ENYAN Professor, Patrick Lumumba, received a friendly welcome from the Kokstad community and local politicians when he delivered his address at the Memorial Lecture to the Department of Education event at the Bhongweni Youth Centre on February 27. Education officials, teachers, politicians, and the community were invited to the event and listened attentively to the professor’s words as he looked back and commented on how the education system has changed. Teachers from schools in the Kokstad circuit were also awarded for their commitment to education at the event. In his address, he shared thoughts on African values, self-assurance, and the importance of democracy and education. He also encouraged residents to be cautious of being influenced by other societies who degrade their way of living. “I remember the when I was a young boy, when I approached a teacher I used to salute the teacher to show respect. In the classroom, we used to greet the teacher with respect, however today teachers are not given the respect they require,” said Lumumba, adding that teachers are even being abused and assaulted, and they are not paid enough. He said that teachers also play the role of a parent, and honouring teachers needs to be done in full view of everyone, not just behind the scenes. Lumumba said education humbles individuals and teaches them better ways of doing things.

Woman arrested for false pretence A 29-YEAR-old woman was arrested for pretending to be a staff member at a Kokstad retail store on February 24. It was reported that the suspect was caught by Kokstad police after she robbed a woman who wanted to buy a laptop at the store. SAPS spokesperson Ngenzeni Mdlophane said that on the day of crime the woman was approached by the suspect while looking for a new laptop in the shop. She asked the woman to go outside with her so she could get the laptop at a cheaper price. When they went outside, the suspect asked the customer to give her R5 000 so she could get the laptop at a low price. While sitting next to the bank, they met four other women who are also suspected to be criminals. Mdlophane said: “The suspect left the victim with four other women next to the bank to get the laptop she wanted, but she never returned. “When the four women discovered that the suspect was not coming back, they told the woman to leave her bag with them and go fetch the suspect from the shop. “When she returned to the same place where she left her bag, the four women had already disappeared,” said Mdlophane. Fortunately the suspect was pointed out by the victim on the same day, and she was arrested. Kokstad police have established investigations to find the other four women who are linked to the case. — Supplied

KOKSTAD police have arrested a 39-year-old soccer fan for attempted murder, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition on Saturday, February 29. It was alleged that the suspect was watching a football match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on television with his friends in the Kokstad CBD. When the first goal was scored, he fired a gunshot in the air as a way of celebrating, and also showed one of his friends how to operate a firearm. Unexpectedly, the firearm shot his friend on the left knee and his friend was taken to hospital in Kokstad. The suspect was arrested on the same day and he appeared at the Kokstad Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week. Blocked stormwater drain causes overflowing SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.con A STORMWATER drain in Kokstad that goes from Coulter Street down to Mundell Drive and ends at Elliot Street is filled with debris and residents have recently complained that it gets blocked on rainy days, causing water to overflow into their yards. A resident who has been living in Elliot Street for many years said that the stormwater drain is seemingly neglected by the municipality, after he reported it a long time ago. On the other side of Mundell Drive, debris could be seen by a Fever reporter on Tuesday. The concerned resident said that the debris was caused by the cutting of trees in September last year. “Municipal workers were seen cutting trees in the area and dumped

trees in the drain. I asked them to remove the trees but my plea was not considered. “When the rain comes, my yard and my neighbour’s yard gets flooded because of the blocked stormwater drain,” said the concerned resident. In response, the Greater Kokstad Municipality spokesperson Nthabeleng Matshoba said that the municipality is aware of the problem and it was cleaned before the end of last year. She said the municipality will attend to the current complaints at the concerned stormwater drain soon. She further said that grass cutters are being monitored by team leaders so as not to dump debris in stormwater drains, this was after residents claimed that stormwater drains get blocked by grass.

Retailer helps community ‘grow’ W

HEN Nombuso Hlophe’s mother started a vegetable garden in 2010, she knew that she had to help but was not sure how profitable it would be or whether they would be able to support others in their community. With Shoprite Store on board as a partner, she is now learning how to turn their food garden into a thriving business. Hlophe (34) and her mother (57), Mellie Blose living in rural KwaZuluNatal near the town of Harding have established the Nqabeni Project which involves poultry, flower and vegetable farming. “I was making enough [money from selling poultry], so when my mother needed assistance with the garden I wanted to make sure we could make some money and help our neighbours too,” said Hlophe. She and her mother grow vegetables on a small patch of land behind their house. She is also using the front yard to grow flowers. She said that they sell curry leaves, spinach, onions, flowers and cabbage to people in the area and also donate to the old-age home. The high unemployment rate in the area means many community members started their own gardens to sustain themselves and their families. Last year, the Nqabeni Project togeth-

er with other home gardens in the area started receiving gardening tools, educational material, seedlings and compost from the Shoprite Store. The retailer is on a mission to fight hunger across South Africa since 2015 has partnered with more than 100 community gardens as well as 347 home gardens, benefitting more than 23 000 people. Ongoing training workshops form part of this extensive support. “Every month, the trainers come to teach us how to farm and they taught us how to make beds, how to use mulch and they are also teaching us how to save water,” Hlophe elaborated. Another community is benefitting from Shoprite’s investment in food gardens. Thenjiwe Mkani (47) and four other women from her village have been sustaining their garden since 2012. “We started with nothing and now we have a garden that we all benefit from. We also give vegetables to those who can’t afford to buy from us or from the shops,”said Mkani who started the Mkani Food Garden. With assistance from Shoprite, she and her team are able to expand their food garden, as the retailer has provided them with proper water infrastructure, fencing, gardening equipment, seedlings, compost and mulch. new methods to other people in the community as there are a few who want to start their own gardens,” concluded Mkani. — Supplied

“For the past four years we have been witnessing residents struggling to get water and now we decided to do something. “The project began two weeks ago, and will enable us build a borehole which will provide water to a large number of residents,” said Amod. The total needed for the project is R150 000. Amod said they are also in talks with the local municipality to identify a site where they can build the borehole, suggesting that it should be closer to residents.

“In 2016 we built a borehole in KwaMazakhele assisted by the Al-Imdaad Foundation and that one is only providing water to KwaMazakhele residents, not the entire community of Harding,” added Amod. Recently, the Harding community protested against the water shortage in the CBD, however the Ugu District Municipality has blamed the problem on the labour unrest which caused the disruptions of water supply. “Harding dams that have low water levels are also a result of water shortages in Harding, Amod said.

UMZ VIEWPOINT Greetings to all

ZWELIPHANSI SKHOSANA MUNICIPAL MANAGER

PAUPERS’ FUNERALS People who are unfortunately found dead in our communities are kept in the government mortuary for a certain period while relatives and families are being tracked by relevant state security agencies. If they remain unclaimed after some years, and all avenues have been explored, they are cremated by the state through the Department of

Health. For the first time in the history of this rural town, a collaboration between Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, Department of Health, SAPS, Umzimkhulu Council of Churches and other relevant stakeholders embarked on a programme whereby the unclaimed bodies were given a proper funeral at the Umzimkhulu cemetery. This reveals a matured and caring leadership from all parties involved.

UMZIMKHULU SPECIAL COUNCIL For the municipality to be vibrant and continue creating an enabling environment for service delivery, a political oversight by the council is vitally important. It is on that note that after all municipal units have met through their respective departments, on budget adjustment programme, the consolidated proposed budget adjustment be approved by the council. A special council meeting was con-

vened by the speaker, primarily to approve the proposed budget adjustment. We can thus far boast about the level of accountability to the council by the administrative wing of this municipality. We therefore would like to express our sincere gratitude towards our personnel for working tirelessly, regardless of any hindrances encountered along the way. Till we meet again.

GKM VIEWPOINT LULAMILE MAPHOLOBA GREATER KOKSTAD MUNICIPAL MANAGER

WARM greetings to the Kokstad community. MEC FOR TRANSPORT APPROVES AN INCREASE IN MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND LICENCE FEES FOR THE PROVINCE OF KWAZULUNATAL The KZN Department of Transport mandated by Kwa-Zulu Natal Road Traffic Act, 1997 (act no 7 of 1997):

would like to inform the Greater Kokstad Residents that the MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal has recently approved an increase in motor vehicle registration and licence fees for the province of KwaZulu-Natal to come into effect from April 1, 2020. Copies of the licence fees table are obtainable on the municipal website as per the Provincial Gazette: no 2158, dated January 23, 2020. Please be advised that fees contained in schedule 2 (Registration and License Fees) are subject to the increase, including specially classified vehicles. Other fees e.g. miscellaneous fees, MTN fees, permits etc. will remain unchanged. UPDATE ON STATE OF KOKSTAD ROADS I would like to take this opportunity and give an update on what the municipali-

ty is doing in improving the state of the internal roads and streets in Kokstad. As the municipality we are aware of the community’s concerns around this matter. From the entrance coming from N2; Railway Street up to the Avenue (Hope Street), that part of the road belongs to the Department of Transport, however, the municipality has been working on the street to patch potholes which unfortunately doesn’t last long because of the inclement weather. According to the Department of Transport, if they stick to their annual plan, this part of the road (from Railway Street to the Avenue) will be upgraded this year starting from April 2020. The municipality has its own plan in place for the rehabilitation of Kokstad roads starting within the CBD area. The following roads will be rehabilitated

and are budgeted for in the current financial year: Strachan Street for 650m, Brownlee Road for 350m, Ziestman Street for 250m and Nkuloleko Road 600m. The total budget set aside for all the above-mentioned roads is R4.8 million. The contractor is already on site and municipality will continue with the rehabilitation of roads in the next financial year 2020/2021. The identified roads include Barker Street, Dower Street and Coulter Street. From Main to Hawthorne Street the assessment process of these are underway pending the budget processes and approval. The municipality will update the community with new developments on these projects. TEMPORARY FAX NUMBER AND FIRE DEPARTMENT NUMBER FOR GKM

How graduates can get ahead in the job market TECHNICAL skills are always important, but alone they are no longer sufficient for ambitious graduates seeking to build a successful career, an education expert says. “The ability to get on well with people and actively build relationships among all role-players and stakeholders is now more important than ever, and absolutely essential for those graduates seeking to distinguish themselves in the job market,” says Wonga Ntshinga, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education. “It is essential for all graduates to exercise their muscle when it comes to working well with your team, fostering cohesion and communicating effectively,” he says. Ntshinga says there are four competencies that support the effective performance and career growth of graduates beyond their field of academic expertise. COMMUNICATION “Effective communication is perhaps the most important competency to develop, because it is one that is not readily replaceable by technology,” Ntshinga says. “Communicating effectively allows you to build relationships, listen carefully, influence matters and build empathy.” Ntshinga says graduates should aim to use, as far as possible, simple language devoid of jargon when com-

municating with colleagues. “If you are in technical field, use standard terminology and use the appropriate terms correctly. As a graduate, you need to learn how to clearly communicate your messages to your colleagues and management, as miscommunication has the potential to negatively affect even the execution of your work and projects.” Ntshinga adds that it is essential that graduates understand they will be working with multiple people across multiple projects. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPBUILDING Related to the above, graduates must develop how they relate to colleagues, managers and customers. “Also called enduring skills or soft skills, developing your ability to build relationships will help you become tactful, diplomatic, and eventually an excellent negotiator and mediator – all traits that are in high demand in our increasingly race, age, gender and culturally diverse workplaces,” he says. ANALYTICAL SKILLS The willingness and ability to problem-solve issues in the workplace is a major competitive advantage, says Ntshinga. “Set yourself apart by trying to find solutions, rather than simply pointing out problems and waiting for others to solve them. When faced with complex problems, break the main issues down into smaller components, and

start where you can.” BUSINESS ACUMEN Do as much as you can to develop beyond your current position, Ntshinga advises. “You need to study and understand the trade of your organisation - its clients, staff and stakeholders. You need to demonstrate expert insight into aspects of the business outside of your area of expertise, and understand the broader operating environment. You also need to constantly develop your complementary skills, for instance by doing related short courses, to remain competitive. By merely knuckling down and focusing on your daily tasks alone, you limit your resilience and ability to adapt to new roles if changes are introduced in the business.” In today’s competitive environment, with many graduates competing for limited positions and career advancement opportunities, employers naturally seek those graduates who can offer the full package, and get on with the job from day one without needing to be micro-managed, Ntshinga says. “If you are able to demonstrate your ongoing commitment to personal and professional development beyond the subject expertise you gained as a graduate, you will effectively boost your personal brand and position yourself strongly to advance your career. — Supplied

KOKSTAD street bash was held at the town’s railway station on Saturday, February 29. There was the smell of rubber, the shrieking of tyres and joy at the event. Spinners entertained the crowd with their stunts which most definitely should not be tried at home. The event was organised by the Kokstad Street Crew spinners.

“A People-Centred City of Economic Possibilities by 2047”

CHILDREN who live on the streets of Kokstad have walked away with packs of groceries and clothes donated by the United Methodist Church, Mount Currie circuit on Sunday, March 1. The church’s Sunday school teachers, Veronica Nqasha and Mana Khamshe, collected old clothes from individuals assisted by Sunday school children to help the children who are homeless and poor. “Seven children who live on the streets were given groceries and clothes at a Sunday service and this was part of preaching the word of God. “They were identified by members of the church,” said Nqasha, who was one of the congregants that conducted the programme of helping street children. She said that the programme was initiated last year to show love to children and to keep them off the streets. She said that the church also donated groceries to six needy families. “The church decided to give street kids groceries rather than money, because we suspected that they will use the money to buy alcohol or drugs,” she said.

SCHOOL SCENE Stakeholders warn pupils on crime P

UPILS at Hlangwini Senior Secondary School in Matatiele were informed about the dangers of crime by stakeholders who visited their school on February 20, including ex-offender Katleho Moletsane who urged pupils to refrain from criminal activities. The crime awareness programme was organised by government departments including the Department of Safety and Liaison, the Department of Correctional Services, SAPS, Department of Social Development and the Department of Education. The programme was held after the school complained about crime, dangerous weapons that were carried into the school by pupils, fights among pupils and the use of dagga. The Eastern Cape Department of Safety and Liaison Acting Provincial Head Zukile Kani said the aim of the programme was to teach pupils to stay away from crime and instil a culture of teaching and learning. He said the most prevalent crimes in the area are stock theft, attempted murder, murder, rape and assaults.

Representatives from the Umzimkhulu Municipality led by the deputy mayor Sindisiwe Nkala, along with representatives from MTN visited the schools where they handed over uniforms, school shoes, school bags, and books to 50 pupils from both schools. “It is important to prioritise education in everything and to motivate pupils as well. We would like to thank MTN for working with the municipality,” said Nkala.

Corona virus: SA, don’t panic S

UPERMARKET and pharmacy shelves across China are left bare as people scramble to lay their hands on basic necessities, medicines and foodstuff as fears mount that the Coronavirus could drag on. Panic buying has also set in among Americans, where pharmacies are selling out of face masks. Sellers on Amazon cannot keep up with the demand and say deliveries will be delayed for weeks. In the UK too, the Brits are stocking up on so-called “panic boxes” where sales of long-life emergency food and drink supplies have spiked by more than 1 200%. By mid-February, sales of an over-the-counter na-

sal spray (that powder-coats the nasal membranes, making it difficult for airborne viruses to enter the body) had surged by 688% on Amazon in the UK. According to Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics, there is no need for panic buying at this stage. “Hoarding face masks for example, when one is healthy means that hospitals, clinics and doctors’ rooms – where it is needed most – could run out. There have also been news reports of potential medicine shortages, which have led to panic ordering and buying of antibiotics worldwide, which is unwarranted.

Fires and fire safety – what you can do to keep your loved ones safe SMOKE alarms and fire detection measures are not nearly as common in South African homes as they should be, and this is something that deserves attention. That is the warning that has been issued by Fidelity Fire Solutions, a division of the Fidelity Services Group. “Household fires are often caused by accident or by some kind of careless lapse of concentration. If proper warning measures are put in place, these small flames can be detected and extinguished long before they cause big damage,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager for the Fidelity Services Group. The group’s armed response officers, she adds, have responded to a number of incidents where customers have reported flames or fires at home. This includes candles that have been knocked over by accident, or flames in outdoor braai areas or thatched roofs. Other causes of household fires include worn out electrical wires and appliances, unattended heaters, electric blankets, children playing with matches, gas leaks and burning oil left unattended on a stove. “We recommend installing smoke alarms that are linked and monitored to your armed response service prothe event of a fire emer-vider. You will have peace of gency, when every secondmind that help is on its way in counts,” says Hattingh. She explains there are a number of do’s and don’ts to consider:

DON’T: • Leave a burning candle, heater, pot of oil or fire unattended • Pack up your personal belongings before getting to safety • Try to put an oil fire out with water • Open a door which is hot to the touch • Go back into the house if you’ve made it outside safely • Go into a room that is on fire “Fire safety is complex but there are certain basic concepts that help prevent the start and spread of fires. Fires can be deadly and devastating. We encourage everyone to spend a bit of time thinking about fire prevention and taking steps to ensure their loved ones are protected,” she says. — Supplied

“The widespread anxiety that the Coronavirus has caused is understandable, and the public needs to be vigilant, but the situation in SA doesn’t call for panic. “Antibiotics aren’t effective for treating the Coronavirus and should only be used in case of bacterial infections. Misuse of antibiotics leads to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – another epidemic, which the healthcare community are trying to tackle. Life-saving antibiotics should thus be used sparingly and responsibly. “When antibiotics are prescribed, never share it with someone else who is sick and don’t ever skip a dose. This is my biggest testimony ever in my life, I am Mr Nhlanhla Zakwe, I am staying in Johannesburg at Sandton, I want to thank sister Thabisile Ngcobo for connecting me to BABA KHUMALO, I have been living my life full of different problems of which one of them is that my first wife got me arrested for 3years whereby I ended up losing my everything, when I was out my life was disturbed such that it was hard for me to start life again since everything was complicated, I don’t mean that I was bankrupt to the extent of failing to have an amount of R50 000 but that my standard of living was lower than before and then I stayed for couple of days lamenting and thinking of how to get myself back to my previous living standard, luckily enough I saw posts on newspaper Isolezwe and Ilanga where by sister Thabisile Ngcobo was talking about BABA KHUMALO and at first I neglected the posts since they were on newspaper and I was a person who didn’t believe in this, by the end I decided to call BABA KHUMALO for more information about his job and after that he asked me to choose but getting money into my account or direct into my house and I choose it to be in my house and then how asked me to send money R1500 for nkanyiso and I asked him how could I send money to a person that I haven’t seen before and he said it was my choice to take it or leave it, after some days of doubting I agreed with him and I saw money like I am dreaming such that I even thought that the money would vanish but it didn’t such that I’ am now living a better life than before and I now want to let others know about this because if not for sister Thabisile, I would be suffering by now, thanks to sister Thabisile together with BABA KHUMALO, this good thing you’ve done for me do it for others as well, I am not jealous, please call: 066 013 8905 for BABA KHUMALO.
