EDITOR'S LETTER

From the

EDITOR

Cover Interview Page 9

I have never felt the full force of imposter syndrome until this moment. As I write this, I am sitting in our North London office. Magazines towering on my desk and the office team chat and laugh around me. I guess I’m the “boss” now? But the truth is I still feel like the 17-year-old who visited this very magazine on work experience over 8 years ago. When it was my turn to sit in the editors chair and officially take over, there was no rush of excitement, I felt like a total failure. Why? Because I suddenly panicked that I would never be good enough to do this job. Should I have better hair? Should I have more fashionable clothes? Should I know how to do winged eyeliner by this point in my life? Am I too young? And shouldn’t I be out drinking champagne in some stylish bar, or shouting at someone about florals for spring not being original, instead of sitting at my desk finishing a box of biscuits.

Beauty Page 20

Fashion Page 16

For the uninitiated, this feeling is imposter syndrome. Thankfully, I was comforted by two things. Firstly, my friends and family. But secondly, and most importantly, if there’s one brand where being a perfectly imperfect person, and revelling in the brilliance and beauty of that, is not only OK but championed, it’s Close Up. One thing this magazine will never do is tell you that who you are is wrong, what you feel isn’t important or that the way you look isn’t good enough. There are plenty of things in life making us feel that way already. So, if you’ve woken up with a hangover and you’re late for work, we’ll help you nail it (p20). If your little one is taking their next steps into the education world, we’ll give you the information you need (p31). Or, if your current life goal is just choosing which TV show is worth your weekend binge-watch time, we’ve got that covered, too (p60). We are all works in progress, this magazine included, and we shouldn’t be ashamed of that. You do you, because that’s all you should ever be and it is enough. So don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

COVER INTERVIEW

Sophie

TURNER “I grew up in the spotlight from the age of 13 to 21, which is generally the most turbulent time for every girl”

Close Up Magazine // 9

COVER INTERVIEW

English actress Sophie Turner, newly married to pop star Joe Jonas, has weathered a decade of untold savagery, destruction, and bloody battles as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. Filming the last few episodes was an emotional roller coaster. “It was very emotional. I was lucky that on my last day I was surrounded by all of the cast members. It had been nearly a decade for me. The majority of my life. I’m still very much processing it. I still don’t accept that it’s done. I don’t think I will [absorb it all] until it’s next year and I’m not back in Belfast with my [GoT] family.” Speaking in an interview Sophie expressed her high-running emotions throughout filming of the last episode, “Unfortunately, most of us had different last days on the set, so there was no big party or anything. But I still remember my last scene in Spain. We shot them for five bloody hard days – and in the end I just wanted to get away. I wasn’t sad or sentimental, just exhausted. But then David and Dan, the creators of the series, came to me with the whole team. I got a farewell gift with a little personal message, and they delivered a speech. After that I was an emotional wreck for hours, because of course all the emotions caught up with me.” When Sophie Turner made her debut as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, it was in an array of pale, flowing gowns that would not look out of place on a Disney princess. But as Sansa matured, so did her wardrobe; by the end of the series, her more mature, sensible looks were more befitting of a warrior in training. At the same time, Turner’s style transformed in real life too. In the years after she first made her mark on Hollywood, at 13, Turner could most often be found on the red carpet in either a traditionally

feminine dress in a muted colour or a take on the LBD. “I grew up in the spotlight from the age of 13 to 21, which is generally the most turbulent time for every girl. Those are the years that are difficult for us even if you’re leading a normal life. You feel insecure and experience a lot of self-doubts. It wasn’t easy at times for me.” “When you’re starting your career at a young age, you’re forced to grow up much faster. Also, playing a character like Sansa and going through all the things she has had to endure, the violence and everything, toughens you up. In the last few seasons she began to understand the rules of the game and to take control of her life, using her understanding of politics to achieve what others do with weapons” Thanks in part to a relationship with Louis Vuitton, though, the now 23-year-old actress has since adopted a much edgier look, from the casual Dickies T-shirt and red leather pants that she wore to the afterparty of a Thrones premiere to one of the many daring ensembles she wore while on the X-Men: Dark Phoenix press tour with her newfound partner in couture, Jessica Chastain. Turner’s taste in accessories has certainly evolved, too: These days, she can almost always be found with arm candy in the form of her husband, Joe Jonas, and/or one of her most prized possessions—a Juul. Sophie married Joe Jonas (for the second time) this year in a star-studded ceremony in France. By her side as one of her maid of honours was 22-year-old Maisie who played her on-screen sister Arya in the HBO series. In an interview, Sophie said: ‘Maisie has been the most wonderful friend to me over the years. We grew up together on Game of Thrones’ and we have shared so many things and talked about everything.’ The Game of Thrones star met Jonas when the superstar singer slid into her DMs—making for a thoroughly modern meet-cute. “We had a lot of mutual friends, and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time,” Sophie told Harper’s Bazaar. “We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue.” His move worked, and news broke about the couple’s relationship in December of 2016. By October of 2017, they were engaged. Turner was 21 years old. She told Rolling Stone: “I think once you’ve found the right person, you just know. I feel like I’m much older a soul than I am in age.”

COVER INTERVIEW

“ I THINK ONCE YOU’VE

FOUND THE RIGHT PERSON, YOU JUST KNOW.

This year saw the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix starring Turner in the lead role. It’s her second in the series, following her debut as Jean Grey in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Dark Phoenix also puts Turner’s Grey more front and centre, revolving around the telekinetic mutant as she becomes dangerously powerful and transforms into the titular Dark Phoenix. One pivotal moment sees Jean Grey (Turner) lose control of her Phoenix Force and kill Raven aka Mystique (Lawrence) in the heat of battle. During the cast’s chat with Kimmel, Jennifer Lawrence hilariously let the world in on why Turner got emotional filming the sequence. “I teared up a little bit watching Sophie in that scene, her reaction to my death was so raw and real,” Lawrence explained. “It was so honest and real, and it’s because she really was crying because her dialect coach, right before the take, took her [vape pen] Juul away. She started genuinely tearing up. It was like the performance of the year. It was amazing.” Turner then joked that the key to get an emotional reaction to her on set is to take away her vape pen at any given moment. “It’s how to act,” Turner joked. “You take it away and then you give it back and that’s happy and sad.”

1

Sensitivity to hot and cold is an early indicator of a problem. It is fairly normal to be sensitive to cold, but if you experience pain with hot food or drink, it could be a warning sign of exposed nerves and early decay.

2

A build-up of plaque on the surface of teeth can lead to visible cracks and holes where the enamel has worn away. Help prevent this by brushing twice a day, flossing regularly and rinsing with mouthwash. If the problem persists, see your dentist who will probably arrange a simple filling.

3

If you start to experience sudden, sharp pains in your tooth or prolonged toothache, this could mean that one or multiple teeth have started to decay and need urgent treatment.

4

Spots on the teeth, typically close the gumline are one of the first signs of decay. They can range from white to black in colour and, if still visible after brushing, could indicate that your enamel has been affected.

5

If biting or chewing causes discomfort or pain, it is very likely that tooth decay has spread. Be careful to avoid sugar altogether, as the acids in this will cause the decay to worsen much faster.

6

When decay causes holes in the teeth, the gums will try to regenerate and grow into the space. The ‘new’ gums will be very sensitive and likely bleed when you brush – a strong indicator of decay.

7

Once the infection reaches the pulp (centre) of the tooth, it can cause the tissue and bones surrounding it to move, generating puss and causing the area, particularly the gums, to swell which can be very painful. If you notice swelling, visit your dentist asap!

Top Tips

1 2

Be smart with your diet Healthy hair doesn’t just depend on good haircare, it also requires care from the inside, so a well-balanced diet is essential. Wear a hat We put sunscreen on to protect skin, but we always forget about the scalp. Sunburn not only causes the skin to flake, it can also damage the hair.

3

Give yourself a massage This stimulates the hair follicles and will encourage hair growth.

4

Skip the wash Don’t wash your hair every day, water has a higher PH level and can strip the natural oils off your hair!

5

Prevent heat damage Use protection to stop your hair drying out!

INTERVIEW

GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE Written interview with Oliver Polge perfumer-creator for the House of Chanel

How has this bouquet of white flowers evolved from your initial score to the new version? In the GABRIELLE CHANEL Eau de Parfum, sparkling orange blossom already brought freshness, ylang-ylang radiance and femininity, jasmine intensity and tuberose creaminess. Retaining this same combination, GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE bestows a majestic role on tuberose, which is given a stronger presence and upheld by creamier notes to become more enveloping. Tuberose plays a key note and the headier trail sings in tune with greater intensity.

“ Floral. Solar.

Voluptuous.

Velvety. Sensual.

What makes Grasse tuberose, exclusive to CHANEL, so unique?

How did the idea for GABRIELLE CHANEL come to you? My first big fragrance for CHANEL was this new women’s fragrance, since the House only launches one every ten to fifteen years or so. And while flowers already play a major role in the history of CHANEL Fragrances, especially white flowers and more specifically jasmine, there wasn’t a truly floral fragrance in our repertoire. It was still relatively unexplored territory, with the exception of LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL BEIGE and GARDÉNIA, or N°5—which is such a distinctive floral-aldehydic fragrance with a highly marked structure. In previous fragrances, and particularly those by Ernest Beaux, a combination of white flowers (jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange blossom) was repeated like a chorus. Since this bouquet reflected the tastes of Gabrielle Chanel, it could capture something of her personality. This idea of a largely floral composition, in which all of the other components merely serve a supportive function, really struck me, even though it’s rather tricky.

24 // Close Up Magazine

The French Riviera is an extraordinary place that combines a temperate climate, the perfect amount of sun and very fertile soil. Just prior to my arrival, in 2011, CHANEL offered to buy the bulbs from the last tuberose producer in Grasse and replant them in a 2.5-hectare field to preserve the cultivation of the flower. Harvesting is done daily from late August to early November. We have thus developed our own quality of tuberose in close collaboration with the Mul family. The special extraction process has been honed over the years, more cleanly capturing the scent of the flower’s petal, as if smelled in an open field and divested of its waxy, animal, leather and green facets. Picked in the morning, it is brighter and more radiant. GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE was an opportunity to give it a majestic role. Can you explain this partnership with the Mul family in a little more detail? Working in partnership with CHANEL for 32 years, but with ties to the House and my father Jacques Polge for much longer than that, this family based in Pégomas shares all of their agricultural knowledge with me. Our partnership provides a guarantee of the olfactory quality and the quantity of flowers required for the production of certain CHANEL fragrances, as well as perfect control over the process from flower to fragrance.

Does the idea of a soliflore fragrance appeal to you? Tuberose is not an easy flower. It has to be tamed. I am not a fan of the famed tuberose fragrances in perfumery. These soliflores overpower the personality and leave little room to the imagination. A CHANEL tuberose could not be so figurative, caricatured or showy. By divesting it of its more difficult facets, spreading it out and softening it with other flowers (jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang), and accompanying it with a more sensual trail, we find that little abstract melody so dear to CHANEL. What developments have you brought to the original fragrance? GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE retains the radiant facet of the original score, but carries it into a creamier and more enveloping world. The top notes have been given a softer whisper of citrus to make way for a sweet, fruity, tangy burst of red berries. Tuberose conveys all the density of its velvety petals, and the trail has been intensified, with more pronounced sandalwood, musk and vanilla, and no doubt more sensuality. How can one choose between them? GABRIELLE CHANEL Eau de Parfum is airy, as if dazzled by light, while GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE is more opulent, as if plunged into a nectar of flowers and bathed in a warmer light. Five words to describe GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE? Floral. Solar. Voluptuous. Velvety. Sensual. How do you imagine the woman who wears it? Even though there is something “pastel about this floral expression, the white flower loses nothing of its bold personality. In this respect, GABRIELLE CHANEL ESSENCE is a fragrance for the self-confident woman.

Luisa

ZISSMAN This year, the Magnolia Cup supported Wellbeing of Women which is Britain’s leading charity funding pioneering medical research across the whole spectrum of women’s reproductive and gynaecological health. From ovarian cancer to endometriosis, premature birth, miscarriage and stillbirth, the charity is dedicated to finding new cures and treatments in order to help save the lives of women and ensure babies have the best possible start in life.

Hi Luisa! We we’re so excited to hear your support towards Wellbeing of Women at the 2019 Magnolia Cup charity race, can you tell us about your experience? Thank you, it’s been a really great experience. The magnolia cup is amazing. Firstly it raises huge amounts of money for the chosen charity - this year it’s the Wellbeing Of Women which is the UK’s leading women’s reproductive and gynaecological health charity dedicated to saving and changing lives through research. Secondly it also makes racing more mainstream as we are all just normal ladies having a go at racing. Thirdly it’s a really incredible personal experience so I was thrilled to be asked to take part. What sort of training did you have to endure in the build-up to the race? Training was intense! Riding out 4-5 times a week, 4 PT sessions a week and Pilates classes. I also had a jockey coach who would teach me techniques on mechanical horses.

Entrepreneur and former The Apprentice star Luisa Zissman was one of those included in the star-studded line up competing in the prestigious amateur rider’s charity race. Here, we chat with Luisa on passing an Army-style fitness assessment in the build-up, and her podcast ‘Loose Lips’ alongside Anna Williamson. Loose Lips will talk alongside special guests, debate the last week in the life of Women; from relationships, celebrities and parenting to careers, body image, and health.

Did you have any input towards your outfit designed by Mary Katrantzou? None at all, they were a total surprise, I loved mine! She’s a very talented designer.

What has been your favourite subject to date on your podcast ‘Loose Lips’? Ohhhh this is tricky as I love our chats on there. Anna and I had a pretty good debate about obesity and plus size models. It was about how plus size models who are considered clinically obese are so celebrated but I don’t think they should be. At the time the NHS were running a campaign about obesity and it being the second biggest cause of cancer after smoking. Anna is very pro positive body image as am I, but not to the extent of your health. It was a bit fiery! As much as we love hearing you on ‘Loose Lips’, will we be seeing you on our screens any time soon? I’ve no TV plans coming up but if the right thing came along I would love to be back on screen. I’d be really keen to put my body to the test again in a show like ‘Bear Grylls: The Island’ or ‘Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins’ - I think I could give the other celebs a run for their money, I’m very competitive!

Luisa Zissman trained to be a jockey as part of the Magnolia Cup Charity Race which took place at Goodwood raising funds for the Wellbeing of Woman charity (www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk)

Originally favoured by Audrey Hepburn and Jane Birkin, the nautical basket bag is firmly back in the fashion ranks. Think ruffled rattan clutches, embellished baskets and fringed totes (as per the Jacquemus dream shown here on Dua Lipa). The basket bag was a Spring/Summer stable that is transferring with ease into the cooler days of Autumn, thanks to its multiple uses (and sizes). From the mini tote, to the giant bucket there really is something for everyone. Not sure how to work it? Wear with a simple white tee and jeans for a laid back LA girl look, or do like @dualipa Dua and pair with a crisp shirt dress to take you effortlessly from desk to dinner. Whether you’re jetting around town throwing in your phone, cash and lipstick, or filling it to the brim on holiday with sun cream, snacks and magazines, this is one bag you need in your life.

OLD-SCHOOL COOL It’s official – scrunchies have made a comeback (yes, seriously). The simple hair tie that was once restricted to bedroom and bathroom is now popping up all over our feeds, and for good reason! Not only do they give a nod to the super on-trend 90s vibe, they are softer on your hair than conventional hair ties, and help to reduce knotting and pulling. Not to mention how cute they look when being used to sweep up a messy bun, demonstrated perfectly here by Hailey Bieber. These days the previously neglected and ridiculed scrunchie has had a make-over- it @haileybieber isn’t just a tie, it’s an accessory. From simple jewel toned velvet, to bow and embellishment detailing, there’s something to suit all. So next time you are having a bad hair day look no further than the unassuming scrunchie to turn your bland ponytail into a high swept crowning glory. The long debate is over, scrunchies are definitely “in”!

Choosing the right school for your daughter This is one of the most significant decisions that you will make for your daughter. We invite you to visit PGHS so that we can answer your questions and you can see for yourself whether we provide the best fit for your daughter.

After having a tour of PGHS we knew straight away that this school was perfect for our daughter. The teachers we met were outstanding, they established a confidence in me that my daughter would be both well cared for and well educated. At PGHS, we welcome girls who have the desire and potential to learn in our calm, aspirational and supportive school.

PGHS girls are articulate, engaging and knowledgeable. They speak passionately about their school for which they are excellent ambassadors.

We provide an inspiring and challenging environment through which all pupils are given opportunities to be inquisitive, independent and develop a lifelong love of learning.

The quality of provision is outstanding. Excellent classroom practice ensures that all children learn rapidly, thrive and succeed. At PGHS, small class sizes are the norm and all pupils are known as individuals. This enables staff to deliver the curriculum and pastoral care in a personalised way.

I liked the small setting, just for girls, the small class size and felt that the academic standard was strong and would help our daughters achieve their full potential. Girls are encouraged to achieve their full academic potential and, through a rich and varied extra-curricular provision, discover who they are.

The school raises confidence and instils the belief that they can do anything if they are willing to put in the effort. Be inquisitive and come along to our Open Morning on Saturday 12th October 2019 to learn more about what PGHS can offer your daughter.

PGHS is a fabulous school that is going from strength to strength.

EDUCATION

FOREST SCHOOL About Forest School Forest is a well-rounded, happy, busy school offering excellent academic provision and a full range of co-curricular opportunities, with almost 1400 boys and girls from 4 – 18. We believe that our combination of single-sex and mixed educational opportunities – the diamond structure – gives our pupils the best of all worlds. They thrive on it. Within the Prep School and Senior School, the Form and House system means that pupils are looked after in small units of care. In the Pre-Prep (4 – 7) and Sixth Form (16 – 18), boys and girls are taught together, but between the ages of 7 and 16 pupils are taught in separate classes, to maximise the benefits of single-sex teaching for children of that age. Life is not a single-sex environment, however, and a child’s social development involves learning to form relationships with a wide range of people. This is where Forest’s diamond structure comes into its own. Outside the classroom, for example, boys and girls of all ages mix in a wide range of co-curricular activities; brothers and sisters share the same school in a way that single-sex teaching would otherwise preclude. We benefit from a tremendous location, a city school with thirty acres of grounds surrounded by ancient forest here on the very edge of London, all creating a wonderfully diverse community for our pupils that we are very proud of.

BLOG

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina One of the most daunting things I experienced this summer travelling with a toddler. I’m not the best traveller in general, so my anxiety levels since having Rico tripled when it came to leaving the country (and even my house at times). There’s so much to think about - how many nappies do I pack? How much clothes does he need? What if I don’t pack enough milk? What if I forget him on the beach? What if a tropical new breed of animal surface and swoop down from the heavens and fly away with him in the distance? (To name a few). The trip I just got back from was Rico’s 3rd venture out in the big bad world; and I can definitely say this was the most challenging yet. I thought it would get easier the older he got - but even though he’s getting smarter, funnier and cuter as the months roll on, he also is way more aware of his surroundings and is far too busy for my liking; especially when you’ve had 2 hours sleep and would like nothing more than a quiet Eurostar ride, along with the hundreds of other passengers at 6.37am. I have realised though; the more I travel, the easier it will get, not because Rico’s tantrums when he can’t run up and down the aisle are any less, but because I’ve learnt some tips and tricks to help make my mental state that little calmer. So as a mother, what do you do when you learn something that could benefit your fellow suffering parents - share it of course! So here’s my top tips for travelling with your toddler! 1. Pack smart – There’s no point in packing things that you can buy at your destination. When it comes to things like nappies and wipes – I would pack enough for what you need to travel with and buy some from the local supermarket when you get there. Save the space they would have taken up for things like 1039038749 changes of clothing! This months business in the spotlight is Serenity London, an Events & Wedding Coordinator. The team behind Serenity London have 12 years experience in Events, PR & Hospitality and offer their expertise to both Corporate & Private clients. They pride themselves on creating unique experiences for each client & 2020 will see SL bringing more clients to destination locations as they have fantastic relationships with venues & hotels internationally & recognised by all IATA members.

2. Entertainment - whatever it takes, make sure your child has enough entertainment. Rico’s Godmother bought him a kindle fire for children and it’s the best thing he’s ever got! Download some favourite shows before you set off that don’t need Wifi, some games, a favourite toy or a good old fashioned colouring book and pens to keep them still and occupied (even if it is for only 10 mins at a time!) 3. Ignore the onlookers - I genuinely think I spent more time worrying about Rico being “that child on the flight that cried the whole way” more than anything when flying. Not because I can’t handle the crying - but because of what everyone else would think. If they cry, they cry, focus on what it takes for them to be comforted rather than worrying about what Sally and George think in seats 26A and 26B. 4. Plan and revise your journey – make sure you know how long your in the airport/station for, how long taxi journeys are, time in the sky etc. This will help you to get a handle on things like making sure they have their food/snacks/naps at good times to avoid any more crankiness than normal! 5. And last but not least - if all the above fail, just leave them at home with their grandparents and enjoy your holiday with peace and quiet! They won’t remember it anyway right? Ha - just joking! (Or am I?) Hope you all enjoyed your summer guys,

FILM INTERVIEW

A whole NEW WORLD Naomi Scott on her excitement at playing a Disney Princess with a modern twist in Aladdin

London born actor Naomi Scott was not a household name before this year, appearing in some British television series and a prominent role in last year’s Power Ranger film. However, a bit of Disney magic has changed all that for the actor.

The 26-year-old shot to stardom as Princess Jasmine in Guy Ritchie’s remake of Disney’s Aladdin, out on DVD and Digital this month. Based on the 1992 animated film, Scott has received widespread praise for her updated portrayal of Jasmine. In this film, the princess is a politically minded character who seems destined to rule her kingdom one day, far more than a mere damsel in distress. She joins a star-studded cast that includes Mena Massoud in the title role, and Will Smith taking over from the late, great Robin Williams as Genie. Speaking at a press conference for the film, Scott discussed why this new vision of the role fit so well into the movie. “Okay. Well, first of all, I think it’s a wonderful thing when you have a vision for a character or you think oh, I would love to see Disney do this with this character and it aligns with the people involved. It aligns with Guy and our producers” she explains.

Speechless, a powerful ballad sung by Scott, which outlines Jasmine’s frustration at not being able to have a voice as a woman in a male-dominated society. It’s a dream for many actors to sing in a Disney movie, but to get to sing something so meaningful meant the world to Scott. “Yeah, oh gosh, where do I start?” she beams. “So Speechless, written by this guy over here, Alan Menken, Pasek, and Paul. Incredible writers. So the fact that they wrote a song and I get to sing it, first of all, I was like wow. That’s already surreal. But also then when I heard it and just the words and the lyrics and how timely it was, the message behind the song and the idea of not going speechless, that everyone has a voice, doesn’t matter who you are, doesn’t matter what you look like, doesn’t matter what your gender, your voice matters. And speaking out against injustice matters. Not just standing by and being a spectator. So yeah. Like that day was very emotional”.

has a voice, doesn’t matter who you “...are,everyone doesn’t matter what you look like, doesn’t

matter what your gender, your voice matters.

“For me, I really think it was a natural progression. Guy said something which I thought was really great. He was talking about equality of challenge as well. So the idea, I’m stealing your thing now. The idea that Jasmine needed even more of a challenge in this movie as well. As I said, it’s a natural progression. The fact that she wants to become the leader”.

However, the actor didn’t shy away from the emotions involved. “It was really emotional because I wanted it to feel raw” she says. “And I wanted it to feel like it’s what she’s going through in that moment. And we did some of it live as well which was a different type of challenge. And yeah, you know, it’s out there. The song is for me, it’s like, it’s the world’s song. Like whatever it will be, it will be”.

Rather than having equality for equality’s sake, it was important for the star that her expanded role make sense within the context of the story. “I kind of just want people to walk out and go, oh yeah, that makes sense, right?” she says. “She should be the leader. And as opposed to, it’s not this thing that’s been shoe horned in. It just makes sense. And she’s a human. For me as an actor, my main thing is, how do I humanize her, how do I give her depth. So those things just came naturally”.

What will be for Scott is a bright future ahead, having just wrapped the new remake of Charlie’s Angels opposite Kristen Stewart and Ella Balinska. As for Aladdin, the updated film has made over $1billion globally at the box office, and changed the minds of many who were sceptical that the classic cartoon could be remade at all. For Scott, public reaction is something she knows she is not in control of, but instead emphasises the message her performance is trying to convey. Aladdin “Whatever people take from it, they is released on all will take” she says. “I’m just obviously Home Entertainment very blessed to be the person to kind Platforms on 23rd of embody it in the movie”. September

The film features some new songs as well as the old classics such as A Friend Like Me and A Whole New World. The biggest among the new entries is

FILM INTERVIEW

Scarlett JOHANSSON The Oscar nominee on the traumatic climax to the Avengers Infinity Saga.

In movie terms, 2019 will be remembered as the year of Endgame. The final part of the Avengers Infinity Saga saw the Marvel heroes, including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, face off against Thanos for the future of the planet. For the comic book franchise, it was the scintillating climax of 11 years of universe building. For Johansson, this was an opportunity to reflect on her journey with the character, and how she has changed in the nine years since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. So what brought about the change?

The movies have grown in reaction to that fan encouragement

Johansson believes it’s all thanks to the fans. “The movies have grown in reaction to that fan encouragement” she says at a press conference for the film. “The character started as a sexy secretary with a skill set on the side. The next time we saw her in Avengers she was one of the boys, and that made sense then, but I think as the fans and the audiences have pushed Marvel and all the studios and filmmakers to throw up on the screen what’s going on in the zeitgeist, and wanting to see diverse films and casts, I think the character has grown in reaction to that”.

From being the only female member of The Avengers, the actor recalls how special it was to greet other women into the fold. “I remember when Lizzie (Olsen) signed on, and Cobie (Smulders) was there, we were just clinging to each other. I felt like I had been in this testosterone-fest for such a long time, it was so nice to see other female cast members, and then with Brie (Larson) coming on, and Karen (Gillan), and Danai (Gurira), I feel like I’m among so many wonderful actors.” Those who have seen the film – and let’s face it, having made Avengers a record $2.7billion at the box office, who hasn’t? - will be Endgame is surprised to learn that this actually isn’t the last time we released on all will see Black Widow. Johansson has signed on to make Home Entertainment a prequel movie, due to be released in May 2020. There platforms on is, however, one battle that rages on within the Marvel September 2nd. Universe – Bearded Captain America, or Clean Shaven Captain America? “With a beard!” she says, with a chuckle.

FILM INTERVIEW

Aaron

TAYLOR-JOHNSON The former Kick-Ass star on his energetic new drama.

Still only 29, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has packed a lot into the decade since his breakthrough playing John Lennon in the drama Nowhere Boy. He starred in the hit action film KickAss, fought Godzilla, joined The Avengers, and worked with fashion icon Tom Ford on the drama Nocturnal Animals.

One thing we enjoy “doing is playing with that otherworldiness, that physicality, that surrealism.

This month, however, he stars in a different kind of role in A Million Little Pieces. Based on the book by James Frey, he plays a man who is forcibly checked into a rehab facility. Once in there, fellow patients begin to turn his life around. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Aaron’s wife, with whom he also wrote the script. “Yeah it was great” he says of working with his partner at a Q&A for the film.“ I mean, it felt very natural as well, considering Sam already had a very strong idea for what she wanted to do visually. I think cinema is a visual medium, so when you have the director already going ‘I want to shoot it like this...’, it was just a matter of writing it and putting it down on paper. We needed to be bold and decide that the book in itself is a brilliant read and a fantastic story. You never want to be comparing with that, we wanted to have an interpretation of what (the book) is and bring it to life in a whole other medium”. Many of the film’s sequences, particularly ones involving his character’s drug use, use dance and physical storytelling to convey what he is going through. It’s a risky choice, but one that the star believes paid off. “Sam and I have done a lot of things together” he says. “We met on the set of our first movie, Nowhere Boy, and since then we’ve done a few music videos, art videos, things like that. One thing we enjoy doing is playing with that otherworldiness, that physicality, that surrealism. We did an REM video where I was dancing down the street, and it was very liberating and wild and unapologetic. Sam really wanted to apply that to this”. It was a daunting challenge for the actor, but one that paid off. “I kind of had a hard time figuring out how that would translate” he admits, “but we made it work, and it made it more ‘our movie’”.

VEGAN Tuck into a satisfying bowl of vegan pasta. These recipes for a yummy ravioli soup and sausage pasta are dairy-free, meat-free and totally delicious.

Vegan sausage pasta A quick and simple vegan dish. Cherry tomatoes are roasted with garlic just until they pop and blister, for a lovely intensified tomato flavour that’s lighter and fresher-tasting than a classic tomato sauce. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Total time: 30 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 400g cherry tomatoes 4 garlic cloves, sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 300g pack Linda McCartney’s 6 Vegetarian Sausages 2 courgettes, trimmed and sliced Pinch salt 300g elicoidali pasta tubes Handful basil leaves Method Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Toss the tomatoes, garlic and 2 tbsp oil in a roasting tin; season. Remove the packaging and film from the sausages but leave in the foil tray. Put the roasting tin and foil tray in the oven for 15 minutes, giving each one a toss halfway through. Heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the courgettes with the pinch of salt for about 8 minutes, turning regularly until golden. In a separate pan of boiling water, simmer the pasta for 10-12 minutes then drain, reserving a cup of pasta water. Remove the courgettes from the frying pan and set aside on a plate. Slice the sausages and add to the pan, frying for a couple of minutes, then tip in the pasta, tomatoes, any roasting juices, 2-3 tbsp pasta water and the courgettes. Toss together briefly and serve scattered with basil leaves.

FOOD

Vegan tomato soup with spinach ravioli Ravioli in soup? Trust us, it works. Roasting the tomatoes enhances their sweetness and adds a beautiful depth to the soup, and butter beans give the soup a lovely, creamy texture without having to add any dairy. Even nonvegan will want a taste of this. Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus cooling Cooking time: 45 minutes Total time: 1 hour, plus cooling Serves 6 Ingredients 2 x 300g packs Waitrose 1 Red Choice Tomatoes, halved 3 medium leeks, trimmed and roughly chopped 5 garlic cloves, peeled and halved 4 thyme sprigs 2 tbsp olive oil 400g can butter beans, rinsed and drained 500ml Cooks’ Ingredients Fresh Vegetable Stock 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 250g pack Waitrose & Partners Vegan Spinach Ravioli Handful basil leaves Method Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Put the tomatoes, along with any vines (for extra flavour), in a large roasting tray. Add the leeks, garlic and thyme; drizzle over the olive oil and season. Roast for 25 minutes, then add the butter beans, stock and 250ml water to the tray; return to the oven for another 15 minutes. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Remove and discard any woody thyme sprigs and tomato vines from the tray, then tip the contents into a large blender with 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil. Whizz until smooth, loosening with more water if needed and adjusting the seasoning (you may need to add a pinch of sugar or honey, too). Cook the ravioli according to pack instructions, then drain and toss with the remaining 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil. Reheat the soup if necessary and divide between bowls. Top each bowl with a few ravioli and basil leaves.

FILM REVIEW

NEW IN THE MOVIES by James Luxford Sick of superheroes? Fed up of Fast and Furious? This month we look at films that are a little bit more cerebral, reviewing the latest dramas and comedies, plus previewing the new IT and a return to Downton Abbey! Enjoy!

THE SOUVENIR Out Now

Tilda Swinton’s daughter Honor Swinton Byrne stars in this engrossing story of a young film student called Julie who falls for a charming older man (Tom Burke) who she slowly realises she can’t trust. An intense, well-acted drama that unveils a new star in Swinton Byrne, with superb support by Burke and Tilda Swinton as Julie’s on-screen mother, Rosalind. A terrific film from director Joanna Hogg, who with this marks herself as one of Britain’s most exciting talents behind the camera.

HHHHH NIGHT HUNTER 13th September

Having left Superman for good, and before he appears as The Witcher for Netflix, Henry Cavill stars in this gritty thriller as a detective on the tail of a criminal with a history of female abductions. Also caught up in the case is a vigilante (Sir Ben Kingsley) who traps serial molesters and doles out his own justice. An all-star cast that also includes Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) can’t untangle this complicated crime drama, which could have benefited from leaving out a few twists and turns.

HHHHH THE KITCHEN 20th September

When three mobster husbands are sent to prison, their wives (Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish) take over their business and find they have a knack for organised crime. The biggest crime committed on screen is taking three very talented actors and putting them in a film that gives them nothing of interest to do. A flat script and nonsense twists make you wish you were in prison rather than the cinema. A surprising disaster given the talent involved.

HHHHH THE FAREWELL 20th September

A Chinese family based in America decide to quickly arrange a wedding in their home country in order to give everyone the chance to say goodbye to their dying grandmother, who doesn’t know she’s dying! A gorgeous, tender film starring the brilliant Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians), who gives a heart-breaking performance as the daughter unsure if this scheme is the right thing to do. A wonderful weepie for everyone who cherishes the importance of family.

HOTEL MUMBAI 27th September

Dev Patel, Jason Isaacs, and Armie Hammer all star in this dramatisation of the real life 2008 siege of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai by Islamic terrorists. The talented cast make a gritty, realistic re-enactment of those horrific events. In fact, at points it feels too realistic, bordering on exploitative as we watch quite graphic scenes that will be upsetting for many viewers. As art it perhaps could benefit from a little more subtlety, but as a message about the horror of the real life events, it completes its task effectively.

HHHHH POMS

27th September Legends of the silver screen, including Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver, and Pam Grier, play residents of a retirement home who decide to form a cheerleading squad. It’s a quirky premise for a film, but beneath the novelty lies quite a formulaic comedy that doesn’t do anything you haven’t seen in films such as Space Cowboys, Last Vegas, Quartet or any other film in this vein. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that Oscar winner Keaton would be involved in something so flimsy, and while she is as likeable as ever, it’s not enough to save this damp squib.

HHHHH Also Out This Month... IT: CHAPTER 2 6th September

Two years ago, a reimagined version of Stephen King’s IT terrorised audiences, who followed a group of children called The Losers Club who were terrorised by a malevolent force. Well, this sequel rejoins The Losers Club as adults, and with IT returning to their lives they must be rid of him once and for all. The first film was an enormous hit with fans of horror and King’s work, but this second part of the horror saga has to live up to that hype. Luckily, there’s a stellar cast to achieve that goal, including Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader and James McAvoy.

DOWNTON ABBEY 13th September

The big screen version of the hit ITV show, and features everyone’s favourite aristocrats as they prepare for a visit from King George V and Queen Mary. Series regulars such as Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael and Dame Maggie Smith all return, joined by exciting new edition such as Imelda Staunton, and Tuppence Middleton. The series has been a sensation both here and in America, but can the classy drama translate to box office treasure?

EDITORIAL

Absence of Evidence Dooms an Unequal Shares Claim – Family legal expert Liz Orman explains

Parties should be aware that the Legal Ownership of Property is not always the same as the Beneficial Ownership and disputes can arise when no documentation is executed to show that the two are different. Such was the situation in a recent dispute which occurred after a couple who had two children, but never married, broke up. The male partner worked in the I.T. Industry and earned the larger salary. The female partner who initially worked, subsequently gave up work to look after the parties’ young children. The couple had moved to the Country from London, buying a property which was largely financed by the sale of the male partner’s property and a mortgage in the parties’ joint names. The female partner contributed a substantially lower sum to assist in the purchase, which was duly registered in their joint names. When the couple later broke up, the ownership of the property was disputed. At the heart of the dispute was whether they intended to purchase the property as “Joint Tenants” as the female partner contended, or as “Tenants-in-Common” as the male partner asserted. If they had purchased it as Joint Tenants, the net equity would be split between them equally. In contrast, if they had purchased the property as “Tenants-in-Common”, it would be owned in unequal shares, corresponding to their respective contributions to its purchase. Among the evidence given, was that the male partner said in a conversation in a Pub, “We are now 50-50 owners, but that means you owe half the debt as well”. The ownership of the property was recorded at the Land Registry as being a “Joint Tenancy”, this being consistent with the advice of the Solicitor who had acted for both parties on the purchase that, in the event of either partner’s death, the Title in the property would pass to the survivor.

At the original Hearing, the Judge ruled that the value of the property should be split equally. The male partner applied for permission to appeal, arguing that whilst he would have been content for the Title to pass if he died, while he was alive he would not have accepted a 50-50 split on a sale, on the basis that he had provided more of the capital for the property’s original purchase. He also contended that the evidence presented at the First Hearing could not displace the assumption that the ownership would be in the ratio of the respective partner’s contributions. In refusing the right to appeal, the High Court place significant emphasis on the fact that the male partner did nothing to show that it was intended for the Beneficial Interest he had in the property to be different from the Legal Interest. The moral of the story, therefore, is that if you are buying a property with someone else (and you are not married) and the Legal Title rests with all the Buyers, you must ensure that if the Beneficial Interest is different, the appropriate documentation is put in place.
