HIEF education officer for the KZN Museum Marsha Kalika was one of eight winners — and a winner for the second time in a row — at the annual Scifest awards held in Grahamstown last week.

Inspired by her studies and seeing people stop near the toll on the N3 to collect spring water, Kalika set out to create an easy and simple water filtration project and presented this project through her workshop on “Filtration is Purification”, thus resulting in her receiving the award for Best Workshop: Outreach category.

“I am humbled to have won this award and honoured that the work I am doing is being recognised,” said Kalika.

With this year’s theme at the Scifest awards being “Discover your Element”, Kalika said that she wanted to show the power of H2O and use simple items to teach pupils and people that they did not need fancy equipment and expensive items when embarking on experiments.

Her presentation was on a homemade filtration system that is based on the soil profile, using rock, stones and sand. The only addition to the system was the activated charcoal that removes

Party of Hope for cancer BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com THE Party of Hope fundraiser for cancer was hosted at the Forest Hill Primary School on Thursday, much to the excitement of the pupils at school.

Fundraiser for cancer and volunteer for the Voices of Pietermaritzburg group on Facebook that raises funds for worthy causes, Deidre De Wee, said it was a fun and successful initiative to get involved in with the pupils.

Cupcakes, sponsored by various businesses and communities among Pietermaritzburg, were sold on the day, with De Wee and her volunteers managed to raise a significant amount that will be donated towards treatment for children with cancer.

“It was so exciting because children love sugar and more so cupcakes. The excitement on their faces was priceless as they got to see the variety they could choose from,” said De Wee of the opportunity to raise funds for cancer and make children happy.

De Wee said her goal was to host at least one Party of Hope per a month because she believed that every bit helps towards funding for cancer and is always needed.

Speaking on the actual award ceremony, Kalika said that scientists from across the world were in attendance to promote science among pupils and to push them toward pursuing a career in science.

“Receiving the award felt great but the actual feeling of a project working in the end cannot be explained, it is a feeling that is inexplicable,” said a joyful Kalika.

Hardship inspires evangelist’s book BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com

A

FTER dealing with alcoholism, being addicted to drugs and experiencing family problems through all the other turmoil, evangelist Roland Dayaram was able to come through it the wiser and now has written his own book titled Your Destiny Awaits You. The book is inspired by his own events and sparked by the suicide of a young child.

“My book tells my story of hardship, pain and reckless living. I have no experience as an author but through God all things are possible,” said Dayaram, who added that he was at a low point in his life riddled by anger, frustration and alcoholism when he finally received God and began to make positive changes in his life.

Dayaram said his inspiration for the book came when he heard of a 12-year-old committing suicide.

“I thought about what that child must have been going through. I thought as parents we needed to be the voice of reason, the comfort and pillars of strength that our children needed in their lives to prevent this,” said Dayaram, who recalled going through a difficult time with his daughter when she was 14 years old.

Dayaram said that when his daughter was going down a road of destruction he didn’t focus on her faults but rather saw the good in her and encouraged and motivated her to believe that life would get better.

“My book helps parents to understand this generation of adolescents and how to approach them when they are faced with problems and how to handle your child by being patient and rational, so your child does not become a victim of suicide,” he said.

“My book addresses relevant and controversial issues; how to bond as a family, teaches the youth to live a purpose driven life and to reach their destiny.”

Questioning life itself in the book, Dayaram asks whether we are content in the direction we are heading and if we are doing everything we can be doing to become everything we seek to be in life.

Included in his books are the challenges being faced by families across South Africa and does not isolate any race group, according to Dayaram.

“God’s amazing love and grace surpasses all boundaries of religion, race and nationality. Together we can all make a difference.

Currently there are 5 000 books being

printed but the book will only be released in October at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Dayaram said the book has been read and backed by various religious leaders across South Africa.

“My aim is to set up seminars in communities that will give our children hope.

People can visit my Facebook page, Soul Winners 4 Jesus Music, and post their words of hope as we would love to hear their stories,”said Dayaram.

Arts, crafts and more at the museum this holiday The KZN Museum is definitely the place to visit this end of term break. The museum has ensured two weeks of fun activities to make sure no one will be bored during the holiday.

Petition to save the city

OLLOWING a public community meeting held in February, Anthony Waldhausen took it upon himself to co-ordinate a petition campaign highlighting the grievances and demands of the people from the meeting to deliver to the mayor.

“Everyone at the meeting spoke of how they are at their wits end regarding the dysfunctionality of the municipality, focusing on various reports of mismanagement of public funds in the papers.”

“The people complained of various issues from potholes to dumping and I thought it would be a good idea for us to have our complaints recognised through a petition,” said Waldhausen, whose goal is to gather 10% of the population’s signatures.

Waldhausen has since set up an online petition with the Awethu Amandla website and has gone viral on social media as well as also developing a hard copy of the petition for those who do not have access to the Internet and to maximise residential participation.

Appealing to all residents of Pietermaritzburg, Waldhausen said: “The ground swell of support from all residents in Msunduzi Municipality has been encouraging. I meet people on the ground who speak of their sad-

ness, frustrations, hopelessness, despair and unhappiness of the current situation of the municipality [and] there are some who have come forward to ask what more they can do.

“We call on all residents, businesses, NGOs, political parties, religious institutions, traditional leadership, trade unions to support this petition and sign up.

“We all aware of the national and provincial elections on May 8 and this would be an opportunity for residents of Msunduzi to take a stand and vote to bring about the change we need for the better of the city.”

Since beginning the campaign, Waldhausen said that they have gathered over 5 500 signatures but emphasised that they needed more.

Once Waldhausen receives the necessary number of signatures or by the deadline date, residents will then march to the mayor’s office and hand over the petition addressing their grievances and have stated that should the mayor not address these issues they would petition for the national minister and provincial MEC for Cogta to intervene and place the municipality under administration for a second time.

AREAS of Pietermaritzburg were left in complete darkness for much of the weekend after contributing factors such as load shedding and an exploded substation on the corner of Pietermaritz and West Street resulted in power outages.

The city centre, Wembley, Clarendon and Prestbury all supplied by the Masons Substation were affected.

Residents say they heard loud bangs from as early as 10 am which lead them to realise that the substation was on fire.

Thobeka Mafumbatha, the municipal spokesperson, said that the explosion was due to failure on the 11kV fault incomer. “No one was injured when the explosion occurred and the incident is currently still being investigated. Power was restored in most of the areas within hours of the explosion,” said Mafumbatha.

With load shedding expected to be on the increase throughout Pietermaritzburg, many residents have stressed that their wallets are being hurt significantly by the load shedding with many families having to pay for added costs such as takeaway due to their lights being turned off around meal times.

Minimise the cost of load shedding on your pocket The nationwide load shedding can be a costly inconvenience for South African households that plan their monthly budgets well in advance.

South African households are already under pressure due to recent increases in fuel prices and other costs of living. Load shedding adds to the financial burden,

This will help you prepare and budget for your weekly food purchases accordingly and will help reduce wastage. Try not to purchase food items that require a freezer as with load shedding, items which require cold storage could go to waste.

• Shop on a weekly basis for groceries and certain items. Ensure that you stick to your meal planner and shop just enough for the week.

• Travel plans need to be also be made around load shedding to avoid being stuck in traffic for extended periods. Allocate enough time for travel purposes to ensure that you don’t miss vital appointments.

• Consider minimising your reliance on electricity by looking at affordable alternatives such as buying a gas stove.

Successful weekend for Mountain Rise police

BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com THE Mountain Rise police detectives and Vispol Units conducted a successful raid operation over the weekend within their designated policing areas.

A total of 22 people were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, possession of drugs, liquor related incidents, failing to comply with conditions of liquor licences, breach of peace, drunken driving and illegal immigrants.

All suspects were detained at the Mountain Rise police station for further investigation and will appear in court soon.

“Black Zimbabweans are the only others who are at the same level as us in terms of work ethic,” said Singh.

Singh went on to say that the reason for the influx of informal settlements in the Indian communities was to influence voting patterns in favour of the ANC. He added that black South Africans who are homeless in the community are dirtying the streets by urinating and defecating, causing it to “stink”.

“Our intelligent children are being

blocked from fair entry into university because the government is only granting Black students access to university education,” said Singh.

After Singh’s speech, ANC Moses Mabhida Regional Task Team (RTT) member Mzi Thebolla told the public after being interrupted that the policies in place by the ANC government favoured black Africans, Indians, Coloureds and White females.

When outside, Oumar questioned the motives of Singh in kicking out the policeman whom he thought was a spy

and his own removal, stating that Singh was dividing the community through his actions.

After the meeting, community leader and activist Jay Jugwanth spoke out against the controversy surrounding the meeting and stated that majority of the Indians within the community did not feel the way Samrem and Singh did.

HE South African Minority Rights Equality Movement’s (Samrem) call for a public debate/meeting regarding “African racism”last Wednesday turned into complete chaos with numerous people being turned away while others openly left before the meeting was over.

Attracting over 100 people, the meeting was called to address matters that they felt were being discriminatory against Indians, Coloureds and White people by the Black ANC government.

Samrem’s convener and a senior magistrate in the city, Ashin Singh, caused much controversy from the beginning, kicking out a policeman which he believed was there to spy on him amid criticism from certain crowd members.

ANC Msunduzi councillor Mehmood Oumar was also kicked out because he argued against the removal of the policeman.

Singh told the public that Samrem and himself believed that black Africans were more racist than Afrikaners, saying that the Indian, Coloured and White community was being oppressed by a racist ANC government.

LAW CORNER Private schools and the nonpayment of school fees IN December 2018, the Durban High Court considered private schools and the non-payment of school fees in respect of the child.

The father defaulted and the school threatened its exclusion policy for non-payment.

When further accounts were sent, the mother indicated that they were undergoing financial difficulties and requested an indulgence of three months to allow them to bring the arrear amounts up to date.

The school indicated that its policies did not permit negotiated repayment terms and that should the parents fail to pay, the child would not be allowed to write his examinations and ultimately will be deregistered from the school.

The child was kept in the art room while his classmates were writing examinations.

This, according to the parents, affected the child’s psychological well-being and destroyed his self-esteem.

The court highlighted that the exclusion policy relied on by the school was included in a contract of 2011.

However, there was a contract of 2015 which the parents had signed in respect of 2016 which made no provision for the exclusion of learners for non-payment of fees but availed other remedies to the school.

These remedies could include interest being charged together with late payment administration costs, collection costs and legal costs on attorney and own client scale.

The 2015 contract actually made provision for considering a settlement. The court said that these must precede the suspension or expulsion of a learner.

The court held that it is unnecessary to give independent schools powers which result in the victimisation and humiliation of children by excluding them in ordinary school activities as was the case in this matter.

The purpose of section 28(2) of the Constitution was not to impose on a private school the duties of the State, but rather require private schools not to diminish the enjoyment of a right, being the right to a basic education.

Independent schools must act in a manner that minimises the negative impact of their actions on the ability of learners to attend school and the learner’s circumstances must be considered.

Private schools must always bear in mind the role they play in society taking into account that it is dealing with children who are specifically protected by the Constitution and whose rights are paramount.

ITH transformation and rural development in agriculture in KwaZulu­-Natal being a key component of Kwanalu’s objectives for 2019, the Advisory Council of the Union recently met with all heads of commodity groups and agri-businesses to collaborate and together drive meaningful change in the sector.

Kwanalu’s Advisory Council, consisting of farmers from each district, commodity and agribusiness affiliates of Kwanalu, sat for a first sitting of 2019 on February 28 in Pietermaritzburg.

As part of Kwanalu’s mandate to foster transformation and unity in the province, a strategic session consisting of presentations by commodity and agri-business leaders was held where the Advisory Council heard presentations from each commodity and agri-business on their aims, objectives, future plans and interventions undertaken to foster transformation and rural development in KZN in their specific sector.

‘I want to impact, motivate and inspire the youth’ BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com WHEN one door closes, another opens, these are the words that Reanne David has lived by and words that have helped mould her into an upand-coming disk jockey (DJ) sensation who has played across multiple venues in South Africa and alongside many talented veterans of the music industry.

Going by the name, “DJ Rea”, 19-year-old David has played in Johannesburg, Durban and Pieter­maritzburg, to name a few, while meeting household names such as DJ Dino Bravo, Deon Govender (ECR), Warrick Frank (ECR), Neil Green (ECR), Ryan The Deejay (5FM), Ameeth Shah (Red Bull 3 Style 2018 SA champion) and many more.

After not getting into the course that she originally wanted to study, it was a chance encounter with another DJ which set her on her current musical path and gave her a chance to play her first DJ set at a local club.

“A DJ by the name of Azhruddin Mahomed (DJ Zazoo) got into contact with me and offered to teach me more about deejaying at a local club in PMB called FBI Urban Lifestyle (behind Sticky Fingers). He was the only DJ that took the time to teach me,” said David.

David said that was tough to get into the industry at first because she barely got paid for any of her gigs but that did not stop her because she loved what she was doing and had a passion for it, so she worked hard to better herself through the exposure.

Now currently studying towards her Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication at Varsity College (PMB), David says that she one day hopes to be on the radio.

Arts festival looking for vendors A

RTISTS and crafters interested in exhibiting at the region’s foremost arts festival are invited to apply to the 2019 Hilton Arts Festival.

Applications are now open for interested art exhibitors and craft stall holders, as well as vendors offering fresh and unusual food options.

With a riveting programme of art already secured, potential exhibitors wanting to be a part of this year’s festival have from March 1 until the end of April to get their applications in. Successful artists, crafters and food vendors will be notified by the end of May. In a quest to continually make the festival contemporary, relevant and interesting, spaces for art exhibitions will be a slightly reconfigured from previous years. Artist applicants are welcome to suggest where they would like to exhibit (subject to availability and selection committee choices).

The venues on offer are the Bell Tower and Churchill Tents; Memorial Hall foyer, five walls within the Grindrod Bank Theatre foyer; and in the Raymond Slater Library. The Normand Dunn Gallery is by invitation only and is already allocated.

The craft market will also be slightly different this year — the intention is to bring it back to its original brief, and consider first and foremost quality handcrafted, bespoke, unusual and vintage goods of interest.

Complementing this will be artisanal food stuffs such as preserves, pick-

les, breads and cheeses; and plants and flowers. In response to the new parameters, the number of stalls will decrease slightly and the layout will be completely refreshed.

The Wild Garden Tent will be for crafters and food outlets only, with a satellite bar. There will be a family-friendly area with jumping castles and kiddies entertainment alongside the craft area.

First-time crafters who haven’t exhibited before are especially welcome to apply.

The festival committee is also looking for food traders offering innovative and unusual food — ideally fresh and locally sourced. Priority will also be given to vegetarian, vegan and healthy options.

The festival once more celebrates the best of South Africa’s magnificent art, theatre, music and the live experience. This year promises to be no different, with an exciting line up of some of the country’s most sought-after art exhibitions complementing a myriad productions and shows.

Festival dates are September 13-15.

Joe Marais’ nature-inspired works on exhibition BUTTERFLIES for Africa’s Blue Caterpillar Gallery in Willowton Road, Pietermaritzburg, currently has an exhibition of beautiful pieces

Although he has had no formal art training, Marais’ natural talent and love for drawing led him to start sketching and painting.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the African landscape and wildlife, his creative abilities grew and he gradually developed his own Sunflower Fields by Joe Marais.

for many years and has done art demonstrations for various art societies.

He equates the painting of a canvas to a stage performance, where the success of the show is measured by the response of the audience. This inspires and motivates him.

O celebrate the completion of its new theatre centre, St Anne’s Diocesan College in Hilton is staging This Is Me — A Tribute to Musicals, at 7.30 pm from March 25 to March 28.

The song and dance numbers have been chosen specifically to expose the school’s talented singers, as well as for their musicality, theatricality and timeless relevance to making brave, individual choices in the face of conformity.

“We have also chosen a few unusual songs that do not generally make the cut in musical reviews, but thoroughly deserve the limelight,” said artistic director Lynn Chemaly.

The songs have been taken from both theatre and film and include numbers from The Greatest Showman, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Sarafina, Sister Act, Mulan, Anastasia, West Side Story, Victor Victoria, The King & I, Moulin Rouge and Wicked.

The cast includes 70 pupils from St Anne’s — 28 singers and 42 dancers — who are rehearsing tirelessly to create the musical spectacular.

The production team is led by Chemaly, choreographer Tegan Peacock, voice training specialists Elsa and Riaan Oosthuizen, and technical director Marcus Henning.

The girls will be accompanied by Anthea Hibbert, Andri Potgieter and Rudi Engelbrecht.

“We’ve stripped it and redone the acoustics, put in new technology, new seating and curtains and added a movement studio with a sprung floor and a drama classroom with a practical studio.

“There’s also a new foyer area, kitchen and ablutions.”

Chemaly said the 300-seat auditorium is the ideal space and size for their educational theatri-

cal requirements.

Of the new movement studio, she said dance theatre is a strong component of their teaching and training in drama.

“We have two dance theatre companies running in the school,” Chemaly added.

“These new facilities have been attached and redistributed within the old, now enabling a separate drama classroom with its own practical studio, a dedicated green room, rack room and backstage dressing rooms, all of which have been upgraded.”

She said the theatre is connected on the same level as the drama studio and the movement studio, enabling the whole complex to open up into one big space for backstage use and/or alternative use in teaching and performance.

The renovations and building started in June 2018 and the front side of the complex, including the theatre, allied foyer, ablutions, green room and backstage, will be completed by March 25.

The back of the complex, including the drama classroom and studio, movement studio, D&T classroom and social responsibility office, roadway and the gardens, should be completed by the end of May. Chemaly said much research, planning and thought went into the project from all the various role players, both structurally and educationally.

“The architect, Nick Grice, has ensured that the overall look and architectural style of the ‘red brick and white trim’ has been maintained through the modern structures, and connects with the existing chapel and original main school building that forms the impressive school frontage,” she added.

hile maintaining a healthy diet is recommended at all stages of life, good nutrition is of particular importance while pregnant.

During pregnancy, a woman’s macronutrient (energy) and micronutrient (vitamins and mineral) requirements increase and adequate amounts of both are needed to maintain her and her developing baby’s health.

BOUT 40 children gathered excitedly in the school courtyard to apprehensively watch the headmaster, Mr Swart, having his head shaved by the matric class. The expressions on the faces of many pupils was either dismay or panic. The CANSA fundraising committee at school challenged the headmaster to shave his head, if parents and pupils raised over R6 000 for CANSA. One of the values at Wembley is leadership with enthusiasm. Mr Swart is certainly living this value through his leadership style. He enthusiastically entered into having his head shaved to raise money for an invaluable cause.

Cancer is close to all our hearts with few people not being affected by it in some way.

The school managed to raise R6 400 and over R4 000 at the Mascor CANSA drive hosted by the Form 5 Wembley pupils with the help of Rudolf Scharneck and the NG Church. The total amount of money raised for cancer was R10 400.

Michaelhouse firsts triumph against St Charles in rugby MURRAY WITHERSPOON

T Charles College played host to Michaelhouse and Clifton College on a blisteringly hot day to kick off the winter sports programme for all three schools on Saturday.

The hosts enjoyed a slight advantage in the 10 hockey fixtures that were contested, with the grandstand event of the day ending in a 1-1 draw between the two second teams.

Seventeen Michaelhouse rugby teams met with opposition from St Charles and Clifton Colleges, most of which were staggered fixtures proving a bridge too far for many of the lower Michaelhouse teams on their first weekend of full contact rugby.

In the open age groups, only the seventh and fifth XV results suggested serious mismatches with both sides going down heavily to St Charles fourth and third XVs respectively.

Michaelhouse’s sixths held their own in a thrilling 31-31 clash with Clifton’s third XV, while the fourths were able to dominate Clifton’s seconds in their comfortable 36-10 win. Michaelhouse’s thirds edged to the narrowest of wins, 15-14, over St Charles’ second

team, while Clifton’s first XV hung on to their 26-24 win over Michaelhouse’s second XV. St Charles would have been keen to record their first win over the Boys from Balgowan since 1960.

2018 Academy Week centre, Thami Zakwe, broke the early deadlock as he crashed over for an unconverted try. St Charles struck back with some direct play, exploiting a chink in Michaelhouse’s defence to take the lead for the only time on the day. Pre-season conditioning again paid dividends as the visitors were able to cross the line two more times during the first half with unconverted tries by Mark Grant and No. 10 Luc Pousson.

Flyhalf Pousson confirmed his man- of-the-match performance when he soaked up pressure from a scrum under his own poles to cut the advantage line and put Grant away for his second try on debut.

Hooker Jamie Deeble’s try from a driving lineout closed Michaelhouse’s account for a comfortable, if not yet confident, 27-7 win.

‘Bulwer Bomber’ happy with second place NONDUMISO ZAKWE THREE-TIME Comrades Marathon champion Bongmusa Mthembu confirmed his place for the 2019 edition of the race in June by successfully tackling the Deloitte Challenge Marathon in Durban on Sunday.

The “Bulwer Bomber” came second in a time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 29 seconds, with Siyabonga Nkonde taking first place in 2:21:07 and third spot going to Thulani Mdletshe in 2:27:09.

Said Mthembu: “I had so much fun at the Deloitte Challenge. The supporters’ love warmed my heart, as usual. I’m happy with second place. Congratulations to Siyabonga Nkonde for taking first place.

In the women’s race of the Deloitte Challenge, Janie Grundling took first position by clocking 3:00:07, followed by Simone Verster in 3:12:27 and Candice Jenkinson in 3:12:54.

The Comrades’ oldest finisher last year, Alf Burgess, won the men’s 70-plus category, but failed to qualify for the Comrades Marathon because he finished 10 minutes outside the qualifying time when he clocked 5:00:08.

The 42,2 km event, hosted by Dolphin Coast Striders, was run from Ballito to the Durban beachfront. One of its key organisers is former Comrades Marathon Association chairperson and runner Barry Varty.

The 94th edition of the “Ultimate Human Race” on June 9 will be the 48th Up Run in Comrades history.

I believe that sport can make a significant difference in lifestyle and behaviour change and provide both hope and purpose to the children of South Africa,” he said.

The Let’s Play Star of the Month competition, partnering with The Witness newspaper, is one of Let’s

Play projects which aims to celebrate and encourage sport achievement amongst young children in our communities.

The Star of the Month must be between the ages of seven to 18 years old, must excel in sport in his/her school, community, nationally or internationally.

HE St Charles College First XI spent the weekend in Pretoria, representing the Dolphins franchise in the Cricket South Africa National Schools T20 competition.

The team started strongly by beating St Andrews College from Grahamstown on Friday and followed it up with an excellent performance against Hoërskool Waterkloof.

On Saturday morning, the Saints came up against Queens and posted a massive 205/3, winning the encounter with a bonus point. On Saturday afternoon, against Paarl Gimnasium, a remarkable game of school T20 cricket took place. The Saints batted first, scoring 135. The Cobras representatives chased and were controlling the game, requiring 39 runs off seven overs with eight wickets in hand when the Saints off-spinners entered the bowling attack.

The crucial cross-pool match seesawed and eventually Gimmies needed two off two balls with five wickets in hand. Saints opening bowler, Keegan Crawford, held his nerve and the game resulted in a tie; a Super Over ensued.

Paarl batted first and scored 17/1, smashing the last two balls for six. Saints sent in Madande and Madhevere, the latter hitting three consecutive boundaries and giving the Saints some hope. Off the last ball, St Charles College required three to win, the batsmen ran two and got run out by a whisker on the third. A tied Super Over!

The tournament rules dictated that in the event of a Super Over tie, the team who hit the most boundaries would be declared the winner, thus St Charles College won 16-14 on boundaries and booked their place in the final.

Spare a thought for Paarl Gim, a school with a very proud history, who also lost on the last ball of a Super Over against St Stithians the day before.

It was an All-Saints final on Sunday, St Charles College representing the Dolphins vs St Stithians College representing the Lions franchise. The Saints from Maritzburg, after losing the toss and being asked to bowl, got off to the perfect start with two electric, full length diving catches in the first six overs. St Stithians kept grinding and managed to get to 123 in their allotted overs. St Charles College would have been pleased at the change of innings but for the first time this summer their batting let them down and they were all out for 70. Credit must go to the St Stithians bowlers who were superb on the day, Man of the Match Liam McCarthy getting 4/14 to help his school lift the National trophy for the fourth time.

That brings the curtain down on a historic summer of cricket for St Charles College, not the fairy-tale ending, but congratulations to a team who won 21 consecutive matches and made it through to the schools National T20 Final.
