Scrap yard owners released ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com TWO suspects who were due to appear briefly before the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with theft of railway lines and railway sleepers were instead released as the case was reportedly not on the court roll.

The two men, aged 31 and 59 respectively, who are reportedly owners of a scrap yard situated in Durban, were arrested on February 6 after the police found railway tracks and railway sleepers at the scrap yard.

The goods are valued at approximately R8 million and the men were arrested in Greytown.

The men were kept in police cells while waiting for their appearance in court, but were later released due to lack of evidence linking them to the crime.

The Gazette has since established that the Hawks have taken over the investigation.

Railway tracks and sleepers that were found at a scrap yard in Maydon Wharf last week.

According to the police, members of the Provincial Non-Ferrous Task Team had received information about the suspected stolen Transnet infrastructure at the scrap yard in Maydon Wharf in Durban.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said: “During the night the team began following up on leads with regards to the stolen railway tracks and railway sleepers.

“On Friday morning the team was joined by officials from Transnet, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa)

and Telkom. They proceeded to the identified bulk metal scrapyard and discovered tons of railway lines and railway sleepers on the site.

“The items were positively identified by a representative of Transnet as belonging to them.” Naicker said the employees who were at the premises when the police moved in on the scrap yard were questioned with regards to the property.

“They produced documentation which indicated that the items were authorised for sale by Prasa.

“The letter was sent to the Prasa head office for verification and it was established that the letter was fraudulent.

“A total of 181 tons of Transnet infrastructure was seized by police. The items have an estimated value of R8 million.

“Further investigation led police to a scrap yard located in Greytown which revealed that the railway lines were removed from Greytown.

Attempts to get a comment from the Hawks was not successful at the time of going to press.

‘You don’t need to be a doctor to help save a life’ ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com INTERNATIONAL Childhood Cancer Day, commemorated on February 15, aims to raise awareness about childhood cancer, and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer, the survivors and their families.

To encourage residents to unite and fight against the stigma attached to cancer, Greytown resident Nabeelah Nabee from Cupcakes of Hope appealed to the community to support the International Childhood Cancer Day fundraiser that will be held at Aheers Super-

market this Saturday, February 15.

“It’s quite easy to save a life and it only takes a little bit of your time.

You don’t have to be a paramedic or a doctor, you can buy a cupcake to support a community fundraiser driven to aid children fighting cancer nationwide,” she said.

About 300 000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year.

“Childhood cancer is cancer in a child up to the age of 14 years old.

The average age of children diagnosed is six. More than 40 000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year,” she said.

According to the South African Cancer Association, between 800

to 1 000 children in the country are diagnosed with cancer each year.

CANSA said stigma, myths and a lack of knowledge about the disease are the main contributing factors leading to the spread of cancer.

“In 2016, ambient and household air pollution caused 543 000 deaths in children under five and 52 000 deaths in children aged between five and 15 years old.

“A child who is exposed to unsafe levels of pollution can face a lifetime of health impacts.

“Exposure in the womb or in early childhood can lead to stunted lung growth, impaired mental and motor development, low birth weight, childhood cancers, and in-

creased risk of heart diseases and strokes in adulthood,” Nabee said.

Other risk factors include genetics, exposure to infections, certain medical conditions, environmental factors, stress, and problems with development in the womb.

“Today the overall five-year survival rate for childhood cancer is close to 80%. Not all childhood cancers are known to have such successful survival rates. Unfortunately, many types of childhood cancers continue to have a poor five-year prognosis.

“Let’s work together and fight cancer, spread awareness and save lives.

“Together we can support the

fighters, admire the survivors, honour the taken and never give up,” she added.

‘Not reporting the death of a child to still collect grant is fraud’ — Sassa THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned parents to stop withdrawing social grant payments for deceased infants.

This is as a result of a tip-off by some community members that there are still some parents who are collecting grant payments for these children instead of reporting their death to Home Affairs.

This fraudulent act happens when the child passes on a few weeks or months after birth.

Parents bury the child without

informing Home Affairs.

Unreported death and burial is illegal.

Sassa’s and Home Affairs’ systems are linked/interface on a population register of the country.

Parents are warned not to continue with fraudulent activities, profiting on the loss of a child.

It is insensitive and also a criminal offence which will lead to arrest and prosecution by law enforcement institutions.

When a child passes on, parents must report the death to

Home Affairs and Sassa will pick up that information and stop the grant immediately.

Sassa is urging the public to uphold moral values and good cultural practices of Ubuntubotho.

The public is also encouraged to continue to report fraudsters.

Theft continues to impact cellular networks ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com A TOTAL of 57 cellphone tower batteries were stolen in KwaZulu-Natal in January alone.

The theft of these batteries leads to thousands of people and businesses battle with network problems.

Last year, police seized a total of 23 cellphone tower batteries and cables that had been stolen by criminals in New Hanover in November, however, between January and December 2019, MTN recorded more than 2 000 incidents of battery theft, with a total of 13 450 batteries stolen.

Speaking about the issue, MTN Public Relations Specialist Mthokozisi Ndlovu said: “The battle is far from over in the fight to recover stolen cell tower batteries, prevent cell tower damage and reduce cable theft.

“Despite a fall in the number of cell tower battery theft incidences in August and September last year, increased inci-

dences of theft and damage [were reported] between October to December and early in 2020.”

On Sunday, MTN subscribers in the Umvoti area were left without access to the network.

In January, 703 batteries were reportedly stolen with a total of 122 incidents.

Ndlovu said the installation of hightech security measures and more onthe-ground security initiated last year seemingly decreased theft and vandalism incidents.

“The reality is that criminal syndicates are finding ways around the security measures and this has again raised the bar for the industry and the public, [who we are calling on to work] handin-hand with law enforcement and security companies, to work even harder to fight back.

“Total battery theft decreased to less than 1 000 in both August and September last year following a concerted awareness drive and enhanced security measures,” he added.

A total of 338 batteries worth R4 mil-

lion were also recovered in July, with an additional 275 batteries, worth almost R3 million, recovered in September.

MTN is not the only cellular network that is struggling with this issue.

Vodacom said in a statement: “There has been a significant increase year-onyear in the number of battery thefts in our base stations, with the average increase at around 35%.

“For instance, an average of 553 incidents per month are recorded where sites have been affected by theft or damage. We are also seeing cases were the site has been damaged beyond economical repair.

“Cellular base stations are the only form of connectivity available to many communities, and when criminals target these base stations to steal diesel, power cables and batteries, they can cut off hundreds if not thousands of people.

“Each theft incident can result in the network in that area being down for days, and this can severely impact businesses as well as anyone relying on the internet to study.

“It can also cause ecological damage as vandalism can result in diesel spillage.

“We repeatedly see situations where people can’t make emergency calls and are put in danger by these criminals and sooner or later these criminals will cost someone’s life.”

Like MTN, Vodacom said they have put plans in place to try and reduce and prevent the further theft of their infrastructure.

“We have ramped up the fight against this criminal activity, implementing new measures to make sure that the thieves are caught and prosecuted.

“We are working closely with law enforcement agencies and security companies to arrest thieves for prosecution,” said the cellular network.

Community projects worth over R9 million launched in Umvoti ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com MORE than R9 million will be injected into community projects in the Umvoti Local Municipality. The projects will see the construction of community halls in Ward 12 and Ward 14 respectively.

This emerged at the launch of the construction on Thursday, February 6.

The first project will kick off this month in the Msengeni area in Ngome.

An amount of R6,6 million will be

spent on the construction of a new, state-of-the-art community hall that will serve the more than 3 000 residents of Ngome and Mabomvini.

The project is anticipated to create job opportunities for locals, including the youth.

While addressing the public at the sod turning ceremony, the mayor of Umvoti Local Municipality, Thami Ngubane, introduced the contractors of the project.

He also urged the community to take ownership of these two community infrastructure projects and protect them

from vandalism.

The second project involves the construction of a community hall at Kwa­Hlalaphansi at Nqoleni.

The construction of this community hall, at an estimated cost of R4 million, is expected to take six months.

This project will create job opportunities for the local community, which has a high unemployment rate.

Each project will create ten general worker and two security guard positions as well as one community liaison officer position.

Ngubane said the launch of these projects was in line with government’s plan to restore human dignity to previously disadvantaged communities.

He said that in 2016 the community of KwaHlalalaphansi outlined its top priorities, which included the construction of a community hall.

Ngubane said that after evaluating the priority list proposed by the community at the time, the municipality, after carefully considering the community’s needs, decided to launch the construction of the two community halls.

Artist shares his passion for music with new single

Entrepreneur takes her future into her hands ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com AFTER struggling to find a job for over four years, and battling with depression as a result, Kalina Moodley decided to start a nail salon for the Greytown community in December last year.

Moodley is now the founder and owner of Butterfly Angels, a fullservice salon that offers massages, waxing, facials and more.

“I was diagnosed with cancer, and I couldn’t get a job. I was sinking into depression, so I decided to do something.

“The idea to start this business was an overnight plan. I realised that Greytown doesn’t have many nail businesses, so I grabbed the opportunity with both hands because I knew I was good with my hands when it comes to body massages,” said Moodley.

After graduating from Greytown Secondary, Moodley studied psychology at Unisa.

“I graduated from Unisa in 2018. but was unable to get a job.

“My biggest goal is to offer unique services to the community of Greytown.

“My mother is my source of inspiration because she has been with

me from the beginning and supported my ideas,” said Moodley.

The entrepreneur is optimistic that her new business will grow and generate more income.

“In the future I want to do more in a better place. I dream of lifting myself up and getting better,” she said.

Moodley also enjoys being a motivational speaker.

“When I happen to be around people in hospitals, I motivate the patients and encourage them — telling them that being in hospital does not mean the end of the world.

I always tell them that there is sunshine after the storm,” she said.

ASPIRING Maskandi artist S’fani Mbatha released his single track Ungishiyile recently.

Mbatha, who grew up in the Ngcengeni Village, said his love of Maskandi began when he was 10years-old and a pupil at Themane Primary School. He said he was inspired to make music by the late Maskandi artist Mgqumeni Khumalo, who passed away in 2009.

“Khumalo inspired me to forage further and work harder to achieve my goals,” he said.

After Khumalo’s death, Mbatha followed in his footsteps.

Ngubane became my new role model after Khumalo passed away,” he said.

“I was privileged to spend time with Mlindeni Mvelase, [a Maskandi artist] who was affectionately known as ‘Seven’ in the music industry. In 2014 he helped me learn the ropes in the music industry, such as the art of playing a guitar.

“In 2015 I released my first album, titled Road Accident, featuring Lungelo Mvelase. In 2018 I met Syabonga Mchunu from Amachophanzipho. Thereafter I joined his company and released a few tracks, including Olwethu­, Amachophanzipho, Young Dog, and Ingqongqo,” he said.

THE Natal Off Road Motor Club (NORMC) will be hosting their first race of the season at the Jondol on the Mispah Road in the Greytown area on March 14.

The event was successfully held last year and all the competitors commented on the excellent route as well as the venue and expressed their interest in returning again this year.

The event won the Best Regional Event of the year at the recent NORMC annual general meeting.

The event’s main goal is to expose the people of Greytown and surrounding areas to the adrenalinefilled sport of off road racing as well as afford local businesses an opportunity to showcase some of their products to the competitors and spectators.

SPORT NEWS St Cathryn’s news THE most beautiful rain fell over the weekend with 68 mm of rain measured.

The greens had a slight verticutting, fertilizer was applied and then the rain fell.

In exciting news for Hermannsburg pupils and St Cathryn’s members, two PGA professionals, Marc Alexander and Ryan Kimber, have joined Hermannsburg School to run their academy from St Cathryn’s.

Here is an introduction from Alexander: “My name is Marc Alexander, I am a PGA professional from Johannesburg and, with my colleague Ryan Kimber, also a PGA professional, we will be starting the golf academy for Hermannsburg School. We have both worked in different facets of the golf industry.

“Kimber started his career in golf as an apprentice at Eye of Africa, where I was employed as well, he then moved to Els Club at Copperleaf as a shop assistant. Kimber moved to the retail business as a hard-lines sales consultant at The Pro Shop where he completed his degree and graduated as a Class A full member PGA professional. I myself started at Eye of Africa as well where I completed my degree with the PGA and went from an apprentice to head professional before moving on. The next chapter for me saw me take on the role of assistant golf director at The Country Club Johannesburg (CCJ). While at CCJ, I worked closely with the PGA and soon upgraded to AA Professional.

“Both Kimber and I have a great passion for coaching and working with people in helping them improve their game as well as their understanding of the game. We look forward to working with both Hermanns-

burg School and St Cathryn’s Estate in order to make the academy a great success.”

We will let golfers know when the academy will be open for lessons with the pros.

St Cathryn’s members are looking forward to upgrading their golfing skills.

Over the weekend, one of our previous members, Russel Wulfsohn, turned 60, and at the gathering of friends it was like a Greytown reunion. Carl Goenewald, past chairman of the notorious “Dirty Dozen” and current St Cathryn’s golf member, was present and shared many fun stories of the famous club that roamed the Umvoti District in the late eighties and nineties.

Other members present were John Odendaal, Eddie Conradie (a past St Cathryn’s club champion) and Pete Clark. Clark was never a golf member but one will remember Stan Clark — who is his father. Stan played at St Cathryn’s.

Other old Greytownians, but younger in age, were Janet McBain (daughter of John Martens) as well as Sharon Butler née Northmore. Later we bumped into Rupert Gebers at the Hilton tennis club. Gebers was also a small farmer and very big timber contractor in the Greytown area.

Wulfsohn made St Cathryn’s very famous as he was involved in one of the longest golf games ever of six hours for 18 holes — imagine Mo Wulfsohn’s comment on that!

The next Farmers Agri-care Monthly Mug will be played on Saturday, February 22 — come rub shoulders with the PGA professionals.

International botanist at AGM IT is with great delight that Greytown Garden Club will be hosting internationally acclaimed botanist, landscaper, lecturer and former curator of Durban Botanic Gardens, Chris Dalzell of Chris Dalzell International, as the presenter at the Annual General Meeting, set to take place on February 18 from 9 am.

The beautifully manicured, peaceful garden of Deon and Esther van Rooyen at 260 Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi/Pine Street will provide abundant shade and cool space as a perfect venue to escape the February heat and enjoy this meeting.

Garden Club members and interested members of the public are encouraged to attend this very interesting, illustrated presentation by an exceptionally talented, soughtafter speaker.

Having studied, worked and lectured both locally and internationally, including initiating the South African exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show, for which he was awarded two silver gilt and one gold between 2007 and 2009, Dalzell has, for over three decades, been a well-respected name in gardening circles.

During his 30-year tenure at the Durban Botanic Gardens, where he was in charge of special collections, Dalzell travelled extensively, visiting 62 countries lecturing, fundraising and plant-sourcing.

In 1994 Dalzell was appointed curator of the Durban Botanic Gardens, a position he held until 2010 when he left to take up the position as assistant director of development of the $1 billion Gardens at the Bay project in Singapore.

For two and a half years, Dalzell was responsible for the design and implementation of the conservancies and for sourcing plants for this world renowned botanic project.

Greytown Garden Club is honoured to be hosting a speaker of this calibre, therefore, the committee urges all members and any interested people to join us for this meeting.

Members and guests are asked to please bring chairs to sit on and to be punctual as the meeting will begin promptly at 9.30 am followed by the presentation by Dalzell.

Greytown Country Club news ACCORDING to the available records, the golf section of Greytown Country Club was founded 125 years ago. To celebrate this momentous milestone in the history of the club, and indeed of Greytown and the greater Umvoti District, our own resident Dutch golfer and golf committee member, Peter Caljouw, suggested that the club stage a proam golf tournament, and this is exactly what is going to happen on Monday, February 17.

This will be the first time an event as prestigious as this, in golfing terms, will take place in the Umvoti District.

The format of a pro-am golf tournament is that one professional golfer teams up with three amateur golfers.

There will be eleven teams competing and the format will be four ball alliance.

Each team bears the name of its local sponsor; them being Mascor, Plennegy, Pannar, Bracken Timbers, CPS Seedlings, Rhino

Charcoal/Umvoti Tyres and Batteries, Aheers Power Trade/Coca Cola/Bobby Pearson Commodity Brokers, E&C Charcoal, NTE, Pidelta, and Engen. Any amateur golfer who achieves a hole-in-one will win R100 000, courtesy of Santam.

The development golf members of the club who are not playing in a team are very excited, as they will be caddies for the professionals, which will be a unique experience for them. David’s Midas is sponsoring their outfits.

Spectators are welcome to follow the professionals and see how experts ply their trade. Play will start at 10 am.
