Case Study | Offshore Energy Limited (OEL)

North Sea Engineering

Offshore Energy Limited (OEL) provide project management and engineering solutions, and related training services, to the Oil and Gas, Subsea Telecommunications and Renewable Energy industries on a global scale.

OEL wanted to take a modular approach to support its activities utilising ISO and DNV shipping containers, which have the benefit of being easily transported worldwide by road, rail, and sea.

For this project, we were tasked with modifying two 20ft One Trip Containers for different purposes. One container was transformed into a store and workshop for rigging equipment, and the second became a modern office with air conditioning.

Both containers include electrics and strip lighting as well as full Grafo-Therm anti-condensation treatment on all internal walls and ceilings. The flooring was created with easy to install Coba tough lock tiles; made from resilient PVC, this flooring option is ideal for industrial use.

For the workshop, we installed a workbench, heavy duty hooks and a heater, creating a highly functional and comfortable working space.

The office walls were lined with 15mm melamine, supplied by the customer, making them stronger and extra durable. Behind the cargo doors, a partitional wall with a personnel door and sliding window was installed, providing a traditional office entrance. This unit was fitted with an air conditioning system and a heater.

The exteriors of both containers were painted light grey (RAL 9003) and fitted with custom decals in line with the company’s branding. They both hold CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) certifications, demonstrating that they are built safely, pass all testing and inspections, and are suitable for transportation at sea.

Once delivered to OEL, they made their own additions, including the installation of a first aid kit and eye wash station, fire extinguishers, and storage cabinets.

Case Study | Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI)

In 2023, Cleveland Modular successfully completed the first phase of our groundbreaking modular building project in partnership with Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), a leading global cleantech company.

Through a rigorous competitive tender process, we were selected to undertake the construction of five remarkable buildings, consisting of a total of 88 modular bays, at a prestigious site located in Essex.

The modular buildings constructed for this project are a testament to our expertise and dedication to excellence. Each building has been meticulously designed and engineered to meet the highest standards of functionality, aesthetics, and durability. Our team of skilled professionals has worked tirelessly to ensure that every detail of the construction aligns seamlessly with the project requirements.

Upon receiving notification of our successful submission, we promptly ordered the modular bays from our trusted manufacturer. We specifically requested the bays to be delivered flat-packed to the site. This decision not only facilitated on-site assembly but also greatly reduced the carbon footprint of the project. By aligning with HZI’s sustainability goals and their holistic vision for a greener future, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmentally conscious construction practices.

Once the bays were lifted into place, our dedicated team immediately began the internal fit-out phase. Our objective was to create a seamless and welcoming workplace environment for the HZI team. By carefully integrating the modular bays, we ensured an open and bright space that promotes productivity and a positive atmosphere.

As part of our comprehensive Boost Package, we provided a range of additional features to enhance the functionality and comfort of the buildings. These extras included data connectivity, fire alarms, emergency lighting, furniture, and an advanced centrally controlled air conditioning system. The system was specifically designed to meet the client’s requirements, with the facilities manager having full control over its operation.

Case Study | Ethical Power

Langford, Exeter Energy

In early 2024, the UK’s leading power generator and a leading renewables developer announced the construction of seven new UK solar and co-located battery projects.

The company aims to commission on average 450MW of new UK solar capacity per year up to 2030 in support of the UK’s ambitions for 70GW of solar capacity by 2035.extinguishers, and storage cabinets.

Ethical Power were awarded the construction contract to develop a solar farm in Langford, Exeter, that will provide 35MW solar + 35MW BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems).

Ethical Power required the services of Cleveland Hire to help create a site compound for the solar farm build.

The extensive site set-up will be on hire for the duration of construction, which is estimated to be around one year, and features multiple units including offices, canteens, drying rooms, toilets, showers, and stores.

Opting for Cleveland Hire’s JCoP Gold Standard fleet of site accommodation units, Ethical Power have ensured their temporary structures fully comply with the latest JCoP fire safety guidelines.

By hiring a variety of accommodation units, workers are provided with designated spaces that cater to their specific needs, ensuring they have comfortable and well-equipped areas for both productive work and restful break times.

Several shipping containers were modified to include electrics and racking for safe storage purposes.

For this project, we supplied: Seven 32ft canteens, eight 32ft offices, five 32ft drying rooms, two 32ft heart units (double office), Three 10ft Stores, One 10ft COSHH Store, Two 20ft Stores with electrics and racking, Two 6+1 Toilet + Shower, One 3+1 Toilet block, four tanks, and five staircases for stacked units.

Case Study | Ventus Energy

Ventus Energy is a renewable energy engineering company that works primarily on offshore windfarms across the world. We modified a 10ft and 20ft Shipping Container to become COSHH stores for the electrical engineering company.

Ventus’ mission is to create a safer, more sustainable world through intelligent offshore windfarm operations, helping to protect the planet from the dangers of global warming.

They came to us as they required bespoke units to be used as offshore workshops on a cable installation vessel for an upcoming project.

Our modifications team took a 10ft and 20ft Shipping Container and fitted them both with built-in gas cannister cages and COSHH cabinets for the safe storage of hazardous materials.

Shelving, electrics, and lighting were installed as per the specification requirements of the customer, with louvre vents also being fitted for improved ventilation.

For the 20ft workshop, two workbenches and tool chests were added to create additional storage and working space.

A transformer was installed at the front of the larger workshop to safely transfer electric energy from one circuit to another by changing the voltage.

Both units were completed by applying large company decals to the exterior of the containers.

Case Study | Strabag

Whitby, North Yorkshire Construction

Cleveland Modular provided a 28-bay facility and a 3-bay emergency response building to support the construction of a major tunnelling project in the North East of England.

STRABAG UK are the contractors responsible for the tunnel construction on the Anglo American Woodsmith Project, which is the development of a state-of-the-art polyhalite fertiliser mine based two miles south of Whitby in the North York Moors National Park. It will set new standards for sustainable mining while helping to boost food production and sustainable farming practices.

For this project, our Cleveland Modular team supplied a large 28 bay single storey facility that houses the engineering team. The building serves multiples purposes and features office, canteen, and drying areas, as well as toilet and shower facilities.

Positioned alongside the 28 bay office building, sits a smaller 3 bay single storey building used solely by the emergency response team as a base to monitor work within the mine and for the quick deployment of staff and equipment in the event of an incident.

Multiple ancillary items were supplied as part of our ‘Boost Your Space’ service, providing both structures with fire alarms, emergency lighting, air conditioning, dehumidifiers for drying rooms, and IT installation / provision.

All units were painted RAL6008 (Sherwood Green) to comply with local planning requirements, along with black out windows as the site overlooks a caravan park.

By providing a large single-story building and a small emergency response base, Cleveland Modular has ensured that STRABAG UK’s engineering and safety teams have the optimal environment to carry out their crucial work.
