selves to help our school out without compensation are a real blessing unto us. We are so appreciative of them, they have been here since the beginning of term and have maintained law and order in our school,” said Haythorne principal Mr Diaz.

One of the members who have been patrolling the school since the beginning of the year, Rachel Hemmend, said that since they embarked on this initiative, apart from policing drugs and bad behaviour, pupils have been helped with their personal problems as well.

“Various learners have been helped through what we are doing, and we encourage parents in other government schools to do the same in

their schools,” Hemmend added.

Prefect and member of the Peace Club in Haythorne, Phinokwakhe Maphanga, said that the pupils in the school have responded positively to the initiative.

“There has been a decrease completely in smoking among our pupils. Pupils now have a voice and, as a member of the Peace Club, I am happy to see the peace this has brought to our school,” said Maphanga.

Teacher Sylvia Jansen, who has been teaching for 20 years, said that she was on the verge of retiring but since seeing the change in the mood of the school from the beginning of the year she is happy to continue teaching.

Blood giving is life giving BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com THE Sathya Sai International Organisation Midlands Region will , on behalf of the SANBS Blood Donor Clinic, host the second blood clinic of the year, having already begun proceedings in January.

Going on for almost 20 years, the Sai organisation was able to collect blood from 66 donors in January and hopes to collect more this time around.

“South Africa is the second-highest collector of blood after India who are first.

“This year we have volunteered to do six clinics throughout the year,” said co-ordinator for the blood donor clinics on behalf of the Sai organisation, Nithya Naidoo.

The blood donor clinic will be held at the TPA Primary School on the corner of Mysore and Aintree Road on March 10 from 10 am to 4 pm.

“We will also be running awareness drives for the blood drive this Saturday, March 2, at Debi Place, Truro Hall, Chota Motala Road and Northway Mall.

“It is essential for people to understand that giving blood is to give life and therefore we encourage everyone to participate,” said Naidoo.

Finding solidarity with the rare rhino, the all-female Team Rhino­ SA robotics club needs your help to realise their dream.

AGER to fly their flag high on the international stage, nine pupils from Pieter­maritzburg Girls High School are hoping to achieve a once-in-a-lifetime goal this April by raising enough money to participate in the Denson UK Engineering and Motion challenge in Coventry.

To participate in the competition, the girls who form part of the robotics team called Team Rhino South Africa have designed, developed, and built a remote control 4X4 vehicle from scratch using simple materials and implemented a radio control and motor management system using the Arduino platform.

IT manager and head of the robotics club Josef Moffet said that the work the girls have done to create this vehicle has been nothing short of remarkable.

“They haven’t taken anything off the shelves and have created their own parts for this project.

“They have been inspired by various local businesses that have taken the time to help them,” said Moffet, who added that now the girls were considerably short in their financial goal for the trip to Coventry.

Moffet said that although companies have supported them, they still find themselves short almost half the amount of money that they need for everyone to go on the trip.

The girls, who are embarking on a nogirl left behind policy, decided to name

themselves after the rhino because of the rhino’s rarity — they consider women in engineering another rarity and want to use this competition to promote the power of women.

“We are an emblem and want to represent South Africa through our diversity.

“We have all contributed greatly to this project and are committed to ensuring that we all are able to go on this trip and present our work,” said team leader Tanita Lakram, who emphasised that they refused to leave anyone behind and are thus looking for any sponsors who can help them reach their goal.

Lakram said that not everyone was able to take on the financial strain that comes with

the trip to Coventry and therefore they would be open to any donation towards their cause.

Many of the girls are hoping to use this competition, which comprises of much more than just engineering, to give them a boost in terms of their future careers.

The competition takes place in Coventry this year and will be held from April 13 to April 16.

Through this competition, the girls are also hoping to draw attention to Rhino poaching in an effort to hinder the illegal trade of rhino horn.

Siblings want answers SHARIKA REGCHAND

T

HE family of city man Farhad Manjoo are seeking answers as to why charges were withdrawn against his alleged killer.

Manjoo’s siblings, Dr Qurashia (Corrie), Shameme and Shiraz Manjoo, are in the process of writing to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to “appeal” the decision by the state to drop charges against Bongani Mncwabe.

Manjoo (58) was killed in June last year in what was initially believed to be a road rage incident.

At the time it was alleged that after he got off work at the Kismet Hotel where he was a club manager, he and some friends went to look at a decor job when they got involved in an altercation with unknown men at the corner of Pie-termaritz and Peter Kerchhoff streets.

Shots were fired and Manjoo was hit in the

chest. His friend, Rajesh Aumesdew, was also injured in the shooting.

Mncwabe was charged with Manjoo’s murder and for attempting to murder Aumesdew.

The court was told that the charges were being withdrawn because witness statements contradicted each other.

Evidence apparently supported Mncwabe’s version that he was acting in self-defence. In addition, video footage, which The Witness has not seen, reportedly shows that Mncwabe fired shots while he was being assaulted by Manjoo and Aumesdew.

Shameme asked yesterday: “Did my brother get the investigation and dignity he deserved?

Were there proper/due processes that was followed that informed the decision to withdraw the charges?”

The siblings only became aware that charges

had been dropped last Thursday.

None of them had been contacted by the investigating officer or the prosecutor. Corrie said: “We were dismayed, how could this happen?”

Shiraz said that from initial conversations with a prosecutor at the court, he was under the impression that there was a video tape of the incident but that it was unclear. The siblings said their niece, Thashni, was still struggling to come to terms with her father’s death.

They added that they were all “anti-violence, anti-hate and anti-revenge”.

Said Shiraz: “Farhad was loved and on the verge of having his book So You Want To Fish published.”

Shameme said the family was not ‘baying for blood’, but did want an explanation from the DPP. The siblings recalled their shock when they heard of their brother’s death last year.

Corrie had returned to America where she lives and their mother Shanthee, who was 93years-old then, was in hospital.

They said that because things were so hectic, and funeral preparations were being made, they did not attend Mncwabe’s first court appearance.

They added that they heard so many different versions about what had happened that night and wanted clarity.

Tensions run high as flat tenants accuse neighbours of racism BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com A SIGNAL Hill Flats resident who wished to remain anonymous says she was forced to move her family to another, more expensive flat after she was allegedly exposed to increased racial tension and hostility over the past six months.

“We have stayed here in Signal Hill Flats for 11 years and now have had to uproot ourselves and our belongings, all because our flat management cannot solve the problem,”said the woman.

According to the affected resident, the problems started in September when she reprimanded a few children from her flat block for making loud noises, after which the children’s parents approached the woman and accused her of bullying the children. Since then, the parents of the

children have apparently treated the woman and her family with vulgarity and hostility.

“We have been receiving assault threats as well as racial slurs for the last six months.

“We have been told that we must return to Northdale and India and that we do not belong here,” said the woman, who added that she has related various complaints to flat management about these instances, which included an incident which saw an adult threaten her son with violence, but the only solution offered by management was for the family to be allocated a new flat away from their current one. However this comes at a cost of an extra R600 in rent.

“They have not solved the problem and have actually increased my rental. We are not the ones who have done anything wrong, but we are being forced to pay for this,” argued the woman.

When contacted for comment, general manager of Capital City Housing, Rosanne Rampali, said that they were aware of a misunderstanding between the woman and the tenants that she shares a block with.

“I have investigated claims made by the tenant. We do acknowledge an issue of misunderstanding between her and the other tenants in the block,” “We have gone to lengths to try to assist this tenant and even arranged a meeting with the Ward Councillor and the chairman of the tenants forum on February 7 of this year in an effort to find a way forward.

“The meeting resulted in the ward councillor e-mailing the office, saying that it is administrative and he believes that a case of harassment be opened at the police station if the tenant still feels

the need,” said Rampali in a detailed e-mail.

Rampali added that while the tenant has laid numerous complaints regarding the noise, there have also been complaints laid against her by other tenants in the block of flats.

“The other tenants in the block have laid complaints about her behaviour and mannerisms as well,” said Rampali, remarking that this has left management in the cross-fire.

The woman requested a move from her current flat, which Rampali adds was facilitated with management offering her a discount rental for the first month. Management also hired casual staff to assist her in moving her furniture.

“We are a social housing organisation and encourage acceptance off all cultures and lifestyles.

We are family orientated and want the tenants to live peacefully,” said Rampali.

Attorney withdraws in Rampersad case after suspect pleads not guilty SHARIKA REGCHAND THE trial of a man who allegedly doused his girlfriend with petrol and then set her on fire last year was delayed again yesterday after his lawyer withdrew.

Nathen Rampersad appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg regional court before magistrate Bemal Jaynarayan.

He was expected to plead guilty or alternatively the matter was set down for trial. However, state prosecutor Oscar Sokhela told the court that Rampersad no longer wished to plead guilty. Initially, he said he was pleading not guilty, then he said he is pleading guilty and

now he says he is pleading not guilty.

Sokhela said his attorney Bongo­lethu Bomela will be withdrawing from the case, but he will let her explain.

She said that she has gotten conflicting statements from Rampersad and can no longer be his attorney.

Sokhela said he has no choice but to adjourn the matter for Rampersad to get a new attorney.

He is charged with arson and the attempted murder of his 17-year-old girlfriend on April 23 last year at their home in Lahore Road. He is alleged to have turned violent during an altercation. Rampersad remains in custody after bail was denied.

OCAL etymologist Dr John Midgley has discovered a new species of tarantula which he named Ceratogyrus Attonitifer which means “Bearer of astonishment.”

The species was first discovered in 2016 while the assistant director for natural science at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum was doing invertebrate biodiversity surveys for the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project in Eastern Angola.

“The spider has a distinctly unique horn that is completely different to the other spiders in the Ceratogyrus group.

“I discovered these spiders by observing the burrows during the day and then at night came back to dig out the spiders.

“I immediately knew I discovered a new species and found more specimen and finally confirmed this as such,” said Midgley.

Midgley said that he was astonished by the spectacular horn on the back of the spider which he said is four times the size of any horn found on the Ceratogyrus spiders.

Speaking on why the discovery has only gone public now, Midgley said that he knew the species was a new discovery on the first day but because of delays in the research process it had taken two years for him and his co-author, Dr Ian Engelbrecht, to finally publish their findings in the African Invertebrate journal.

While Midgley confirmed that he and Dr Engelbrecht are studying the structure of the spider’s horn, there still is currently no active field research on the new-found species.

“We are trying to find out the exact purpose of the horn and in the interim national parks are being established in the region to conserve the spider.

“The spiders’ venom has also not been tested but Angolan locals have attested to the

venom not being poisonous,” said Midgley.

Midgley said that while the spider was a new find for science, the locals, however, are familiar with the spider.

“The people there are accustomed to the spider. We have kept the location a secret, however, to discourage illegal smugglers and hope that anyone who does see it keeps it a secret as well,” said Midgley.

Proud to have contributed to biodiversity knowledge through his discovery, Midgley hopes that his find will get more people involved in arachnology.

Information and pictures on the spider will soon be included in the new galleries at the museum in the future.

A

FTER taking refuge in a tent for 15 years, Iris Holby and her family can finally rest easy knowing that they have a proper roof over their heads after local businessman Garth Middleton, from Middleton’s Water Solutions and Services, banded together with other business people in the area to lend a helping hand.

“After reading the article [in the Maritzburg Fever] I went to the coun-

cillor’s office and together we went to the house where he introduced me to Iris. I then got together with a few of the businessmen in the area and we were able to build the Holby family a proper foundation and house which we plan to extend,” said Middleton.

Previously, the Holby family had to collect water from a pipe in their yard which was left to lie on top of a bin to save water. Middleton has since installed a proper tap on the side of the newly erected house for the family to get clean water.

“It took us two days to do this. We

wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for the family,” said Middleton.

Holby said that, since last Monday, they have been enjoying the comfort of their new home. “I am very happy and thankful for this new house that we have. It feels so nice to stay in a house where there is no tent above us,” said an appreciative Holby.

Having done various community initiatives prior to this, Middleton urged other businesses to get involved in helping the community in whatever way they could.

THE Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB­) paid a visit to Pieter­maritzburg last Wednesday as part of their nation-wide roadshow to attract previously disadvantaged individuals into the property sector.

Speaking at the roadshow at the Golden Horse Casino was executive manager of the EAAB Dineo Mphahlele­, who highlighted that the sector still lacked in the country’s demographics and, through these roadshows, they are hoping to recruit more individuals and open the sector to all South Africans.

“The transformation initiatives are numerous. Our goal is to effect change in the opportunities available and open the door to previously disadvantaged individuals.

“We want to increase the number of people of colour in the real estate agent field,” said Mphahlele.

According to section 27, agents who previously may not have been able to obtain their Fidelity Fund Certificates (FFC) will now be issued certificates in the interest of justice if they qualify and comply with certain conditions.

Previously disadvantaged individuals (PDI’s) will now qualify to be exempt from submissions of audit reports, exempt from full/partial payment of registration fees, exempt from education requirements etc.

However, Mphahlele said that these individuals wishing to be exempt needed to meet a certain criteria.

For example, they must submit a 12month bank statement with the time periods in order to qualify for the exemption.

IETERMARITZBURG-BORN musician, singer-songwriter Matt Gardiner has composed a brand new original track, titledFar Away, with talented friend and producer Bryn Scott.

The pair have far exceeded their own expectations for this foot-tapping, head-nodding anthem that is set to release on March 1, suited perfectly for the airwaves to end off the Summer season.

Taking control of waste woes BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com FOLLOWING the recent strike by waste removal workers that plagued the city, the Epworth Community Watch took it upon themselves to get the waste removed off the streets and sent to the dump.

Community watch group chairman Malcolm Moodley­commended the efforts of the Epworth Community Watch, stating that the initiative was essential in ensuring the safety of community members.

“It has been noted that a handful of criminals hide among the vagrants when domestic waste is put out.

These criminals use this opportunity to scout houses and take opportunistic chances to commit crimes,” said Moodley.

The strike, which has since been declared over by waste removal workers, impacted areas across Pietermaritzburg in a negative way with dirt being left out for days, attracting all types of pests and vagrants.

Moodley said that Tug Trailers sponsored the Epworth Community Watch with a trailer in order to transport the collected waste to the dump.

“This kindness from Tug Trailers ensured that the number of vagrants dramatically dropped in a safe manner, which in turn allowed us to maintain our safe environment,” said Moodley.

Busy March at the Tatham Gallery T

HE Tatham Shop, which is based on the ground floor of the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, is known for its wide variety of hand-made craft items.

Made primarily by crafters and artists in KwaZulu-Natal, the shelves are stocked with traditional and contemporary ceramics, jewellery, carved, beaded and embroidered objects and lots more.

The shop is currently highlighting the work of Zolani Mpente, a wonderfully-talented wood sculptor who creates domestic and farm animals and people using different indigenous woods from the forest near his village, Dedeni.

Great detail is carved into his work, with the surface finished to a silky smoothness.

Mpente also incorporates different fine-grained indigenous dark woods to contrast the predominantly light wood used.

The Tatham Shop is offering a 15% discount on Mpente’s work from Thursday, February 28 to Saturday, March 2.

The shop is open from Tuesday to Friday berween 9 am and 4 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Inquiries: Mary or Zama at 033 392 2828.

The gallery is also holding a litter bin design and painting workshop with Jono Hornby from March 18 to 20

and March 25 to 27, between 9 am and 3 pm, in the Lorna Ferguson Room.

Participating artists will design and paint images on large prepared litter bins for the city centre.

Members of the public are welcome to observe the painting workshops while the gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Individuals who sponsor bins, and businesses who contribute to the cost will be acknowledged. For contributions e-mail Vimla at vimla.moodley@msunduzi.gov.za Artists will get exposure, and a small honorarium if they so wish. All materials will be provided.

With the assistance of the municipality the bins will be placed in the Tatham grounds in a campaign to draw attention to the litter problem in the city centre.

Challenge powers through with a brand new event format R

by Squirrels Nut Butter, took first place for the men and women respectively at the 2019 Wildseries Three Cranes Challenge, which took place from February 21 to February 24.

With no title sponsor this year, the Wildseries team used the opportunity to run the event under an innovative and exciting new format, powered by KZN Trail Running (KZNTR) with a focus on raising funds for Wildlands, a programme of the Wildtrust and conservation partner, the Karkloof Conservancy.

The Three Cranes Challenge, part of the Wildseries, is a three-day trail run in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands spanning a distance of roughly 100km. It raises funds for conservation efforts in the Karkloof Nature Reserve and the endangered Cranes species, namely the Blue, Crowned and Wattled Crane.

The challenge was won by van der Merwe­with an overall time of 07:36:10. Second place went to Steven Erasmus, who finished almost an hour behind the winner in a time of 08:25:30. Third place was claimed by previous winner, Nic de Beer, timing in at 08:46:28.

Tarryn Lopez won the women’s race with a cumulative time of 09:26:30. Trude Carstens­came second in a time of 09:43:19.

Marianne Semmelink completed the podium for third with her time of 09:45:57.

The participants of the Wildseries Three Cranes Challenge crossed some overflowing streams due to the heavy rains experienced this past weekend in the Karkloof Valley. marathon and full marathon across technically challenging terrain. Participants ran on and off-road tracks through forests, grasslands and managed plantations.

It was a mixture of conditions that challenged runners throughout the race.

The weekend started off with cloudy weather. This came after very heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal.

Day one included the Karkloof Canopy Tour, which was a highlight for many.

Day two, the longest day of the challenge, started off with very windy conditions, with the highpoint being Mbona Nature Reserve and Benvie Botanical Garden where participants enjoyed a time out in this spectacular and unique setting.

For the first time in many years, the final day delivered clear skies and gorgeous

views of the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall though the previous day’s heavy rains left mud through the forested and steep sections and fast-flowing streams through the grasslands.

“Despite some big afternoon and evening storms, the weather each day for the runners was ideal and participants really got to see the Karkloof in all it’s glory” said Andrew Booth of KZNTR. “There were big changes to the format of the event and it is exciting to see the trail running community embracing these to make the event more accessible and sustainable.”

Louise Duys, Wildlands’ Executive Director of Partnerships, Marketing and Training, is thrilled about the success of this year’s Three Cranes Challenge. “With the 10th installment of the Wildseries Three

Cranes Challenge now behind us, we’d like to acknowledge the team and volunteers who worked tirelessly to pull together another extraordinary event as well as our garment sponsor, Jonsson Workwear.

“We’d also like to thank the participants, who came out in full force in support of the conservation of the beautiful Karkloof, for embracing our new event format. They displayed unbelievable character and camaraderie throughout it all.”

By participating in the Three Cranes Challenge, runners help to conserve KZN’s endangered Cranes — a flagship species for SA, through the incredible work of the Karkloof Conservancy. The three Cranes themselves are the Blue, Grey-Crowned and Wattled Cranes. The threat they face is incentive to protect the wetlands and grasslands they call home.

This year, the Karkloof Conservancy turns 20 years old. It is comprised of local landowners who wish to protect biodiversity within the Karkloof area. This has precipitated several community projects to protect the Karkloof, of which the conservancy protects 40 000 hectares. Projects include the Karkloof Conservancy Farm Schools Project and the Adopt a Crane Project.

Proposed IAAF rules an insult FRANK MEINTJIES AS the world gathered in Monaco last week to celebrate the crème de la crème of global sport at the Laureus World Sports Awards, another global star started the next phase of the gruelling battle for her identity, dignity and possibly her life.

Lawyers for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) have argued that the 28-year-old world and Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, is a “biological male” as well as a classified female. Spectators have also joined in, posting the vilest insults and verbal abuse.

Their tone is no longer that of people who genuinely want to understand the genetic and social issues on the table. The names they call her leave you in no doubt that their prism is populated with racism, homophobia and misogyny.

Semenya has been fighting a decade-long battle that is no longer just about naturally occurring hormones. It is about her freedom to live and excel in the body in which she was born. It is about her identity as a woman being questioned. It is about who gets to tell women, that they are not women?

Imagine being an athlete competing on the in-

ternational platform, setting the tarmac on fire every time you compete. Crowds roar and cheer you on from inside the stadium and others from the comfort of their homes. The applause is deafening. But for every cheer your victory solicits, there is a loud groan from those who have appointed themselves arbiters of who is and isn’t a woman.

Semenya’s superlative talent is unquestionable. Perhaps that is the problem. She is not allowed to be THAT talented. She cannot let her body do what it was born to do and is facing the possibility of giving it up to the male-dominated IAAF. Where do men get the nerve to …? Never mind, I know the answer.

The IAAF wants to introduce new rules, that will apply to women who take part in track events from 400 metres. They are to keep their testosterone levels below a prescribed amount prior to competing. Prescribed by whom? Furthermore, the international athletics body has arrogantly conferred unto itself the authority to determine what constitutes “normal female”. It is outrageous. It is insulting. It is crass.

Semenya’s lawyers are arguing that her genetic variations are what sport is about and that hers should not be treated differently than other genetic variations that are celebrated in sport. It is absurd, that the athletics body wants us to believe that a naturally occurring variation confers unfair advantage and requires artificial intervention. There is a name for that. It is doping. And we all know how that goes down!

All Semenya wants is to run naturally, the way she was born. In a recent interview, shortly after she had decided to challenge the proposed rules, she told me: “The IAAF has pissed me off and I want to make this right.”

Well, my sense is that Semenya is not the only one who is pissed off. For many years South Africans have rallied behind her, with a few exceptions. Even when politicians in the ANC and the disgraced former athletics chief Leonard Chuene, tried to divide the nation, eroding all the goodwill that South Africans were directing at Semenya, ingratiating themselves to her by positioning themselves as her only protectors, citizens of this country continued to celebrate and fight for her in many different ways. The powerful people

made political speeches about Semenya, claiming nobody, besides them, was on her side. That was ten years ago. Time has proven that they were wrong.

South Africans in all their diversity have been and still are behind Semenya. The outpouring of outrage and empathy when it was revealed that she had undergone quite intrusive tests to determine if she was a girl or not, initiated decisive action against Chuene (there were other governance transgressions that led to his dismissal).

This matter has hung like an albatross around Semenya’s neck. In some quarters, she is spoken of as though she is a cheat, when all she is doing is using her talent to inspire so many — and leave many others behind!

It all boils down to whether a woman, with naturally high levels of testosterone has the right to be a woman.

Culture of no consequences MONDLI MAKHANYA WARNING: This is a bit of an extreme column about extremism. It’s quite a stretch, but please bear with this lowly newspaperman.

We begin with the story of Shamima Begum. She is a British teenager who left home at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State, the extremist terror group that has been trying to create an Islamist caliphate in Syria and Iraq, which it would use as a launchpad to build a caliphate that traverses the whole planet. Just like many other youngsters who had been radicalised, Begum left the UK and ended up in Syria via Turkey. She married a Dutchman who had also joined the Islamic State. They had two children who both died in the terrible conditions brought about by the war.

Her husband was captured during her third pregnancy as Islamic State forces fell to pro-government Syrian militia and the dream of a caliphate collapsed. The now 19-year-old Begum gave birth to her child in a makeshift refugee camp for former Islamic State members. Many of those in the camp are unwanted by their home countries, who fear taking back individuals who may be trained extremists and therefore dangerous. Begum is one of them. British Home Secretary Sajid Javid has stated that she is not welcome in the UK and his government has even tried to palm her off on Bangladesh, her parent’s home country. As it is, she is stateless — something that is in violation of a UN convention that nobody should be in that situation.

Begum, her family and human rights organisations have appealed to Britain to allow her back on compassionate grounds. They say that she was young and naïve when she left and that, for the sake of her newborn, she should not be left in inhumane conditions.

But the young woman has not made things easy for herself and her supporters. In interviews with journalists who have gone into the camp, she has expressed no regrets, indicating that her radicalisation might be deepseated. She has appealed for mercy while not quite renouncing her actions and the goals that the Islamic State set out to achieve.

“I feel a lot of people should have sympathy for me, for everything I’ve been through. You know, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I left. I was hoping that maybe, for the sake of me and my child, they [would] let me come back because I can’t live in this camp forever. It’s not really possible,” she said this week.

She claims she was just a housewife who spent the entire time in the Islamic State camps tending to her husband and family. She described life in Raqqa as normal, except for “every now and then bombing and stuff”.

And then came the comment that shows how desensitised she is to violence: “When I saw my first severed head in a bin, it didn’t faze me at all. It was from a captured fighter seized on the battlefield, an enemy of Islam.”

Begum’s sympathisers want to portray her as a harmless victim of indoctrination who, like her peers, was susceptible to silly stuff. Teenagers do very stupid things, but this one left home wanting to join an army that kills wantonly and chops off people’s heads.

But teenagers, like adults, should also know that there are consequences to their actions. Begum and those who want her to be absolved do not seem to believe that she should suffer the consequences of her actions.

Which brings us to South Africa, a country that is nurturing a culture of no consequences for wrongdoing.

We all know about the grand corruption that went unpunished in the wasted decade we have emerged from. We are all also familiar with the criminality that allows the bad guys to get away with murder, rape, housebreaking and pillaging.

There is another culture leading to no consequences that has crept in over the past few years. Since the start of the #FeesMustFall campaign, we have valorised thuggery and portrayed hooligans as revolutionaries. At the height of the campaign, agitators were destroying property left, right and centre, and were terrorising academics and fellow students. At some point, there was even a plot to burn down the library that houses records from South Africa’s treason trials — invaluable records from our noble liberation struggle.

When the universities tried to protect property in tandem with law enforcement agencies and private security companies, they were accused of militarising campuses and infringing on the rights of the violent students.

Since then, there has been a campaign to treat those charged with public violence as victims of a heavy-handed state, and to treat those who have been convicted as political prisoners.

That culture of no consequences for anti-learning hooligans has remained with us. This academic year has already been plagued by violent protests throughout the country as students enforce legitimate demands with violent behaviour.

As a country, we continue to tolerate the thuggery that is turning our institutions of higher learning into permanent battlefields. We tolerate and normalise extremism. We will be held hostage by ruffians.

There have to be visible consequences for the criminality that has seized our campuses. –

Pothole fixers in overdrive CHELSEA PIETERSE

T’S a mammoth task.

Since February 11 the contractor appointed to solve the city’s pothole problem has filled 1 520 potholes in Msunduzi but thousands more await.

The Witness, the Maritzburg Echo’s sister publication, was inundated by more than 90 comments last week from local residents complaining about the state of the roads in Msunduzi, Howick and Hilton — the majority pulling no punches about the potholes that abound, with one resident likening them to “sinkholes” rather than potholes.

But Gerard Lowe, site manager, and Hayden Blessie, project manager of Pro-Phalt, the company recently appointed by the City to tackle the problem, remain upbeat about their daunting task and believe they are equal to the challenge.

They told The Witness that they have fixed 1 520 potholes in Msunduzi since February 11, and depending on factors like traffic and weather, are currently busy repairing 35 to 120 potholes daily.

“We are busy training more workers so we will be at full capacity soon,” added Lowe.

The team said they are told daily by Msunduzi where to work and their aim is to focus first on the “headache potholes” — those the municipality has received the most complaints about.

“We have already started in Scottsville.

Leinster Road is 95% completed except for a few small potholes,” said Lowe.

“We are also busy in Prestbury, and Athlone. The CBD is a bit difficult because of traffic but we are looking at working on weekends when there will be less traffic or working a night shift here and there so we

do not cause too many disruptions.”

Blessie said that once they were fully up and running the number of potholes fixed per day would increase to between 120 to 150.

“It takes us about 15 minutes to fix a pothole, but we use specialised equipment and methods.

“When we fix potholes, there is a oneyear guarantee on the work. If that pothole opens up before the one year is up, we will come and fix the pothole at our own expense,” he said.

Lowe said they were “over the moon” to accept this challenge as he and Blessie are both from Pietermaritzburg.

“We are really happy to be back in our home town. Our friends see us and hoot and wave at us when they see us,” said Blessie.

Lowe said people have been very supportive wherever they work and said members of the community have even come out to offer the workers cooldrinks and cigarettes.

Although it could not be confirmed exactly how many potholes still need fixing across the city, Blessie and Lowe said they are confident they “will get it all done”.

Pietermaritzburg locals took to The Witness Facebook page to post their complaints about the state of the roads within the city and uMngeni.

Facebook user Careen Seaward posted: “Merrivale has been struggling with potholes for a few years and they are only getting worse. It seems that we are expected to pay taxes and rates but our roads are becoming a danger and unroadworthy. We pay for everything but potholes are getting bigger in our area.”

Alethea Rae Rampersad posted that they have had to fix their vehicle rims three times in three weeks and get three new tyres as well.

Michelle Driemeyer Dally posted: “Craters and more craters on Golf Road. So bad now that you either risk damaging your car

or waiting to bypass them via the oncoming lane. Shocking considering there are three schools and the university traffic that this road serves.”

Kimberley Govender posted: “Absolutely terrible in Northdale. Tyres get damaged.

Your entire body shakes when travelling on these roads due to potholes and uneven roads.” uMngeni municipal spokesperson Thando Mgaga said the municipality has an audit of potholes within its jurisdiction —

from the worst affected roads to the least affected.

“On a regular basis the municipality utilises its internal potholes repair team, which has a target of repairing 500 square metres per month or 2 500 square metres per quarter. “Moreover, when the budget permits the municipality employs reputable service providers to assist with pothole repairs.”

What the 2019 budget means to your back pocket F

INANCE Minister Tito Mboweni­ delivered his 2019 budget speech last week against the backdrop of a tough economy and an even tougher energy crisis. The biggest cost will again be felt by motorists who will be hit by a triple whammy: the fuel price levy, the Road Accident Fund levy, and a Carbon Tax. According to Susan Steward from Budget Insurance, “On the whole, daily living will become more expensive this year, and consumers are going to feel the pinch when filling up their cars, buying tobacco and

alcohol and indulging in sugary drinks.”

Here’s why: • Petrol and diesel: The fuel levy for petrol and diesel went up by 29c and 30c respectively.

• The Road Accident Fund levy went up by five cents per litre of fuel, despite the Minister saying the levy won’t cover the R215 billion liability. This comes into effect in April.

• A carbon fuel levy of nine cents a litre on petrol and 10c on diesel will come into effect in June.

• In addition, there is expected to be a petrol price increase in March (pet-

rol is expected to rise by another 43c per litre, diesel by another 62c). That means, by the middle of the year, motorists will be paying around R14.94 per litre of petrol and R14.22 per litre of diesel. A car with a 50l fuel tank will cost around R747 (petrol) and R711 (diesel).

• Tobacco and alcohol: Smokers will be forking out more to support their habit.

A pack of 20 cigarettes will increase by R1.14 and excise duty on a typical cigar will go up by about 64c.

• Wine lovers will pay 22c more for a 750ml litre bottle and sparkling wine will cost an extra 84c while 340ml cans of beer will increase by 12c. There will be no tax on sorghum beer. The biggest increase was whiskey – up by R4.54 for a bottle.

By increasing sin taxes, consumers might opt for cheaper substitutes, including illicit cigarettes or alcohol. If your monthly household budget cannot cover the increase of these items, it is best to either cut down or quit, rather than compromise your health with inferior products. This might end up costing you more in medical bills over the long term.

• Sugar tax: Introduced last year, the sugar tax will increase from 2.1c per gram above four grams, to 2.21c per gram.

Where will my tax money go?

In the 2019 budget, 47.9% of nationally-raised funds are allocated to national government, 43% to provinces and 9.1% to local government over the medium term, after providing for debtservice costs and the contingency reserve.

Was there good news?

• Education: Over R30 billion is allocated to build new schools and maintain schooling infrastructure.

• Health: To increase the staff complement of doctors and nurses in the public health sector, R2.8 billion has been allocated to a new human resources grant and R1bn for medical interns.

• Entrepreneurship: R481.6m was allocated to the Small Enterprise Development Agency to expand the small

business incubation programme.

• Housing: A R950m subsidy has been allocated over three years to assist first-time home buyers when purchasing a home.

• Fighting poverty: Government has allocated R567bn for social grant payments to assist the elderly and with child support.

With these increases in mind, Budget Insurance recommends five things to consider when reviewing your monthly budget 1. To draw up a budget, start with a list of fixed expenditures and other monthly deductions. Have a careful look at what you are spending your money on and identify where you might be “leaking” cash on non-essentials like takeaways, entertainment and satellite TV, as well as on essentials such as your cellphone, groceries and transport.

Once you have pinpointed areas where you could be spending less, start cutting back.

2. Get creative when looking for ways to cut back on costs. For instance, you could establish lift-clubs to save money on petrol and encourage your family to

switch off lights in unoccupied rooms to save on electricity costs.

3. If repayments on your vehicle, maintenance and fuel are eating up a third of your income every month, then it is time to reconsider whether or not to downsize. Other big ticket items such as your monthly rental payments and consolidating your high-interest debt should also be tackled as part of your budget review.

4. Being underinsured is one thing which can drastically increase your expenses despite your best budgeting intentions. This is especially true for items which we tend not to insure but are in fact high risk such as cellphones, laptops and home contents. At the same time, being over insured is also costly so go through your various policies and be clear on the type of cover you pay for each month.

5. Put away your credit cards. Don’t carry them around in your purse or wallet as you might be tempted to spend. Rather carry a debit card for everyday purchases and save-up for the more expensive things you want.

“Experience has proved that the best solution [to beat traffic congestion] is public transport and other measures such as travelling in groups. The bus rapid transport system will be rolled out in phases,” she said.

Ngcobo said various demands placed on the traffic department such as accidents, escorts and protests, deplete the number of officers who can be deployed at intersections. “These constraints change on a daily basis,” she said.

“It should also be noted that traffic officers also fall ill, get injured on duty and go on leave. The municipality tries by all means to ensure that traffic officers are available to assist with the flow,” Ngcobo added.

Another motorist said it takes her more than an hour to get from her home in Allandale to work in Scottsville.

“At least one traffic light is out once a week. They have all not worked properly for some months now.”

She said it would be unrealistic for the City to try to post traffic officers at

each intersection.

Instead, she said, driver behaviour needs to change, and that could happen if the traffic authorities used a small number of roving units to police “all types of traffic intersection infringements” and issued fines immediately.

The Witness reported last year that a glitch was to blame for the malfunctioning of the traffic lights along Chota Motala Road, but Msunduzi did not respond yesterday to a query on the latest batch of concerns.

Other motorists described their frustrations driving on Chota Motala Road, saying that Msunduzi should deploy traffic officers to help deal with the heavy traffic.

Verona Moodley said: “Whichever road you take you still get stuck. Every day I sit for an hour in traffic just to get to work — we are late for work almost every day.”

“Where are the traffic officers?” asked Narena Reddy. “Queues are on Samana Road, Plymouth Road and Allandale Drive. People are not adhering

to the rules of the road.”

Variksha Sivenandan said: “We are already forking out so much for petrol and now we are not reaching work on time. Something needs to be done; can traffic cops be on the roads to stop all unruly driving?”

Krishenchund Ramsaran said: “I leave at least 10 minutes earlier than usual to travel from Northdale to Willowton Road. Traffic is worse than last year November.”

Frustrated motorist Gerald Govender, who wrote a letter this week to the provincial transport department imploring officials to take action, said: “The taxi drivers are always driving recklessly, especially in Manchester Road, and disregarding other road users.”

Govender said it takes motorists more than an hour just to travel five kilometres. “It’s becoming very stressful for road users and we need to do something to make our roads safer,” he said.

Another frustrated motorist, Verona Moodley, said whichever road you take coming out of Northdale, you still get stuck.

“Every day I sit for an hour in traffic just to get to work; mornings and afternoons are the same. Besides our cars getting damaged, and petrol getting finished, we are late for work almost every second day.”

Rishaal Sahadew said the roads network in Pietermaritzburg ran out of capacity a long time ago.

“It is in dire need of road network improvements to bolster the capacity of the network. Something needs to be done asap — no more excuses,” said Sahadew.

Motorists are fed-up with the notorious peak-hour traffic bottlenecks and they want the municipality to outline a plan of action to alleviate the congestion.

Northdale is the most congested area in the city as many commuters who live there use their private vehicles to get into the city centre and outskirts.

“I leave home at about 6.40 am and only get to work at about 7.50 am, even though I start work at 7.30 am,”said Elisha Dasarath.

Dasarath lives in Northdale and works in Mkondeni. “The timing of the traffic light changes seems to have altered, and cars tend to drive in the oncoming lanes to get to the front of the roads that lead into Chota Motala.So the lawlessness of the drivers also holds things up.

“It is such a schlep getting to work and the situation is the same in the evening when people are returning home from work.”

Between 6 am and 6 pm, hundreds of cars moving at a snail’s pace queue in Chota Motala (Old Greytown) Road.

The extreme backlog also affects nearby roads that lead into Chota Motala Road, such as Mysore Road and Allandale Drive.

In 2017, Pietermaritzburg was ranked among the cities with the worst traffic congestion in South Africa.

According to a study by transportation analytics firm Inrix, Pietermaritzburg was ranked fifth out of nine cities in South Africa with the worst traffic congestion, with an average person spending 19,8 hours a year stuck in traffic.

The Inrix 2016 Traffic Scorecard analysed traffic congestion in 1 064 cities in 38 countries. Pietermaritzburg ranked 384 out of the 1 064 cities worldwide.

Cape Town was ranked first in SA, with an average person spending 49,1 hours a year stuck in traffic, with Johannesburg ranked second, Durban third and Pretoria forth.

Frustrated motorists said that coming from Northdale, the roads have frequent traffic-light outages and are plagued by unruly motorists and taxi drivers who sometimes drive into oncoming traffic.

Motorists believe a lack of policing allows the public to ignore traffic laws with impunity.

But Msunduzi Municipality said traffic officers are deployed in Northdale to assist with the flow of traffic.

Ntobeko Ngcobo, acting municipal spokesperson, said the transportation planning department, which has a system that monitors traffic signals, is now monitoring the Northdale area to determine if there is a need to change the traffic lights’ timing.

Ngcobo said the municipality assigns officers to busy intersections to help traffic flow during peak hours.

She said car ownership is growing every month, therefore building more roads will not be a complete solution as those roads will also get congested.

Fashion’s Future More ‘wellness’ across the whole cycle Design

Wellness clothing is hitting the fashion industry and experts believe that through what we wear, the health and wellness envelope can be pushed even further.

This intersection between wellness and fashion is the leading trend of the newly-released 2019 Global Wellness Trends Report.

The report, released in New York last week, is the culmination of deliberations between 650 wellness experts from 50 nations at the Global Wellness Summit last year held in Cesena, Italy. They debated the future of wellness, eventually narrowing it down to eight trends that would lead in disrupting the industry.

And on top of that list is fashion.

“The moment we’re born, clothing gets slapped on us. And for most of us, that founding moment foretells a nearly lifelong, complex relationship — even obsession — with what we wear. It’s understandable: no other objects touch our bodies every single day and our clothes are a powerful non-verbal projection of ‘who we are’,” states the report.

Although the athleisure trend, which has seen clothing designed for workouts or other athletic activities worn in other settings, is a wellknown and thriving market valued at more than $83 billion globally (over R1,1 trillion) in 2016, experts believe that this year a huge wave of sustain-

able, ethical, healing and meaningful fashion will be on the rise.

The report says 80 billion garments are now produced worldwide each year, with three in five of them ending up in a landfill or burnt.

This “take-make-dispose” model creates a staggering 1,2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

Beth McGroarty, the summit’s director of research, says there will be a change this year.

“We’ll see radical innovation in sustainable textiles, with clothing or shoes made from recycled plastic bottles, algae, mushrooms and food waste. More vegan, cruelty-free fashion, with alt-fur, alt-leather, alt-everything collections that are trendier than the real thing.

“New AI [artificial intelligence] and 3-D design technologies mean the future is an on-demand, customcreated-for-you wardrobe versus the spray-and-pray, generic overproduction,” McGroarty says.

And the kicker is, many of these innovations are already out in the market. “[International app developer] Change of Paradigm is developing virtual and holographic reality apps that let people experience clothing before they buy. They use digital textiles to ensure fit, and, at the click of your mouse, you can change patterns, prints and features,” the report states.

“Companies such as Denmark’s Solve are rolling out downloadable fashion: If you have access to a laser cutter [found in more places now], you can download their handbag pat-

terns, laser-cut the recycled fabrics, and, for a few bucks and a 20-minute assembly time, you have a cool, sustainable new bag.”

The next generation of smart, connected and healing clothes that actively boost your wellbeing is also straight ahead.

“New technologies mean that fitness wearables will move seamlessly into clothing while self-regulating fabrics will adapt to all kinds of environmental and bodily changes — heat, cold, air flow, movement and UV rays.

“We’ll see antibacterial clothes that clean themselves, collagen-infused clothes that moisturise your body all day, clothes that broadcast your mood, pyjamas that help you sleep — even clothes weaving in ‘ancient wellness’, such as lines suffused with Ayurvedic [Indian medicine] medicinal plants,” McGroarty says.

And once again, most of these innovations are already in the market.

ADDSWORTH swimmers put in excellent performances at the Midlands Championship Gala, which was held at The Wykeham Collegiate on Thursday, January 31 (boys) and Saturday, February 2 (girls).

Nicholas Kruger, Grade 7 (U13), received Gold Medals for 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, and 100m Butterfly.

Patrick Lamb, Grade 6 (U12), received Gold Medals for 100m Butterfly,100m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke; Silver Medals for 50m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley; and a Bronze Medal for 100m Freestyle.

Restyled: 2019 Mahindra XUV 500 W10 GORDON HALL

L

IFE is about compromises. Critics complain that Mahindra’s new flagship, the XUV 500 W10, has only 96 litres of boot volume when all seven seats are in use. Unfortunately, if you want more space you have to spend more money. For example there’s a Ford Everest with similarly sized diesel engine, automatic gearbox and a 400-litre boot. Apart from costing more, its body is over a foot longer and it needs half a metre more turning space. As we said, life’s about compromises.

What you are not asked to compromise on includes: • Safety — six airbags, disc brakes all around with ABS and EBD, ESP with rollover mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control.

• Convenience — static bending headlamps, seven-inch colour touchscreen, video playback, tyre pressure monitoring, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, front fog lamps, roof rails, onboard computer and Intellipark. Beyond the usual reversing camera and audible warnings, the system displays the distance to imminent contact, starting at about 105 cm and counting down.

• Style — alloy wheels, illuminated doorsills, puddle lamps and leather upholstery on W8 and 10.

• Expected features — tilt and reach adjustable steering wheel with remotes, phone connection, voice commands, cruise control,

powered windows and mirrors, automatic air conditioning, recharging points, remote tailgate unlocking, rear wash and wipe with demister, follow-me lights, remote fuel flap release.

Mahindra did not provide details of the suspension improvements but they work well. Springing and damping is noticeably softer yet still mildly firm. The car remained stable along the same dodgy surfaces over which we tested a W8 a few years ago, but it was noticeably more comfortable. And quieter. Mahindra worked on sound-deadening too.

The W10 is the same as W8, except that it comes in automatic only and boasts extra features; a sunroof with anti-pinch, keyless entry with push-button starter and electrical adjusters for the driver’s seat.

WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO LIVE WITH: • We hadn’t driven an automatic XUV 500 before, so we were keen to “give it the gears.”

A conventional autobox, it occasionally hunted for the right ratio when stressed but it’s by no means as fussy as some. It isn’t a “sports” box either; so don’t expect the kind of brutal kick-down you might experience with a sports saloon. Manual override is controlled by a little black switch on the side of the gear lever.

• Seven adults can fit, although your six-foot teenager might object if you expect her to remain in the third row for too long. Taller

will happen when you need to get moving quickly.

• Vision outward is good, the car has all the vigour it needs for its intended purposes, it handles and parks easily and it’s comfortable.

• Interior trim is hard plastic with various surface patterns while fit and finish is a little sketchy.

Mahindras make no claim to be BMWs and prices reflect that. On the other hand, they appear to be solid and reliable, real life fuel economy is acceptable and this top-level version is loaded with good stuff.

At its price you could hardly go wrong.

that it leaves a big space between the accelerator and the side panel. Unless you’re careful, it’s possible to wedge your foot into the space and end up with no accelerator movement at all. Murphy’s Law dictates that this

Renault ups the ante with the new and improved Koleos GORDON HALL

Briefly, the new range consists of three models in two trim levels, Expression and Dynamique; two drive trains, 4x2 and awd; one engine and one transmission.

Expression offers 4x2 drive, auto-on halogen lights with cornering foglamps, 17inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, black fabric seats with manual controls, rear parking sensors, powered windows and mirrors, automatic dual zone air conditioning with ducting to the rear and a temperature controlled cup holder, extra grab handles, a seven-inch touch screen, Arkamys 3D sound with app mirroring via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (now downloadable from Google Play Store), voice commands and the usual Bluetooth and plugs. The boot has grown from 450 litres to 464.

Safety kit includes six airbags; ABS brakes with EBA, EBD, ESC; traction control; hill start assist; ISOFix mountings; cruise control with speed limiter and side impact beams.

Dynamique offers a choice of 4x2 or awd and ups the ante. Try LED headlamps, 18inch alloy wheels, leather seats with electric adjustment on both front chairs (a R12 000 option on Expression), additional parking sensors front and side, reversing camera, blind spot detection, keyless entry and start, tyre pressure monitoring, illuminated sun visor mirrors, an

HE New Koleos: it’s “planted”, solid, quiet, comfortable and much nicer than the old one. The previous generation never sold very well in South Africa, with the last few easing off showroom floors by mid-2016.

Carried over to the new model is the Alliance’s 2.5-litre QR25DE petrol engine, now with more torque at lower revs, the X-Tronic CVT gearbox presently boasting seven virtual gears rather than the original five and, for the all-wheel drive version, iDrive 4x4 off X-Trail. It is still built at the Renault-Samsung factory in Busan, South Korea.

And, like other brands from that country, build quality has improved remarkably over the past ten years.

We were tempted to compare its fit and finish with cars from the German Big Three but knew that some readers might blow gaskets because certain things cannot be said out loud. It is very good, though.

And the new car looks every inch the solid, muscular and handsome D-segment SUV that Renault was aiming for. It is the brand’s new range-topper, so forget budget-beating Dusters and Stepways for a moment; think European, think Clio.

GOOD quality car batteries have an impressive lifespan of up to five years, but most batteries fail within two to three years. The exact life expectancy of your battery depends on a host of variables, including your driving habits and the amount of love and attention you give it.

Keep your car out of the sweltering heat by parking it in a garage or shaded spot as often as possible. • Keep it steady Excessive vibration can cause short circuits and internal battery damage. Stir in the melted butter and press the mixture evenly onto the base of the lined dish.

Bake for 10 minutes and allow to cool.

For the caramel layer, combine the treacle sugar, cream, butter and vanilla essence in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Bring it up to a gentle simmer and cook for two minutes.

Allow it to cool for 15 minutes.

For the cheesecake layer, combine all of the ingredients and whisk until smooth.

Spoon the mixture over the baked crust and smooth out the top.

Drizzle the slightly cooled caramel over the cream cheese mixture and scatter the nuts on top.

Sprinkle with a little bit of muscovado sugar on top and bake for 30 minutes.

Allow the dessert to cool in the dish and then refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight.

Cut into 12 bars and serve.

TIP: These bars are perfect on their own but are also great when served with a dollop of whipped cream, some vanilla crème fraiche, vanilla custard or vanilla ice cream.

HE misery continues to pile up for Maritzburg United after they were beaten 3-2 by an in-form Cape Town City at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

United, who only recently won their first match after a string of losses, were on the backfoot early in the game thanks to City captain Thami Khize, however they responded after the halfhour mark with Mxolisi Kunene finding

United’s next encounter will see them go up against Amazulu on Friday where they will be desperate for three points as they find themselves having played an extra game over their closest partners on the log, Free State Stars, who lead them by five points.

Soccer legend to be honoured ONE of the long-standing servants of the game and former Maritzburg City owner in the late sixties and early seventies, Moosajee Moses Allie will be honoured in the city on March 3.

Allie was one of the popular figures in local soccer circles and his club was one of the few clubs that put together players of different racial groups during the tough apartheid era in South Africa.

Allie’s outfit, Maritzburg City, used the Royal Show Grounds and Fitz Simon grounds as their home turf.

Allie also discovered a lot of talent in local players and most of them went to play for South African soccer giants like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pi-

rates, Cape Town Spurs, Moroka Swallows and Santos, just to name a few.

Yesteryear heroes such as Henry Pietersen (captain), Archie Andrews, Mthunzi “Shadow” Kota, Alfred “Bomber” Chamane­, Errol Fisher, Narainsamy­ Reddy, Harry Lackay, Jessy­ Louw, Patrick “Cutter” Mthembu­, Bonginkosi “Ace”Mnikathi and others appreciated Allie’s management style and were discovered by him.

“He was a good leader and was able to bring together players from different walks of life, religions and culture. In 1962 we were able to win the KO Cup (national title) and in the final we hammered Aces United by

5-2 at Curries Fountain in Durban,” said former captain Henry Pietersen.

Pietersen says it was just unfortunate that most of the founder players are now late and only two are still alive, namely himself and Sydney Diedericks­.

The co-ordinator of Sunday’s event, Pat Bhengu said it was unfortunate that old stalwarts such as Allie­ were forgotten in local, regional, provincial and national circles. “This man contributed a lot in taking the game to another level and unearthed a lot of talent,” he said.
