EDITOR'S LETTER

Hello

SEPTEMBER September is always such an exciting month full of transition. As our columnist Kat would say, September should mark the new year instead of January, do you agree? As we say goodbye to the warm summer evenings and put our summer clothes away for another year, we’re saying hello to the new school year (although in very different circumstances), hello to falling leaves, autumn fashion and my favourite time of all – Christmas! Yes I said it and I don’t take it back, I love Christmas. It’s a little early I agree, but I’m sure you’ll start to see a few things popping up in your local Sainsbury’s soon. Hot chocolate, cosy dinners, knitted jumpers and knee high boots are all on their way! September also marks our birthday here at Close Up! Close Up is celebrating 14 years this month and what an incredible 14 years that has been. There have been many different faces, many laughs and many tears but each month we put our all into creating this beautiful book full of inspiration, life hacks, goals and of course, the best of your local community.

COVER INTERVIEW

Kerry Washington

THE GIRL ON FIRE After making her film debut in 2000’s Our Song, Washington starred in such films as Save the Last Dance and Bad Company. She later earned wide acclaim for her work in Ray and The Last King of Scotland. In 2012 she began her run on the TV drama Scandal, receiving Emmy nominations for her portrayal of main character Olivia Pope.

In Little Fires Everywhere, the bestselling book by Celeste Ng that’s come to TV via Hulu and Amazon Prime, characters Elena and Mia may flip from cajoling each other to antagonizing each other, but this is not the case with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, who play the respective roles. The storyline focuses on Elena (Witherspoon), the head of the Richardson family, living in the planned community of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Mia, a single mother, and her fifteenyear-old daughter, Pearl, who rent a house in the area. Their very different lives merge in an unexpected manner, and begin to contort the perceived reality that each one has about her present situation and future. In addition to appearing on screen, both are producers on the series.

‘How can we partner together to also create more environments that are filled with equity and safety in our own industry?’ For me, that’s been the exciting result of coming together as a community.” In telling the story of the women at the centre of the narrative, Washington says, “I think from the beginning, the book really does delve into class and kind of socio-political differences and cultural differences. The book also deals with race and I think does a beautiful job of stepping away from this binary idea we have of race in this country, of black and white. Because we’re also dealing with Asian identity and immigrant identity and again, class. This is a lot, it’s a lot to unpack.”

When you centre women and women’s stories, that becomes a political act.

Offering her take on the partnership, Washington says, “Two things. One is very similar, in that Reese cares as much as I do. But, the second thing is that I trust her. There’s not a lot of people in this business that I trust with my full inner life the way that I trust Reese. We really revealed ourselves to each other, and I never felt like in that nakedness we were unsafe. That’s not always true in the workplace. That you have that kind of phenomenal trust.”

This kind of environment was only made possible by recent societal events, explains Washington. “One of the extraordinary impacts of the Time’s Up movement is that so many of us came together to try to advance the cause of equity and safety in the workplace. We were no longer siloed. For so much of my career, I had been told that so-and-so actress was crazy, so-and-so actress was difficult, this other actress is bad news. And when we were all gathered in a room and we got to ask each other,

Little Fires Everywhere isn’t afraid to make statements about a lot of topics, such as racism and motherhood. Delving into this further, Washington says “The strange reality of being a woman in the entertainment business – particularly a woman of colour – is that because for us for so long our heroes only looked one way. When you centre women and women’s stories, that becomes a political act. You are saying something just by putting women at the centre of our own lives and dealing with us as three-dimensional human beings. So, I think it’s hard for us to be lead actors and producers in a project and not make a statement just because of the world around us.” Speaking of her co-worker Kerry says, “I think I also learned that a lot of Reese’s power comes from her authenticity. It’s very easy in life to fall into certain roles and toe some company line. Every day she is filled with joy and light, but also with truth. That is so refreshing and freeing – if you ask her ‘how are you’ she’s really going to tell you. I love that.

COVER INTERVIEW

If I could work every day with Reese Witherspoon for the rest of my life, I would. It’s no wonder that some fans are eager to tug on those dangling plot threads in a second season, and Hulu will probably be keen too if the ratings are anything to go by. Washington explains “We have no plans for a Season 2 [laughs]. We really don’t. I mean, every once in a while, we think, like, can we come up with an idea for Season 2 because we just love working together? This group, Liz Tigelaar and Hello Sunshine and Simpson Street, if I could work every day with Reese Witherspoon for the rest of my life, I would. She is just a dream, and my sister really. But we don’t have plans for a Season 2. We have other projects in development.” As the current pandemic halted the world, the Hollywood industry were succumbed to their Hidden Hills homes and all filming was paused along with Ryan Murphy’s upcoming screen adaptation of the recent Broadway musical The Prom. Kerry’s The Prom cast members are a star-studded group, also including Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Awkwafina, James Corden and Andrew Rannells. “I was going to be filming “The Prom”. I was scheduled to film and we did multiple phone calls about it with my physician because I had childhood asthma and my parents are both 80 and live in our guest house. So, I have to be really, really careful. But it just wound up that with rewrites, the scenes that I was going to complete, we didn’t need to do. I felt really good about the protocols, but it was going to be like literally a half a day, which I was like, “Do we really need that moment?” Speaking of her talents and upcoming role in The Prom Kerry says, “I did a ton of musical theatre in high school and college. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to flex those muscles and I’ve never sung on screen before. So it was really fun. And I loved working with my onscreen daughter, Ariana Debose. She is Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and she’s just so brilliant. And she was The Prom will the Bullet in “Hamilton.” I’m debut on Netflix really excited for everybody in 2020. to see her in the film. Meryl Streep is phenomenal. Little Fires Everywhere She’s always phenomenal, is available to stream but I’m telling you, in “The on Amazon Prime Prom,” it’s like just being Video now. there during filming. I was like, she’s incredible.”

INTERVIEW

From TV

TO RADIO We caught up with model and former Love Islander Cally Jane on being a working mum, pandemic pressure and her hotly anticipated new single Heart Sing ft UK rapper GEKO.

Congratulations on releasing your new single! Can you tell us a little bit about it and what it means to you? Thank you! It’s mainly about experiences and emotions. It’s a really feel-good song full of confidence and women empowerment, as well as showing a vulnerable side too. All the songs I release are from the heart and from experiences and that’s what makes them so relatable. How would you describe the music that you typically create? I’ve been working really hard for about a year in the studio with my team and seeing the direction I want to go in and the message I want to put across. For me, I really want to bring back the old-school styles like Ashanti and Aliyah. I feel like we don’t have that anymore and it’s not as raw, it’s all very sassy but I like to cross-mix the two. It’s amazing to feel confident and sassy but it’s also ok to feel emotions. Working on these tracks you can see the pattern is between Pop and R&B. How did your music career take off and what is the best advice you’ve been given on this journey? I’ve been working on music for the last four years, I’ve always wanted to do music and I’ve always visioned myself performing on stage. I grew up in a dance and theatre background so it was always something that I’ve wanted to explore. I got pregnant in 2017 so the music took a backseat but as I’ve grown as a mum,

28 // Close Up Magazine

I’ve realised that I can still go ahead with my dreams and there’s some really successful pop stars out there that are mums and still releasing music. My team said to me, ‘if it’s real, people will relate to it and people will understand you becoming an artist. Be real and tell your story.’ People might think they know about my life but my life’s been quite private even though I’m in the public eye. Music is my way of expressing, it’s my therapy. Who would you most like to collaborate with? I would definitely say someone like Tory Lanez or Chris Brown. My absolute idol who unfortunately has passed is Aliyah. I just think she’s amazing. How do you balance being a parent and work? Has lockdown made this more challenging? My mum is my godsend, she is like my full-time nanny and my daughter Viena just adores her. Without my mum, I probably wouldn’t be as lucky enough to work on my music as full-pace as I have been. But I do have to say for anyone who is a mum, your life doesn’t have to stop and you can be a good mum and still have your own dreams and aspirations. What’s next for you? At the moment I’m releasing a constant flow of music, building the music up as an artist and the next step would be our team expanding and making the vision a lot bigger.

INTERVIEW

“Now is my time to do

THE BEST THING I’VE EVER DONE” He’s a chart topping, four-time platinum artist, rapper, singer, song-writer and a Dad! In an exclusive interview, Dappy reveals “I’m just getting started” as the release of his EP is just around the corner…

How’s the lockdown experience been for you? What have you been getting up to? I’ve been in the studio! I’ve invested in a very powerful vocal room. I’m a writer, I like my big harmony’s, my big adlibs and my big epic vocals! I had a studio when I was younger but I’ve taken it very seriously now so I’ve got a proper rig. You’ll be hearing me a lot more often. In the last year I’ve been doing features, so you’ve probably seen a bit of me everywhere, but now I’m going to focus on myself with a few surprise features. Sounds exciting! As you mentioned you’ve been in the studio, so as most people took a break in the lockdown it seems you have been working hard on your music?

When we came out as N-Dubz it was hardcopies, physical copies and now you do everything through your small device, your whole world and life is through the iPhone. You could be doing something in the supermarket and it goes viral and everyone’s talking about you, it’s great when it’s good!

It’s been tricky to move from N-Dubz to being solo, but I feel like it’s time for me now to take myself to the next level.

Yes definitely, I have a family too so I’ve also been busy being Daddy! I have three children but I feel like I’m also getting younger haha! I can’t explain how excited I am for the world to hear this new ‘Dappy’. Now is my time to do the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m very grateful for going 4th time platinum, and it just shows me that I have loads more to give and I’d like to make sure I deliver great music.

The main thing for me is, my music can actually help people, my acoustic music, me actually singing and picking up a guitar and writing a song that will help you get through. This year I have a lot going on I’ve got a lot of surprises.

30 // Close Up Magazine

“I Swear” came out in 2006, what would you say are the biggest changes that you’ve noticed in the industry between then and now?

A lot of people remember me as young and in N-Dubz which is my group, it was my way in. It’s been tricky to move from N-Dubz to being solo, but I feel like it’s time for me now to take myself to the next level because apart from all the controversy I’ve always been a great musician.

I love this game, I love sitting down and writing something, chiselling away at it until it’s perfect and releasing it to connect with the masses. Being able to tour and seeing all these different boroughs and countries singing along to the thing that I worked so hard at to make in that room. It’s a priceless feeling. There’s a lot of young musicians now that are trying to achieve the same level of success that you’ve had, what advice would you give them? The new generation that are coming up now are very clued up, they know what they’re doing but all I could say is to be unique with your image. The biggest and the best artists have always got a pure heart and they’re always very good people who love to spread love.

Close Up Magazine // 31

INTERVIEW

You have always been an artist whose music style has been unique in the sense that you’re as good a singer as you are a rapper, do you have a preference over one style and how do you decide which style you’re going to use when you’re in the studio? The way I find things and the way I go from a melody into a rap-type of singing is something I’ve always done, sometimes I think I would like to release some beautiful vocals but I like to mix the two. It’s a gift and a lot of people have this gift like Tory Lanez and Drake. Can you tell us a little about the EP you’re releasing? What kind of sound can we expect? The intro is being released (very soon I promise), I can’t give away too much but as you can tell I’m very excited and all I can say is it’s very realistic, and it’s a story that everyone can relate to, it’s very special to me and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

I feel in the best head and mind space I’ve ever been in. Drake’s been heavily involved in the UK music scene, could you see yourself collaborating? Definitely! Nothing will ever be forced; everything will always be organic! Speaking of the UK music industry, it’s probably healthier now than it’s ever been, who are your top 3 favourite artists? Ooo, I can’t choose! I just love everyone. I love what everyone brings, I’m a fan of everyone’s character. I watch, I respect and I take in everything. Generations go by and I feel like for me, I’m just getting started. I feel in the best head and mind space I’ve ever been in. Due to lockdown, events have been cancelled. When things get back to normal can we expect to see you on tour? Again, I can’t say too much but expect to see me on stage, up and down the country in either a big theatre or academy!

WHAT CAN I DO Jane Fonda In the fall of 2019, frustrated with the obvious inaction of politicians and inspired by Greta Thunberg, Naomi Klein, and student climate strikers, Jane Fonda moved to Washington, D.C., to lead weekly climate change demonstrations on Capitol Hill. On October 11, she launched Fire Drill Fridays, and has since led thousands of people in nonviolent civil disobedience, risking arrest to protest for action. In What Can I Do?, Fonda weaves her deeply personal journey as an activist alongside conversations with and speeches by leading climate scientists and inspiring community organizers, and dives deep into the issues, such as water, migration, and human rights, to emphasize what is at stake. Most significantly, Fonda equips us all with the tools we need to join her in protest, so that everyone can work to combat the climate crisis.

HOW TO STAY SANE IN AN AGE OF DIVISION Elif Shafak The must-read, pocket-sized Big Think book of 2020 It feels like the world is falling apart. So how do we keep hold of our optimism? How do we nurture the parts of ourselves that hope, trust and believe in something better? And how can we stay sane in this world of division? In this beautifully written and illuminating polemic, Booker Prize nominee Elif Shafak reflects on our age of pessimism, when emotions guide and misguide our politics, and misinformation and fear are the norm. A tender, uplifting plea for optimism, Shafak draws on her own memories and delves into the power of stories to reveal how writing can nurture democracy, tolerance and progress. And in the process, she answers one of the most urgent questions of our time.

Orley Farm School #Resilience! Tim Calvey took over the Headship of Orley Farm School in 2013 having previously been, amongst other teaching positions, Head of Boarding in two previous schools. He believes that at the heart of the Orley Farm experience is the passion in teachers to light fires in the minds of young people that burn for a lifetime! Orley Farm School was founded in 1850 and is set in 39 glorious acres of playing fields, woodland and meadow situated at the bottom of Harrow on the Hill. We have exceptional classroom facilities including a new Library, Science laboratories and a Drama Studio. We are home to 500 girls and boys aged 4 to 13 who are receiving an extraordinary educational experience that develops the whole child preparing them for future success. During the Covid-19 pandemic, our Thinking Skills have never been more relevant, as staff and pupils have come together to find a new way of successfully remote learning and looking after the well-being of our Orley Farm family. Especially, our key workers’ children who continued to come into school. We pride ourselves on preparing our young learners for life and therefore, we go well beyond assessment preparation and this is reflected in an Alumni who know the power and value of an outstanding start in life but more importantly, how to find fulfilment, purpose, joy and wonder in making a difference to others. We are very proud that we are able to find the right senior school for each individual pupil and over the past seven years, pupils have been offered 272 Scholarships and All Rounder awards to 60 different schools.

TRANSITION By Anna Pericleous Teacher and Leader of Early Years and Primary Education

This time of the year for parents and children can be an anxious time as the children begin to prepare themselves for a new year group, school or class. Due to the pandemic, children have had longer periods off school and have had to adapt to new ways of learning. These changes have possibly led to even more anxiety about returning to school. I suppose a good way to look at the circumstances we find ourselves in, is to say that we are all in this together. We are all going to have to continue to adapt to the ‘new normal’ environment along with our new settings. During the summer holidays teachers usually use some of their time to prepare their classrooms, this usually includes: displays, resources, labelling, filing, decor and cleaning... the list could easily go on - as we always say, we have a never-ending to do list. Along with this, teachers also begin to prepare activities and lessons based on transition. Transition is an extremely important process (more so now) whereby children are supported carefully through the new changes. It is important that children feel comfortable, ready for the year ahead and are surrounded by enabling environments. ‘Feeling like you belong has an impact on achievement and how well a child transitions’ (Mentally Healthy Schools). Schools plan meticulously for transition and are well skilled in supporting every child. In addition, schools will work cohesively with parents and carers. Parents and carers also play an important role in smooth transitioning. I have mentioned in my previous articles about how parents and carers can support their children through different experiences by communicating effectively with them. Therefore, I recommend talking to the children about any worries, concerns or even about what they look forward to. For example, if a parent or carer is researching their child’s new school by looking up the school’s website, include the children and share what you are most looking forward to. Give them as much information as they may need.

38 // Close Up Magazine

If we can show children that change can be good this will really develop their resilience. Another great way to encourage successful transitions with children is by completing fun activities with them about themselves, their new class, school or teacher. The children can take some of the activities they have completed back to school with them in September which will equally encourage their anticipation about returning. Here are some activities: • Create an ‘All About Me’ PowerPoint (KS2) or worksheet (KS1) www.tes.com www.twinkl.com www.activityvillage.co.uk • Write a list of what you enjoy most about school • Create a calendar where you can countdown the days until school begins or use the calendar to place important school dates such as sports day or class assembly. • Write a letter to your new teacher introducing yourself and telling them about your summer. • Create a collage of school (you can include school logo, uniform, sports, lunches etc.) I wish everyone a smooth start to their new school year! A CERTAIN CHOICE

in uncertain times

Choosing the right school for your daughter is an even more important decision in these unusual times. Knowing that your child will receive an engaging, robust and complete education in a safe environment is something you can be sure of if you choose PGHS. Number one in the Sunday Times’ league table for small independent schools, we welcome girls with the desire and potential to succeed in our diverse, aspirational and supportive school, where small class sizes are the norm and all pupils are known as individuals.

Wendy Kempster is Head of Palmers Green High School in North London.

DIVERSITY PGHS has always celebrated diversity and is proud of the multicultural make-up of our pupil-body. This year, seminars with our outgoing Year 11 pupils replaced study leave and the Psychology, Philosophy and History groups have left a new Diversity Society as their legacy. Passionate about equality and following the School’s motto, By Love Serve One Another, it builds on the recent Black Lives Matter campaigns to ensure that PGHS will continue to be a welcoming and inclusive school.

REMOTE LEARNING Our remote learning programme allowed teaching and learning to continue seamlessly throughout the period of school closure, meaning that our pupils, from Nursery to Year 11, completed the expected curriculum for their academic year in all subjects. Live lessons and interaction with teachers kept staff-pupil relationships strong and ensured that pupils maintained their positive and determined attitudes towards their studies.

PASTORAL CARE The pastoral care and wellbeing of our pupils is a priority at PGHS. We know every child as an individual and every member of staff receives training in supporting pupils pastorally as well as academically. This high level of care and attention is maintained whether physically in School or working from home; pupils are engaged in daily form time sessions, one-to-one and small group meetings with teachers, regular assemblies, and fun whole-school challenges and competitions.

Knowing that your child will receive an engaging, robust and complete education in a safe environment is something you can be sure of if you choose PGHS. THE FUTURE Whilst we hope that schools will enjoy a full reopening in September, we are confident that whether in School or at home, all our pupils will have access to a fantastic education where they can realise their potential academically and personally. If you are interested in becoming a part of the PGHS family, register for our Open Day on 10th October and view our virtual tours at www.pghs.co.uk. You can also check the latest availability for school places by calling Admissions on 020 8886 1135 or emailing office@pghs.co.uk.

BLOG

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina September. God I love September. I don’t know what it is, but September always feels like a new year for me (I think that’s the school mindset kicking in). If there’s one year that I’m definitely going to use September as a new year it’s for sure going to be 2020!

So here’s my mini new year to real new year goals:

September for me is a time for fresh starts, new beginnings, new goals. This year has made me crave September more than any other year, I cannot wait to get back to work, Rico to get back to nursery and some normality to form in our household (let’s be together in prayer against another lockdown God please!) September also gives me a kick in the ass because it reminds me that the real new year is only 4 months away and it tends to give me a new lease of energy to set myself some goals that I want to achieve or be well on my way for by the next year.

3. To start buying Christmas presents from September to avoid December stress

It could be something like giving yourself this time to start potty training, improving on fitness, losing or putting on some weight (I always love loosing extra weight before Christmas to give me free reign on eating ha!), saving some money, making some time for things you love, learning a new skill.

1. To kick the shit out of my new job 2. To have Rico back in a steady routine (bye bye 10pm bed times)

4. To plan and commit to one date night a month with Jamie 5. To start a gratitude diary that I fill in at night I hope this blog has inspired you to set some mini goals, whether they’re family ones, personal ones or just ones for your parenting! Write them down and smash them! Tag me on Instagram with your goals and let’s do this together! @keepingupwithkaterina Until next time lovelies

Preparatory School and Nursery For Boys and Girls aged 2 to 13 years

Our EYFS building, containing the nursery and reception classes, is an outstanding facility providing our children with the most up-to-date education. We also run three minibus routes (morning and evening) to help parents who might find the timings of journeys into school challenging. We are a school that is proud of its academic tradition, has a genuine sense of community and ensures the interests of the girls and boys are very much at heart. As educators, and in the increasingly competitive environment in which children find themselves today, we believe it is our duty to foster creative thinking, to develop independent learning and to support every child in gaining the confidence to believe and know that they ‘can’. As we are unable to run our usual Open Day Tours, we are pleased to announce we are now offering a reduced number of private tours, in line with the latest Government guidelines, allowing parents the opportunity to safely view our school and to see why we believe it is such a special place for young children to learn and flourish. INTERVIEW

An interview with Love Island’s

JOANNA CHIMONIDES We caught up with Love Island beauty Joanna Chimonides to talk about her latest podcast, love life and an exciting new project!

So great to catch up with you after our lockdown Q&A! How has life been for you since coming out of lockdown? Life has been so so busy since coming out of lockdown which is fab! I have had a few photoshoots since and it has been so nice to distantly socialise whilst at these shoots! And not to forget, going out for dinner with my friends has been my highlight!! Home cooked meals were definitely getting boring haha! But since restaurants have opened, I have eaten out quite a lot!! You recently became a co-host on BBC Radio 1’s ‘Reality Tea’ Podcast, can you tell us a little bit about the podcast and what to expect? Presenting is my absolute dream job! So to be the new co-host for the reality tea podcast, it was the best feeling in the world!! The podcast is all about bringing your favourite reality stars to talk about funny experiences they’ve had, life now and also just getting more of a personal insight into their lives. We see celebs on our screens for one hour, and sometimes we want to know more about their lives so this is the place to find this out! Most recently we had a youtuber on, and the reason I chose this guest was because I realised that not only do reality stars show us their everyday lives but so do youtubers, but just from a computer screen! He was brilliant!

When I meet the right person, I’ll know to give them 100% Who would be your dream guest on the podcast and why? I have so many haha!! My dream guest would be someone like the Kardashians, or Zac Efron or even Grey Worm from Game of Thrones!! He is amazing! I have way too many people in mind and I really hope to get them on haha. It’s been a year since you entered the Love Island villa, is there anyone special in your life at the moment? If were talking about dating, I wish!! Haha I have only ever been on 4 dates in my whole life (excluding love island) and I just find it really hard to not only find time for dating but also to find someone that I think I could really see a future with!! I wouldn’t say I’m a serial dater because I’m one of those people who hate wasting time! My biological clock gets the better of me sometimes haha! When I meet the right person, I’ll know to give them 100% of my time for sure!!

44 // Close Up Magazine

What did your Love Island experience teach you? My love island experience taught me to trust my gut! You’ll know if something is right and you’ll know when something isn’t good for you, and this goes for everything in your life! I look back on myself in some episodes and think, omg is that me! I have grown up so much since then and it’s only been a year! It’s crazy. What advice would you give someone going onto a reality tv show? My biggest advice would be to just understand it’s hard work! Things aren’t handed on a plate to you, and I think that’s the unfortunate stigma around going on reality tv, people think you’re a millionaire within a click of a finger! But success takes time within any career, on tv and off tv, you have to work hard!! We’ve all been lost this summer without the show, can we expect to see you on the reunion? At this moment you won’t be seeing me on the reunion, but I cannot wait to see all my Love Island friends on the show from my year but also people I have grown close to from precious years! What exciting projects do you have coming up that we can look forward to? So, I have a clothing edit coming out very soon with an amazing brand and also something else very very exciting is coming out! But you’ll find out very soon! Keep your eyes peeled!!

Teriyaki chicken sushi hand rolls Preparation time: 20 minutes, plus marinating and cooling Cooking time: 30 minutes Total time: 50 minutes, plus marinating and cooling Makes 8 rolls Ingredients 6 skinless chicken thigh fillets 5 tbsp teriyaki sauce 125g sushi rice, rinsed 2 tbsp sushi rice vinegar 4 sheets nori 1 Waitrose & Partners Extra Large Perfectly Ripe Avocado, halved and sliced into long strips 3 salad onions, halved and sliced into long strips 1 tsp toasted white or Cooks’ Ingredients Black Sesame Seeds, or a mix of both Method Marinate the chicken in the teriyaki sauce for at least 30 minutes (up to 24 hours). Put the rice in a pan and cook according to pack instructions. Take off the heat, set aside and cover for 10 minutes. Uncover, stir in the vinegar and cool to room temperature (or chill until ready to use). Preheat the grill to high. Put the chicken on a foil-lined baking sheet and pour over any excess marinade. Grill for 15 minutes, turning and basting every 5 minutes, until cooked through, the juices run clear and there is no pink meat. The fillets should be coated in a sticky sauce; set them aside to cool slightly (or chill until ready to use). To assemble, halve the nori sheets (to make 8 strips, each roughly 10cm x 20cm). Spread 1/8 of the sushi rice (about 50g) on the left half of one strip and arrange some sliced teriyaki chicken, avocado and salad onion on top. Sprinkle with a few sesame seeds, then roll up into a cone. Lightly wet the edge of the nori so it sticks together. Repeat to make 8 hand rolls. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi paste for dipping, if liked.

Cook’s tip If you’re short on time, use a 400g pack of cooked sushi rice instead of the rice and vinegar in step 1.

DRIZZLE CAKE This easy passion fruit drizzle cake makes a perfect bake for any occasion. Beautiful, light and moist texture and sweet and tangy flavours of passion fruit and lime create the most delicious combination.

Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus cooling Cooking time: 1 hour Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes, plus cooling Serves 10-12 Ingredients 200g unsalted butter, very soft, plus extra for greasing 250g Tate & Lyle White Caster Sugar 3 medium British Blacktail Free Range Eggs, at room temperature, beaten 250g self raising flour 1/4 tsp salt 160ml can coconut cream For the syrup & drizzle 3 passion fruit, halved 2 limes, 2 tbsp juice 75g Tate & Lyle White Caster Sugar Method Preheat the oven to 180ËšC, gas mark 4. Butter then line a 900g loaf tin with baking parchment. Using electric beaters, beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl until creamy and very pale. Add about 1 tbsp egg, beat again until fluffy; repeat until all of the egg has been incorporated. Sift in 1/2 the flour with the salt; fold in carefully with a spatula. Fold in the coconut cream until entirely combined, then the rest of the flour, to make a soft batter. Scrape into the tin, level the top and bake for 1 hour, until risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Cool in the tin on a rack, until barely warm. Sieve the passion fruit pulp over a bowl, pressing hard with a spatula to extract the juice. Rinse 2 tsp of the seeds; set aside. Mix the passion fruit juice (about 2 tbsp) with the lime juice. Poke holes all over the cake with a cocktail stick, then brush 1/2 the juice over the top. Add 75g sugar and the rinsed seeds to the remaining passion fruit juice (about 1 tbsp). Immediately spread over the cake. Allow to cool completely (overnight for maximum crunch) before serving.

TRAVEL

No place like

HOME

Thanks to lockdowns and travel restrictions, 2020 has become the year to holiday closer to home – and that shouldn’t feel like a compromise. There are countless reasons to stay in the UK. It might be small but, when it comes to amazing landscapes, world-class attractions and incredible history, the UK can’t be beaten. One of the great things about England is the diversity that we have. All across the country, it’s filled to the brim with some of the best places to visit, here’s your UK break bucket list for the second half of 2020.

1

CORNWALL

There’s myth and mystery, misty clifftops and sharp, rugged rocks rising out of restless waves, as well as peaceful coves, sleepy towns and vitamin D-soaked beaches packed out with surfers. Go in search of King Arthur at Tintagel’s romantic, clifftop ruin, watch a play with the Atlantic as the backdrop at the Minack Theatre (both currently require you to book in advance) or have a freshly cooked alfresco feast under the stars at The Hidden Hut, which has just reopened for the season.

2

2

CORFE CASTLE

People have lived in Corfe Castle for over 8,000 years! It’s authentic and natural, as if you’ve stepped back 1,000 years to an olde English world. Once here, take a stroll through the castle of Corfe, wander all the little boutiques and grab a yummy Sunday roast at Mortons House Restaurant. If trains are your thing, you can even take a historic train from Corfe Castle Station to Swanage.

3

YORKSHIRE

Visitors flock to Yorkshire because there is no place on earth like God’s Own County. The sheer beauty of the landscape, sometimes as unexpected as a dilapidated mill chimney stabbing up through a leaden sky, has inspired generations of painters: from John Atkinson Grimshaw’s moonscapes to the Victorian artists of the Staithes Group to David Hockney’s Yorkshire Wolds. It boasts three national parks, a wild and rugged coastline, and wonderful Victorian architecture, not least the preserved terraced streets and mills of the World Heritage Site of Saltaire.

4

COTSWOLDS

The glorious, honey-coloured towns and villages of the Cotswolds look as if they have strayed into the 21st century from another era. The area is characterised by gentle dynamism, with lively galleries, vibrant festivals and a liberal endowment of intriguing museums. Once you’re there, make sure to visit Bibury to see the gorgeous Arlington Row, pop into the Upper and Lower Slaughters (they’re far less gruesome than they sound), and head over to other spots like the Chipping Steps in Tetbury and Bourton-on-theWater, too.

5

LAKE DISTRICT

The Lake District is the UK’s newest UNESCO protected site. As you can probably tell from the name, the Lake District is filled with tranquil lakes, beautiful mountain ranges and a whole heap of tiny villages to explore. Swing by this year to spot rocky reflections in still lakes, attempt rhyming couplets in poet William Wordsworth’s 250th anniversary year, or step out high over Honister slate mine’s new Bridge Challenge, which opened this year.

6

BATH

Bath ticks pretty much all the boxes for a perfect short break. With sweeping, honeystone Georgian crescents and terraces spread over a green and hilly bowl, it’s a strong contender for England’s most beautiful small city. It has a fascinating and easily accessible history, from the Roman Baths to the life and times of one-time resident Jane Austen. Its state-ofthe-art Thermae Bath Spa complex, which opened in 2006, allows visitors the pleasing continuity of wallowing in the hot, mineralrich spring-waters in much the same way the Romans did 2,000 years ago.

If you’ve just finished a good series and need a new one to fill the void, Close Up is assembling a monthly list of the best TV shows currently available on the streaming service, from classics of yesteryear to the hottest new titles. Below, we’ve rounded up the best shows on Netflix right now, so you can binge-watch without having to hunt for the right title.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Superheroes tend to be loners, so it’s fun to see them in a family setting. But living with people who wear capes and save lives every two minutes is never going to be plain sailing. Ellen Page and Mary J Blige star in this fantasy series set in an alternate universe. Ellen plays Vanya, one of seven children adopted by a billionaire. Unlike her brothers and sisters – all of whom were born on the same day to mothers who didn’t know they were pregnant (a terrifying concept for all women to get their heads around!) – Vanya doesn’t have superpowers. She can only watch on as her estranged siblings get back together to try to solve the mystery of their foster father’s death. Oh, and they also plan to save the world while they’re at it.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN: FILTHY RICH This four-part documentary brings to life the sobering stories that made newspaper headlines across the world last year when financier Jeffrey Epstein died in prison while facing charges of sex trafficking. Using footage of Epstein being interviewed for an earlier charge alongside comments from prosecutors, associates and investigators, plus film of Epstein’s homes, director Lisa Bryant’s documentary is a fascinating and horrifying look at how one man escaped justice for decades, possibly with the help of wealthy connections – and one that rightfully prioritises the survivors over the perpetrator.

OZARK The story centres around Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney), daughter Charlotte (Sophia Hublitz) and son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) as they are forced to go on the run from Chicago to the Ozark lakes in Missouri after Marty’s moneylaundering operation for a drug gang goes wrong and their lives are in imminent danger. But things just get more complicated once they start afresh in the Ozarks, because not only are they instantly embroiled in a strange and brutal world they don’t understand – but they quickly learn that your problems have a habit of catching up with you and that secrets are harder than you think to keep. Three seasons of this excellent show are available on Netflix now. You’ll soon get used to seeing the world with a blueish-grey tint…

SNOWPIERCER

SELLING SUNSET

The series introduces us to Andre Layton (Diggs), a stoic passenger living in the ‘tail’ section of Snowpiercer – a huge train carrying the last remaining survivors of a climate catastrophe around a permanently frozen Earth. The tail’s inhabitants have often been reduced to cannibalism as a consequence of the train’s rigid class structure and the vast inequality inherent in that system and so when Layton is asked by those in the more privileged sections to use his detective skills to help solve a mystery further up the train, he is hardly in a position to refuse. What follows is a twisting and turning adventure that takes us to the different sections of the train and explores issues of class and revolution.

Reality series don’t get much more glamorous – or dramatic – than Selling Sunset which follows a group of estate agents working for the The Oppenheim Group as they sell some of the most opulent houses in Los Angeles. A third series of the show has recently been added to the streaming platform – and each new season only seems to ramp up the drama even further, as the agents experience weddings, divorces and everything in between. So if you’re into drama, real estate and just the glamorous world of LA, then this could be the perfect show for you – sit back and enjoy the pure escapism as you watch the cast continue to share the ups and downs of their personal and professional lives.

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

OUR PLANET

One of the most-watched shows on Netflix right now is its revamp of iconic American documentary series Unsolved Mysteries, which takes a look at paranormal phenomena and cold cases. Over 20 years since the show wrapped up NBC and CBS, 12 brand-new episodes have been made featuring unexplained events from all over the world. The attraction of this series lies in the fact that as the facts of the cases are presented, it is left up to the audience at home to play amateur detective and theorise whodunnit, why and how. So not only is it a thrilling watch, but it might just perform a public service, too.

From the makers of landmark series Planet Earth and Blue Planet comes a ground-breaking look at the world we live in: the problems the natural world faces, the solutions to fix those issues, and examples of complete rehabilitation. Narrated by veteran natural historian and global treasure David Attenborough, this fascinating series take viewers on a journey through different biological realms, from the deepest oceans and the wildebeest migrations in Africa to the wolves living in Chernobyl’s forests.

Home-Made Wills may save a few pounds BUT COULD STORE UP TROUBLE FOR THE FUTURE By Inderjit Ahitan

Home-made wills may save you a few pounds in the short term, but dispensing with legal advice greatly increases the risk of painful disputes arising after you are gone. That was certainly so in the case of a desperately ill man who left the whole of his substantial estate to a friend, thus cutting out his brother and sister. The man suffered from long-standing bipolar disorder and made his will after he was admitted to hospital suffering from the brain tumour that led to his death. The short and informal document, which was made without the benefit of legal advice, was witnessed by two of his friends and left his estate to another. Had he died without making a will, his estate would have passed to his siblings, who were estranged from him and had no contact with him until shortly before his death. In challenging the validity of the will, the siblings denied that the signature it bore was their brother’s. They also asserted that he did not have the mental capacity to make a valid will and that he lacked knowledge and approval of its contents. They pointed out that he was suffering from cortical blindness due to his illness and questioned whether the will had been read to him. He was said to have repeatedly told his brother that he had made no will and had no intention of doing so. Following a preliminary hearing, the High Court noted that the siblings had not formally alleged that the circumstances of the will’s execution were such as to arouse suspicion, nor was it claimed that the document was the product of a conspiracy or that the signature was a forgery.

The Court, however, ordered the witnesses to the will to disclose documents for use in the proceedings, including any written communications they had had with the man around the time of his death. In ruling that such disclosure was necessary to dispose fairly of the case, the Court noted, amongst other things, that documents bearing the man’s signature were likely to assist handwriting experts in assessing the authenticity of the signature on the will.
