Plans for Progress: upcoming training opportunities NEW! As workforce needs evolve so do we. Copiah-Lincoln Workforce Education has five short term training programs on the drawing board for the 2012 spring semester. If you are interested in training to enter any of the fields below and let us know at 601.643.8715. PHLEBOTOMY CERTIFICATION Phlebotomists are responsible for a number of important duties in a hospital, each of which ensure that they are able to efficiently and correctly collect blood samples of patients. Venipuncture refers to the act of withdrawing a blood sample from a patient and the phlebotomist’s main job. In addition, phlebotomists must offer patients reassurance during the procedure, correctly label blood samples and accurately complete paperwork for the lab testing the blood sample.

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION A medical transcriptionist’s (MT) primary duty is to ensure that all types of relevant patient information are transformed to an accurately written text document. Due to the large quantity of legal and medical red tape and patient information, most doctor’s offices and hospitals favor medical stored electronically records. These transcribed recordings create medical reports that can be critical to medical personnel in an emergency situation. Accuracy is of utmost importance to a MT. MT’s may be employed by a doctor’s office, a hospital, or medical transcription company.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in dispensing medication. Technicians are accountable to the supervising pharmacist who is legally responsible through state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by the pharmacy. Job duties might include providing medication and other health care products to patients and working with third party and doctors’ offices in resolving adjudication of patients’ insurance or state program. Other routine tasks could be compounding of medications, verbal prescriptions, doctor calls, expense and medication orders, returns and expired credits and non-licensed pharmacy management.

MEDICAL CODING ASSOCIATE Coders transform narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries and healthcare procedures into numeric or alphanumeric designations, that is, code numbers. Code numbers are detailed in order to accurately describe the diagnoses and the procedures performed to test or correct these diagnoses. Common uses of medical codes in healthcare include: identifying symptoms that must be evaluated, alerting other healthcare professionals to life-threatening allergies, reporting services performed for reimbursement, helping with administrative functions such as staffing, scheduling and adding or decreasing healthcare services, comparing facilities and planning for new services in underserved areas.
