WORLD

Well, where do I begin? It’s been a strange time that’s for sure but we are back! Over the 3 month lockdown period we spent our time winding down, appreciating family time and simply enjoying a well deserved break. Of course, we had to have a catch up with a few of our favourite celebs and see what celebrity lockdown life was like. As well as celebrity interviews, you can view skincare routines, exercises, recipes and so much more all on our website. Working on this Summer Issue and connecting with locals made me realise that no matter what has happened, our local community has remained stronger than ever. More people are eating out locally, shopping locally and supporting small businesses like never before! A share, comment or like on Instagram is free and goes a long way. As always, and now more than ever, I love being part of this community and having the platform to be able to raise awareness which ultimately supports local business thrive gives me the ultimate pleasure! I look forward to continuing to do so as we now enter the new normal.

COVER INTERVIEW

Paige

TURLEY Love Island 2020 winner Paige Turley has released her debut single and chances are you already love it. Paige has released ‘Movin’ Too Fast’, a cover of Artful Dodger’s 1999 classic, in collaboration with The House & Garage Orchestra through NewState Music and it’s available to stream and download right now. Paige has been working as a singer and songwriter for several years, performing in pubs and clubs in her native Scotland, and she also competed on Britain’s Got Talent in 2012.

Paige and Finn Tapp, who are now an official couple and recently moved in together, became the first ever winners of the winter version of Love Island in February this year, a series which saw Paige show off her impressive vocals as she performed Robyn S’ classic ‘Show Me Love’ in the villa. We caught up with Paige to talk lockdown, love and lyrics! Hi Paige! How has life out of the villa been for you? It’s been absolutely incredible, I’m so thankful for the support I’ve had from the public. Finn and I now have our own place too which we’re so happy with. I’ve also just released my first track record deal – life is good! You didn’t have such a great start with love in the beginning but then walked in your knight in shining armour! Do you feel like your whole experience changed once Finn had arrived? I definitely felt like my experience changed once Finn entered. Up until then I felt almost like a gooseberry, third wheeling with the rest of the couples in the villa who seemed like they hit it off really quickly. I instantly felt more comfortable and settled into the villa as soon as Finn arrived.

How did you feel when you met each other’s families and finally exchanged phone numbers!? It was a lovely to experience to meet each other’s families outside of the villa as we had spoken so much about them and our home life while we were in there (literally hours and hours of conversations where they mean so much to us both). It was nice to eventually see what we’d been speaking about for ourselves and it definitely brought us closer together. Exchanging phone numbers was comical.. I didn’t have my boyfriend’s phone number! Even when we were texting for the first time it just felt sooo odd but it was great. It’s so great to hear you have moved in together! What did you get up to whilst in quarantine? Finn and I went through fazes of being motivated and fit... and then very lazy phases. We watched a whole lot of Netflix too. We did a lot of walking, cycling and every Friday Zoom bingo was our highlight of the week. What is your favourite way to keep fit? I really enjoy bootcamp/circuit type classes, and doing a mixture of cardio and weights. I take my hat off to people who can run for an hour! I need short goals in order to reach my longer term goal. I have been using an app called Shreddy which provides 10 minute workouts which has been amazing. It works the full body and can be done at home which has been great during lockdown.

I felt almost like a gooseberry, third wheeling with the rest of the couples in the villa. 14 // Close Up Magazine

COVER INTERVIEW

16 // Close Up Magazine

Have you kept in touch with other contestants?

I looooove Stormzy. He is such a talented guy!

Yes, I’ve kept in touch with quite a lot of the contestants. We had such a lovely villa and were so lucky that everyone got on so well. Shaughna of course is my bestie and Soph and I are going to try and meet up in the next couple of weeks. I also recently went for dinner with the other contestants who live in Manchester (Molly, Callum, Jamie, Natalia, Demi and Connor). Congratulations on releasing your brand new single ‘Movin too fast’. How does it feel?

It feels absolutely amazing to be back into music. The initial idea was to release a cover of a song in lockdown on Instagram as at this point there wasn’t the option of going into a studio but the idea snowballed from there. Once it was safe to do so I was in the studio and lucky enough to work with 36 incredible musicians who recorded their part separately. It was really amazing and to have it released on a label is a dream come true. Now lockdown is easing I’m so excited to get into a studio and work on some original stuff! Have you always known garage music is what you wanted to pursue? I’ve always loved listening to dance music however I’ve found myself singing a variety of genres from soul, to pop to dance. I think my original music will sit more in the genre of pop.

What is the ultimate goal for you as an artist? I can’t wait to perform live again! To release an album that I was proud of my friends would class as a “tune” is the ultimate goal – and to then have the opportunity to perform it too. Who would be your dream collaboration?

I looooove stormzy. He is such a talented guy! Are you working on anything exciting like a possible music video? Due to restrictions there won’t be a music video unfortunately but I’m working on new original music which hopefully will be available soon. We also shot a really cool behind the scenes shorter video on the day I was in the studio.

Paige Turley and The House & Garage Orchestra’s ‘Movin’ Too Fast’ is available to stream and download now on Spotify and Apple Music.

INTERVIEW

Q&A on the

STYLE SISTERS If you’ve been spending your spare time organising your home or searching for ideas on creative ways to declutter, meet the duo who have taken the crown for the most desirable closets. Styling duo to the stars, Style Sisters, specialise in the detox, organising and re-styling of your home and wardrobe. Whilst quarantine may have bene holding the girls back from beautifying homes, Gemma and Charlotte have big plans ahead.

When did you realise you had a knack for detoxing homes? We have both, from an early age, would always change our own rooms round as well as friends and family. Neither of us can function if the house is up in the air and have always had a genuine passion for giving everything a home as well as making it look nice! Which celebrity wardrobe has been your favourite to detox? We genuinely couldn’t pick! It sounds so cliché but we absolutely love what we do and the feeling we create with our detoxes! We’ve been so lucky to have had such lovely clients that have gone on to become friends. Which celebrity home would you love to organise? We always say we would love to do Lady Gaga! Can you imagine how fun and interesting that would be and what we would find!

Our longest wardrobe was Vicky Pattison! What work did you do before becoming The Style Sisters? Charlotte was in interior design and Gemma had her own fashion boutiques and was a fashion stylist. Where do you get your inspiration from? We get inspiration from so many places. The line between fashion and interiors is so thin and closely entwined that we often transfer ideas from one to the other. Pinterest, life around us and even Instagram inspire us in so many ways. We often ask our clients to send any photos of rooms/looks they like, then once we have their vibe we can create something fresh tailored to their tastes.

20 // Close Up Magazine

Do you think you will recruit and have a group of Style Sisters? We are absolute perfectionists which is why we haven’t already, but we can definitely see us recruiting “Sisters” in the future. How long and whose wardrobe has taken you the longest to detox? Our longest wardrobe was Vicky Pattison! It took us 12 hours and we drove to Newcastle! Do you have any exciting ventures coming up? We are currently working on some exciting projects, were styling the whole of Danielle Armstrong’s house as well as finishing off the designing of Ferne Mcann’s walk-in-wardrobe and spare room!

Neither of us can function if the house is up in the air. Have you been detoxing your own homes in lock-down? Our homes were pretty organised already but we have definitely been giving everything a once-over. Were both itching to get back to work! We miss doing what we do so much and of course each other!! Can you give us your favourite tips on decluttering? You need to get yourself in the mood! Set aside a day so your mentally prepared! Put some music on and get some snacks (essential ha!). Make a list of all the rooms you wish to tackle and set aside a day for each room, don’t expect to tackle everything in one day, it’s unrealistic and will totally overwhelm you! If the thought of doing a room seems daunting, start small. Start with an area of the room or a drawer! Small steps lead to a bigger picture and as you start ticking things off your list you will feel amazing and it will keep you motivated to do more! If you’re going to do it, you really need to do it, which means getting everything out! Don’t leave no corner left unturned! Give everything a home. If everything is allocated a home, it helps maintain a tidy and organised space. Changing your hangers to slimline velvet hangers makes a massive difference in your wardrobe, they not only give you more space, they keep everything looking super stylish too! Consider storing clothes seasonally if space is limited. Make sure you’re only holding onto items you use and love!

FUN

Professional fashion designer and BBC’s You Are What You Wear stylist Joey Bevan talks all things celebrities and style! Follow celebrity stylist Joey Bevan @joeybevan My current celebrity style during lockdown has got to be Olivia Palermo walking her cute Pooch Mr Butler in New York! I’ve never seen anyone style out a pandemic like this fashion babe. The use of a Silk Scarf to cover up a medical mask is a great way to style out safety. The clash of the prints is perfect too and who doesn’t like a matchy toned boot! Summer 2020 may have been put on hold whilst we wore loungewear and sat in our pants in lockdown, but with restrictions easing off, it’s time to level up the looks. One of my favourite looks this season is broderie anglaise. Designers such as Erdem, Louis Vuitton and Isabel Marant showed us that it’s all about adoring these chic vintage vibes, but still keeping to a comfy and oversized look. Team broderie with Birkenstock’s and Rattan Bag - the idea is to look like Truly Scrumptious from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang doing Sunday brunch with her besties!

Another summer 2020 trend I’m living for right now is 80’s oversized suits teamed with shorts and trainers – it is giving me Sloan Ranger vibes. Channelling Princess Di meets Working Girl. You almost want to look like you’re on your way to a meeting with a new client, so you chucked some trainers on whilst on the go! This look can easily transition from day to night by adding a heel.

We can’t ignore the fact that SS20 was slightly over shadowed by a global pandemic, so another must have look is the mask. Many brands are popping up with their take on this, but I am loving that so many independent creatives are popping up with amazing face coverings too. From matching to mixing, each day we can style our faces with an array of masks available on the high street and beyond. My tips is to have fun - who doesn’t like excuse to add another accessory!

Summer wouldn’t be complete without a pair of sunnies. Sunglasses are probably the most essential piece of your summer wardrobe. With an array of choices out there, it can really get confusing with what to go for. My tip is grab a classic style frame that won’t date and keep to tortoise shell or black, that way it will work with most of the garments in your wardrobe.

INTERVIEW

Sophie

HERMANN Talks all things beauty, fashion and detoxing

Known for her no-nonsense attitude and love for the finer things in life, Sophie Hermann discusses life in lock-down, her go-to workouts and a beauty hack that’s gone straight to the top of our to-do list! How is quarantine life treating you? I’ve been socially distancing for years, so this is not too difficult for me :) Jokes aside, this is now the third week of isolating alone in my London flat and I’m slowly turning into Martha Stewart. Nesting, decorating and ordering everything off Amazon has become my new calling in life. How are you keeping fit during lockdown? Thank god, all my favourite gyms/trainers are doing Zoom sessions now, which is a great aid getting out of the bed and starting the day with a vitalising routine. My workout consists of Pilates with Paola Langella, Boxing with Boxcleversports, BodyBarre with Paola di Lanzo and Yoga with Chris Salton. If I miss any of these, I turn on the down dog yoga app or watch my own workout videos on IG or Youtube, but then listening to your own voice can be agonising sometimes.

I’ve never felt more ready to tackle a pandemic, like Xena warrior princess. Can you give any advice on staying healthy during this “what’s in the fridge” time? Try to overcome your inner “Quaranswine” and swap naughty snacks and meals with healthy alternatives. Such as, quinoa and rice pasta (closest to the real deal), make your own ice lolly sorbets from frozen berries and fill up on lots of self-made soups and stews to get your veggies in. In the end, it’s all about balance and low cortisol levels, so if you pig out, don’t beat yourself up about it. Sometimes it’s good to be bad… You recently underwent a cleanse in Germany, can you tell us a bit about that? It was really the most perfect timing!! I’ve been dreaming about going to Lanserhof forever and couldn’t have imagined a better Corona escape, than being surrounded by a team of the best German medics, healthy bespoke meals and the fresh air of the beautiful Tegernsee lake framed by the Bavarian mountains. I’ve done a total of 2 weeks in there and lost 4kg which for my height is a lot and I’ve never felt more detoxed and ready to tackle a pandemic, like Xena warrior princess, before.

26 // Close Up Magazine

What has been your beauty regime during this time? I’ve been doing self-care Sunday on a daily basis, so lots of face, hair and even foot masks. This is also a great time to invest in lash growing serums (M2 Beauté is my fave), because they usually take a month or so show results. And most importantly I’m wearing no or very little make up at the moment, which is a welcoming change to my usual glam routine for filming. I love all products of Dr.Barbara Sturm and use 3-4 serums plus moisturiser every morning and evening and my skin has never been better. My latest discovery is a self-made face and body scrub from Shanina Shaiks’ profile: • 2 Tsp of ground coffee • 1 1/2 Tsp of brown sugar • 3 Tsp of coconut oil Gently massage it into your skin for a couple of minutes, ideally in the shower, since things are bound to get very messy. Then rinse and apply moisturiser if needed, you’ll end up with the softest most buttery skin! Being a fashion designer, are you glamming up for the living room or dressing down? At home I literally live in lounge wear, kimonos or workout clothes, to motivate myself :) The small joys of life at the moment are glamming up for Zoom meetings and the park. Other than fitness, what else have you been doing to keep busy? I’ve been working on a new fashion and TV project, which is a lot of fun! That’s all I can say for now…

Cucumber

CLOTHING With a simple pull on style, the jumpsuit features an elasticised waist and adjustable ribbon tie for the perfect fit. The jumpsuit encapsulates the brand’s all-in-one style clothing – long lasting, sustainable fabrics designed with the modern woman in mind. These are pieces in which to work, train, sleep, travel and play. All of Cucumber’s carefully chosen fabrics combine the latest perfomance technology and super soft hand feel. They are all anti-crush and thermoregulating with stay-fresh technology. Active volcanic particles are embedded in the fabric of this jumpsuit that use the body’s temperature to remove moisture and keep you at the perfect 37.5°C; they also will trap any odour molecules to keep you smelling fresh. Cucumber’s collections are super easy to take care of and require minimal washing. They advise cold washing only when needed (thermoregulation and the stay-fresh technology means clothes rarely need to be cleaned and dry quickly), hang drying and no ironing. All of which leads to less energy and water consumption. Each collection is designed, sampled, graded, manufactured and warehoused within a five mile radius of the founders’ London homes and orders are sent out via Royal Mail meaning a reduction in car/vans on the road as well as overall pollution.

Every piece of Cucumber is super soft and comfortable to wear whether lounging in bed, dashing to the shops, or planted in front of a screen. Think of them as the essential, life-proof items in your wardrobe that you will go back to time and again. Ribbon Tie Jumpsuit www.cucumberclothing.com £125

BEAUTY

Let’s Talk

MAKE UP ESSENTIALS My top 5 picks by Amanda Anastasiou @amanda_ana From high end to affordable I have discovered a handful of products that I can’t live without, and you shouldn’t be living without either!

1. TOO FACED BORN THIS WAY MULTI-USE SCULPTING CONCEALER Much like the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, the Born This Way Concealer does not skimp on pigment. Even a tiniest amount will provide a very full coverage, making it perfect for covering up everything from dark circles to blemishes. It is also photo friendly and has NO FLASHBACK! Each bottle contains 15ml of product. The price point is up there at £25 but a standard sized concealer is around 7ml so you do get a lot for your money and it lasts for absolutely ages.

2. NYX SUEDE MATT LIP LINER I have tried so many lip liners and to tell you the truth, I sometimes find that the ones on the pricier side aren’t as good as the cheaper ones. The NYX Suede Matt Lip Liner is the best I have used! And with a £4 price tag you just can’t go wrong. Available in a 62-colour range.

3. IT COSMETICS YOUR SKIN BUT BETTER CC+ CREAM Finally, a CC cream that I like! In the past I have tried so many CC or BB creams but they just seem to sit on my skin and only last a few hours. A foundation and a cream in one, the IT Cosmetics CC + cream blends beautifully with your skin whilst offering anti-ageing elements. I would recommend using your hands and applying it like a cream as this warms the product up slightly. I love to use it on a daily basis as it isn’t heavy on my face and provides me with the sun protection I need. The only downside is the colour range is quite small, let’s hope they extend it!

4. MORPHE9T NEUTRAL TERRITORY ARTIST PALETTE There are so many reasons why this palette is in such high demand. Shift into neutral with these knockout nudes that can be mixed and matched. Not only are they super pigmented, the colours are so versatile that you can also use them for contouring. At just £12 it is a fraction of the cost compared to others that are similar and it is on offer at the moment for £8! You can’t go wrong.

5. KIEHLS CREAMY EYE TREATMENT WITH AVOCADO Now this one isn’t a make-up product but it sure does help with make-up application and I just couldn’t have a top 5 picks without including it. For anyone struggling with dry under eyes or makeup sitting into fine lines under the eye, then you must try this product. The unique, concentrated texture is enriched with Avocado to gently moisturise the delicate eye area. It releases a quick-burst of hydration so that when you apply concealer it goes on like a dream with no creasing!

HEALTH

My story &

THE OPPORTUNITY The benefits of becoming an Arbonne consultant and how the products can change your life. I was working in marketing for Hotpod Yoga managing events, brand partnerships, PR and creating social media content. Since the studios were closed due to Covid, my role along with many others form head office was placed on furlough and during this time I started my own business with Arbonne! Alice, a friend of mine was also on furlough from her job in recruitment, she told me about Arbonne and told me I would love it because I’m into nutrition and wellness. As the startup cost was extremely low (£30 to start your own business) I thought – why not! I have all the time in the world and absolutely nothing to lose. Alice said: “Why don’t you try the ’30 days to healthy living programme” and I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t convinced at first. I’ve always known what to put in my body to stay healthy so didn’t think I needed this but, I am up for trying anything so gave it a go. How I was wrong! After the first 4-5 days I started to feel amazing, my mindset was so focused and I felt happy and positive each day. It made me want to tell people about it and I did! I started documenting my progress on Instagram and people would message me saying I looked so good and asking me what this was and how they too could get involved.

How this opportunity helped me throughout lockdown:

As time passed my furlough leave turned into redundancy but I was feeling so positive and motivated with my new Arbonne business I didn’t feel negative at all. The combination of being on such an amazing healthy nutrition programme and all of the self-development work I had been doing made me remain calm and positive.

BLOG

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina Well, this feels like a really weird scripted horror film doesn’t it? Who would have thought when writing my last column that not only would the magazine print along with my column be on hold, but also the whole world? I’ve spent a good while thinking about what my first time writing again should be about. Along with this period being one of the most scariest, loneliest, saddest, daunting and anxiety ridden times - I decided my focus was going to be based on the good that’s come from covid and its lockdown (yes I shit you not - you did just read the words good, covid and lockdown in the same sentence). Writing for Close Up and speaking to my readers, even though I don’t know you all personally, really does feel like therapy sometimes, I find it a time I’m able to reflect, be honest and say how I feel, and writing Summer’s column in particular has really made me just pause on this crazy world we’re living in at the moment, turn off from the deaths, death tolls, conspiracy theories and political mayhem and focus on something way less heavy. So, I am thankful for… 1. Time. Time with my family, time to myself, time to read, bake, watch Netflix until I can’t Netflix no more, to exercise (even though it was only one morning where I managed a very unimpressive 1k before nearly passing out - but it all counts right?), time to just be free. Time is something I realised that we can never get back and it’s so valuable. Using the time we have had together away from work and away from nursery and dayto-day duties, Jamie, Rico and I have made some memories that we will never forget and that I am truly grateful for. 2. Realisations. I know this sounds super cheesy, but I’ve realised what is actually important. Being stripped bare of all our usual luxuries and routines, the things I thought I could never live without and things I may have taken for granted have

definitely changed. Like, who would have thought I could go three months without a blowdry? Oh and apparently, I can experiment enough with coffees to make them taste just as nice as Costa’s (Jamie would say anyway). I also realised that I took being able to pop over to see our family for granted and didn’t realise how hard it would be without that. I also realised that we don’t need to spend so much money on our days out with Rico to entertain him and make sure he has a good time, going on a bear hunt in the woods, looking for insects under rocks and turning the front room into a supermarket was just as enjoyable (if not more!). 3. Appreciations. Lockdown has stripped us back to basics and made us have a newfound love and appreciation for each other. The appreciation for people and their jobs, what they do for the community. Realising we can’t go a week without a FaceTime to our friends, quiz nights with the families, actually appreciating our jobs (and realising I definitely never want to be a stay at home mum - Rico I love you but we need a break son!). We’re a generation of a non-stop life, full speed, full pelt ahead, and I’m actually grateful for being forced to stop, refocus, re-evaluate and restart. So farewell lockdown, you’ve been unforgettable, for the good, the bad and damn right heart-breaking. I pray for everyone who hasn’t had it great during this period, and hope that peace returns to all of our homes with our new found reality. We’ve got this! Until next time lovelies,

THE BROW KONNECT There are two things that make me happy in life, good food and good brows - and I get to do that every day by giving women great eyebrows.

I’m Kelara and I’m the Kreator of The Brow Konnect. I have always been passionate about brows, but it wasn’t until after I had my daughter Rio that I embarked on my selfemployed career. I spent a year doing extensive research into microblading before taking the plunge and officially beginning my own eyebrow journey, and I have never looked back. The first training course I did was with a PhiBrow Master, which is where I learnt microblading and microshading. I qualified in November 2018, and in January 2019 The Brow Konnect was born. I then went to Birmingham and trained with Etch Cosmetics to do a Conversion Masterclass, where I learnt how to do digital machine brows, but my training wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. The first day I ever tried microblading I cried. It was so much harder than I ever expected. Doing an eyebrow with a blade was completely different to doing it with a pencil.

I always knew I wanted my brand to be personal to me, which is why all my eyebrow treatments have their own names beginning with a K. I currently offer three brow treatments. “The Original Konnect Brow” was the first treatment I started offering and is microblading hair strokes. I followed this with “The Kombination Brow”, which is a combination of microblading hair strokes and digital machine to create a bolder brow effect with a sharp finish. At the end of 2019 I did a henna brow course and in January 2020 I started offering “The Kult Brow” as a natural alternative. The henna brow is my only non-semi-permanent treatment I offer and is suitable for all skin types. It’s also a great alternative for pregnant women who still want to have great brows during pregnancy. But this is only the first chapter of The Brow Konnect’s story - there are more treatments yet to come, so make sure you’re following to hear about them as soon as they’re launched. I’ll also be offering discounts throughout August, so make sure you book your appointment.

Love TBK xoxo @TheBrowKonnect

EDUCATION

School’s

OUT!

by Anna Pericleous, teacher and leader of Early Years and Primary education.

The school term has once again come to an end! I read a fantastic quote online which alluded to teachers being solar panels and the summer break being their time to re-charge before they use their energy once more. During the month of June, leaders of education and all school staff worked exceptionally hard to follow the government guidelines and re-open schools safely. My experience was planning, assessing and preparing the classroom environment (along with other tasks). The ‘new normal’ school environment was initially shocking and took some time to get used to. Despite my concerns, I knew that above all else the children’s safety and wellbeing were the most important factors. This meant that as professionals we pulled together and focussed on the strategies and positives rather than dwelling on the worries. When the first day arrived where we welcomed the children back (ofcourse not all), although the routine was different to what we were all used to, the first thing I noticed were the smiles and joy beaming out of the children! The children had evidently missed us and their school. We explained the new school boundaries and why we had put them in place and the day commenced. I immediately noticed how the children adapted to their new environment without hesitation. The children saw the new environment as an adventure and I watched them explore it with curiosity. Furthermore, they were able to learn, have fun and feel comfortable which is what we wanted and aimed for. The children’s resilience and passion for learning really inspired me. I was able to teach them and care for them as well as I did before COVID-19. Whilst watching the children (in awe at their strength), I thought to myself... we worry so much (with good reason) but sometimes we should follow the children’s lead. The children in school and those at home showed us that they will acclimatise and continue to surprise us despite the circumstances. Thank you children! To continue the spirit of memory making... here are some fun ideas to keep families busy over the summer holidays: • Visit a London Landmark and create a fact file or tourist booklet for it • Have a day by the sea side and create and write a postcard for a loved one • Visit a different town or city (e.g. York) and research its history. • Visit a local food market and create a menu with the ingredients you have bought • Take part in bird watching in the garden or a local park and see if you can identify the different species. Use the worksheets from www.rspb.org/uk I hope that everyone has an enjoyable and restful summer! Follow my start up Instagram based on fun education activities for younger children.

WINCHMORE HILL

How Palmers Green High School ensured ‘continued learning’ during the Covid-19 Pandemic and how we embraced the change PGHS specialises in educating girls and continued to do so throughout the period of school closure. The School moved all of its teaching and learning online and operated through Microsoft Teams. The girls from Year 4 upwards followed a full timetable with the younger girls using a modified version that better suited their learning needs. Staff delivered live lessons in a range of very interactive and creative ways. Work was set, submitted, marked and feedback given. All of this meant that the staff and the girls knew exactly where they were with their learning, just as they would if School were open. As lockdown eased, we carried out a full risk assessment and welcomed back the younger girls to School in June in a well prepared, careful and sensible way.

It was the same story in the Senior School where all pupils from Year 7 to 11 had their full timetable delivered to them remotely using Teams. All of our Senior pupils were taught what they would have been taught at school, just in a different manner. Whatever the future holds for us, we know that remote teaching and learning have brought another dimension to our everyday life and we have learnt to embrace the change.

On returning to School, girls in Reception have been able to continue their indoor and outdoor curriculum safely. We have bright and airy classrooms and a lovely outdoor space. We have been reading, writing, using construction, painting, measuring, adding and subtracting, to name just a few activities. We feel confident that the girls have not fallen behind academically or socially.

Looking ahead to September, PGHS is in a strong position to ensure that all girls will be able to return to School in a safe and organised manner. The advantage we have is that we are a small School with fewer than 300 pupils, small class sizes and a one form entry. We have a dedicated team of staff who work together to ensure that the girls are happy and fully engaged.

Nanny

LOUENNA Having graduated from the prestigious Norland College over 15 years ago, Louenna has since worked with a number of high-profile families and helped to enrich the lives of the many young children she has worked with. Using her extensive knowledge and experience caring for children from birth to teenagers, Louenna has now collated a whole host of information and advice into one handy app. This covers everything from feeding, bathing and changing, to sleep routines, potty training and more! We caught up with Louenna to find out what it takes to be a Norland nanny and her best tips on keeping your children busy this summer.

Hi Louenna! Congratulations on the launch of your new app ‘Nanny Louenna’. Can you tell us a little bit about it? Thank you so much! The app is a childcare encyclopaedia where I have shared all my tips and advice on everything from what to buy for your new baby and packing your hospital bag, to all aspects of caring for a newborn, step by step weaning plans, routines, developmental stages, potty training, teaching children to read, and everything in between! Unlike a book, the app will be with you wherever you are, so if you need information quickly, it’s all there and searchable in seconds. I have created video demonstrations so it’s like I’m really with you, guiding you through how to help your babies and children be as happy and content as possible. When did you decide you wanted to become a nanny? For as long as I can remember I wanted to become a nanny! I am the eldest of four and always mothered my younger brothers! For me, there was nothing else I wanted to do and I was so excited to start my first nanny position. What does it take to be a Norland nanny? It takes dedication, a sense of humour, patience, and a real love for children to be a great nanny. What kind of training do you receive at Norland that other nanny’s wouldn’t necessarily be trained on? The training at Norland’s is very hands on and practical. Throughout the course you work in a wide range of settings I worked on a maternity ward, in family homes, nursery schools and junior schools. So you get experience working with every age group. My tutor was a Norland Nanny herself and so used to share all her experiences and wisdom with us, which I loved. Have you carried your techniques from Norland to your personal home life? I’m a naturally organised person and like a tidy house! Before I leave a family each evening I would make sure the playroom and anything to do with the children is tidied away. I love cooking and definitely learned some techniques from the cooking lessons we had at Norland’s. What do parents look for in a nanny? They look for someone kind and trustworthy, with the knowledge of how to care for their child to the very highest standard. A good attitude and a natural rapport with children is so important.

It takes dedication, a sense of humour, patience, and a real love for children to be a great nanny.

A good attitude and a natural rapport with children is so important. With the lockdown of schools and children being out of routine, what tips could you give on getting bedtime back on track? Create a bedtime routine so that children know what’s coming. Don’t miss the 7pm bedtime window, if children get overtired they find it much harder to settle down and drift off to sleep. Make sure your children have lots of fresh air during the day, and a delicious carb filled dinner. Enjoy a nice warm bubble bath and story time before tucking them in.

A lot of parents are feeling quite unsettled about going abroad this year due to Covid-19, what outdoor activities/ escapes would you recommend this summer in the UK? There’s so much we can do here at home, sometimes it’s nice not to have to worry about getting on a plane and children don’t need to go abroad to make happy childhood memories. Camping in the garden is one of the most exciting things for a child!! Get torches, make a little camp fire… and the best thing is, if anyone has a wobble in the night, you can decamp to the comfort of your own bed! A trip to the beach is one of my favourite day trips, there are endless activities you can do on the sand and children love the sound of the water and the feeling of the vast expanse of fresh air. A great night’s sleep always follows a day at the beach. Geocaching is really fun with older children, download the app and find where the treasure is in your local area. This can make walks and bike rides much more exciting. Children love eating outside, take a picnic to your local park or National Trust site where the children can let off steam and then stop for a delicious lunch.

The Nanny Louenna app is available to download from the App Store and Google Play with subscriptions starting from £4.99 a month

Rhubarb

GALETTE by Tonia Buxton I love making galettes because you don’t have to be perfect, the pastry is very forgiving and it’s supposed to look rustic. I’m using rhubarb because that’s what is in my garden at the moment but you can make it with any fruit you like, try pears or peaches.

Ingredients 250 g (9oz) plain flour, plus extra to dust 100 g (3 and a half oz) caster sugar, plus 3tbsp extra 150 g (5oz) unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small pieces 1tsp ground cinnamon 1 egg yolk 700 g (1 and a half lb) rhubarb, sliced into 2cm (3/4in) diagonal slices 1 tbsp. vanilla extract 3 tbsp. semolina 1 med egg, beaten 2 tbsp. demerara sugar Custard, and ice-cream to serve Directions 1. In a food processor, pulse the flour, 3tbsp sugar, butter and a large pinch of fine salt until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Or rub the flour, 3tbsp sugar, butter and pinch of salt together using a table knife until it forms pea-sized lumps, then continue to rub the mixture together with fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. In a bowl, beat together the egg yolk with 3tbsp ice-cold water. Gradually add yolk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring it in quickly by hand or with the food processor motor running, until the mixture just comes together into large flakes without becoming sticky. Turn out pastry on to a lightly floured surface and gently bring together with your hands, kneading briefly. Flatten to form a disc shape, then wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30min. 2. In a large bowl, mix rhubarb with the remaining 100g (3 and a half oz) sugar and set aside for 1hr, stirring occasionally until juices are released from the fruit. Use a slotted spoon to lift rhubarb out of juice into another large mixing bowl and stir through the vanilla extract. Set juice aside for later. 3. Heat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) mark 4 with a flat baking tray inside to preheat. Lightly flour the work surface and a rolling pin and roll pastry out into a circle about 35.5cm (14in) wide. Trim 1cm (1/2in) off the scraggy pastry edge to neaten. Use the rolling pin to lift the dough on to a large piece of baking parchment. Use a 20.5cm (8in) cake tin to gently press an indent in the centre of the pastry to mark out a circle. Evenly sprinkle semolina inside the circle and pile the rhubarb on top. Brush the 5cm (2in) pastry border with egg. Fold the border up and over the edge of the fruit, pinching a seam at 5cm (2in) intervals. Chill for 15min. 4. Brush pastry rim with remaining egg and sprinkle with demerara sugar. Carefully slide on to the preheated baking sheet and bake for 30-40min until golden.

48 // Close Up Magazine

5. Before serving, simmer the reserved rhubarb juice and 3tbsp water in a small pan for 3-4min until reduced to 1tbsp. Brush over the baked fruit to glaze. Serve warm, with custard & ice-cream or just custard or just icecream but I love both! I also love this pie cold with a cup of tea for breakfast the next day.

INTERVIEW

Four of

DIAMONDS Four of diamonds made their debut to the world when they formed on Season 13 of the X Factor. The dynamic girl group finished in 8th place but didn’t let that stop them from making music together. Since then, they’ve toured alongside Rita Ora, performed at Manchester Pride, and released a handful of catchy singles.

During lockdown, we caught up with Yasmin, Caroline, Lauren and Sophia to talk about their new single ‘Superstar’, what they’ve been up to in quarantine and much more! Hi Ladies! How is quarantine life treating you all? Are you missing each other? Yasmin: Hello! Quarantine life is surprisingly not as bad as we thought it was going to be… we are lucky that we can still do lots of work on social media, so we have really been using it to our advantage! We’ve all turned into pro bakers like half the nation lol and are making sure we get our daily exercise. I’m really enjoying this time to also do things I don’t usually do such as reading and meditating. The girls and I are missing each other so much though I can’t deny it. We’re constantly chatting on our group chat every day, but we just want to give each other a big squeeze. This is the longest amount of time we’ve been apart.

We always think positively and dream big. We put our all into everything that we do. You all met on the X Factor in 2016, what made you want to go onto the show? Caroline: We’ve all grown up watching the show since it started in 2004 and have seen so many stars make their dreams come true. It’s an incredible platform and fast track into the industry so we really wanted to give it a go. We would always dream of having an opportunity like this and it was an amazing experience! We wouldn’t have met each other without it so we are so grateful. How does it feel when you hear your song on the radio? Yasmin: It feels incredible when I hear our song on the radio. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of the feeling. It makes me so happy. The best times are when you don’t expect to hear it and you’re just going about your daily life. The group chat goes crazy! Haha. What else is the end goal for you as a band? Caroline: We would love to go down in history as one of the most successful girl bands. We’re all about our music and would love to be recognised worldwide for having amazing songs and harmonies. The dream would be to have a succession of number one hits and to even win a Grammy, or two haha. We always think positively and dream big. We put our all into everything that we do.

50 // Close Up Magazine

You signed up as solo singers, did you ever think you’d be part of a band? Lauren: Do you know what, I don’t think I personally ever thought I’d end up in a band but my god I am SO happy I am. I genuinely think it’s so much more enjoyable in the industry when you can share the experiences with other people and bounce off of each other on stage and in music videos etc. I wouldn’t have it any other way now! Who would be your dream collaboration? Lauren: Haha we all have different ones, but my ultimate dream collaboration is Beyoncé or Destiny’s Child. Ultimate power girl band. However, on a more realistic level I would really love to collab with Dua Lipa, I think she’s so sick and a big British collab like that would be so nice! Your new single ‘Superstar’ has recently been debuted, congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about it? Sophia: Thank you!! Ahh this song is a special one, we’ve been so excited to release it. I think it’s especially exciting for us because Jamelia’s ‘Superstar’ was a song we all grew up with and love so much, so when we got the opportunity to release our version with Joe Stone we were absolutely buzzing. It was so fun to record, too. It’s more of an up-beat dance vibe which is different to the rest of our music but follows on perfectly from our last single ‘Let Me Love You’. You can’t help but dance when you hear it and we love that!!!! Are you working on anything else right now? Sophia: We have something very exciting in the pipeline which we cannot WAIT to share. It’s been a long time coming and let me just say the video is EPIC!

FILM REVIEW

What’s on

NETFLIX The seemingly endless scroll of Netflix’s treasure trove of terrific shows and movies can be more than a little paralyzing when trying to choose something to watch. If you’ve just finished a good series and need a new one to fill the void, Close Up is assembling a monthly list of the best TV shows currently available on the streaming service, from classics of yesteryear to the hottest new titles. Below, we’ve rounded up the best shows on Netflix right now, so you can binge-watch without having to hunt for the right title.

NEVER HAVE I EVER Number of seasons: 1 Never Have I Ever is a coming-of-age dramedy about a young woman who, after the death of her father, decides she wants to change her life and elevate her social status. However, Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), an Indian girl raised in America, finds that her family and friends aren’t fully on board with this renaissance. Considered a standout in a crowded field of coming-of-age dramedies on Netflix, Never Have I Ever delightfully balances the traditional perils of high school like teen romance and popularity with the challenges of grief, being a first-generation American, and finding yourself in a crowd of loved ones.

UNORTHODOX Number of seasons: 1 This miniseries follows Esty, a 19-year-old woman who flees her ultraorthodox upbringing in Williamsburg’s Hasidic Jewish community and ends up in Berlin, where she soon discovers quite how different life can be. But as she tries to find new friends and make a fresh start in the city, her husband Yanky and his shady cousin Moishe are in pursuit, determined to bring her back. The plot is dramatic and compelling, with flashbacks to Esty’s experiences around her arranged marriage providing an interesting insight into orthodox life and her struggles to play the role expected of her. The clash of cultures is sometimes played up to the point of silliness, but the strength of Shira Haas’ performance in the leading role will keep you glued to the screen. We just wish there were more than four episodes.

QUEER EYE Number of seasons: 5 The original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy introduced the world to a whole new kind of reality show. More than a decade later, Netflix rebooted the franchise with a new Fab Five and a new mission. The new Fab Five consists of food and wine specialist Antoni Porowski, interior designer Bobby Berk, grooming consultant Jonathan Van Ness, fashion designer Tan France, and culture expert Karamo Brown. Every season, they travel to new parts of the country to meet and pick up underrecognized people, helping them to find the value within themselves and accomplish a specific goal. It’s a heart-warming, provocative show that sees the Fab Five fly into cities and rural areas where they very clearly stand out and attempt to prove that we’re all not that different after all.

WHEN THEY SEE US

THE LAST DANCE

Number of seasons: 1

The Last Dance is simultaneously a ten-part documentary about the greatest basketball team of all time and also a show that really isn’t about basketball at all. It follows the Chicago Bulls’ record-breaking NBA championship run, with behind-the-scenes access to documentary footage shot throughout the 1997-98 season, but is really about what it takes to be successful. Underlying the entire show is what motivated Michael Jordan to become, arguably, the greatest of all time – and continue performing at that level. Top tip: don’t get him mad.

The four-part miniseries re-enacts the excruciating case of the Central Park Five, a group of black and Latino teens from Harlem, who were wrongly convicted of the rape and attempted murder of a white woman in 1989. Filmmaker Ana DuVernay – with Oprah Winfrey and Robert de Niro among the executive producers – tells a true story of racial profiling, injustice and media misinformation over a 25-year timespan, from arrest to vindication.

BETTER CALL SAUL

MONEY HEIST

Number of seasons: 5

Number of seasons: 4

Starring Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul takes fans of Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad back to the New Mexico desert for a look at Saul Goodman’s origin story. Before Goodman became the quirky, crooked lawyer Walter White played like a fiddle, he was Jimmy McGill, an aspiring lawyer who just couldn’t seem to keep his hands clean. The show is set six years prior to the events of Breaking Bad, and throws out the convention that a spinoff must pale in comparison to its source material. It also proves Gilligan and company remain at the top of their game.

When a team of nine criminals launch an audacious heist at Spain’s Royal Mint, they are convinced that their meticulous plan has every eventuality covered. But things start to unravel when the enigmatic mastermind behind the heist starts getting close to the police detective in charge of securing the safe release of the 67 hostages. Although the twisting plot stretches the limits of credulity at points, Money Heist is a deliciously frenetic and tension-filled series that makes surprisingly sympathetic figures out of its devilish main characters.

PEAKY BLINDERS Number of seasons: 7 Set in the aftermath of World War I, Peaky Blinders is a crime drama about a British crime family, the Shelbys. After Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) returns from the war, he sets about trying to expand the family’s control of Birmingham, stealing a shipment of guns to give his gang an edge in the world of crime. The show follows Tommy and his family as they move up in the world, butting heads with other crime families and the British government. Peaky Blinders is gorgeously shot, and the story it tells is one of complicated people and muddy morality.

“I never thought the word ‘corona’ could shatter my dreams

THE YEAR I WAS GETTING MARRIED” By Anna Manoli

I have been dreaming about my wedding since I was 3 years old, I was obsessed with watching all my aunties and parents wedding videos, I watched them 2-3 times a day. My mum says ‘you were just totally obsessed!’ Fast forward 30 years and I finally met someone who I knew would be my husband. A success story from tinder, we hit it off from day one and 2 years later he proposed to me and we had already spoken about hosting our wedding in the island of Ios in Greece, an island that was very special to us. Me being the most organised person ever, I managed to confirm the venue within 3 weeks and started the search for a wedding planner. 2 months later my mum, sister and I flew to Ios to finalise the last few bits and meet our wedding planner (Zak was happy to leave the details to the ladies lol). It was a successful trip, the wedding planner was the most amazing in the game, florist; mind blowing, venue was the perfect location and the weather just right for a wedding in June. Date set 20th June 2020, it sounded perfect with an after-wedding white party on the 21st.

2020 took a turn for the worst – a pandemic was about to ruin all our lives. We celebrated our engagement party 27th July 2019 and by September our invitations were ready and posted to all our nearest and dearest – it was so exciting I just could not wait. By December, I had found and bought my wedding dress, the bridesmaid dresses were all sorted, Zaks suit and both our

shoes were purchased and I had even bought almost all of our summer clothes and, don’t laugh, even all our toiletries and sun creams! Come January, the replies were returned so the favours were ordered for the wedding and white party. Everything from hungover bags to flip flops to customised robes for bridesmaids, literally everything you can think of was ordered and ready to be shipped to Athens for the wedding planner to bring with her to the island. I even got my dad to design and make all our wedding frames for our table plans and welcome signs and they were all wrapped and ready to be shipped over. By February, there was nothing to do at all just wait for the big day. Of course, as we all know, 2020 took a turn for the worst. Something all of us probably couldn’t believe was happening. A pandemic was about to ruin all our lives. At first, Zak and I were in denial. He was adamant things will blow over and be ok and for me not to worry at all. So, I stayed calm, I was so sure that things would be ok, and we would be getting married this year. Another month passes and the panic sets in, Zak looked at me one night and I said to him, ‘you know this wedding isn’t going to happen.’ His reply ‘I’m marrying you this year no matter what’. End of March, we sat down to make the decision we were forced to make and cancel our wedding, 33 years I waited to get married and of course this would happen the year I wanted

TRAVEL

I said to him, ‘you know this wedding isn’t going to happen.’ His reply, ‘I’m marrying you this year no matter what. to get married – the devastation was indescribable, I was heartbroken, I felt sorry for myself. Why would this happen to us? But we had to remain positive, I put a smile on my face and just had to accept it is what it is. We were worried about how much money we would lose; would we be able to postpone to the following year? Would all our vendors be available? Would our venue understand? And are we even covered by our wedding insurance? Thankfully my very smart mother took out the best wedding insurance and would you believe it – we were covered for infectious diseases around the world! The next step was the hardest, trying to rearrange a whole wedding in 3 days so we could have all the original vendors. It was a chase of first come first serve so I jumped on it! Our wedding planner thankfully secured the florist and videographer, I chased the two DJ’s and photographer trying to get a date they both could do as deposits were paid, we didn’t want to lose them! Next came making sure all of our close family and bridesmaids were able to make the date and also whilst doing all the above – which was the most stressful thing I’ve ever had to do in such a short space of time – you also have to consider other weddings taking place so you don’t clash!

We are now in April and we have gone from looking forward to our wedding in 3 months, to our wedding being over a year away. It is hard every day to swallow that something so sacred to us has been taken away so quickly. It’s a feeling I can’t even explain, the excitement is still there but the sadness that we were so close and now so far away hits me all the time. I know we had no choice and of course there are worse things going on in the world, but it doesn’t stop us from feeling sad about something so special being cancelled! It’s not just the wedding that has been delayed but our whole lives, delaying us having a baby and just starting the next chapter of our lives. I know a few brides that have been going through the same nightmare as us and we turn to each other for support, keeps us positive. In this crisis we are living, our main concern was for our guests to be healthy and safe and for this to pass so we can all go back to our normal lives again. We will have our dream wedding, on our dream island, with all our favourite people, just a year later. And by then, I’m sure everyone will be desperate for a holiday, a celebration and a big fat Greek wedding.

It is hard every day to swallow that something to sacred to us has been taken away so quickly. Close Up Magazine // 59

QUARANTINE READS For those fortunate enough to be able to work and quarantine at home during the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an opportunity to read, watch and listen to all of the work and art you always said you would digest but never seemed to find time for. Whether you are looking for a book that will help you look inward, teach you about race or strong leadership, explore grief, or just makes you laugh, this succinct but strong list is a good kick-off to your summer reading: Untamed by Glennon Doyle Since much of the world has been quarantined, many of us find ourselves with newfound time: to reflect, to learn how to use tiktok, to consider the kind of person we want to be on the other side of this pandemic. In Doyle’s third memoir, she is an expert witness of her metamorphosis these last few years, and details how she acknowledged, confronted and conquered the internal and external obstacles that prevented her from being the truest, most unvarnished version of herself. She ended a marriage she stayed in for her children, fell in love with a woman, married her and built a new family with her ex-husband, new wife, three children and their French bull dog. Doyle is an unrelenting champion of all people (but especially women) listening to their own voices and living their lives on their own terms. So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo Protests and riots have broken out around the country as a result of systemic policy brutality, and in response to the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. In light of the racism and systemic inequality America is confronting, now is a good time to read Oluo’s So You Want To Talk About Race. Her book discusses everything from police brutality to mass incarceration. It also delves into how you broach difficult conversations around race, like how do you tell your friend her joke was racist? Oluo’s book goes where few dare to venture: honest conversations about race, and how racism impacts all aspects of American life. Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby After digesting the devastation inflicted by covid-19 and being in quarantine for months, one thing we are in dire need of is big belly laughs. Irby feeds our soul in her hilarious and explicit collection of essays,Wow, No Thank You. She chronicles her increasing discomfort with her body as she turns forty, becoming a successful writer, being courted by Hollywood television executives, getting married, moving out of Chicago to a smaller Midwestern city where she can have a garden and a house and go on awkward new friend dates. Readers will wish they were quarantining with Irby.

Children’s Wishes and Feelings PREVAIL IN BITTER PATERNITY DISPUTE By Mark Heselton

In the throes of family breakdown, parents often focus on their own personal battles – but it is the best interests of their children that are always uppermost in family judges’ minds. In a case on point, the wishes and feelings of two teenagers proved the decisive factor in a bitter paternity dispute. The man who brought up the children, aged 13 and 15, suspected that they were not in fact his progeny. He believed that their true father was a man his then wife, the children’s mother, had met at work. Since his divorce, he had, amongst other things, subjected the boy and girl to off-the-shelf DNA tests, taking mouth swabs under the pretence of checking their dental hygiene. In seeking a declaration under Section 55A of the Family Law Act 1986 that he was not the children’s father, he pointed to a number of factors, including those test results and the alleged physical resemblance between the children and the putative father. Although he was paying maintenance in respect of the children, he insisted that he had their welfare at heart and denied that his application was financially motivated. Ruling on the matter, a judge noted the children’s feelings of violation and confusion at having been subjected to DNA tests without their knowledge. Those tests having been performed in uncontrolled conditions, he declined to take their results into account. The children were mature enough for their wishes and feelings to be given great weight and both had declined to undergo further forensic tests. The judge acknowledged that there was evidence indicating that the man might not be their father and that an eventual

resolution of the paternity issue was likely to be in their best interests. Requiring him to meet the legal obligations of fatherhood in respect of children that might not be his would potentially amount to a violation of his human right to respect for his home and family life. Striking a balance, the judge directed the man, the children’s mother and the putative father to provide DNA samples for testing. The results of those tests would be sealed in an envelope and stored securely. The children were also required to provide DNA samples, but that part of the judge’s order was stayed indefinitely so that they would not have to comply with it until they felt ready to do so.
