EPUTY Minister of Water and Sanitation Pamela Tshwete, together with officials from iLembe District and Mandeni Municipality, conducted a site visit at the newly built Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme (LTBWSS) in Mandeni on Thursday, January 10.

The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the progress that has been made since the launch of the project in August 2017 by Umgeni Water and how far it has gone in delivering on its purpose.

In welcoming guests, Mandeni­Mayor Sphesihle Zulu said they are honoured to house such a project which has brought relief to the people of Mandeni and surrounds.

“Not only has this project improved water supply but it has also created plenty work opportunities and we hope that the department will soon give a go ahead for the second phase of the project to commence and ensure that people receive sustainable drinking water,” said Zulu.

The scheme consists of two phases and the areas being served by this scheme include KwaDukuza, Mandeni,

Maphumulo and Ndwedwe as well as parts of the King Cetshwayo District and the City of uMhlathuze.

Speaking on behalf of Umgeni Water, board chairperson Ziphozethu Mathenjwa­ said they will continue to contribute to the development of the Mandeni area as well as the entire iLembe District.

“For the first time, supply interruptions and accompanying inconveniences have been significantly reduced and there is also an abundance of water available for now and well into the future,” said Mathenjwa.

Four arrested for firearm possession in Maphumulo WEEKLY REPORTER

OUR suspects appeared at the Maphumulo Magistrates Court on Friday, January 11 for possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspects were arrested by police officers from the ILembe Cluster Task Team and Umhlali K9 Unit during an intelligence driven operation conducted on Friday morning.

Three suspects, aged between 42 and 48, were arrested at Mabhobhane and Enhlangwini areas after they were found in possession of three home-made shotguns and a handgun. All firearms had one round of ammunition each. A 42year-old suspect from Enhlangwini was found with a home-made shotgun and a handgun. The other two suspects were found with a home-made shotgun each. Police proceeded to Endanyini area where a 39-year-old suspect was found with a pistol in his possession; he was immediately arrested. His firearm had its serial number filed off.

The suspects will be profiled to determine if they can be linked to other crimes in the area.

These operations will continue to combat the spread of unlicensed firearms in the province.

ANC officials ordered to get to work ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte came out with guns blazing last Tuesday, criticising leaders who serve themselves instead of the people of South Africa.

Speaking at the ANC’s 107-year birthday celebrations in the Shakaville Community Hall in KwaDukuza, Duarte said the message from the ANC’s top tier leadership was clear, help people or leave office.

“We did not commit to serving the people in an air-conditioned office and then drive home in a nice big car. Leave the car in the office and walk to the people. We want this from our officials on a daily basis,” she said.

Duarte told the General Gizenga Mpanza region that the leadership of the ANC was committed to re-establishing a better working relationship with communities on the ground.

She said that the time of ANC officials driving in large convoys was at an end. She warned that those leaders had no place in the party, stating that such behaviour was selfish and an insult to those still living in poverty: “People eat your dust while you drive through in convoys. The convoys must stop. Go back to the people.”

Duarte also said the ANC would be people-centric and had to become “obsessed” with service delivery: “People must do us one favour. If you are

a leader in the ANC and you do not know all the people in your community, please just resign so we can put someone better in your place. The people deserve that.”

“We cannot treat the people of SA like we are doing them a favour. Some are too used to blue lights and their road getting cleared.

“The time has come to say that the only thing that matters [is] how I am serving the people.

When I go home I must say this is what I did for our people today.”

Referencing a recent Ipsos survey, Duarte said that the 61% of votes predicted for the ANC was not a given.

“Don’t listen to that research. What we need is for you to go door-to-door and know exactly every street and the people who will vote for ANC in May. We are not going to wait for someone in an air-conditioned room to tell us 61% is right. We must make sure. We must work hard and not become complacent,” she stated.

While 2018 had been a challenging year for the ANC, Duarte called for the party to be strong: “We need to go forward now. There were difficult, dark moments in 2018. But we as the ANC will never waste a crisis. A crisis is when the ANC is at its best. Now is the time to unite, be firm and strong.”

Local law enforcement praised for sterling work during annual beach festival NKOSINATHI DUBE KWADUKUZA law enforcement, including the KDM Traffic and Crime prevention unit, SAPS and local security companies, were praised for their work at maintaining control at Blythedale beach over the festive period.

The annual Blythedale beach festival previously received criticism from homeowners and the Blythedale Ratepayers and Residents Association (BBRRA) for attracting unruly crowds. As such, the 2018 holiday season law enforcement worked tirelessly to ensure that Blythedale beach, known to draw in close to 20 000 people during the holidays, was under control.

In a statement, the BBRRA commended their work, saying: “The efforts of Director Prinsloo and the teams under his control are to be complimented on their efforts

over the festive season.

“These ladies and gentlemen toiled long hours in very hot conditions, were subjected to considerable abuse by unreasonable visitors, yet they executed their tasks and duties in a commendable manner. Despite a few unexpected challenges, they maintained good control and management of the crowds. There were a few minor incidents and, all in all, a good time was enjoyed by all.

“BBRRA also engaged K9 Security to assist to the law enforcement agencies if the need arose. Velocity Security and G4S, who operate in Blythedale, were also effective in maintaining a safe environment.

“The community places on record its appreciation to everyone involved in ensuring that the 2018 festive season went without incident and inconvenience to residents and visitors was minimal.”

Water scheme welcomed CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme includes infrastructure that is required for abstracting and treating water from the uThukela River to supply to secondary bulk and reticulation networks within the iLembe District Municipality with the purpose to supply an additional 55Ml/d of treated water to the coastal and inland areas of KwaDukuza and Mandeni.

In her keynote address, Tshwete said the visit was not a political campaign but instead was part of the department’s and government’s commitment to changing people’s lives.

“We would like to thank Umgeni for this state of the art plant as we know that water is a basic need of our people.

The department has invested a lot of money in such projects to ensure water access, blockage eradication, and for our people to have save drinking water,” said Tshwete.

The scheme is expected to supply purified water to over 300 000 people and at present over 147 00 households have access to a safe water supply.

Minister Tshwete urged the local community to use water sparingly.
