MANY people either look forward to the festive period and begin their countdown to Christmas in October, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breather, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action-packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

The “Superhero Journal” is a journey of

self-discovery, and “Everyday Heroes” is a book filled with stories about children similar to the readers.

The “Finding Facts Cut-Outs” book contain instructions for all the games in the box, as well as fun cut-outs. Games include a “Flags of Africa” game, “Word Power Playing Cards” and more.

While we’re on the topic of facts, a heartening statistic is that 12 000 children have been reached through Red Reading Boxes over the past four years.

The Pizza Hut Initiative, in support of the Africa Literacy Project, distributed an additional 2 500 this past year, and READ aims to distribute 3 000 new Red Reading Boxes this year.

An additional Literacy Month activity saw the new Box being launched at Boepakitso Primary School in Soweto on Friday­, September 7.

Children were delighted to explore the boxes and their contents, and were even more thrilled with the donation of several Red Reading Boxes for their school.

Local actor lands major role Sparky Xulu.

ARITZBURG College old boy Sparky Xulu, who has always dreamed of landing the perfect role, has finally seen all his hard work and perseverance pay off after he was cast as the lead character for the first season of Mzansi Magic’s new series The Herd.

Having performed in plays since high school, after matriculating Xulu went on to Rhodes University where he studied the arts, eventually coming home to complete his degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

For nine years thereafter, Xulu worked in the industry in various roles, performing in and producing theatre plays and starring in a few television series until he finally got the call to act as the lead in The Herd this year.

“It’s been a long ride. Throughout my journey of trying to make it in this industry, there have been a lot of tough times. This role could not have come at a better time though because I feel like I was much more prepared this time, having previously had experience on television,” said Xulu.

Xulu said that his previous role on a television show was tough because he had to adjust to television acting, having only had experience in theatre acting before.

“I learned how to tone down my acting for television and add a subtlety to my acting as opposed to the dramatics of the theatre,” said Xulu.

Expressing his relief at receiving a call-up to do a reading for the role, Xulu said that he was lecturing at the time when he received confirmation that he had landed the rule and that it lifted his spirits at a time when he was feeling down.

“In this industry, there are a lots of ups and downs and, when I got the call, it really motivated me to see that my work is paying off and that people are becoming trusting of my skills as an actor and performer,” said Xulu.

While working on The Herd, Xulu said that he was exposed to different kinds of actors and actresses of a different calibre, which he learned from in order to make him better.

OLLOWING a traumatic incident involving the attempted kidnapping of her son from outside his school in Northdale, parent Alveena Deepnarain shared her story with Maritzburg Fever in the hopes of making other parents more aware of the dangers children face.

Deepnarain said that while her son, who is in Grade 5, usually waits for his transport outside the school on the corner of Gandhi and Ramlingum Road, this Friday his transport was running a bit late.

“He said that a black BMW with just one driver inside approached him and told him that I said he must go with the BMW today,” said Deepnarain, adding that her son had said that he had noticed the vehicle parked outside the school premises on Monday.

Luckily for Deepnarain, who had taught her son about the dangers of strangers, her son found this suspicious and immediately called out the man for lying.

“My son told him that he is lying but the man kept on persisting. My son then began to

run and make his way inside the school and noticed that the man had begun to trail him in the car,” “My son went to look for a teacher but could not find one. He then found another exit from the school and saw that his transport was waiting for him where he normally gets picked up and saw that the black BMW was gone,” said Deepnarain.

Hailing her son’s brave efforts in evading the man, Deepnarain said that she and her husband took great care to make their children aware of the dangers out there and always advised them not to trust any strangers claiming to be sent by them.

Deepnarain said that her son has had a hard time feeling safe since the incident.

“He told me he doesn’t want to go to school and only budges when I agree to wait for him outside school before the buzzer goes off,” said Deepnarain, who has had to make adjustments to her work schedule to fetch him from school.

Mountain Rise Police Station spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said that a case of attempted kidnapping had been opened. He also appealed to the public to report any suspicious incidents.

ARREN Goddard will be back in court on December 3 after his trial was postponed last Thursday.

Charged with the rape and sexual assault of a number of young boys at the school where he was employed as a guidance counsellor, eight boys so far have testified that the accused raped or sexually assaulted them during his time at the school.

The incidents allegedly all took place between 2012 and 2016 and Goddard faces up to 15 counts altogether — these include sexual assault and rape, accessing child pornography, and being in possession of child pornography.

Throughout the trial the children have testified through an intermediary in a separate, child friendly room.

The court also took into consideration the toll put on the children by the lengthy period of the trial and allowed for the children to be given breaks when they informed the court that they were tired.

One more witness is set to take the stand to testify against Goddard when the trial resumes.

Post Office and Sassa issues ironed out THE South African Post Office (Sapo) is confident about a smooth takeover of the South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) social grants payments on September 30 when the cash payment services contract expires.

To date, the Post Office has paid 97% of the 5.4 million social grant recipients whose use the new gold Sassa card. Payment is still ongoing at Sassa cash pay-points in line with the payment schedules. They also state 76% of the August grants payments were finalised in the first week of September (that ended on Friday, 7 September).

The August payment run is Sapo’s third since the state-led agreement with Sassa was concluded in December 2017.

Sapo Chief executive officer, and the executive responsible for the implementation of the entity’s social grants payments, Lindiwe Kwele said: “The partnership between Sapo and Sassa benefits millions of social grants beneficiaries, as they are now freed from practices such as unwanted deductions.”

The data for the August pay run demonstrates that, up to 19 September, beneficiaries did 6.5 million ATM transactions and 4.4 million transactions at merchants.

The Post Office is now in its final week of cash payments to just over 300 000 social grants recipients at 1213 payment points. These are in areas that do not have a post office within reach or any national payment infrastructure points.

To date, the Post Office and Sassa have issued the new gold Sassa cards to more than 6.5 million grant recipients.

After retiring, Naidoo established the Retired Officer’s Club in Pietermaritzburg and is the club’s first chairperson. He also established the club in Durban where he was also nominated as the chairperson.

“Throughout my career I have come across a lot of peculiar cases, such as one where an insurance consultant used the fingerprints of a client to access their full claims through photocopying their prints. Back then there were no computers to help identifying varying fingerprints so we had to analyse and find that the fingerprints were

copied and not original,” said Naidoo, who added that he missed his colleagues the most after retirement.

With the job being a stressful one, Naidoo took up fishing once he retired and also established a business but now he finds himself helping his son renovate his house while also spending as much time as possible with his family and friends.

“The career of a policeman does not always promise a long life and I am happy that I get to be with my family and friends a lot more now,” said Naidoo.

South Africans commemorating National Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Day. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF South Africa), the day was aimed at raising awareness and providing information regarding the disorder.

In a brochure provided by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), ADHD is described as a neurobiological condition that renders those it afflicts with impairment. It was noted that ADHD often goes hand in hand with other psychiatric disorders, learning or language problems, and anxiety disorders.

Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour are the three core symptoms of ADHD that are often noted in sufferers.

ADHD can negatively affect a child’s interaction with other children, their time spent playing alone, homework, ability to follow family routine, mealtimes, academic performance, family activities, parent’s stress levels and emotional health.

Speaking on ADHD in the class room, and how a Montessori adapts to accommodate the pupils, Head of Indwe Learning Centre Iris Canham said: “In the Montessori, the environment [classroom] is designed in a way that minimises distraction. This is helpful for the ADHD child who needs an environment that does not overstim-

ulate. Classrooms should promote a learning environment that promotes peace and calm to improve learning. As a first point of reference, we as educators should ask ourselves whether our classrooms are conducive for optimal potential and learning. Montessori follows an individualised approach where pupils work at their own pace. They move from task to task corresponding to their natural rhythm. The Montessori classroom takes cognisance that every child is curious and every child learns differently.”

Elaborating further, Montessori Directress of Indwe Learning Centre Tanja Zilz-Hobson said: “From a Montessori perspective, we look at a child as a whole — socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually and spiritually...We work on the child’s strengths to find out his/her interests etc and incorporate this into their learning environment.”

In offering some tips for parents and teachers, Zilz-Hobson touched on the importance of nutrition, saying parents and teachers should ensure that children are eating balanced meals and exclude or minimise sugars and processed foods. She also stated that brain gym is a wonderful technique to introduce to children.

“Teachers can follow this technique before they start class. It is a group of energising activities used to balance and eliminate learning barriers. Teach children to brush the skin. Brushing the skin awakens neurons,” said Zilz-Hobson.

Focus on ADHD awareness

BYRONE ATHMAN ORMER brigadier and member of the exclusive Criminal Record Centre, formerly known as the Local Fingerprint Office, retired policeman Bala Naidoo sat down with the Maritzburg Fever recently to reminisce about his illustrious career and life after being a policeman.

With a career spanning over 42 years, and having received over 12 medals and decorations during his career, the now Pietermaritzburg-based Naidoo retired in 2010 after having worked in Pietermaritzburg, Pretoria, and Durban.

Having started his career back in 1970, Naidoo says that a lot of things have changed since he was an officer, with some changes being for the better and some for the worse.

“It was difficult back in those days in terms of jobs because we were restricted to certain positions but, in all honesty, crime was a lot less back in those days. I guess you can accredit the crime increase to more people moving to the urban areas but also the service by the police back then was a lot better,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo says that when he and his colleagues were active officers, there was no such thing as overtime and that the extra work they did was for the community.

“We worked together and put a lot of criminals away. The best part about the work we did was when the family we would help at the crime scene would thank us for helping them in their time of need,” said Naidoo.

Managing bipolar mood disorder

BYRONE ATHMAN IETERMARITZBURG dance teacher and enthusiast Judy Umraw, who has been teaching dance and movement since 2005, hopes that her love and passion for the art will continue to inspire and empower women of all ages.

Boasting an impressive resumé, Umraw has appeared on television multiple times and has performed at major international shows alongside some of Bollywood’s finest performers.

“I have been empowering women and the youth since 2005 through dance and movement and have also assisted many charity organisations in fundraising through dance and entertainment,” said Umraw.

Umraw not only hosts a dance class in Raisethorpe but also carries out various workshops in Pietermaritzburg, Durban, and Johannesburg.

“We teach and perform a unique blend of Yoga, Tai chi, Oriental, Bollywood, Spanish, Hip-Hop and Zulu dance genres,” said Umraw.

“These dances don’t only serve to entertain but offer a way to boost selfconfidence and self-image for the new, young dancers who are performing them,” said Umraw.

ACCORDING to the SA Depression & Anxiety Organisation: “Bipolar disorder is a psychological illness marked by extreme changes in mood, energy, and behaviour. That is why doctors classify it as a mood disorder which involves episodes of serious mania and depression. If left undiagnosed and un-medicated, your life can be catastrophically affected.

“Bipolar disorder is not restricted to any social class, race, religion or nationality. Many people with Bipolar Disorder are famous and have created literary and fine-art masterpieces, or even led their nations in critical times in history.”

A Howick woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her story about her life with bipolar discorder.

“Approximately 20 odd years ago, I lost my husband in a very tragic way.

I should have started counselling but I left things until a year had passed, when I suddenly became very ill.

“Prior to this ‘breakdown’ I had been seeing a doctor with various complaints, none of which had been diagnosed as anything to do with exactly what was wrong with me. Unfortunately, with Bipolar Mood Disorder, before it becomes fully blown you are normally presenting with one particular mood, which is normally depression. Because of this, you are continually being put into the category of suffering from anxiety and depression.

“In my case, it took a long time of trial and error before it became apparent that this medication was not doing what it was prescribed to do (the last trail resulted in a enormous surge of mania).

“With this terrible out of control behaviour, I was rushed into a psychiatric hospital in Durban where it was decided after a few days that it would be a good idea for me to have ECT, or shock therapy treatment, the reason being that there had never been any episodes of mania prior and the medical professionals had still not cottoned on to the fact that I was displaying both manic and depressive behaviour.

“On thinking back, there had been many milder episodes that I had never sought treatment for. This was due to the fact that I had gone on massive spending sprees and was always the life and soul at social functions, this displayed in the manic episodes.

“After having had the ‘shock therapy’, I changed psychiatrists and the new professional diagnosed me immediately as being Bipolar with psychotic features.

“My first thought when I was diagnosed was that I would just have to take a few tablets and I would be back to normal. I was relieved to find out at last that this ‘illusive thing’ did actually exist, but this was only the first step towards becoming stablised and regaining a quality of life.

“Being a complex illness makes it difficult to get the mix of medication right. In order to be stable, psychological stressors must be dealt with and this works hand in hand with medication. In order to access an improved quality of life I require ongoing adjustments of my meds.

“I have taken responsibility for myself by sticking religiously to my medical regime.

“I miss a lot of things that I loved and used to be able to do, but have tried to compensate by making my life as

stress-free as possible. That is why I keep this illness to myself — I lead a double life, walking a very fine line and it can be terribly exhausting on a daily basis. The reason for this non-disclosure is that there is a terrible stigma attached to any mental illness and people have pre-conceived ideas of how a person like myself should be approached under any situation.

“I find that people think that I am of lower intellect on discovering that I suffer from Bipolar Disorder, and this is particularly distressing and false since some of the most intellectual and famous people have also suffered from mental illness, Bipolar in particular, namely: Abraham Lincoln, Virginia Woolf, Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, and Vincent van Gogh, to name just a few.

“Most of all, I miss the person I used to be, however, I do know that Bipolar Disorder does not define who you are — I have learnt to wear different coats for different seasons and this was the most difficult thing to come to terms with. “My psychologist has helped me to accept that I am no longer the person that I used to be.

“The main thing that I have learnt is that by symptom management and actively engaging in accessing the treatment I require, I have been able to attain a quality of life which I want for myself.

“I have also learnt all I can about my illness, which has enabled me to make good decisions about my treatment in order to keep my moods stabilised.

“The quality of our lives can also be greatly enhanced by the support of other people.

“Remember mental illness can happen to anyone, at anytime.”

History repeats itself >>The infiltration of the ANC’s MK by others occurred while the party was in exile, and it is happening again CLIVE NDOU THE infiltration of the ANC’s Mkhonto weSizwe Vets by criminal elements who have taken advantage of the excombatants’ illegal occupation of flats in Pietermaritzburg’s Aloe Ridge rental complex is a classic case of history repeating itself.

Even the MK’s Moses Mabhida leadership that has endorsed the controversial campaign by a group of former ANC soldiers to demand jobs, houses and tenders at gunpoint, has admitted that the majority of people now occupying the close to 300 hijacked Aloe Ridge flats are not war vets.

Besides, some of the illegal occupiers who claim to be war vets are in their early 20s and were not even born when the ANC was unbanned in 1990 — a move that saw the former liberation movement permanently halting its MK recruitment campaign.

But even in exile, the ANC military wing battled to fend off a wave of infiltrations, mainly by agents of the apartheid government.

Former president Jacob Zuma, whom many love to hate, was head of the ANC’s notorious Imbokodo intelligence unit, the key purpose of which was to crush infiltrators.

Several ANC recruits, who members of Imbokodo suspected of being agents sent by the apartheid government to spy on ANC military activities in exile, were tortured to death.

Former Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Joe Seremane’s brother, Timothy, was one of the MK people who was executed by members of Imbokodo after being suspected of being an apartheid spy.

A former high-ranking MK officer, General Masondo, in 1998 confessed to having ordered the execution of Timothy, who was an MK operative stationed in Angola in the early eighties.

While Timothy’s family managed to get closure following Masondo’s confession, several others whose family members were killed while in ANC exile camps are yet to be told how their loved ones died.

Whether the methods and tactics

employed by the Zuma–led Imbokodo were justified is neither here nor there.

The fact of the matter is that the ANC’s military wing in exile was vulnerable to infiltration.

When the ANC recruited activists, mainly township youth, to join what were known as self-defence units (SDUs), which operated within the country in the eighties to counter what the party described at the time as apartheid repression, the units were also infiltrated by various interests.

At one level the SDUs where infiltrated by apartheid agents known as Askaris.

“I approached the group of ANC activists on whom we had gathered information that they were planning to use limpet mines to blow up electrical substations in the area. I pretended to be a member of Mkhonto weSizwe,” former Askari, Daniel Nkala, told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission during his application for amnesty in 1998.

Nkala, who worked with the notorious Askari and apartheid hitman Joe Mamasela, handed the activists boo-

by-trapped hand grenades on the East Rand, which when the young ANC members attempted to use, blew up on the activists, killing eight of them.

At another level, the SDUs, whose other purpose was to defend township residents against what the ANC claimed where security threats posed

by Inkatha, were also infiltrated by township criminals who were later branded com tsotsis.

The com tsotsi would knock on people’s doors on the pretext of conducting patrols, only to rob residents once allowed into their homes.

Today in KwaZulu-Natal, a Mafiastyle lobby group claiming to be implementing the ANC’s radical economic transformation (RET) programme has been intimidating contractors working on government projects.

Several contractors working on government projects around the Durban area have been forced to abandon work after members of the group threatened to attack them if they did not give them a stake in the project.

Two weeks ago, a gang affiliated to the group held Department of Health

senior officials hostage during a departmental meeting in Pietermaritzburg.

The group, which then forced the head of the department, Musa Gumede, to draft a letter reversing an earlier decision to shift the department’s supply chain unit head to another unit, accused Gumede of failing to implement the ANC’s RET programme seeking to empower black businesspeople.

While President Cyril Ramaphosa, who branded the group a bunch of “robbers”, has called for tough action against members of the lobby group, more than two decades after the disbandment of both MK and the SDUs, the conduct of the individuals has taken the ANC back to the same position it was in decades ago — an organisation infested with infiltrators.

ANC provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala was spot on when he said: “We defeated this phenomenon before but now it’s re-emerging.”

But the bright side of this is that this rot is in the process of being stopped and reversed, meaning in future we will make much better use of state resources.

We are technically in recession right now, but probably not for long.

Even Moody’s Investor Services declared last week that it expects South Africa’s economic growth to pick up slowly and so likely avoid a credit rating downgrade. “We expect a broadbased recovery, and the worst is probably behind us,” it said.

Last week’s crime statistics are a source of deep concern. But for the first time in years, we now have respected police professionals heading the SAPS,

Hawks and crime intelligence, so there is reason to be hopeful.

There is also hope that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will be more functional soon and that the rule of law and accountability will be fully restored.

The testimony before the Zondo and Nugent commissions is contributing to the tide turning against corruption in the public and private sectors.

Once the NPA and the Hawks are up and running, we can expect to witness politicians, senior public servants and businesspeople being led through the jail doors wearing orange uniforms.

The campaign to change the property clause in the Constitution even before the feasibility and consequences were calculated has done serious damage and raised many fears. But we have enough reason now to accept that no property will be expropriated arbitrarily and that the damage to the economy, agriculture and food securi-

ty will be minimal.

If we get an accelerated and ambitious land reform programme resulting from this campaign, it would have been worth the drama.

Ramaphosa is being hamstrung by his opponents in the ANC, but the ousting of North West’s Supra Mahumapelo and the unity list of leadership in KZN show that he’s slowly winning the battle. As I write this, I have reason to believe that Ace Magashule, secretary-general of the ANC and chief planner of Ramaphosa’s demise, is increasingly being isolated and could be neutralised before long.The days until next year’s general election will be dark and stormy. Many more people will lose their jobs. Prices are going to go up. But I have little doubt that we will emerge from this more or less in one piece, and probably a bit stronger.

There is reason for hope HOPE has become the scarcest commodity in South Africa. Most citizens are depressed about their future prospects as a barrage of bad news about the economy and politics overwhelms them daily.

Perhaps we should do as the old hymn asks us to: “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, count your many blessings, name them one by one.”

The secret is to see beyond the smoke and mirrors, to close your ears to the incessant noise for a while and soberly assess what lies at the root of our problems; to notice the many green shoots appearing.

We also need to see the professional prophets of doom for what they really are. Some of these predictors of Armageddon are simply pessimists by nature, but many struggle to hide their schadenfreude that a black government, and an ANC government, could

mess up so badly.

South Africa indeed got a second chance when the ANC got rid of Jacob Zuma nine months ago and replaced him with Cyril Ramaphosa. Many of us were just a little naïve to believe that the massive damage the Zuma regime had inflicted on our politics, our nation and our economy, could be undone in a short time.

Ramaphosa surely has his shortcomings, but we should laugh at those who now call him Zuma Lite. This accusation usually comes from opposition parties that are embarrassed that they focused solely on Zuma for years and had no strategy when he left the Union Buildings.

Our economy is in dire straits, no doubt about that. Zuma and Co’s maladministration, state capture and corruption cost the state more than R100 billion, left our state-owned enterprises very deep in debt and foreign debt sky-high. It knee-capped our revenue

And Jacob Zuma loudly proclaimed in a convoluted exercise in irrationality that state capture in South Africa is a myth in spite of overwhelming evidence from reliable sources that he, and his family and political allies, have benefited massively from it.

Post-modernist chickens have come home to roost. Smart-alec academics who smugly argued that there are competing versions of truth are now captives of rightwing populism.

There is truth and it is the bedrock of democracy whose survival depends upon the exposure of blatant lies and falsehood. The alternative is a world run by fraudsters and crooks.

A number of reasons to celebrate

MANY people either look forward to the festive period and begin their countdown to Christmas in October, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breather, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action-packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your stories.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament session coverage because you never know what to expect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by-elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarkable women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

HERE’S something about birthdays that gets everyone excited, and although we’re celebrating the adult status of a newspaper and not a human being, the excitement at the Maritzburg Fever is no less.

The Mirror, as many of you will remember, transitioned into the Maritzburg Fever in July, 2011 after Media24 announced changes to its community titles.

Changes were made to the name and design of the paper but the quality news reported on every week, remained the same.

In 2016, the newspaper was completely revamped — the design and layout became more vibrant, relaxed and colourful, and the types of stories were switched from hard news to soft news.

T has been a pleasure watching the Maritzburg Fever grow into the brand that it is today.

With the first edition of the Mirror hitting the streets 20 years ago to the vibrant paper that it is today, it’s easy to see that the Fever has established itself as a platform that highlights community achievement and addresses pressing issues head on.

The success of the title has always been due to the dedicated team who work to ensure that the needs of the community are met.

When it was time to pass on the reigns from the previous publishing editor, Bridget Siebert, we didn’t have to look too far.

The current publisher, Marijke van Bosch, and editor Candyce Krishna have brought their wealth of experience in community newspapers to develop the product that it is today.

Through research, getting their hands dirty in the community with the Fever’s dedicated team of sales representatives and a

journalist, they have developed the Fever into the brand that it is today.

On a weekly basis, it is a pleasure to read about a designer making headlines internationally and I have to say Pietermaritzburg definitely has some of the best bakers in the province. I am also so impressed when I read about the community rallying together to help those in need or going on a rally to bring down crime statistics – this is definitely a proud community.

HEN I took on the position of editor at Maritzburg Fever, I didn’t know what to expect.

But, being the positive person that I am, I began to think that my relocation will be what I make of it and that made it slightly easier for me to leave the big blue ocean and sea sand of Port Shepstone and head to the either very cold or very hot Pietermaritzburg.

My positive attitude did contribute much but I have had some help along the way too, from many people.

This column, however, lends itself to a huge mention of the help I received from you, the reader.

The second week of April 2017 is a week that I will never forget.

After the article titled “Maritzburg Fever has a new editor” appeared in the paper, I was inundated with calls, e-mails and visits. It was your warm reception that gave me the affirmation that I needed.

Since then, the Maritzburg Fever has experienced change.

20th Birthday As we turned 20...

IETERMARITZBURG is well known for producing stellar athletes who push the boundaries of sport and strive to break records in their respective fields.

As a journalist for the Maritzburg Fever, who also happens to cover sport as well as news, I have become immersed in the sport culture of this great city, often times getting to meet upcoming stars in their respective fields.

One such athlete is Beanie Thies, who first appeared in the Maritzburg Fever in the May 2 edition under the title of “SA’s national Downhill Champion.”

At the age of only 16, Thies won in the youth category in South Africa and placed second overall in the female division.

Not one to stop at the national level, Thies went on to ply her trade internationally this year, cementing her status as one of the best downhill riders in the world in her age group after she placed second in her age group at the IXS Rookies World Championships, held in Serfaus Fiss Ladis in Austria.

The Maritzburg Fever reported on this in our August 22 edition in an article titled, “Beanie places second in Europe.”

Ever one to reach higher, Thies has expressed her desire for the sport to one day be recognised

as an Olympic sport so that one day she can make South Africa proud at one of the greatest sporting events in the world so, watch this space.

Congratulations Stories that stuck with us in 2018 BEING a journalist, one tends to be exposed to hundreds of stories in a year and sometimes it is easy to forget the remarkable stories that you come across while practicing your trade.

Although there are a number of stories that have stuck with me long after I covered them, I have selected two stories from this year’s Maritzburg Fever that I think highlight the spirit and love of the Pietermaritzburg people.

“Help given instantly to family”, published on May 2, was one such story.

After a fire had ravaged a home being shared by various tenants on Lahore Road in Northdale, it was amazing to see a community come their aid, regardless of financial stature or race. Many residents were left homeless and without possessions after the fire destroyed everything in its path. Northdale residents, however, did not allow their fellow man to go on without aid and organised various donations to the tenants of the house, such as daily food drops as well as banding together to raise funds for supplies.

In the June 13 edition “We need help”, on page five, was another story that stuck with me.

This was such a heartbreaking story for me to cover.

To sit there and listen to the anguish this family suffered after their daughter was run over by a motorbike in Johannesburg was heartbreaking. The strength of the mother, who put aside her problems to focus on her daughter, was overwhelming for me. To see someone so willing to put aside their personal turmoil for the better of another was inspiring.

Instant belief in humanity sparked in me the next day as the response to the article was immeasurable.

Countless e-mails flooded my inbox and the phone rang continuously as people offered to help the family.

These are just some of the top stories from the Maritzburg Fever this year, and there is much more to come. Thank you to our readers and advertisers for choosing the Maritzburg Fever.

Lifestyle event heads to a new venue

HE Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience is an initiative which is aimed at boosting the local economy of the city of Pietermaritzburg.

It is a platform created to support local businesses by giving them an opportunity to showcase their products and services. The event is a market setup which allows businesses in the food, fashion, arts and craft, accessories, beverages and fresh produce industries to trade. The term Chilla Nathi is a slang term which means “relax with us”.

Initially, when the event started in 2010, the organisers saw a unique opportunity to provide a laid back, picnic setup with entertainment for people in mainly the age group of 21-35yrs. It was all about providing organised entertainment for people that hang around the parks and venues where socialites gather.

“After four years of operating as an events company, we realized that the event could be a vehicle that provides an opportunity for businesses to trade while the picnic was under way. This prompted us to consider the evolution of the brand and a shift in thinking where events are concerned. We therefore had to consider changing the name from Chilla Nathi Sessions to Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience in 2017, which was more in line with the new business objectives.

“We have successfully hosted 10 events in Pietermaritzburg. The number of visitors that attend the event has grown to over 1 000 visitors monthly,” said Sbonga Shelembe of the Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience.

“As a family oriented lifestyle event, we are excited about our partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), or the Botanical Gardens as we know it. The move from Alexandra Park, Mayor’s Garden to the magnificent Botanical Gardens will ensure that our event stays family oriented.

“Safety has always been a priority for our visitors, which is why we did not think twice when SanbiI showed

interest in our event. The garden provides a space where people can relax and enjoy themselves,” Shelembe said.

Now that the event has a permanent home, visitors can expect a relaxed and safe environment with loads of delicious cuisines from different experienced chefs and caterers. They can also expect an unforgettable shopping experience with fashion, arts, crafts, fashion accessories, beverages, fresh produce, household goods and services offered by different stalls all the while they are being entertained by local bands and DJs. A special food demonstration area will be set up where patrons can participate in the sharing of various recipes with professional chefs.

The Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience is a fun-filled day for the whole family. Parents can leave their little

ones at the Chilla Nathi Kiddies Craft Village, where they will be entertained, while they walk around doing some shopping.

Other news worth sharing is the new partnership between Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience and Wildlands, a local environmental NPO making a sustainability difference in a number of communities in South Africa.

Wildlands has networks in 60 communities across KwaZulu-Natal, Western, Northern and Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, transforming the lives of thousands of South Africans and improving their livelihoods through innovative sustainable programs. These programs enable small business development, food security, conservation, recycling and restoration efforts, and offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities

The partnership with Wildlands is centred around the Wildlands’ #GOGREEN initiative. #GOGREEN is a waste management plan that offers a sustainable solution to collecting waste generated during events. Recycling stations will be set up at strategic points at the event where people will access them to dispose of their waste. All the waste will be separated and recycled at the Wildlands Recycling depot in Howick.

ta re C i a d n u y H 18 0 2 : y il m fa It’s GORDON HALL BIG WHERE IT COUNTS Creta, currently the smallest of Hyundai’s people carriers (the sub-compact Kona/Kauai will be here soon), is no lightweight when it comes to earning its keep, having cornered around 33% of its particular market segment since being launched here last year.

It wasn’t really due for a facelift but the design studios decided that all family members needed nose jobs, eyelid tucks and butt lifts. Creta was therefore given a new cascading grille, LED daytime running lights, twotone bumpers, new skid plate and fog lamps, redone roof rails and a subtly restyled rear.

They left the interior alone, so buyers can enjoy the familiar imitation leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel with satellite controls and six-speaker infotainment centre with 8” colour touchscreen.

It’s ready for satnav; all you need is the SD card at R2 522.

Also left alone is the three-model product range featuring 1600 cc petrol or diesel engines, six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes and common trim at midrange executive level.

This provides alloy wheels with 205/65R16 tyres and fully sized spare, ABS brakes with EBD, six airbags, projection headlamps with static bending function, fog lamps at both ends, automatically locking doors, manual air conditioner, follow-me lighting, powered windows all around with one-touch and anti-pinch for the

driver, electric mirrors with indicator repeaters and folding function, reversing camera with beepers and a trip computer.

The petrol engine, offered with choice of manual or automatic transmission, is naturally aspirated and develops 90 kW/150 Nm. Claimed average fuel consumption numbers are 7.9 litres per 100 km (manual) and 8.4 l/100 km with the automatic.

The turbodiesel motor comes with automatic only and puts out 94 kW and 260 Nm. Combined cycle fuel consumption is said to be 7.4 l/100 km. Zero to 100 km/h sprint times are around 12 seconds for all versions and maximum speeds are between 165- and 179 km/h depending on configuration.

Practicalities include 402 litres of load volume behind the split-and-fold rear seats, speed hump-mocking ground clearance of 190 mm and a fairly tight turning circle of 10.6 metres.

Braked towing capacity ranges from 900- to 1100 kg, also dependent on configuration. Fully grown back seat passengers can wallow in luxurious space, featuring a folding armrest with cupholders, and share the aircon via repeater vents in the centre console.

We drove one just over a year ago and noted: “…we took it out into agricultural country over a mix of gravel roads with small embedded stones (tooth rattling stuff in lesser vehicles) and long stretches of ‘washboard’.

“It soaked up whatever we aimed it at and while not quite as absorbent as really expensive air suspension, it coped well and remained on course all the time.”

Despite appearing rather small on paper, it’s actually quite big where it counts, performs more than adequately and will move a family of five plus luggage comfortably. Any more is probably wasteful.

Hauling loads, and people, in stylish and reliable comfort WHERE IT FITS IS Honda’s HR-V a small-to-medium SUV, an MPV, or maybe a Crossover? It has features of all of these. Whatever the case, it performs its loadand people-carrying functions stylishly, comfortably, decently economically and more reliably than many others. Honda has an excellent reputation for that. It slots neatly between the company’s BR-V and CR-V offerings.

Although it has been around in other parts of the world since 1999, we first saw it in 2015. It presently accounts for a good percentage of Honda SA’s sales, averaging 101 units per month over the past year.

Now, as then, its two-model lineup consists of two trim levels and two engines - 1.5-litre Comfort and 1.8-litre Elegance.

As its name implies, Elegance level is, well, more elegant.

That means leather upholstery rather than fabric; warmed front seats; automatic LED headlamps and daytime running lights; automatic, dual zone climate control; six, rather than four, speakers in the sound system; rear parking sensors and camera; push-button starting; folding external mirrors and rain sensing wipers.

Both levels feature alloy wheels, one-touch powered windows, cruise control with speed limiter, six airbags, ISOFix baby seat anchors, ABS brakes with EBA and EBD, hill holder, vehicle stability control, hands-free telephone and music streaming via Bluetooth and an onboard computer. Also common to both is the latest generation of Honda’s constant velocity transmission with electronic stepping.

This provides seven virtual gears and behaviour closely approximating a good torque converter automatic. It works much better than earlier CVTs, so feel confident about trying it out.

Other engineering details include McPherson strut front suspension, a torsion beam at the back, disc brakes at both ends, electrically assisted power steering and an electric parking brake.

Apart from being able to activate and release itself, it’s more dependable because it doesn’t rely on fallible humans to engage it properly. It never needs adjusting either.

As a matter of interest, according to a recent British survey, only 39% of car manufacturers still use traditional hand brakes throughout their model ranges. As before, the 1.5 has a 40-litre fuel tank and it stands tall with 185 mm of ground

clearance versus the 1800’s 50 litres and 170 mm. The bigger tank evidently extends downwards a bit. New to Comfort is a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) that enables screen mirroring of Smartphones and access to device-

kicks in and keeps pulling from just above idle to its peak at 4 200 rpm.

The payoff lies in lower revs and good economy.

You don’t need to stretch for the gear lever. It’s about midway between knee and hip, even when snicking smoothly into first, third or fifth. Suzuki says the shifting action was improved recently by optimising spring rates in the selector mechanisms to help gears “pop” into place more easily. Let’s just say it’s as smooth as your toast knife swishing through soft margarine.

Steering is great too, turning the car easily in 9,6 metres, while the suspension is moderately firm but soaks up bumps well.

DZire is a plain and simple, nononsense, family sedan that gives users what they really need without unnecessary gadgetry. It handles well, pulls strongly, can be driven raucously when you want to and manages it all with rather impressive real-life fuel economy.

Luggage space grew too, from 300 litres to 378, although part of that is because the spare wheel shrank, from full size in the previous edition, to spacesaver.

On the other hand, new since then is that the boot now opens with a squeeze pad rather than by key. The lid is still untrimmed, unfortunately, so you might want to be careful when using the pull-down slots provided.

Other changes include a folddown armrest with cup holders in the rear seat back, a central courtesy light so you can see more clearly when securing the heirs into their seats and air-vent repeaters in the central console.

As for appearances, Swift and DZire have dissimilar front “faces” and the central vents on top of their dashboards are different.

Something users probably won’t notice is that, while all other gear-

E subconsciously think of Suzuki’s DZire as a booted Swift, although the company recently decided to market the ranges separately. The sedan will be more family focused.

Similarities include the Heartect build platform, 1197 cc engine, fivespeed manual and automated manual (AMT) gearboxes and basic spec levels. But there are differences that make DZire somewhat more than just a Swift with caboose.

It is 155 mm longer, for example, but still measures just short of four metres so it can catch an Indian government tax break based on size. And although the new DZire’s overall length is what it was in the previous version, its wheelbase grew by 20 millimetres to 2 450.

That, and design tweaks, increased most internal measurements noticeably, with knee room the biggest winner. The only factor still causing discomfort for tall back-seat riders is headroom — our 6’1” tester had

and custody issues. They also do commercial law and have the expertise to draught complex contracts and other documents.

Manickum, who was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, has several degrees including a Masters degree in Criminal Law and Procedure from UNISA. “I came from a humble background. I have five siblings and my dad worked in a local shoe factory, so I always knew that my parents didn’t have money to send me to university,” Manickum said. “That’s why I worked and studied for my degrees through correspondence.”

Manickum married his wife, Pinky, at a young age and had to juggle the responsibilities of marriage and fatherhood with his studies, saying: “Without the amazing support of my wife, I would never have been able to pursue my dreams to become a lawyer and to start my own practice.”

After graduating, he did his articles with an established local firm. After working there for a while as a qualified attorney, he became a director of a firm with seven directors, including himself. Manickum later spent nine years helping the indigent and vulnerable people in society to get legal advice and assistance.

Three years ago he opened his own practice, initially working from shared premises in Leathern Street, before moving into his new office at Block B, 393 Jabu Ndlovu Street.

FTER chasing his dream of winning the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) South Africa Men’s under 80 kg competition for over seven years, Brian Cele’s hard work finally paid off when the personal trainer won the event and qualified for the world competition, which will be held in Benidorm Alicante, Spain in November.

“It all felt so overwhelming that I actually lost it while on stage and cried, realising that I had finally won this competition and was most likely going to be selected to compete in Spain,” said Cele.

He added that although he won this competition the work doesn’t stop, it is just a step in the right direction. Cele, who has been training for over 10 years, said that he hadn’t always had a dream of becoming a bodybuilder but that he started training in Grade 11 as he only weighed 45kg and wasn’t happy with his physique.

“In the beginning it was never about being a bodybuilder but, after about two years, I had put on a bit of size and one day I picked up a Muscle Evolution magazine and finally decided to start taking bodybuilding seriously,” said Cele.

Cele is no stranger to winning competitions but says that this victory was the one that he had been chasing for a long time.

“I have had a lot of help along the way, with countless people contributing to getting me to where I am today.

Teams to score for Kay Parus IN memory of the late Kay Parus, the Newholmes Football Association (NFA) are hosting a football tournament, which commenced on September 21 and will run until October 20.

All teams affiliated with the NFA will be taking part in the tournament.

The late Parus was an esteemed and accomplished Hillview FC player and served as the president of the club from 1965.

He was the founder of the Hillview Easter Soccer Tournament and also served in many sporting organisations in an official capacity; namely Northdale Cricket Union, Hillview Cricket Club, PMB District Netball Union, Northern Natal Soccer Board and Newholmes Football Association.

He was instrumental in re-affiliating Maritzburg FC in the professional league and was also a member of the South African delegation that received all international players during the 1996 African Cup of Nations.

Parus dedicated himself to luring the youth away from drug and alcohol abuse and secured the previous volleyball grounds on Newholmes Way, thus providing for the youth to engage in sport.

His vision was to create a sporting ground in Newholmes Way for the community, which was achieved.

His accomplishment and contribution to racial sport will forever be remembered.

The tournament will end with a presentation and a braai celebrating the event on October 20.

“It has not been an easy journey.

Everyone is quick to look at the end result but people don’t realise the effort that goes into this. This is a very expensive lifestyle as healthy food is not cheap and over the years your body starts taking a beating. There were many times when I felt like giving up,” said Cele, who added that as much as bodybuilding affects you physically, it also affects you mentally.

Going forward Cele said that he is not sure what to expect in Spain but he is happy not knowing because that way he will not put any added pressure on himself and will continue to do what he does in the best way possible, and hopefully place in the top six in the world in the process.

“I just want to reiterate to everyone that I am far from the perfect bodybuilder out there but, for anyone who wants to get into this sport, I would like to say that nothing happens overnight and you have to believe in yourself while working hard and being positive to achieve your dreams,” ended Cele.
