A

PASSION for the scary side of life stemming from R.L. Stein’s famousGoosebumps series, paved the way for Pietermaritzburg’s very own Kaveel Lilmohun’s quest to bring his imagination to life through book writing.

Having begun writing his own material since his days of speech and drama, where he would create his own plays instead of use one that was already in existence, Lilmohun has now written six books and will be finished his seventh by the end of the year.

Set in a smallish town much like Pietermaritzburg, Sinister Spells follows the life of Sirara who is dealing with the death of her boyfriend and a magical book that can only be used for evil.

The book is the first in a series of books written

by Lilmohun and is his first book to be published under Lotus Publishers from Durban.

“It was not easy to find a publisher but by chance I met the publisher at a flea market in Chatsworth while looking for clothing to celebrate Diwali,”said Lilmohun.

A big fan of the horror and suspense genre, Lilmohun said that his book ends somewhat tragically in order to provide a cliff hanger to give rise to a possible part two.

“I always knew what I liked but I never thought that I could make a career out of this at school. Now I have a book that is published and am writing my seventh book,” said Lilmohun. Lilmohun hopes to release his book sometime in April and those looking to get their hands on a copy can contact him and be first in line at 083 629 5377 or 082 372 8905.

OVER the past four months, five cases of rabies in humans have been reported in South Africa, with an additional two cases being probable.

Since then, the country’s National Institute of Communicable Diseases has warned that steps need to be taken as soon as possible in order to curb this alarming trend.

Daniel Stewart, a global specialist in consulting and training in animal handling and disease control, who has dedicated himself to tackling rabies worldwide, said that this disease is typically associated with dogs and that because of this, preventative measures can be taken.

“All dogs must receive their rabies vaccination within 12 to 24 weeks of age to prevent them from getting rabies and then dog

owners must follow up these vaccinations when the dog has reached 12-16 months,” said Stewart.

He said that should you get bitten by a dog, some of the following methods listed below are recommended.

• Do not pull away from a dog; stand and hold still.

• If you fall, roll into a ball and tuck in your arms and legs and cover your head.

• Dog bites should be taken seriously! Wash the wounds immediately with soap under running water for 15 minutes and go to your nearest clinic, or tell a responsible adult so that they can take you to the clinic straight away.

• Rabies is a fatal disease that can be prevented but not treated. Bites, especially from unknown dogs or dogs behaving aggressively or abnormally, should be treated as soon as possible at your nearest clinic.

Competition commission inquires into data costs OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com THE National Competitions Commission (NCC) has joined the data must fall bandwagon and will be conducting a market inquiry into data cost, says commissioner Ebrahim Mohamed.

Also, Icasa has recently published regulations to improve benefits of consumers of voice and data services.

Mohamed said the NCC would be joining in soon.

“In its deliberations with Icasa on the issue, the NCC was vehemently opposed to consumers not receiving value for money insofar as the amount of data they actually paid for.

“The NCC is opposed to, and will continue to oppose, the practice of forfeiting unused data, which is to the detriment of consumers and only benefits network op-

erators,” said Mohamed. He said while price-fixing impacted the consumer badly, it was also worthy to note that “significant fines” on companies were likely to be passed onto consumers.

“I am certain that authorities all over the world are grappling this issue. I can only urge our competition authorities to be more creative with their penalties and to take into account the issue of double jeopardy for consumers,” said Mohamed.

The seminar was held on World Consumer Rights Day and during his address, the commissioner noted the correlation of both World Consumer Rights Day and Human Rights Day. He said it was due to the activism of the slain heroes at the Sharpeville massacre that human rights (including consumer rights) have become realised in present day.

“The role of regulating competition in South Africa is crucial to advancing economic inclusivity.

“We all know that we come from a past in which the bulk of our people were excluded from the mainstream economy.

“Competition law must continue to play a role in protecting vulnerable and innocent consumers,” said Mohamed.

IARA Singh is pushing on in memory of her late father after being selected as the only candidate from Pietermaritzburg and one of 15 in the country for the Miss SA Schools Ambassador competition.

A Grade 12 pupil from Raisethorpe Secondary School, Kiara originally entered the competition as a joint project with her father who died last year, leaving the project as a distant memory in her mind until she was informed by her school that she had been selected as a finalist for the competition.

“It came as a huge shock for me when the school informed me that I had been chosen. My entry was actually put through on my dad’s name so that was quite emotional for me,”

said Kiara.

The competition serves as a way to get female pupils involved in their community and to serve as ambassadors for their schools.

Finalists are required to represent their schools as well as give back and get involved in community work.

Kiara has embarked on her own charitable campaign titled “Girls in Heels”, which serves to bring attention to diabetes, cardiac awareness and pulmonary fibrosis, all of which her dad suffered from.

With the motto of the competition being: “Be the change you want to see in the world”, Kiara has since started a toy drive, collecting toys for the underprivileged and distributing them through Rivlife Church. She will also be setting up a cake sale, with all funds collected going towards a charity close to her heart. The finals for

the Miss SA Schools Ambassador will be held in Pretoria, with first leg starting at Gold Reef City on May 25, and ending at the Sheraton Hotel on May 26. Those looking to offer their support for Kiara can go to the Miss SA Schools Ambassador’s Facebook page and like and share her picture or visit her profile and do the same.

Kiara’s form teacher, D. Gobind, said that she and the school are extremely proud of her. Gobind said: “I share a close bond with her given that I have been teaching her since Grade 8, and I hope she takes her passion for giving further with the help of this competition.”

Kiara said: “If I win I would like to take it further and be involved in charity projects across South Africa. I am competing in memory of my father, who taught me how to give with purpose and not just with prayer.”

KZN Midlands Youth Choir scoops silver in Wales ESTELLE SINKINS THE KZN Midlands Youth Choir is returning home with a category win and three silver medals from the International Choir Festival in Wales.

The young singers reached the final round of the contest and achieved scores of 80% to 89% in the young voices, mixed choir and open categories of the choral competition held in Cardiff on March 31.

The choir was invited to take part in the festival by organiser Eilir Owen Griffiths, following their successful performance at the Llangollen Eisteddfod in Wales last year.

Proud parents watched the performances live, via Facebook.

During the tour, the choristers also gave impromptu performances at various spots around the Welsh capital.

Sharing the music of Africa, they improvised the sounds of rain, wild dogs and even hadedas for crowds of onlookers.

Choir director and conductor William Silk said: “The International Choral Festival in Wales has been an amazing experience; from fringe concerts in and around the wonderful city of Cardiff, to the competition itself,

and workshops with Paul Mealor, the Royal composer, who was intrigued by our choir.

“Getting a category win in the open category and three silvers and being invited to compete in the Choir of Choirs finals was an exhilarating experience,” said Silk.

“In true SA fashion, our wonderful choristers have brought life to the festival and added a spirit that will be hard to replicate in future festivals.

“I am very, very proud of our KZN Midlands Youth Choir,” he said.

The competition was part of a 10-day tour of England and Wales, during which they visited Nelson Mandela’s statue in London, the ancient Roman baths in Bath and the historic site of the Stonehenge.

Their final stop before returning home on April 5, will be a visit to the Harry Potter Museum in Oxfordshire.

HETHER it’s day or night, the sex industry never sleeps, and according to some business owners on Boom Street, prostitutes have settled right next to their businesses, creating all types of problems for the businesses.

Many business owners spoke to the Maritzburg Fever and asked to remain anonymous in fear of victimisa-

tion from the prostitutes and their bosses.

“At first I noticed it was one woman and then all of a sudden there were more,” said one business owner.

He said the women ply their trade right in front of his business at all times of the day.

Business owners are concerned about who the prostitutes attract, claiming that there are now also looters and drug dealers who frequent the area.

“With the presence of prostitutes, we now have vagrants who are making this street their own.

“They go through the rubbish we leave outside for the bin trucks and make a mess.

“And drug dealers have also started to show up here,” said one man who said this is bad for business.

Another businessperson said that some of his clients have said that they were approached by prostitutes while making their way to the business

premises.

“Some of my customers said that these prostitutes make suggestive vulgar signs at them before they arrive at my building,” said the man.

According to these business owners, many flashy cars frequent the area picking up the women to engage in sexual intercourse, and once done they discard their used condoms on the side of the road.

Some claimed that the women use their premises as ablution facilities.

“We arrive here sometimes and we see human waste at our gates or are greeted with the smell of urine on our gates,” said the visibly irked business owner.

A spokesperson for the Pietermaritzburg Central Police said that they are aware of the growing problem and are dealing with prostitution in Pietermaritzburg.

Should anyone be experiencing problems with prostitution in their area that they should report it to their local police station as soon as they see it.

‘Sentencing won’t bring back my children’ BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com FIVE long years of seeking justice for the death of their son and daughterin-law after a fatal accident in December 2012, Peter and Soundthie Pillay finally never have to go to court again after Thamendran Pillay was sentenced to seven years behind bars for their deaths last Monday.

This comes after Pillay was found guilty in the regional court by Magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa of culpable homicide in the case of the death of the couple after concluding that Pillay had been driving drunk and without a licence at the time of the accident.

“Pillay was driving at full speed, his vehicle moving towards traffic as if he was on a racing track. His moth-

er told him not to drive drunk but he did not heed her advice. He disrespected her,” said Phoswa.

Phoswa stressed that Pillay did not own up to the accident and in other words is saying that he is not responsible for the collision.

“He is saying the court is wrong to have found him guilty. I hold a different view and the court convicted him,” said Phoswa.

He added that they have been praying for him and hope that he can find some kind of repentance during his time in jail. “We have released and forgiven him and we hope that he can beg for forgiveness from God as well. We hope that his time in jail will be a life-changing and reflective one,” said Peter.

“We have pain in our hearts and it won’t go away,” said Soundthie.

Millions of rands ‘wasted’ on sanitary towels NOKUTHULA KHANYILE THE KZN Education Department says it will investigate allegations that millions of rands are being wasted on sanitary towels at well-off schools.

The National Teachers’ Union (Natu) in the province had called on Education Minister Angie Motshekga to probe the alleged misuse of funds.

She is expected to meet Natu leadership soon.

Reports suggest that over 30 schools in KZN were flooded with hundreds of thousands of sanitary towels that are not needed.

Addressing media in Durban, KZN Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane said: “All concerns we are picking up will be subject to thorough investigation, including the allegations relating to an oversupply.”

The programme, with 900 000 beneficiaries at schools in quintile one to four and special schools in the province, had a

budget of R109 million in the 2017/ 2018 financial year ending on April 1.

Dlungwane said the distribution of sanitary towels was initiated for pupils from poor backgrounds.

“There are allegations that well-off schools have also been receiving the supply where parents can afford to pay school fees.

This programme is not designed for those schools and we can’t be providing for them. We are targeting schools in Umsinga and Manguze that have a serious need for this programme.”

Nzama said he did not know the company appointed by the national department for the tender.

He said the tender for the sanitary towels was a national open tender for all provinces to use.

“We did not advertise and there was no obligation for us to advertise because it was an open tender managed by our national government,” he said.

3 AM call-out to investigate suspicious behaviour resulted in up to R70 000 worth of goods being recovered in the Manor area last Friday.

Walungisa Protection Services (WPS) owner Imraan Osman responded quickly to a call reporting suspicious activity regarding a bakkie at the local Manor grounds and upon approach, noticed that a white Toyota Hilux bakkie was being loaded with multiple brown boxes.

“We immediately thought this was suspicious given the time and location.

“As we were patrolling, Detective Constable Ashen Govender approached us as he was also patrolling the area,” said Osman.

Informing Govender of what he had seen, Osman said that once they noticed that the driver of the vehicle was attempting to drive off, they proceeded towards it, which then alarmed the two men inside the bakkie.

“When we got to the vehicle we noticed the two men were trying to pick up items from one of the boxes which had fallen and

broken open when they tried to flee,” said Osman.

Quick thinking by the police and WPS made it possible for them to grab both men in their attempt to evade the scene, resulting in the discovery of 48 Blue Seal Vaseline boxes.

“When we questioned the man he said that he had purchased the stock from a friend but upon further questioning he revealed that he purchased the items off a truck,” said Osman.

A K-9 unit arrived shortly afterwards and assisted in the arrest of the two men, of which one was identified as a foreign national who is a local shop owner.

The company assumed to own the goods was then contacted and it provided legal proof that it owns the goods, proving that the goods were stolen, which led to the arrest of the two men.

Pietermaritzburg Central police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi confirmed the arrests and hailed the efforts of the police and WPS members who were pivotal to the arrests.

The two men will appear in court soon.

PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com HUSKY Rescue KwaZulu-Natal, a group of passionate individuals rescuing huskies, will be hosting a fundraising concert on April 29 at the Shongweni Club Barn with a performance by The Black Lapels.

Speaking to the Fever, volunteer for the organisation Ann du Plessis said they don’t deal only with abandoned huskies. “We take in sick huskies, ill-treated huskies, victims of illegal dog-fighting and victims of dog-racing syndicates,” said Du Plessis.

She said in 2017, Husky Rescue KZN took in 35 dogs, which had 26 successful adoptions.

“Nineteen dogs were sterilised and 25 were microchipped. All of these procedures cost a fortune. It’s only been three months into 2018 and we have taken in 19 dogs already and have 10 on a waiting list,” said Du Plessis.

Du Plessis said 17 of these dogs require sterilisation and micro-chipping, and even at rescue rates the price is approximately R14 000.

“The costs of doing this are very high and this does not include the cost of food, vaccination, deworming,

and tick and flea treatments. In addition, there are the vets’ costs for treating illnesses, injuries and the issuing of chronic medication, which mean our resources are currently stretched beyond our limits,” she said.

“We are in a position where we will soon have no choice but to start turning away any new huskies requiring help.

“This is why we are in desperate need of additional funding and are appealing to all our supporters for any donation, no matter how small, so that we can continue helping huskies in need,” said Du Plessis.

She said that the concert is one of the ways they are raising funds for the organisation.

“We will also be hosting a Dog Walk in the Park on April 14 at the Giba Gorge MTB Park and I am urging people to attend.

“We also have various ways in which people can help or they can sign up for a debit order for a monthly donation.”

Hospital creates TB awareness I

N an attempt to educate members of the public about tuberculosis on World TB Day on March 24, Netcare St Anne’s Hospital held an information stand to broaden people’s knowledge about what TB is, resistance and prevention.

Leading physician Dr Devan Gounder gave a talk to staff about TB and the treatment plan.

WHAT IS TB? Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by germs that are spread person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys or the spine. In most cases, TB can be treated but people with TB can die if they don’t get the proper treatment.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET TB? People who have a weak immune system from causes such as malnutrition, alcoholism, HIV, diabetes, physical and emotional stress, and cancer treatment, can get TB. Poverty and living in overcrowded places also make people vulnerable to getting TB. HOW IT IS SPREAD ?

When a person with TB talks,coughs, spits or sneezes, the germ is spread through the air and other people can breathe the germs in.

Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

HOW CAN PEOPLE TELL THEY HAVE TB? The early signs of TB of the lungs include: • a cough lasting more than two weeks; • weight loss; • tiredness; and • loss of appetite.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO IF THEY THINK THEY HAVE TB? If anyone has the early signs of TB they must go to the nearest hospital or clinic for testing.

CAN TB BE CURED? Yes, TB can be cured, provided you complete your treatment. There is strong and effective medication to treat and cure TB. TB is curable even when a person is HIV-positive.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO FIGHT TB? Following a healthy lifestyle makes the body stronger so that it can fight the TB germs better.

THE Grade 11 consumer studies pupils at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School recently held their annual Sweet Extravaganza. Their task was to bake decedent goods that tested their skills using sugar. From brownies to fudge to caramel popcorn and a combination of all things delicious, the event was a huge success and all stalls sold out before the end of break.

TRIP of a lifetime for gifted local soccer players Kwazi Dlamini and Thempeli Ngocobo to Spain’s football capitals Madrid and Barcelona, will be more business than pleasure this holiday.

Selected for the U19 Invitational PMB High Schools Soccer Team that will travel to Madrid and Barcelona to compete in a soccer tournament, the two plan on making good on their visit to Spain.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, Dlamini and Ngocobo said they are very excited to see the two sides play, especially since Ngocobo is a Barcelona fan, but they stressed that the main focus of the trip is to play hard and focus on getting scouted.

“My main focus is to play my best and hopefully catch the attention of the scouts, but otherwise I am thrilled to be going there as I am a huge Barcelona supporter. We’ll be going to Barcelona’s stadium, the Camp Nou, to watch them play,” said Ngocobo.

Dlamini spoke of how it is a dream come true, all stemming from their participation in the FA Cup Schools tournament in Howick last year, where they were scouted. He said it is his dream to play professionally and one day represent his country.

“Soccer is the most important thing in my life and I really love playing. I look forward to learning the type of soccer that they play and about seeing the two stunning stadiums owned by the two

Ngocobo added that funding for the trip has been a huge issue of concern given that no organisations that they approached agreed to offer any sort of sponsorship.

“The costs for the trip have been covered entirely by our parents and we aim to make it worth it,” said Ngocobo.

“We are very proud of Kwazi and

Thempeli and their success outside of school. We wish them the very best on their trip and hope they return speaking fluent Spanish! The school stands behind you and supports your achievement.

A GRIPPING final ending in a 4-2 penalty win for Copesville Unique over Hillview Old Boys FC summed up a perfect weekend for lovers of the game who came out each day to show their support for local talent at the Hillview grounds in Raisethorpe.

Beginning on Easter Friday, the Hillview Easter Tournament sponsored by Hugo’s Panel Beaters,included 13 teams altogether of which three competed in the over 35 division and 10 teams competed in the open division, which consisted of two groups of five teams each.

It was Copesville Unique who walked away with all the spoils, winning the annual curtain raiser called “The Grand Challenge” on Friday, and the Easter tournament final on Monday, winning a

grand total of R7 000 altogether.

Tournament director Raj Parus said that this year’s Easter tournament was a huge success and he thanked everyone for their support.

“We are very thankful to everyone who came out and supported us even through the bad weather that we experienced. It did not deter the people’s love for the game,” said Parus.

Parus said that they are hoping to exceed expectations and have an even bigger tournament next year and that he is sure they are on course to achieve this given the success of this year’s event.
