The idea of the initiative was to celebrate Madiba and the legacy that he left for the youth, he said.

“Many female pupils often miss school during their menstrual cycle. We at the KwaDukuza Mall understand the importance of attending school, especially for a girl child, as this ensures a better tomorrow; therefore, we opted to distribute sanitary pads to help assist the situation,” he said.

More than 300 female pupils from the school were given sanitary pads.

HE Stanger Weekly joined KwaDukuza Mall in a drive to empower the girl child, sharing their 67 minutes of Mandela Day with local pupils on Thursday, July 18.

KwaDukuza Mall partnered with Stanger Weekly and a few of their tenants to visit ML Sultan Secondary School, a school which neighbours the mall, in order to empower the girl children with a donation of sanitary pads.

KwaDukuza Mall Centre Manager Raveshin Veerasamy, said: “To commemorate Mandela Day, we sponsored 528 packs of sanitary pads with the Stanger Weekly and tenants such as Edgar’s, PEP Cell, Capital Fashion and Telkom adding an additional 200 towards the initiative.”

ANDENI Local Municipality joined forces with the Department of Human Settlement and Public Works, led by MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, for a fruitful International Nelson Mandela Day commemoration programme on Thursday.

The day’s proceedings kicked-off with an unannounced visit to Sundumbili Clinic and Mandeni South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) offices where officials handed gifts to patrons and interacted with the people.

Help prevent rabies — vaccinate your pets JYOTHI LALDAS SABLES Creatures, a pro-life animal rescue, will be offering free rabies vaccinations to the pet owners of KwaDukuza on Saturday, July 27 at the Glenhills Mini Supermarket at 10 Palm Haven Drive, Glen­hills, from 10 am.

The community is urged to take advantage of this free service in an effort to ensure rabies is kept at bay in the area.

According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 60 000 people die from rabies around the world in a year and the cause is usually a bite from a rabid dog.The majority of these deaths are recorded in Africa and Asia.

WHAT CAUSES RABIES? The disease is caused by a virus, a bullet-shaped microscopic infectious agent that contains genetic material.

In the case of rabies, that material is RNA, not DNA. Any rabies virus, and there are several variants, can cause the disease in any mammal. Common variants of the disease can establish themselves permanently in populations of dogs, bats, raccoons, and other animals.

HOW DOES IT KILL? The virus is usually transmitted by the saliva of an infected animal through a bite. It then travels only through nerve tissue to the brain and to salivary glands. Once it arrives at the brain it can cause convulsions, avoidance of water, excessive salivation and other symptoms. Eventually the brain infection causes coma and death.

IS RABIES INFECTION A DEATH SENTENCE­?

HE DRIVER of a sugarcane truck was killed in an accident on the infamous Temple Bend on the R74 Manor Highway in the early hours of last Wednesday morning, July 17.

IPSS Medical Rescue responded to the accident which saw the driver of a truck allegedly lose control of his vehicle and veer off the road and down an embankment.

According to IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst, upon arrival of IPSS paramedics it was established that the driver was severely entrapped within the wreckage.

Rabies statistics in South Africa.

No. Rabies in humans is considered completely preventable if the vaccine is administered after a bite but before symptoms appear. The vaccine can be administered protectively, for people who are handling animals where rabies is common, for example. But, a series of shots after a bite will also stop the virus in its tracks.

WHY VACCINATE DOGS INSTEAD OF PEOPLE? Vaccination of humans after a bite is necessary if possible, but expensive and puts a drain on medical resources.

The preventive vaccination of large populations of people is not feasible in terms of expense, discomfort, logistics and the small risk associated with vaccination. But, experts have shown that annual vaccinations of dogs can eliminate canine rabies, thus stopping almost all human rabies cases.

Dog vaccination has eliminated rabies as a major public health problem in numerous countries.

CAN RABIES BE ELIMINATED? The World Health Organisation has set a goal to reach zero human deaths from canine rabies by 2030. That is not the same as, for example, eliminating the smallpox virus, which involved complete eradication.

It would mean eliminating most canine rabies by vaccinating dogs in combination with providing post-bite treatment. That in itself is a huge challenge, but, the rabies virus and lyssaviruses, which are closely related, live in a number of wild animal populations.

There is no plan to attempt eliminating all these viruses.

Skills training aims to uplift struggling SMMEs in KwaDukuza JYOTHI LALDAS

HE KwaDukuza Municipality in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) is currently holding a five-day training session at the KwaDukuza Town Hall supper room.

The session is aimed to equip Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) with skills to formulate business plans that will pitch their businesses well, whether in the quest for business ventures or seeking funding opportunities.

The training session, which began on July 22 and will conclude on July 26, is the fruition of a three-year memoran-

dum of understanding (MoU), signed by the municipality and SEDA, targeting 30 SMMEs. Some of the challenges found with regards to the promotion of entrepreneurship and SMME development in KwaDukuza included lack of business support institutions, such as SEDA, in the local area; insufficient skills by the majority of SMMEs to source funding and also to compile business plans; as well as lack of proper business administration and management skills.

The obligations set out in the MoU commits SEDA to provide non-financial business development support and training needs assessments to the SMMEs.

Acting Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality Dolly Govender welcomed the commencement of this training session, expressing that she is confident in the capacity of SEDA to untie the capacity issues facing SMMEs in KwaDukuza.

“I have learned that SEDA programmes have helped thousands of small business operators, some on the brink of failure. Today these business operators contribute towards some 57% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Maybe some among the 30 beneficiaries participating will also reach this milestone,” said Govender.

The current session has attracted the attendance of seven females, 17 males, and 12 youth.

Vehicle safety tips from KwaDukuza SAPS WEEKLY REPORTER RECENT official SAPS statistics have shown that when it comes to car hijackings Gauteng comes out tops (23 per day), followed by KwaZulu-Natal with seven per day and Western Cape (six per day). This effectively means that 45 cars are hijacked every day in South Africa.

Taking into account that the majority of highjackings take place in home driveways, KwaDukuza SAPS communication department issued vehicle safety tips for the community to help maintain their safety.

SAFETY WHEN TRAVELLING · Ensure your vehicle is in good condition and that you have enough fuel before you depart. · Always lock the door of the vehicle. · Never open your window more than five centimetres. · Be alert at traffic lights and stop streets and be aware of people loitering around your vehicle. · Do not give hitch hikers a lift. · If possible, avoid driving alone. · Park in well-lit areas. · If you are lost, drive to a well populated area and consult with a map. · Never leave your car unattended

while it is switched on.

SAFETY WHEN DRIVING HOME · Vary your route to work and back if possible and avoid stopping at remote areas. · Ensure your drive way is well lit and look around you before you enter your driveway. If you see someone lurking around, call the police. · If you are being followed, don’t pull into your driveway, don’t leave your car, don’t allow the other driver to force you onto the curb — keep driving and drive to the nearest police station.

TIPS TO AVOID THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLES

According to the KwaDukuza SAPS, in winter there is less daylight, and you’re likely to find yourself entering the mall while the sun is still up and leaving after dark, so make sure you park where it is well-lit.

“Park as close to the entrances and exits as you can,” she said, adding: “When you leave your car, make sure the doors are properly locked. Never

just assume that your remote has in fact locked your doors.

“Always try to walk to and from your vehicle with another person. If you are shopping alone, consider walking near other shoppers.”

Regarding exiting the mall, she said: “Don’t talk on your cell phone while walking to your car, attackers are relying on you being distracted and vulnerable. Have your keys ready and make sure no one is lurking around. Before getting in the car, check that no one is hiding in the back seat.

“Be aware of your surroundings. If something doesn’t seem right, or it feels unsafe, trust your gut feeling and ask for help if and when needed.”

KwaDukuza twins take on Idols SA JYOTHI LALDAS

WADUKUZA’S musically gifted twins, Viggy and Virginia Qwabe, wowed Idols SA season 15 judges recently with their duet during the Durban auditions.

The 21-year-old pair from Doringkop, KwaDukuza took the audition round by storm, earning themselves golden tickets.

The talented girls took a risk at their first audition by singing their own composition, a song called Umhlaba.

Radio powerhouse The Bigdawg, aka DJ Fresh, joined judges Randall Abrahams, Somizi Mhlongo and Unathi Msengana at the judge’s table with all of them giving a unanimous “yes” to the powerful duet.

Speaking to the Weekly on Monday, the girls were ecstatic about their golden tickets and were ready to take on theatre week.

“At first we were so scared and nervous but, as we spoke to the judges and started our performance, we found our confidence and rocked it,” said Virginia, who describes herself as the more outgoing, adventurous of the pair.

According to Viggy, they had their hearts in their hands after their performance because the judges played a prank on them.

“When they said yes we were over the moon, we were so excited, then they said to us there was only one ticket and we would have to chose between us who would go through. I said immediately, ‘I would never leave my sister’, and we decided to decline the ticket altogether.

“Then they pulled out a second ticket, revealing that they were just pulling our legs. We were so relieved.”

While the pair was permitted to audition in the first round together, they will now be separated and become each other’s competition.

“I am excited to see how this goes.

We have never gone up against each other before so it will be fun and interesting. We are thrilled to have gotten through and will cherish the experience, whichever way it goes,” said Virginia.

The twins, who are identical, match their outfits, hair, nails and makeup at all times.

“This is our identity, we are these twins, so we do everything the same.

We take turns to decide outfits and everything else. We like mostly the same things, it is how we have always been,” said a more reserved Viggy.

The girls said performing on Idols SA has been a dream of theirs for years.

“We used to play Idols at home. We would make our friends play judges and then we would perform and then take our cardboard ‘golden tickets’ and run off screaming with joy. So this is really a dream come true for us,” said Viggy.

When asked when they discovered they had a talent for music, Virginia said their mother, Miriam, told them they used to cry in harmony when they were babies.

“We started singing in church and then people used to ask us to sing for them at events; eventually we realised this is what we were made to do. We have been singing ever since and we do not plan to stop,” said Virginia, adding that they have yet to settle on a genre of music as they are able to sing almost anything.

Speaking about their support system, the girls said their family and community have been unwavering in their support.

“My dad, Lawrence, wanted us to study but we told him this is what we wanted to do, so he got on board and supports us with the rest of our family, including our siblings. They have

While the dream is a career in the music industry for both Viggy and Virginia, they said they each have back up

plans.

“I would love to be a music teacher, I do not think I could stray far from music,” said Virginia, while Viggy said she would go the business route and pursue human resources as a study path, and eventually have her own business.

The girls thanked all their fans and supporters at home and around KZN for their outpouring of well wishes in person and via social media.

“We are so thankful for our supporters and fans and we hope to make our community proud,” they said.

Lifeguard tower receives a face-lift

PUBLIC private partnership between a Ballito bespoke paint store, the KwaDukuza Municipality, and the Urban Improvement Project (UIP) and other business entities has seen the iconic Willard Beach lifeguard tower get a fresh new coat of paint.

“We approached the UIP to help facilitate the process and a few Ballito business got together to collaborate; including Creative Paintings & Floors (CPF); Snow Cogan, KwaDukuza Municipality, and the Ballito UIP. “It is our way of giving back and it tied in with Paintsmiths’ ‘Save Our

Oceans’ campaign that is running this month,” said Paintsmiths Ballito owner Cliff Kayat.

The authentic paint store, situated in Lozi Park behind the Lifestyle Centre, is part of a national paint brand with a history and a green heart.

“More importantly, we take pride in the fact that our paints are eco-friendly, setting us apart. Every coating in our store is marked to clearly highlight the VOC, or volatile organic compound, contained.” said Mariella Kayat.

Contractors recently co-opted the assistance of CPF, who set to work, working in partnership with Paintsmiths Ballito, to provide all the material, special coatings, priming and man-

power needed to get the job done.

“The weather played ball so we were able to complete this project in just under two weeks,” said CPF owner Donavan Harvey.

“We wanted Ballito to put its best foot forward.

“We hope the campaign will build awareness about caring for our environment and we encourage people to visit our store and sign our pledge as a personal commitment to become more environmentally friendly,” said Kayat.

Ballito UIP precinct manager Thierry Leclezio thanked Paintsmiths Ballito for going the extra mile for their community.

But, eating in a restaurant can slow things down. It may also be easier for children with attention issues since there aren’t distractions like the TV, phone or pets to pull them away from the table.

Plus, eating out can become another family tradition, whether it’s a weekly trip to the pizza parlour or a birthday dinner at a favourite restaurant.

ON’T let those letters fool you. ST Line has little to do with truly exciting performance; it’s basically an appearance pack rather like M Sport on BMWs or AMG packages on Mercedes’.

Briefly, Ford renamed the Titanium spec on Kuga models; coated the honeycomb grille in glossy black; repeated the design on the fog lamp bezels; colour coded skid plates, skirts, mirrors, door handles, roof spoiler and wheel arches, then blackened the diffuser and roof rails. Its standard, 18inch wheels match the grille’s glossy black.

The cabin boasts combination leather and faux suede upholstery with red stitching on seats, steering wheel and gear lever gaiter, black headlining and pillar trims, alloy pedals and scuff plates with ST logos.

Two option packs are available. Driver Assistance at R16 060 provides adaptive cruise control, active parking assistance, blind spot information and lane keeping aid. The R21 400 Styling Pack adds a powered glass sunroof with opaque interior screen, 19-inch wheels and a bigger roof spoiler. Bi-xenon HID headlamps with LED running lights are available for R6 600.

The sporty touch comes from suspension lowered by 10 millimetres, thicker antiroll bars, steering recalibrated for quicker response, stiffer suspension bushes and al-

tered spring and damper rates. Although slightly firmer, the ride was still very acceptable over the ripples and embedded stones along this gravel road we know.

Handling-wise, it hustled quite quickly along our favourite, winding, country byway but it’s still a fairly tall SUV with up to 188 mm of ground clearance; certainly no Focus ST. Both ST Line choices have 2.0-litre engines, petrol or diesel, all-wheel drive and six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Possibly new since you last drove one, ControlTrac ll made way for Intelligent Four-wheel Drive. A computer-controlled clutch replaces the viscous coupling and there’s no longer a mechanical lock.

It functions much as before, driving mainly the front wheels but shifting torque rearward as conditions deteriorate. Provided you keep within ground clearance limits, it will negotiate some pretty hectic goat tracks if you really need to, but the general idea is for improved handling and better traction in slippery conditions.

We last drove a Kuga, a two-litre TDCi Titanium awd, in 2013 and were surprised to find that little has changed. Apart from the dash being updated with a modern touch screen, it looks very familiar with lots of buttons and its van-like gear lever on a tower. Even the wing mirrors sport wide-angle segments like those on Tourneo — not

with the optional sunroof included in the Styling Pack. We experienced zero turbulence from the opened roof at 120 km/h although a soft whistle crept in at around 100.

Our overall feeling on handing it back was that Kuga ST Line with awd and autobox was “Nice, but a bit old-fashioned, practical for family use but we wouldn’t kill for one.”

There’s stacks of head- and kneeroom too, and storage consists of seatback pockets and skinny door bins.

Up front, both seats adjust for height although only the driver’s is electrified. The standard, nine-speaker Sony sound kit still has its CD player so your dad can borrow the car occasionally. Storage includes a deep armrest box, a medium sized cubby, door bins similar to those at the back and dropdown holder for your shades. There remains a fist’s width of air above a tall driver’s head

Celebrating the Luthuli legacy JYOTHI LALDAS

HIEF Albert Luthuli’s legacy was commemorated through the annual Luthuli Legacy celebration on Friday and Saturday.

The Luthuli Legacy celebration was launched in 2017 on the 50th anniversary of the passing of Inkosi Albert John Luthuli after an alleged accident on the railway bridge in Groutville on July 21, 1967.

A fundraising golf day was held at the Umhlali Country Club on July 19, with monies raised set to be used to support Groutville community-

based initiatives, while the Chief Albert Luthuli walk and fun run took place in Groutville the next day.

The walk and fun run endeavours to promote a healthy lifestyle and affords participants the opportunity to experience all the sites Chief Luthuli visited and worked at regularly.

The legacy walk and fun run was organised by the Luthuli Museum in partnership with iLembe District Municipality, Enterprise iLembe, KwaDukuza Local Municipality, and the Department of Sports and Recreation in the district. iLembe District Municipality

Budo students embrace the warrior within at Warrior Race JYOTHI LALDAS

UDO Martial Arts Centre students took on the Warrior Race which was held at Blythedale over the weekend.

According to trainer Master Sabumnim Timur Kurmanov, it was an encouraging venture that enabled adults and children to practice team building and a healthy lifestyle, teaching people to be fit and learn how to support each other.

“This is necessary in order to grow and become stronger mentally and physically,” he said The Budo team completed the “Commando Elite” race — a 10 km event with 22 obstacles.

“During the race we supported each other and this teaches students how to overcome obstacles with the help of their team members and by using their own physical ability to build their character.

“What is more important, we can use this skill in our daily lives and face life’s obstacles and grow in a more friendly environment and community,” said the trainer.
