WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Career, Technical and Workforce Education Division recognized three businesses and industries for their service and partnership at the annual Business and Industry Appreciation Luncheon held recently at The Thames Center on the college’s Wesson Campus. Beginning this year, the Career, Technical and Workforce Education divisions will honor one business or organization that has provided exceptional support for Co-Lin students. Georgia-Pacific LLC of Monticello received the first annual President’s Award. For over a decade, Georgia-Pacific has been partnered with Workforce Education to train their employees. They have an intensive in-house training program that includes safety training as well as professional staff development. They go to great efforts to ensure their employees are always trained to meet the ever-changing safety standards and newest technologies in the industry.

Each year Georgia Pacific LLC partners with Workforce Education to bring their employees over 4,000 hours of training information in the form of Flow Through Training as well as Workforce Education delivered training. Over the years, Georgia Pacific LLC has generously donated materials and supplies in support of Career-Tech and Workforce training programs. They have also provided donations through Co-Lin’s Foundation and supported the college as a whole. “Their generosity has enabled us to save money while allowing our students to receive the best hands on training available in our area,” said Workforce Director Angela Berch. For well over a decade, Georgia-Pacific has provided their Catfish Cooking Team to prepare a delicious catfish meal at our Business-Industry Appreciation Luncheon.

Co-Lin President Dr. Ronnie Nettles (right) and Dean of Career, Technical, and Workforce Education Dr. Gail Baldwin (left) present King’s Daughters Medical Center CEO Alvin Hoover with a Special Recognition.

2013 Business and Industry Special Recognitions Special Recognition Awards were presented to King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven and to PriorityOne Bank in Magee.

KDMC also contributes their time and funding through our Foundation Office, our campus Wellness Initiative, athletics, and other campus events and activities.

King’s Daughters Medical Center of Brookhaven was recognized as one of Career-Technical Education and Workforce Education’s outstanding partners from among the 100 business and industries that serve our students.

Approximately five years ago PriorityOne Bank began its partnership with the Workforce Education Division. Realizing the need for training but having employees located at different branches and work locations, PriorityOne was on the forefront of implementing on-line training in order to prepare and educate its varying workforce from all areas of the financial institution including human resources, compliance officials, lenders, customer service representatives, and information technology specialists. No matter the role of the employee PriorityOne was dedicated to providing training for its entire workforce. In fact, during the second quarter of Fall 2012 PriorityOne Bank expanded its on-line offerings and continues to grow its on-line training partnership with Co-Lin Workforce Education.

This year, KDMC provided support of the Career, Technical and Workforce Education Division with opportunities in internship in their medical laboratory, radiology department, nursing department and respiratory care department. The medical facility continues to allow their employees to serve on various advisory committees such as MLT, MRT, RCT and PN. This year they have been extremely helpful in advising us on our newest program, Heath Information Technology. Without their input and support, this program would not be provided for our students and potential workforce. KDMC is a good example of how an organization invests time in students and shows the benefits for both the business and the students. They have demonstrated a very strong commitment to students’ selection of career pathways through our Scrubs and Scopes Conference. Not only did KDMC contribute financially to the conference but a team from the hospital which included Dr. Robert Britt provided leadership to not only Co-Lin students but students in the Co-Lin secondary systems. Through their workforce education project, KDMC received reimbursement for their well-established in-house training program and is expanding that program in the near future to include on-line training.

In the spring of 2013, PriorityOne Bank and Co-Lin Workforce Education again expanded its workforce partnership to include support of PriorityOne Bank’s “Customer Focused Banking Sales Development / Referral Workshop”. Co-Lin Workforce Education was invited to participate in this three day training occurring each quarter, which included the topics “Putting Yourself in the Customer Shoes”, “Customer Development”, and “Putting It All Together”. This training showed the value that PriorityOne Bank puts on developing its employees in order to better serve its customer needs, which anyone within the financial industry knows is more financial efficient to maintain a customer base than it is to attract new customers. PriorityOne Bank generously donates through the Co-Lin Foundation each year in support of the Annual Foundation Golf Classic and other campus activities.

C U L I N A R YA R T S Co-Lin Introduces New Technology Program

Fall 2013 will bring new opportunities for students interested in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. The Culinary Arts Technology program will replace the current Food Production Program on the Wesson Campus. The Culinary Arts Technology program provides a solid foundation in the methods and science of cooking through exposure to classical, American, and international cuisine as well as the art of baking and pastries. Special emphasis is placed on culinary tools, equipment, techniques, and specialty ingredients. Successful completion of the 2-year program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts. Students who complete the program are eligible to obtain ManageFirst Certification from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

In addition, students completing this program will be eligible to obtain ServSafe Sanitation certification from the National Restaurant Association. Instructor, Jody Hoff, is anticipating great opportunities for students, “Culinary Arts is the first step in preparing students to begin the career pathway to being a professional cook or chef. ” Mrs. Hoff adds, “In addition, these changes create a certain allure to the program. The “culinary arts” title brings an element of excitement and brings to mind the “glamour and art of food.” In a sense this is a facelift to the current program. For more information regarding the Culinary Arts Technology Program, please contact Jody Hoff at 601.643.8388.
