpbach had the privilege of gaining knowledge from experts in various fields, broadening my horizont, and deepening my understanding of the world. Alpbach is a place where cultures, ideas, and perspectives converge. The exchange of thoughts and experiences among people from diverse backgrounds is a hallmark of this remarkable gathering. Alpbach has been instrumental in boosting my self-confidence. Engaging in discussions, presenting ideas, and networking with professionals and peers has helped me grow personally and professionally.
- NURAN DORFSCHMID
„Alpbach represents a kaleidoscope of global ideas and a unique opportunity to blend the beauty of the Austrian Alps with the brilliance of diverse minds.“
- KATHARINA PRITZ
„During one Alpbach chat audience members suddenly stood up to explain their own ideas on a blackboard, with Austria’s climate minister Leonore Gewessler listening carefully. Witnessing this kind of direct participation and democracy, I felt a new sense of responsibility to do my part in solving the problems our society faces today”
„Alpbach is a place thriving with thou sands of small worlds getting created each day. Be it a conversation, a lecture, a laugh. All vastly different from each other but beautiful in every way..“

Preparing Bauernkrapfen for the International Bazaar.
Another absolute highlight was the international bazaar, where each country- and we had in total 84 nationalities- represented at the EFA offered a small culinary delicacy from their homes. Spice tasting from Uganda, Serrano from Spain or Ma‘moul from Lebanon. What can Salzburg offer? Eva our president and scholarship holder Martina from Salzburg, started already early in the morning shaping and frying “Bauernkrapfen”. Conclusion: „Gehn weg wie woame Semmerl“. A wonderful opportunity for the international parti cipants to bring a piece of their culture to Alpbach. And also for our scholarship holders to network with other young and motivated people from all over the world.
This year, the seminar week was dedicated to the over 400 scholarship holders, as the traditional conference programme was not due to start until the second week of the EFA. In addition to two daily semi nars, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, we wanted to offer our „Stips“ even more program. Whether it was the obligatory hike to the Gratlspitz at 4 a.m., a jam session with wonderful talents, a film screening on the topic of racism or speed friending with other Austrian and internatio nal clubs: there was definitely no chance for boredom.

COMING BACK TO ALPBACH RETURNER‘S EXPERIENCE
My first year at the European Forum Alpbach (EFA) in 2022 was remarkable. It proved to be the greatest challenge I had ever taken up yet the most enjoyable and fulfilling. However, what was clear was I had a lot on my plate to consume everything accordingly. 2023 gave me a chance to dig deeper into my experience. The privilege to choose when to go and what to focus on gave me the opportunity to contextually process and consume the knowledge from the labs. In addition to this, I had much more time to have fruitful, fun and exploratory conversations with my fellow participants.
This year also allowed me to establish and further my connections from the previous year into friendships, I believe I can count on these for many years to come. 2022 showed me how everyone at EFA was great at what they do and 2023 allowed me to connect and have some of the greatness be part of my life for the near and far future. As the saying goes “Show me your friends and I will know who you are” I am proud to have inspiring, brilliant and some of the most intelligent individuals I can now call friends from EFA.
-PROSPER MAGEZA (RETURNER/EXTENDED BOARD)
As a returning participant of the European Forum Alpbach, I can‘t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and inspiration. This unique gathering of minds brings together individuals from so many diverse backgrounds, all driven by a shared passion for a: A Bold Europe.
Alpbach, nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, is a pla ce: where ideas flow like
mountain streams, where dialogues spark like the first light of dawn, and where solutions emerge like the resilience of alpine flora. Amidst the vibrant discussions at the European Forum Alpbach, again, like every year, lasting friendships are born. It is great to gather with EFA Alumni not only in Salzburg, but all around the world.
For me, returning to Alpbach is a reminder that no matter our backgrounds or professions, we share a common purpose - to address the pressing challenges that face our continent and the world. By all the discussions, in panels and fireside chats, it reminds us that progress is achievable, and that together, we can shape a future that‘s brighter and more inclusive for all.

FORUM ALPBACH NETWORK FALL CONFERENCE
The Forum Alpbach Network (FAN), consistent of over 30 international Clubs and initiative groups, as well FAN Board plus representatives of the EFA are meeting twice a year to gather ideas and strategies for the upcoming EFA. The fall conference in 2023 was hosted by us - Club Alpbach Salzburg.
Welcoming participants from all of over Europe and beyond so to speak from Austria, to Somalia to Iraq was something special. Mastermind and main organizer Eva put a lot of effort, work and energy into this only to contract Covid shortly before the event. At least we were able to connect her online via zoom.
Taking place in the Palais Langenhoven, the location of the venue represented old town Salzburg just from its best side. Of course, the international guests were particularly impressed by the charm of the location and the picture-perfect snowfall we had ordered exclusively for them ;-)
As sustainability is important to us as a club and there has been a debate for some time about vergetarian-only food at EFA events, we have also opted for a vegan catering. A huge thank you for the students of Landwirtschaftsschule Klessheim who made us all happy with the delicious, vegan food!
Next to a lot of discussion about vision building for the EFA 24, inputs and ideas about the annual EFA theme tracks (art, climate, finance, democracy and security) to Social Safety, Communication and conversations around vital themes, the attendees delved deep into reflecting on which changes are worth investing time and energy in.
Through city walking tours, Salzburg contemporary art tours, visits at one or the other Christkindlmarkt as well as a very much musical evening program in form of DJ sessions and karaoke the weekend pretty quickly felt like 3 very intense days at the EFA.
With a handful of new friends, ideas but most of all a lot of motivation to sha pe the upcoming EFA and our club we leave this weekend behind.
Thank you at this point again to out sponsors Land Salzburg, Stadt Salzburg, FH Salzburg, Foreus and Salzburg OG for making it possible to bring together over 80 participants.
