In partnership with Copiah-Lincoln Community College Workforce Education, the Simpson County Development Foundation conducts the Simpson County Leadership Development Institute each calendar year. The Leadership Institute is a joint project of SCDF and Co-Lin, utilizing the resources of Co-Lin Workforce Education and the facilities of the Co-Lin Simpson County Center. Each year, the Institute is held locally at the Co-Lin Simpson Center, limited to no more than 20 participants and tuition is $200.00. Lunch and refreshments are provided by the Foundation each day the Institute is in session. The Institute is scheduled in four two-day sessions spread across the calendar year. • Participants take part in classroom learning on topics such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory; Essential Skills of Leadership; Essential Skills of Communication; and Entrepreneurship. • In addition, there are numerous on-site visits to county businesses, institutions, and manufacturers. • Each annual Institute concludes with a Local Leaders Forum. • As part of the Institute, participants select a project directly related to community or workplace. Automotive Service Technology Programs Looks to the Future Today’s rapidly changing society demands that Co-Lin and the communities we serve work closely together, especially in career, technical and workforce education. Excellence in career and technical education is the goal of teachers, administrators, and volunteer advisory committee members. Bringing employers and educators together on advisory committees provides a structured opportunity for sharing information and ideas related to program improvement and placement of students into the workforce. Employers are an integral part of designing and updating curriculum to be sure students are learning the most current skills. In October 2012, the Automotive Service Technology Program held its fall Advisory Committee meeting. The meeting took place at the Wesson Campus. The Advisory Committee for Automotive Service includes many local business owners and

managers. The committee was excited to have the opportunity to give program feedback. In fact, many members are former Co-Lin alumni who have strong ties to the college. The Committee was pleased to see that the Automotive Service Program at Co-Lin is a NATEF certified program and is preparing students to complete the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams. The committee toured the program facilities and decided to bring its focus on two things: 1) Developing a set of equipment upgrade recommendations for the Wesson campus lab; and 2) Creating apprenticeship and work-based learning opportunities for current sophomores. The committee left to work on the two items listed above and will meet again in February 2013 to finalize recommendations and opportunities for students.

Future Workforce @ Co-Lin Welcoming 8th and 9th graders to the PAC! Co-Lin Career, Technical and Workforce Division hosted the Pathways to Accelerating Career (PAC) Conference October 29, 2012. The morning session began with 250 eighth and ninth grade students from Loyd Star and West Lincoln and ended with 232 students from Bogue Chitto and Enterprise. The eighth grade students attended six sessions where students were able to tour programs currently offered at the college. The ninth graders also attended six sessions where instructors showcased their programs. Students were able to participate in hands on activities from sitting behind the wheel of an 18-Wheeler to driving the ROV-underwater robot. Emphasis was placed on career pathway choices, work ethics, preparation in math and science, as students heard current and former students talk about the pathways. Students saw demonstrations by instructors of actual equipment used to teach college students and workforce students as they prepare to enter the workforce in high skill, high demand, and high wage field. Co-Lin partners attending the conference were Kelly Scrivner and Kenny Goza from Entergy, Vickie Powell from MS Scholars, Kay Burton from the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, and Dr. Stacy Adcock and several teachers, counselors, and support staff from the Lincoln County School District.
