ANDEMONIUM and panic reigned on Monday morning as patients and staff at Port Shep­ stone Regional Hospital had to be hastily evac­ uated after a fire broke out in one of the wards.

KZN Department of Health spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi said there were no casualties or smoke in­ halation as a result of the fire, but other reports say three patients were badly burnt.

Emergency services personnel were not immedi­ ately able to pinpoint the cause of the fire, but some staff at the scene said the fire started in the IT section after 9am.

A nurse, who is not permitted to talk to the media, said she was working in J ward when the alarm was

raised about the fire.

“We assisted patients, some of whom were very weak, to walk out of the ward, and escorted them to the gate,” she said.

Critically ill patients in high care and intensive care units were evacuated and transported to Durban hos­ pitals by helicopter.

DA spokesperson on health, Dr Imran Keeka, said a full investigation needs to be conducted to find the cause of the fire.

“The DA will be interacting with KZN Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo and his HOD to better understand what has happened today [Monday]. Particularly im­ portant are the department’s contingency plans for the care of patients, some of whom are critically ill ICU patients on life support. The same urgency applies to urgent theatre cases,” said Keeka.

Rapist jailed for 2 life terms A

MAN accused of murder, two rape counts and attempted murder received heavy sentences last Wednesday in the Scottburgh Regional Court.

The crimes were committed between 2013 and 2014 in Port Shepstone and Hibberdene.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said in December 2013, Sibusiso Mga Shozi (33) attacked a 17-year-old woman in Merlewood and raped her at knifepoint. A case was opened with the Port Shepstone SAPS.

In May 2014, he attacked an 18-year-old female and her 27-year-old male friend as they were walking by Umzimayi Bridge in Hibberdene.

“They were approached by the accused who asked for a cigarette. When the female gave him the cigarette, the accused suddenly hit her friend and stabbed him. The stabbed victim then ran away.

“The accused then grabbed the female and raped her on the side of the road. The body of the male, who was stabbed, was later found on

the side of the road as he died due to the stab wound to his chest,” said Wiid.

Murder and rape cases were opened at Hibberdene SAPS. Upon investigation, police realised they were looking for the same suspect in the Hibberdene and Port Shepstone cases.

“In June 2014, the police went to a house in Mfazazane, Hibberdene and knocked on the door of the said accused. He refused to comply with the instructions of the police and instead attacked them trying to stab them with a dagger and throwing hot oil at them. The police re-

ON Monday morning, Port Shepstone SAPS acted on a tip-off and intercepted a vehicle transporting dagga from the Eastern Cape to Durban.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Warrant Officer Johan Terreblanche from the Port Shepstone K9 unit and Constable Sibusiso Cele from the Port Shepstone 10111 call centre assisted Detective Warrant Officer Abraham Sonnekus from DPCI: Organised Crime Unit, who had received information about the vehicle.

“Shortly after 8am, the car was stopped near the Oribi toll plaza and a 27-year-old male was found to be the driver and only occupant of the car. The car was searched and 53 packages containing dagga were found,” said Wiid.

The dagga was found to have a street value of R360 000. The suspect will be charged with dealing in dagga and will appear in court soon.

ITH crime against women escalating in recent weeks, a KwaNzimakwe woman has broken her silence about the abuse she has endured all her life.

After being abandoned in a sugar-cane field by her biological mother at birth, Thembisa Hedi’s (42) life is a tale of hardships and incredible bravery.

She was born in Mncobothini near Lusikisiki and raised by foster parents, who she said, abused her physically, emotionally and sexually.

“I remember once one of my siblings caught the father raping me and told the mother. That night he beat me with a barb wire ring on my bum and my back. The pain endured for weeks,” said Hedi.

At 14 she tracked down her biological family, but even there her uncle abused her until she fell pregnant a year later and fled in fear of what the uncle would do.

Hedi ended up in Lusikisiki urban where she looked for odd jobs to survive.

“I found a job with a man who I later found out was a pimp. By then I was desperate to support my child so I worked for this man as a sex worker for three years until I fell pregnant at 18 and he chased me away,” she said.

From there Hedi moved around among friends until she ended up in Kwa Nzimakwe where she now lives in a church building with her five children.

Hedi said she does not know where to turn for help anymore.

“Both my daughters were raped, one by a former lover and the other was found tied to a tree after being raped repeatedly.”

With recent incidents receiving widespread Thembisa Hedi shares her story of abuse at the hands of those meant to protect her.

Unrepaired construction hole a concern OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com MANABA residents have raised concerns over accidents caused by a hole on their road which they say was left by Ugu District Municipality after fixing a burst water pipe last month.

Koot Koekemoer, who lives at the Lomati Flats on Marine Drive close

to the street, said he has tried numerous times to get the municipality to cover the hole, however, his complaints have been ignored.

“We have had two accidents already and no one seems interested in this.

“I mean, do they want people to die before they do something about it.”

Koekemoer said Ugu did the pipe fixture last month.

“They came to fix a burst water pipe and when they were done they just covered with a pile of bricks,” he said.

A shop owner in the area said the hole was a concern because it was on a very busy intersection.

“Marine Drive is the main road in Margate, lots of cars pass here and many are not aware of it and that is what causes accidents.”

Fever asked the municipality for comment, but at the time of going to press none had been received.

Farewell to a ‘community heroine’ OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com

RIENDS and family of “community heroine” Marlene McLeod (74) gathered at the Uvongo Methodist Church on Thursday to pay their last respects to her.

Mcleod, who died in Hospice after a four-year battle with cancer, was described as being fun loving, warm, compassionate, honest, loyal and God-fearing.

She was born Marlene Hildegard Schafer in 1943 in Port Elizabeth were she spent most of her adolescent life.

In 1963 she married Douglas Mcleod with whom she had a daughter Dawn Gullis and a son Garth Mcleod.

“It was love at first sight. I was a member of the Port Elizabeth Vespa Scooter Club, and being a novice I was the only member without an attractive pillion passenger, so Marlene’s sister Olga arranged a meeting with Marlene,” said Douglas Mcleod.

She assumed numerous roles in her life including a tour guide and PA with Pyotts Biscuit Factory, a Cub mistress, an airport representative for travel agents Kuhn and Nagel and finally a bookkeeper with Godfrey Lequain, which later evolved into a million-rand company, Hydraulic Steele Tube, where she worked 30 years.

However, it was Mcleod’s charitable and extracurricular activities that earned her love and respect from the South Coast community.

“Her hands were never idle, she turned trash into treasure,” said Douglas Mcleod.

Her battle with cancer began after the death of her son Garth in 2015 in a car accident.

“We stayed at our son’s home intending to stay for a short time before returning home. On March 15, 2015 Marlene went with Garth to the gate to see him off to work, little knowing

it would be the last time she would see him alive,” recalled Douglas Mcleod.

“That was the start of a four-year fight with cancer which she fought with all her strength and determination even through the treatments some of which were brutal,” he said.

The church send-off was well attended with performances from the Margate Pipes and Drums, members of The Shafts Social Club, The Uvongo Methodist Church congregation and the South Coast community, whose lives she touched.

Orphanage FEVER receives donation 25 May 2017

ON Saturday Chris Allan and Ann Butcher visited the Sithandisizwe Orphanage near Izingolweni, bearing gifts.

The children and their care givers were overwhelmed when they saw groceries, clothing, books, toys and bunk beds.

A rooster and a hen were also donated to ensure a constant supply of fresh eggs.

Taking learning to the next level

The day was a huge success and another visit is on the cards for the end of the year.

Flea market traders happy with business OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com THE Hibiscus Coast Mall was abuzz on Saturday as the community traded at the monthly car boot sale.

Traders said the sale was surprisingly successful given the time of the month.

“My mom passed away recently and we had all her stuff piled up at the house and my friend Erna van Rooyen suggested I sell them here,” said first-

time trader Elizabeth Robbertson.

Yam Yam Dzingwa, who has been selling vintage clothing locally for years, said the sale caught her eye while shopping at the mall.

“I approached Lorraine [Bruigom], the organiser, and asked her how I could join and she was helpful, and I’ve been coming here every month since then,” said Dzingwa.

Lorraine Bruigom said the idea of the sale stemmed from a gap she saw for those wishing to trade in the Margate area.

“Other flea markets are restrictive, like if one person is selling crafts, no one else can. Here you can sell whatever you want. There’s a family that’s immigrating to Germany and are trying to sell their belongings because they can’t take everything.

“There’s a guy who has cerebral palsy who people donate things to and he comes and sells some of them to make a bit of extra cash.

“There are people who make their own crafts. At the end of the day we could all do with a little bit of extra cash,” said Bruigom.

Arts and talent nurtured at forum T

HE Arts, Film and Video Forum (AFVF) hosted its end-of-programme showcase of talent at the Genesis Conference Centre in Marburg last Friday and the event was well attended.

Through a lotto-funded programme, the organisation has supported some emerging music and visual arts talent on the South Coast over the past nine months. The talent showcase at the event signalled the end of its first phase of development.

The AFVF was founded in 2010 to help emerging artists on the South Coast to get their work recognised and support their progress onto the national and international stage.

Starting from humble beginnings, the organisation has done much grassroot development in schools and the community.

Following its successful application for lottery funding in 2016, the AFVF established its recording studio at the Genesis Youth Centre and auditioned local singers and bands, eventually choosing a few who they recorded and mastered their music.

Ivan Naidoo of AFVF Hilton said the emphasis has been on the creation of original music they can be proud of.

“The results have been exceptional and the showcase was the platform for these artists and bands to display their talent before an appreciative audience,” he said.

The three artists and groups showcased were Fine Cara, a threepiece rock band, Caroline Cardew and Chad van Niekerk, who are solo artists.

“Fab” Mpendulo Mbanga, a hiphop and rap artist from Gamalakhe is also part of the AFVF developmental programme as well as supporting acts.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Cllr Nomusa Mqwebu was also in attendance and expressed her support and willingness to work with the AFVF to promote the arts on the South Coast.

HILE many visit the doctor for health issues and injuries, regular check-ups, especially to your gynaecologist could be life saving, says Margate Private Hospital’s new obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr Sibusiso Phinzi.

Phinzi (34), originally from Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape, said he chose to specialise in this because he saw the need for gynaecological health specialists in the medical field.

“Throughout my medical career gynaecological health has been a concern for me, because I’ve seen people who suffer from conditions that could have been prevented or easily treated,” said Phinzi.

He said particularly in the public sector where staff and resources are scarce, patients often suffer unnecessarily. Phinzi conducted research at the Port Shepstone Hospital where he was investigating a procedure where women would lose their womb during child birth.

“It is a life-saving operation for those who have difficult child birth because in those cases

it was either the mother or the child who were going to die, but who are saved through the removal of the womb.”

Phinzi’s main interest in the field is cervical cancer, which he said, although less common than breast cancer, was the leading cause of female cancer-related deaths.

“Women need to go for a pap smear every three years and annually if HIV positive, also getting a vaccination for the sexually inactive is important,” Phinzi.

While some consider gynaecology to be predominantly a women’s field, Phinzi, who is the only boy child among three sisters, said most patients have said male gynaecologists tend to me more empathetic to their conditions.

“The reward of welcoming new people onto Earth through successful childbirth is so rewarding,” he said.

Those hoping to venture into the field must brace themselves for hard work and consistent challenges.

“I think something that is not stressed enough in your undergraduate years is the medical protection society fees you’ll need to pay when you start practising. The fee currently stands at R820 000 a year, which amounts to R65 000 every month to practice as an obstetriciangynaecologist,” he said.

Hi Susan, I am a bit concerned that my puppy is dominant. A trainer told me that mouthy behaviour in a puppy is a display of dominance.

Please help.

Theresa Hi Theresa, young puppies, blind and deaf, naturally explore their new world with their mouths. This is certainly not a sign of dominance.

From day one the puppies begin nibbling and mining with their mouths and noses in search of their mother’s milk. Only the uninformed would punish a year-old human baby for pulling at hair or testing objects by mouthing. The same applies to dogs.

Unfortunately, many trainers do not question and correct wrong thinking but remain stuck in ruts, religiously quoting old wives’ tales and following archaic methodology that we now know has done so much harm.

Have you ever seen a human mother mouthing or nibbling her baby’s hand or ear? Is this displaying dominance? Of course not. Although you might not know the explanation of this behaviour, you know instinctively that it is any-

thing but aggressive.

The “I could eat you up” impulses elicited when seeing a cute creature have been shown in functional magnetic imaging scans to be a result of activation of the reward centres in the brain regions, triggering a pleasant rush of the “feel good” chemical dopamine.

Play-biting behaviours occur between trusted associates. Susan Perry and colleagues at the anthropology department of the University of California have recorded capuchin monkeys in ritualistic behaviour exhibiting clamping down of fingers with their teeth, hard enough to trap, but without hurting, sending the message “I’m so trustworthy, you can stick your fingers in my mouth.”

Far from being dominant and manipulating, these are displays of affection and benign intention.

Nuzzling, mouthing and gentle nipping behaviours, which resemble biting behaviours, are not only for feeding and aggression but are part of the friendly social repertoires of many mammals.

They are also a means of developing and practising bite control. However, it is desirable and important to train a young puppy to inhibit his bite and to refrain from demanding mouthy behaviour.

There are many ways of doing this in a compassionate and force-free way. I can’t stress enough how important it is to choose a trainer who is up to date and uses non-aversive training methods.

Highs and lows

LAST week saw us promoting at the Tourism Indaba 2017 during which it was announced that Durban won the bid to host this big event for another five years.

This is good news for us because we are then af­ forded the opportunity to host tourism trade and media tours either before or after the event. Costs to promote locally are way less than attending the show in say Cape Town or Johannesburg.

It was interesting to note that there was some interest in our area from agents from potential source markets such as China, Italy and Switzerland which previously had not cropped up on our interna­ tional radar. Most of our long haul visitors originate from the United Kingdom and Germany so any ex­ pansion into new markets will be superb.

On the domestic front we also managed to get free air time on SAFM which gained us national cov­ erage and the opportunity to plug our excellent tour­

On a low note the death of John Rudling in a fly­ ing accident last weekend is a sad loss to our tourism community.

John was previously a bed and breakfast owner and as a helicopter pilot he was generous in taking media and some of our personnel on the odd flight as a means of awareness of our destination and his services to visitors.

In 1980s Pietermaritzburg, I had the pleasure of teaching him and brother Bruce at high school so on my arrival here in 2013 it was great meeting up with him after so many years and from time to time having pint or two together after golf or at the Mar­ gate Flying Club.

To John’s family we extend our sincere condolen­ ces. He was a popular fellow in the tourism and avia­ tion circles and will be missed by many.

IN 29 days, Ugu District Municipality, in partnership with Cyassound Holdings, will host the district’s grandest annual music festival, the 11th edition of the Ugu Jazz Festival on June 24 at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

This annual music extravaganza promises the greatest entertainment of hardcore jazz repertoires from internationally acclaimed jazz legends such as Jimmy Dludlu and Ringo Mandlingozi and soulful Afro­soul music jams to the modern sounds in the music fraternity, which include Amanda Black and Sandz, among others.

Tickets are already on sale at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers stores at R280 for general ac­ cess, R350 for the Golden Circle and R1200 for VIP access. We have also made provision for limited pay parking space at the venue, which is on sale at R150 per ticket.

The Ugu Jazz Festival has gained loyal patrons and we are extremely proud to announce that our ticket sales have improved and we anticipate a sold­

out venue. We urge those who have not yet bought tickets to do so now and be part of the district’s pride and joy.

Over the years, we have witnessed tremendous growth in this event, which has become a perma­ nently fixture on our annual calendar of events.

The Ugu Jazz Festival is now one of the highly­ recognised economy boosters in the district.

Through it we have created temporary employment, given growth opportunities to young businesses and attracted business outside the boundaries of Ugu district.

This is also one of many initiatives implemented by our municipality to fight against three triple chal­ lenge ­ poverty, unemployment and inequality.

To ensure our patrons have a pleasant experi­ ence at the event while also ensuring that nearby residents are not inconvenienced in any way, certain roads will be closed during the event and monitored by the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Ray Nkonyeni’s Traffic Department and the South African Police Service to ensure easy access and to eliminate traffic congestion.

High­quality public and pupil transport needed I SYMPATHISE with M. Mashimane’s problems arising from the prohibition on taking children to school on the back of a bakkie, but it seems there is no easy solution (Government should assist us, May 18).

What is of concern to me is that even with a canopy fitted, the load area of a bakkie is not safe in the event of an accident.

So many children, and adults, have been killed or injured when these bakkies overturn, usually due to the negligent, reckless and often aggressive driving habits that seem to be the norm on our roads.

What I do feel the government needs to tighten up on is the quality of drivers entrusted with public transport. There should be stringent licence requirements and monitoring of these drivers, and proper vehicles need to be used, as understood by Mashimane.

Perhaps the solution for bakkie owners, who are now out of pocket, is to go into the transportation of loads other than people.

I’m sure there is a demand for removal of builder’s rubble and garden refuse, and trans-

portation of furniture, courier work, and so on, for which a bakkie could be suitable.

I don’t know how many school children are in need of transport, distances involved, condition of roads and so on, but as Mashimane says, the government should be assisting and not leaving parents with the dilemma of finding some unorthodox means of getting their children to school.

There really should be a quality public transport service if there is a demand, and that could create employment for the responsible drivers who now find themselves out of work.

I feel strongly about the safety of children because I have witnessed a serious accident in which children’s bodies were flung in all directions. It was a sight I will never recover from. I also witnessed a similar taxi accident.

In both cases the drivers were overtly and wildly reckless. One never forgets these experiences which are relived every time one reads of yet another case.

RIP dear friend JOHN Rudling was a legend at the Margate Air­ port, being a helicopter flying instructor for a long time. He was also well known in the farm­ ing fraternity where he crop­ sprayed sugar cane.

He was vice­chairman of the Margate Light Plane Club until 2016.

He was a keen golfer, good friend and dedi­ cated family man.

We will miss you. Deepest condolences to Jenny, Megan and James.

Govt must take heed of protests THE recent violent protests have struck fear into South Africans and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

In Coligny, Eldorado Park, Richards Bay and other parts of the country, there has been huge damage and loss to personal and public property.

Such protests are truly unacceptable and leave South African citizens with a deep sense of anxiety and insecurity.

These protests should serve as a lesson and a warning to the ruling party, the politicians and political elites, to study seriously how the apparent corruption, nepotism, cronyism, political infighting, lack of service delivery, tender-driven fraud and unfulfilled promises made by politicians to get votes, are fuelling anger and tension

in the country.

The masses are hungry, unemployed, living in miserable conditions and tired of coping with socioeconomic difficulties.

The protests that we have witnessed are a sign of disappointment and could in the long run affect the stability of South Africa.

If the government fails to take heed and begin to address the trigger factors, then we all are in for some very challenging times.

In order to prevent the rapid breakdown of our country, the government needs to act fast on service delivery and boost economic growth.

Citizens can help improve service delivery by holding leaders accountable and pointing out the abuse of systems and structures.

The truth is that the ANC is leading South Africa down such a disastrous path that the South African Council of Churches, for the first time since the demise of the apartheid government, has taken up the fight against the ANC. The DA and other opposition parties and the support of educated and thinking South Africans, is fighting the same good fight while the ANC clings to obsolete and untenable ideologies, issuing promises it cannot sustain. No wonder Zuma fears and condemns “clever Africans,” because they, in ever-increasing numbers, are ultimately the people who will bring down the ANC. The ANC’s support base is being increasingly reduced to those who rely on it for sinecures, and to rural areas where the most gullible people live.

Zondi says that “people love the ANC”. That misplaced and blind love for a political party, rather than for the good of our country, has been a major cause of our downfall.

Zondi would be well advised to pray for South Africa which the ANC has led into the most dire straits.

HAVE to take issue with Musa Zondi’s letter (God Save the ANC, May 18) in which he states:, “If you saw and experienced the brutality of the apartheid system and Koevoet, you would think twice before you joined forces with the DA.” The writer goes on to list names of murdered “struggle” leaders, implying that they were murdered by the DA. The obvious truth is that the DA has never supported apartheid, but has fought it since the party’s inception under Helen Suzman whom Nelson Mandela lauded.

In fact, the origins of the DA are steeped in the fight against the injustices of the apartheid government, just as today the party is fighting the injustices of ANC rule. Nor has the DA ever murdered African leaders. On the contrary, it is no secret that disagreeable ANC candidates are being threatened and murdered today by elements in their own party.

Zondi, who quotes the Bible extensively in his letter, appears to have been hoodwinked by ANC propaganda. If he is a Christian, he should aspire not to perpetuate a lie about the DA, but to tell the truth.

Van hulle het persoonlike ervarings met mekaar gedeel, en ek moet sê, dit het my laat dink aan gevalle waarvan ek self bewus is, selfs in verlangse famieliekringe.

Mans wat hul vrouens in ‘n oomblik van woede (of dalk dronkenskap) aanrand, of by tye net bloot net emosioneel mishandel.

Jesus wil egter hê dat ons God sal vertrou vir vandag en môre. Daarom gee Hy aan Sy volgelinge ‘n les uit die natuur. Hy wys hulle op die sorgvryheid van die voëls van die hemel en die skoonheid waarmee die blomme van die veld beklee is. God sorg uit genade vir Sy skepping.

Dis nie dat Jesus leer dat mens nie hoef te werk nie. Dis eerder dat jy met vertroue in God se voorsieni­ gheid jou werk sal doen. Is ons bekommernis nie dalk te wyte daaraan dat ons glo dat ons in beheer van die toekoms is nie? Is ons nie dalk so ingestel op die bevre­ diging van ons eie behoeftes dat ons nie meer vra wat vir God belangrik is nie? Bekommernis is ‘n mosie van wantroue wat ons in God stel.

Onthou die wyse woorde van die apostel Petrus in 1 Petrus 5:7: “Werp al jou sorge op God. Hy sal sorg.”

IBISCUS Kennel Club is once again in the news with the spectacular performance of Ninette Smith and her very little poodle Swish at the SA Championships in Gauteng.

Three members of the club Ninette, Gaby Frey and Billie Engelbrecht - travelled with their dogs in cold wet weather and competed on a very cold wet field which obviously did not faze Swish in the least as he came home having won the small dog category. This means they now have the opportunity to compete in the Agility World Championships in the Czech Republic later this year.

Last year they were in Spain as part of the team but being the winner this year means they will run as individuals as well as part of the team.

It does not end there in that Ninette and Swish are the only team from KZN and that they come from Port Shepstone where they do not have the same opportunities as teams from the big cities. Well done Ninette and Swish. We at Hibiscus Kennel Club are proud of what you have achieved.

The flyball team has been preparing for the forthcoming Kusa Classic at Shongweni this weekend. We will be competing against eight teams so need your positive thoughts as this is our first competition. Our team comprises of a Yorkie a poodle and two Border Collies who all work very well as a team.

We welcome all new members and hope that their time with us will be beneficial to both them and their dogs. The more training your dog has the more freedom it has.

Collie was taken on her first PR exercise this week and did her mom proud.

She followed commands and made friends with whoever made eye contact with her so her training and socialization has been worth it.

The heavy rain we have experienced has made the grounds a good place for geese and storks, but, fortunately the river was open so the clubhouse was not flooded and we have managed to continue with most of the training. The entrance is still very wet and we have been unable to open the boom gate making parking a bit difficult but thank you for your understanding. The gate on the road is also locked so it is either reverse all the way back or recall the three point turn you learnt so many years ago.

Post office celebrates ‘bee­eaters’ with stamps THE SA Post Office released a set of five stamps celebrating the bee­eaters, last week.

Bee­eaters are some of southern Afri­ ca’s most beautiful and interesting birds.

This made them excellent subjects for stamps.

The photographs on the stamps were taken by Chris van Rooyen, and were de­ signed by Philatelic Services. The stamps

are expected to be snapped up by stamp collectors and bird lovers.

Bee­eaters are remarkable birds. They catch insects in flight, dig tunnels in sandbanks in which they lay their eggs, and with most species the youngsters remain with their parents to bring up the next generation. Only after that do they start an independent life.

The stamps feature the little bee­

eater, Southern carmine bee­eater, swal­ lowtail bee­eater, the European bee­eat­ er and white­fronted bee­eater.

Thai­style crab balls

CRAB sticks are used in this recipe to give you crab flavour without the expense and fiddly preparation of fresh crab.

Ingredients 1 box semi­thawed Spar crab fla­ voured sticks 30 ml fish sauce 10 ml garlic and ginger fresh mix 30 ml green curry paste 15 ml Spar lemon juice 1/2 small bunch fresh dhania, finely chopped 1 large egg Sauce 250 ml vegetable stock (use ½ stock cube) 30 ml green curry paste 15 ml Spar lemon juice 250 ml Spar lite coconut milk ½ small bunch fresh dhania, finely chopped Method Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and chop until an even paste forms.

Roll level tablespoons in­ to balls and chill in a single layer on a tray for 30 min­ utes to firm up.

Bring the stock to boil in shallow pan. Add balls, simmer, for 2 minutes, gen­ tly shaking the pan to move them around in the stock.

Gently remove with a slotted spoon and transfer into individual serving bowls immediately. Keep warm.

For the sauce, pour off the stock and in the same pan, cook the curry paste in until fragrant. Add the coconut milk, lemon juice and dhania. Pour this sauce over the warm fish ball portions, and serve.

China’s best selling SUV hits SA G

WM is dead. Long live GWM. But wait – don’t stop reading.

Let’s qualify that.

Great Wall Motors’ vehicles are alive and well in South Africa, as GWM now enters its 10th year on the local market.

And what a decade it has been, with this once-unknown brand having become a respected byword for durability, value, and quality, with well over 55 000 vehicles sold through its 40-plus dealerships across the country. But now it’s fully controlled by the Chinese parent company, and the local subsidiary has been branded Haval Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd. So we can look forward to an ongoing raft of best-selling, continually updated GWM products, which includes the reintroduction of the popular H5 and H6 SUVs as well as the advent of refreshed Steed bakkie line-ups. But the big news is that premium Haval products are set to be rolled out – starting with the Haval H2 at the end of this month.

Haval, of course, is the premium

sub-brand of GWM, and while the name might still be strange to South African tongues (it rhymes with “gravel”), it’s massive in its home market of China, having achieved sales of over one-million units last year. That’s right – one million, which makes it the best-selling SUV brand in China.

Indeed, the H2 seems set to shake up the unquenchable South African market for sub-compact SUVs, with its mixture of excellent driving dynamics, slick styling, high safety levels, and superb quality inside and out. Powering the H2 is a punchy, proven 1.5-litre turbopetrol motor making 105kW and 202Nm of torque.

Drive is to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, and equipment levels are stellar, with everything from durable, man-made leather upholstery to a high-resolution touch-screen infotainment system. And reassuringly, this vehicle boasts a five-star C-NCAP rating.

But the biggest surprise with the

H2 promises to be its price, which will be announced at the launch, and which will certainly undercut the competition in this hugely popular segment. At the same time as the H2 the smaller H1 crossover will debut. Both the Haval and GWM brands seem set to soar on the value-hungry local market with a standard, five-year/100 000km warranty only sweetening the appeal of GWM’s Steed 5 D/C, Steed 6 D/C, H5 and H6 products, as well as on all Haval vehicles.

What’s more, all Haval’s come standard with five years’ road assistance. Something that’s arguably unrivalled on the SA market. The new project was launched officially on Scuderia South Africa’s social media pa­ ges last week. “This programme promises to be the start of the greater things to come,” says Jan Ungerer, COO of Scuderia South Africa.

Gauteng based applicants aged be­ tween 18­25 years were given the opportu­ nity to apply for the anticipated six month internship through South Africa’s official social media pages. To apply, users were re­ quested to post a recent photo of them­ selves next to their favourite Ferrari explain­ ing why they felt they were the ideal perfect

candidate in 200 words or less.

Aspirants from across the province ap­ plied online using the hashtag #ThePur­ suitOfExcellence in the hope of qualifying to the next level. Ten of the top applicants were then selected to commence to the in­ terview process.

The official Ferrari dealer in South Africa will afford a final two individuals the oppor­ tunity to undertake a comprehensive six month internship in both the sales and mar­ keting departments at the official Ferrari dealer.

The project is set to start in Johannesburg, but will eventually expand to the branches in Cape Town and Durban.

N the past 10 years, the number of sectional title schemes in South Africa has risen exponentially, and the latest figures show that there are currently well over 700 000 sectional title homes in the country, estimated to house more than six million people.

“What is more,” says Bill Rawson, chairman of the Rawson Property Group, “property data company Lightstone puts the total value of sectional title property at around R665 billion, so it is increasingly important for the owners of sectional title units, and the banks that hold the mortgages on 58% of them, to understand how sectional title schemes are supposed to be set up and run.

“However, there is still widespread misunderstanding of even the basics, starting with the body corporate and how it is established, as well as what its functions and powers are. And this often gives rise to many problems and disputes in sectional title schemes which could quite easily have been

avoided.”

Quite simply, he says, the body corporate of each sectional title scheme is made up of all the unit owners in that development, and it is legally responsible for the day-to-day and financial management of the scheme.

“It is established - automatically when the first unit transfer from the developer of a sectional title scheme to a new owner is registered, and then it steadily gains more members until the last unit is sold and transferred, at which point the developer or development company ceases to be a member.”

“Don’t commit to a new car unless you are sure you can afford the repayments, which will likely increase as interest rate hikes kick in,” he says.

“Hold onto your assets, ie your car, and rather repair.”

He recommends getting a second or third opinion on the repair of your current car before considering purchasing a new car. “If you can avoid taking on additional debt at this time, that is

“However, this is by no means an exhaustive list and in bigger sectional title schemes especially, it would be very impractical for every owner to be involved in day-to-day operations and decisions, so the body corporate will usually elect a smaller group of owners as trustees to act on its behalf.

“Sectional title legislation makes provision for this and gives trustees the power to make certain decisions without always having to revert back to the body corporate for a mandate.”

And by and large, he says, trustees work hard on behalf of their fellowowners and try their best to protect and enhance the value of everyone’s investment.

“But the fact remains that most are

The first rule, according to Fidelity ADT’s district manager (KwaZulu­Natal) Ivan Govender, is being aware and vigilant.

“Always park your car in a well­lit, prop­ erly secured parking area, ideally with se­

curity personnel on duty. When you leave your car, make sure the doors are locked.

Never just assume that your remote had in fact locked your doors. The extra few sec­ onds it takes to make sure the car is proper­ ly locked and secured are worth it.”

Shoppers should be careful on the way home too.

He recommends being on the lookout for anyone that could possibly be following you from the shopping centre and to drive to the closest police station or security pro­ vider guard house if there is any doubt.

“Remember the general hijacking safe­ ty tips such as waiting in the road for your house gate to open before driving in, and making sure the gate is closed properly be­ hind your vehicle before getting out,” said

NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com KWAZULU-NATAL athletes are invited to enter the sixth Nelson Mandela Day Marathon to be held on August 27 in their numbers.

This year athletes will be vying for a chance to win the R100 000 prize money in the 42km marathon from Imbali to Howick.

Entries officially opened last on 12 May and will close on July 31.

Speaking at the official launch of the Mandela Day Marathon in Howick recently, MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation in KwaZulu-Natal Bongi Sithole-Moloi encouraged KZN athletes to compete.

“Our mission as the department is to be an active and a winning province therefore the participation of KZN athletes in this marathon cannot be enough if we fail to produce winners who come from our province.

“As we call upon all athletes from different parts of the country and the world to register to participate in this marathon, we want to particularly encourage KZN athletes to register in their numbers to increase our chances of producing the majority of winners on all categories. We encourage our athletes to participate and to win.”

Sithole-Moloi said the marathon has grown since its commencement in 2012.

“Since its inception, the Nelson Mandela

Day marathon has united people from different backgrounds and has become a flagship event within the capital city and has also generated income for the local businesses and boosted the tourism industry.”

The launch was attended by various other supporting departments including Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the head of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Yase Godlo and the president of the KZN Athletics Sello Mokeona.

Race director Johan Van Staden said the focus for 2017 is to strive for perfection.

“We have had our five years of trial and error and we made a couple of mistakes but as of now we have got a whole set of committees working to ensure we strive for world class standard in 2017.

“Although we are one of the youngest in South Africa, we are growing and our presentation has improved in 2017.

“If we look at our statistics it’s been constant growth from 2012.”

This year entries will be capped at 15 050.

For all races this is up 14,3% from 2012 where it was just 1725.

From an operational point of view Van Staden said the starting times will change slightly this year with the 42 km marathon starting at 6am while the 21.1 km half-marathon, the 10km road race and the 4.66 km will all start at 5.30 am.

HE Southern KwaZulu-Natal branch of WESSA had their monthly walk in Nyandezulu on Saturday.

Organiser Paddy Norman said the four-kilometre walk, followed by lunch was a success, although not well attended.

“We walked to the Nyandezulu waterfall which was beautiful because of recent rains. One of the more peculiar sights was that in one place the river managed to turn back and ‘flow upstream’ in order to go around a rocky patch,” said Norman.

“We saw a number of birds, ranging from two eagles to a tiny waxbill. The flowers on the cliffs were Aloe arborescens, and there was a nice variety of other trees and grasses,” said Norman.

He said the event is organised by WESSA to get people to experience nature.

“Wildlife is getting thinner due to poaching and people just removing a lot of natural resources to make way for other things. This is very sad because we actually depend on nature,” said Norman.

“It is important for people to realise that they are a part of nature and if one has a problem with the environment then essentially they have a problem with themselves,” he said. The next walk will be to the Umtamvuna River.

HEY say it is never over until the last putt drops, and that proved the case in this year’s SA Country Districts as KwaZulu-Natal fought their way from the bottom of the log to claim A-division victory at San Lameer Country Club last Friday.

After two days lost to unrelenting rain pounding the South Coast and rendering the course unplayable, the championship finally got under way on Wednesday, May 15.

“We had a first round bye, so the guys who played in the morning were nicely warmed up,” said KwaZulu-Natal manager, Wynand de Swardt.

“We were pretty confident going up against North West province in the second round, but came out guns blazing after beating Free State 6.5-5.5.

“We made the worst start imaginable to our title bid when we lost 7.5-4.5 and we knew we needed two very strong performances on Thursday to have any hope of saving our campaign. I asked the guys to dig us deep as they could, and boy, did they deliver,” said De Swardt.

KwaZulu-Natal whipped Mpumalanga 8-4 in the morning and mowed down Free State 7.5-4.5 to rocket to the top of the log.

“We managed to secure four points and we edged out North West for the number one spot on games points,” said De Swardt.

“We had 20 to their 19 games points, so it was tight and Mpumalanga was also still in the running.

“They were tied with Free State on three points, but Free State had a final round bye, so it was between the three teams. And Mpumalanga had 21.5 games points.

“There was a serious mood in the camp, because the team knew that the fight was far from over.

“We needed to win our last match and we needed to win big to beat North West and Mpumalanga on games points if it came down to a count-out.”

KwaZulu-Natal went up against Boland, while North West faced Mpumalanga on the final day.

The men in black struck gold in their first foursomes game, but lost the next two and the final game was halved.

“It was a great moment when we got to lift the shield. That moment signified all the blood, sweat and tears it took those eight players to fight from the bottom of the log to victory. The quality of golf at this year’s interprovincial was simply outstanding and our players showed a lot of character to turn things around.

There were eight heroes at San Lameer and they all deserve credit for our success,” said De Swardt. – Supplied.
