Pathways

Spring/Summer 2014 Training Catalog Martin tapped as Co-Lin’s Dean of Career, Technical and Workforce Education WESSON - Jackie Martin returns to CopiahLincoln Community College bringing 10 years of Career and Technical Education experience as she assumes the position of Career, Technical and Workforce Education Dean. Martin will provide leadership to Career, Technical and Workforce faculty and staff at three Co-Lin locations and be integral in the implementation and management of pertinent career and technical and workforce programs throughout the district. Martin replaces Dr. Gail Baldwin who retired in June. In addition to campus leadership, Martin will be nurturing business and industry, which is essential to the success of all career, technical and workforce programs. “I am very excited to return to Co-Lin,” Martin said. “I look forward to continuing to foster relationships with business and industry throughout the district.” Martin previously served as the director of the Brookhaven Technical Center where she also participated on committees such as AdvancED (SACS Co-Chair), Central Mississippi Planning & Development District Local Workforce Investment Board, Brookhaven School District Leadership Team, ICAPS Implementation team, and Co-Lin’s Workforce Advisory Council. While at Brookhaven Schools, she saw enrollment increase and the implementation of the new dual-credit course automotive service

technology program as a result of an ongoing partnership between Co-Lin and Brookhaven Schools. In addition, she was named the 2013 Administrator of the Year. Martin started her career in the classroom as a Business and Computer Technology Instructor for Crystal Springs High School and was recognized as the 2006 CSHS Teacher of the year and the 2006 Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. Martin transitioned into administration at Co-Lin as she filled the positions of Tech Prep Coordinator and Director of Career Technical Curriculum and Assessment. At CoLin, she was a recipient of the Howell C. Garner High Performance Award and NISOD Teaching in Excellence Award. In addition, Martin had the opportunity to participate in the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy, the Women in Higher Education MS Network, and as a Mississippi Scholars Presenter. Co-Lin Vice President of Instructional Services Dr. Jane Hulon expressed her excitement in welcoming Martin. “We are thrilled to have her back at the college to serve in this leadership capacity. Jackie has much strength that will allow her to be successful leading the Career-Technical faculty and staff into the future,” said Hulon. Martin received her undergraduate degree in technology teacher education and Master of Science Technology from Mississippi State University. She is currently on track to complete course work for her Education Specialist degree. Martin, a native of Lincoln County, is a graduate of West Lincoln Attendance Center. She and her husband, David, are the parents of one son, Eli.

CHEMSTAR

BROOKHAVEN - Chemstar Plant Manager Trevor Walker presents a contribution to President Dr. Ronnie Nettles to assist with the purchase of a laser driven fire extinguisher training system. This interactive system simulates realistic fires and reacts to proper and improper extinguisher technique. Students receive hands on experience with a LED-driven digital flame and laser training extinguisher to provide a dynamic simulation for trainees while eliminating the hazards of conventional fire extinguisher training. Workforce Education will use this device to train Chemstar employees as well as district workforce in fire safety to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards of safety. OSHA standards require employers to provide proper exits, firefighting equipment, emergency plans, and employee training to prevent fire deaths and injuries in the workplace.

ELEVANCE RENEWABLE SCIENCES NATCHEZ - Elevance Renewable Sciences recently donated two complete self contained breathing units to the Workforce Education Center at CopiahLincoln Community College. These training units will be used in OSHA safety classes such as confined space and respiratory protection training for Elevance and other district industries. The Natchez biorefinery will use canola or soybean oil to produce olefins and oleochemicals to be used in products such as but not limited to detergents, cleaners, lubricants, and additives. As the refinery expands it will create approximately 300 construction jobs and bring 165 permanent jobs to Adams County. What is WorkKeys? WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system (product of ACT, Inc.) measuring “real world” skills that employers believe are critical to job success. These skills are valuable for any occupation - skilled or professional - and at any level of education. Earned Credential: A Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is earned based upon the outcome of an individual’s assessment. Getting a CRC will allow an individual to show prospective employers that he or she possesses the basic skills they are seeking. The CRC focuses on three targeted skills: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information Benefits for Individuals

• Participants take part in classroom learning on topics such as the MyersBriggs Personality Inventory; Essential Skills of Leadership; Essential Skills of Communication; and Entrepreneurship. • In addition, there are numerous on-site visits to county businesses, institutions, and manufacturers. • Each annual Institute concludes with a Local Leaders Forum. • As part of the Institute, participants select a project directly related to community or workplace.

Nominations for participants are solicited from the county’s leadership and business communities. Nominees then complete applications, and participants are selected from among the applicants. The Institute’s goal is to provide participants with a development opportunity—both personal and professional— that they will find to be well worth the investment of time and tuition. Moreover, participants have a chance to meet and interact with other individuals from around the county with whom they will continue to share the cultural and economic leadership of the county.
