THE Margate Beach and lagoon are currently closed to the public until further notice, due to a sewerage leak, the Ugu District Municipality confirmed on Monday Municipal spokesperson France Zama said the closure was because the Margate 3a and 4a pump stations were experiencing simultaneous mechanical breakdowns, resulting in manholes overflowing into the lagoon.

“As a precautionary measure and for safety of beach goers, we will be closing off the beach and the lagoon until further notice.

We will, however, investigate this occurrence to establish any possible sabotage. Our teams are currently on site replacing damaged pumps with new units,” said Zama.

GU District Municipality is looking for an interim municipal manager while its current manager DD Naidoo is on sick leave; and amid reports that the position will be filled by former eThekwini municipal manager Sibusiso Sithole, the municipality refused to confirm or deny the allegations, saying they would “let due process follow”.

According to media reports last week, Sithole was announced as the interim manager at the special council meeting held on Wednesday last week.

“We have, however, observed with interest that various media outlets have positioned themselves as having authority on this matter by already making announcements as to who the incoming municipal manager is, a process which in our view is currently not being concluded upon.

ment Studies, specialising in Environmental Management from UKZN in 2018.

She has a challenge set out for her as Ugu is currently embroiled in a myriad of quandaries including allegations of maladministration, corruption, water supply challenges and consistent labour unrest.

On Friday last week, the municipality announced that 51 employees had been terminated from Port Shepstone and surrounding depots.

This brought the number of terminated employees since the beginning of labour unrest at the municipality earlier this year to 81.

Chairperson for the South African Municipal Workers Union in the region Mthandeni Ngcobo said the union would welcome the appointment of Sithole in the role.

“As the union, we have no problem with his appointment except if his appointment is the continuity of corruption and maladministration, then we will have a problem with him.

If he comes purely to provide solutions to the dead municipality, we accept his appointment,” said Ngcobo.

Man caught raping girl (3) in Emlangeni FEVER REPORTER A THREE-YEAR-OLD child was raped in Emlangeni, Phase 2 and the suspect was caught red-handed by the community.

According to police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis, the incident was reported by the child’s

aunt who was babysitting at the time.

Francis said the aunt alleged that she was babysitting her two nieces when she was disturbed by an intruder in the bedroom at about 2am on Saturday, February 8.

“A fight broke out between the aunt and the intruder and she was

able to escape to her neighbour’s house, however the suspect grabbed her three-year-old niece and fled into the bushes.

The neighbours with whom she had sought refuge went looking for the unknown intruder and he was allegedly caught raping the victim in the nearby bushes.

“The suspect was arrested by the community members and when police arrived he was badly assaulted and was transported to Umzinto Clinic where he succumbed to his injuries,” said Francis.

A case of rape and a case of murder have been registered with Umzinto SAPS.

“It is not yet known what the cause of death is. Police have opened an inquest docket for the incident,” said Ncane.

The body was taken to a state mortuary and a post mortem will be conducted to uncover the cause of death.

Fatal crash near Southbroom KADWA'S

wo people have died after a car and a bakkie collided head-on near Southbroom on Friday.

According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha, the accident occured at about 8.30pm on the R61 near Southbroom on Friday evening.

Botha said when emergency services arrived on scene one person had died on impact, two people had sustained critical injuries, while three sustained serious injuries. All the injured patients were treated on the scene and transported to hospital.

“One of the critical patients also unfortunately died from their injuries shortly after arriving at hospital, despite the efforts of the paramedics and hospital staff,” said Botha.

Police identified the victim who died on the scene as Jabulani Charles Mngomezulu (47). The second deceased has not been identified Margate SAPS are investigating a culpable homicide case and the cause of the accident has yet to be established.

WATER pipe near the main water reservoir in Hibberdene has been leaking for more than a week and reports to Ugu District Municipality have seemingly proven fruitless.

According to local resident Peter Swanepoel, the leak which lets water flow down Mount Pleasant Road in Woodgrange, has been leaking for more than week.

Swanepoel said he had reported the leak to Ugu, however a week later, nothing was done to rectify it.

“I think it may come from the water pump near the reservoir because the leak stops during load

shedding. There may be a breakage there,” said Swanepoel.

He added that by Tuesday this week, one source of the leak seemed to have been fixed, but there was still water running down from another source in the same vicinity.

Ugu District Municipality said they would investigate the matter.

Municipal spokesperson France Zama said the prolonged labour unrest has manifested itself into destruction of municipal infrastructure coupled with acts of intimidation and threats to operations.

“The municipality is still shocked at the manner in which municipal infrastructure and assets meant to deliver services to communities are being destroyed by criminal elements,” said Zama.

WITH reports of labour unrest and allegations of sabotage in recent weeks, Ugu District municipality has been experiencing even more difficulty with water supply in the region and residents say the situation is making them sick, literally.

Two people from the Margate area said they had to visit doctors rooms after coming into contact with tap water from the municipality last week.

One of the residents said she was hospitalised for two weeks after drinking the tap water.

The resident said she first experienced bowel problems after dining at a local restaurant, so at first she thought she may have been experiencing food poisoning but was told a different story at the hospital.

“They could not identify any traces of food poisoning in my system, so the only other thing that I had that day was the tap water,” said the 73-year-old resident.

“Now, two days after being discharged from hospital, I am still not feeling so good.

I feel very weak,” she said.

Local retired doctor, Dr. Jean Peltz said residents were also prone to falling sick from the inhalation of E. coli in the air as a result of several un-flushed toilets due to no water.

UGU District Municipality terminated the employment contracts of 51 employees from Port Shepstone surrounding depots on Friday last week, saying they “blatantly defied” an instruction to return to work.

This group of workers are in addition to 42 workers from Harding and 28 workers from the Park Rynie depot which were also recently fired by the municipality for the same reason.

Following the terminations, on Tuesday, the municipality reported that the Harding reservoir had been damaged and a water tanker truck destroyed by fire at the Park Rynie depot.

Ugu said the damaged reservoir supplies water to the hospitals in the Harding area and alleged that this was a deliberate act of sabotage and hindered their ability to supply water in these areas.

Six municipal vehicles have also been allegedly torched in the district since the beginning of labour unrest at the municipality earlier this year.

Disease-causing germs can be spread from sewage if it is not disposed of properly or if people do not practise proper toilet hygiene.

These disease-causing germs and parasites can be spread directly by people coming into contact with sewage or toilet waste, or indirectly by people coming into contact with flies and cockroaches which carry the germs, and parasites in or on their bodies. Dogs and cats can carry germs and parasites too as is the case with drinking water which has been contaminated by sewage.

With the current water woes at Ugu, some areas like Ramsgate have been without water for more than two weeks.

Ugu District Mmunicipality spokesperson France Zama said the municipality had not received any reports of people falling sick from tap water and encouraged residents to report these matters.

“We’ve had no reports of such, so for us to follow up on the query, we would need specific information in terms of areas, which hospitals/clinics they attended and how they know that its tap water that makes them sick,” said Zama.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital also had no confirmed cases of illness due to tap water consumption.

“Intimidations and threats are rife in the (Harding) area and the security of our technicians in the area is being compromised,” said Zama.

However, Zama said, the municipality would not “egg-walk” around taking decisive action against staff members who participated in unlawful strike action.

“Our residents are currently enduring the difficulty of water supply disruptions due to the prolonged labour unrest which has manifested itself to destruction to municipal infrastructure coupled with acts of intimidation and threats to our operations,” said municipal spokesperson France Zama.

“We will continue to forge ahead with our effort of striving to maintain law and order in the workplace while striving to provide services to our residents,” said Zama.

Chairperson for the South African Municipal Workers Union in the region, Mthandeni Ngcobo said the terminations were “un-procedural”.

“The correct procedure for any institution when terminating employees is to subject them to a disciplinary hearing first and thereafter determine whether they are found guilty or not. Ugu has bypassed this step in firing employees from the municipality and that is not lawful,” said Ngcobo.

Ngcobo said the union would contest the terminations.

“We are going to appeal all the terminations and we don’t care whether it goes up as far as the constitutional court to get justice for the workers we are willing to fight,” said Ngcobo.

Ngcobo said allegations of workers engaging in an unprotected strike were blatant lies.

“The municipality took away the tools of trade from employees, and without these, the employees were unable to work. This is why they have not been able to report for duty, not because they were on strike” said Ngcobo.

“Our belief as the union is that all these tactics are part of the municipality’s senior management ploy to deploy their favoured service providers to do the work of the terminated employees and thereby also profit from these contracts,” said Ngcobo.

He categorically denied any knowledge or participation in alleged acts of sabotage to municipal infrastructure and/ or intimidation to municipal workers.

Organiser and founder from Mzabalazo, Siko Nqambi said the organisation has liaised with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality youth office in organising free transportation for the Idols hopefuls to the auditions.

Contestants will be picked up from the Port Shepstone Youth Office from 7am on Saturday morning.

T’S been another month of rain and extreme heat and humidity, but with everything in life there are always pros and cons. Without the rain, our water situation on the coast would have been far worse.

The downside being, below the water line has meant that the Port Shepstone Borough Field has been waterlogged for weeks. Nevertheless, Hibiscus Kennel Club has kept to its training schedule and obedience training has continued, although in a somewhat subdued manner, on the verandah or in the clubhouse.

Socialisation forms a large part of our training so there has been plenty of opportunity for working close indoors surrounded by tables, chairs and equipment. Voices are louder as are barks and unfamiliar places such as storerooms and kitchens are utilised as well as tiled floors instead of grass.

We must congratulate the owners and their dogs who arrive each week to train, not expecting to win, but just to allow their dogs to become the best they can. Every dog is different and they may not be agility champions or the fastest flyball dog, but the handler is super proud of what they achieved during a training session. They are the true winners.

There are probably so many dog owners out there who would like to participate in something where they are able to involve their dog. You will find this at HKC. Having said that, last weekend was

The workshops are conducted

by Karin Warman and Baphiwe Duma for resilience building, as well as addressing the ongoing need for trauma counselling.

CEO Di Van Dyk told her story about her experience with ‘first love’.

It involved a boy and his bat, silk worms, snot, blood and tears.

Van Dyk thanked the community for their ongoing support and gave the background of the Memory Book Workshop.

South Coast shines at international Dive Show in Germany ROLAND and Beulah Mauz from African Dive Adventures engaged with keen international tour operators and ocean enthusiasts at the recent marine-based trade show, Die Boot Messe, held in Dusseldorf, Germany from January 18 to January 26.

The 50th edition of the trade show was hosted across 17 halls, showcasing everything from boats through to dive sites and fishing equipment.

It is the largest trade show of its kind worldwide, attracting in excess of 250 000 European tourists looking for new adventures.

The KZN South Coast couple distributed flyers and highlighted the many aquatic adventures offered by the KZN South Coast, including the annual Sardine Run, whale migration, as well as the Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal

dive sites.

They also outlined the world-class accommodation facilities and unique hinterland experiences on offer.

CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT), Phelisa Mangcu, said this exposure is key to attracting international tourists to the region.

“USCT aims to boost our leisure and business tourism offerings beyond South African borders, and well-attended events such as Die Boot Messe serve to achieve this,” said Mangcu.

Roland said: “We highlighted the amazing tourism sites and infrastructure we have on the South Coast, publicising the region as one of the top holiday destinations for marine ecofriends and shark-diving enthusiasts worldwide.” — Supplied

THE Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alayam invites all to their annual Maha Shivarathri prayer, which is known to Hindus as the (Great night of Lord Shiva) on Friday, February 21 until Saturday, February 22 from 6pm to 6am.

The night will begin with Hawan at 6pm followed by spiritual Bhajans rendered. Supper and refresh-

ments will be served throughout the night. All service groups and temple organisations are most welcome to render Bhajans at the temple.

OUTH City Christian School Grade 11 pupil Vian Senekal will be competing for his third Protea cap in bass fishing at the national event which will be held at Clanwilliam from March 26 to March 30.

Vian participated at the International Test vs Zimbabwe in December 2019 at Albert Falls.

The test was hosted by South Africa and the SA boys won the test with a record score difference. SA caught 27 more fish and 68.69kg more in total.

OUTH Coast school pupils celebrated Valentine’s Day in various ways last Friday, February 14.

At South Coast Academy the primary school pupils were encouraged to come dressed in the traditional red and white and pink and they all participated enthusiastically.

The Port Shepstone High School Elected Council Learners had great fun delivering cards and personalised gifts to some lucky people creating a festive atmosphere at the school.

At Port Edward primary school the prefects

sold a variety of chocolates and lollipops, flowers and cards for the children to give to their ‘pals’. Amber Van Der Merwe and Lolitha Zoko wore wings to deliver the gifts, but the highlight of the day was Ethan and Kyle Van Aswegan in their bright pink tutus.

The little ones from A Place Called Home play school and pre-school in Margate also came dressed in red and white and they all got spoiled with some snacks to celebrate the day.

At Suid Natal High School it was the staff’s turn to be pampered for a change as the SuidNatal prefects took time out before school to spoil their staff members.

Why can’t we throw the book at these socalled heroes of the struggle whose only interest is lining their pockets in the name of BEE and “Business networking”? Yes they have struggle credentials.

A close friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, but through phenomenal support from friends and family she has pushed through with a tremendous fighting spirit.

She lost her long tresses of hair to chemotherapy, and is now happily sporting a chic wig.

Her optimism has been an inspiration to all who know her. If you know someone who is a cancer survivor be sure to let them know how brave they are, and that you are fully behind them.

Water woes continue to affect Ugu residents for yet another week, and unfortunately no good news is in sight.

The municipality is in talks with Cogta to appoint a new municipal manager, and many are hoping that this will bring about some practical solutions.

Until then, please use water sparingly, and extend a helping hand to those who have been without water for an unbearable amount of time.

AFTER hearing what our new Eskom head had to say about the load-shedding phenomenon in South Africa, I must say I truly lost hope.

In the same breath, I remembered that lies, deceit and dishonesty are after all a norm with our previous leaders, especially our last president before the current one, whose name I will not mention if I still wish to live long enough to see my minor children graduate from University.

Apparently the infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate so much that fixing it (not improving it so that it performs better), means that load-shedding will be part of our lives for the next 18 months.

Die leier van die studieprogram, Dr. Elia Abi-Jaoude, ‘n psigiater in die Hospitaal vir Siek Kinders en die Toronto Western Hospital. Tydens die navorsing van dr. Abi-Jaoude en sy kollegas het hulle in verskeie studies afgekom op verskeie gedragspatrone. Hul aanbevelings is dat streng terapeutiese behandeling toegepas moet word om die negatiewe effekte hok te slaan. Tieners moet, onder meer deur hul ouers, streng aangemoedig word om die tyd wat hulle aan die sosiale media bestee, drasties in te kort. Die aanbeveling raak ook die ouers, wat gevra word om eers hul eie tydbesteding aan die sosiale media in te kort voordat hulle hul kinders probeer oorreed.

Dr. Victor Fornari is die ondervoorsitter van die psigiatriese afdeling van die Zucker Hillside-hospitaal in Glen Oaks in New York. Hy wys daarop dat die jong mense van vandag nie ‘n wêreld sonder die sosiale media ken nie, en hul lewens is onlosmaaklik verbind aan hul selfone.

Daar is bewyse dat die sosiale media ‘n regstreekse verband het met selfmoordneigings en self-beserings onder jong mense. Fornari voel sterk daaroor dat geneeshere ouers moet raadgee oor hoe om die gebruik van selfone te verminder.

In ‘n ander Amerikaanse navorsingsprojek word aangetoon dat die getal jong mense wat in hospitale beland weens selfmoordgedagtes of pogings tussen 2008 en 2015 amper verdubbel het, met die grootste toename onder

tienermeisies. Nog ‘n studie het bevind oordosisse dwelms onder jong mense het tussen 2011 en 2018 drasties toegeneem, nadat daar vroeër ‘n afname was.

Dis insiggewend dat 89% van Amerikaanse jongmense tussen 13 en 17 slimfone het, ‘n persentasie wat oor ses jaar verdubbel het. Sewentig present van hierdie tieners bestee ‘n groot deel van hulle daaglikse tyd aan die verskillende sosiale mediasoorte, vergeleke by 33% in 2012. Hoewel dit moeilik is om te bepaal presies hoe die geestesgesondheid van die tieners geaffekteer word, dui verskeie gesaghebbende studies daarop dis ernstig negatief.

Die Kanadese navorsers verwys na twee studies – een in Amerika en die ander in Duitsland – wat bevind het dat kinders wat baie tyd op Facebook bestee meer vatbaar was vir emosies soos afguns en onsekerheid oor hul eie selfbeeld. Daarbenewens is bevind hoe meer tyd tieners aan die sosiale media bestee, hoe ongelukkiger hulle met hul eie omstandighede is. Dit affekteer ook hul slaappatrone negatief.

Municipality improves on its audit outcomes The Ugu District Municipality recognises and supports the work of the Chapter 9 institutions such as Auditor-General of South Africa in strengthening our democracy through the execution of the important task of oversight, accountability, and good governance in the municipality.

The latest audit outcomes for the financial year 2018/19 presented to council revealed a remarkable improvement where the municipality achieved a Qualified audit outcome.

This improved audit outcome can be attributed to the resilient character of municipal leadership which, despite all detractors, succeeded in implementing stringent measures which are poised to deliver a clean audit outcome in the next financial year.

Having noted the Auditor General’s comments, the leadership collective of the municipality led by His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Sizwe Ngcobo re-affirmed its commitment to improving the quality of audit outcomes and that consequence management will be strictly applied where there is non-compliance with municipal regulations and other relevant pieces of legislation.

In preparation for the clean audit outcome for the next financial year, a consolidated Audit Corrective Action Plan with time frames has been developed by the municipality which seeks to address and clear all the issues raised by the Auditor-General’s report.

YOUR first job search after graduation can be both exciting and terrifying, particularly in South Africa where many qualified people compete for a limited number of vacancies. But the experience can be made much more rewarding, and the chances of success greater, by following a few simple guidelines, according to an education expert. “You have to approach the job search with a plan, rather than falling into it haphazardly, as the latter can quickly lead to frustration and disappointment,” said Wonga Ntshinga, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education. Ntshinga said when the economy is constrained, as it currently is in South Africa, finding a job can be hard even for those with experience, but that it can be especially daunting for first-time job seekers who are not yet familiar with the processes related to searching for work. “First of all, recent graduates must keep an open mind and stay alert for potential opportunities.

Don’t get stuck on the idea that there is just one specific kind of job for you and that if you don’t find the exact role that you intended stepping into after graduation, you need to keep looking until you do.

“Understand that you may need to get a foot in a door first, and that once you’ve done so and proved yourself, you may start encountering more desirable opportunities in the environment you find yourself,” he said. Ntshinga said it is very important for graduates to use their time as productively as possible, and go searching for opportunities rather than waiting for them to come knocking.

“By following the steps below, you will be in a much better position to realise success on your job search journey,” he said.

1) LAY THE GROUNDWORK It may sound obvious, but many don’t realise the importance of getting the slog out of the way before they start submitting applications, Ntshinga said.

“You have to make sure that all your paperwork is in order, such as copies of your ID, academic transcripts, your degree, and so forth. Depending on your field, you may need additional documentation specific to your industry. Ensure that you have these in hard and digital format, ready to submit when required.

“Then, of course, you need to get your CV in tip-top shape. It can’t be stressed enough that it needs to be neat, concise and without any errors such as incorrect dates or grammatical slip-ups. It’s always a good idea to get a set of expert eyes on your CV before sending it off, so approach your graduate institution’s career centre for assistance in this regard,” he said.

2) SET GOALS Ntshinga said one should spend a few hours every day on the search, and not leave it for when you feel like it.

“Inspiration may never hit, so don’t wait for it. Set out each day with the aim of finding and applying for a certain number of opportunities. Scour online job listings, widen your net to related vacancies even if not a 100% match to your preferred position, and cold call companies’ HR departments.

“When you send in an application for a vacancy, or your CV to the HR department to keep on file, remember to tailor your covering letter and experience to the specific company and position. And very importantly, keep a detailed and updated spreadsheet indicating where you applied, what you applied for, date of application and contact details of the person to whom you submitted the application. This may be useful later when you need to follow up on an application, or even when you want test the waters in future about potential vacancies.”

3) ROPE IN THE EXPERTS The job search will feel lonely at times, but you don’t have to go it alone, said Ntshinga.

“Join forces with recruitment agencies and approach your graduate institution for help with your search,” he advised.

“A good institution will have specialist resources to help you prepare your CV, practise your interview skills, and assist you in identifying where you might need to strengthen or alter your approach.

“There are also many public, private and online resources dedicated to assisting job-seekers, so identify and connect with those in your area.”

4) GROW PROFESSIONALLY WHILE YOU WAIT Ntshinga said it is vitally important not to stagnate professionally, particularly if the job-search takes a while.

“You absolutely must stay on top of developments in your profession, by networking and developing your relevant skills. Spend some time every week honing your professional skills by applying what you learnt during your studies. Volunteer your services in your community, go to industry networking events, and stay sharp. “Also consider gaining a complementary skill to boost your CV and your range of competence. If you keep going and keep growing, the doors of opportunity will start opening for you.”

N 2010, SAB launched SAB Zenzele, its broad-based black economic empowerment scheme, which placed ownership of 8.45% of the company’s shares in the hands of previously disadvantaged stakeholders.

Three trusts were created to benefit SAB’s key stakeholder groups: its employees, its retailers and the SAB Foundation Trust, established to support entrepreneurship projects that benefit low-income communities.

Employees were given their shares for free, while retailers paid a nominal amount.

Currently valued at almost R10 billion, the scheme has disbursed R4 billion in cash dividends to shareholders since 2010.

Yashveen Singh, a People Business Partner at SAB, Port Shepstone was one of two beneficiaries from KwaZulu-Natal and shared how the scheme has impacted his life.

Singh has worked for SAB for the past eight years.

He started in Durban as an account manager and is currently working in Port Shepstone as a People Business Partner.

On his first day of work, Yashveen learned that he had been awarded SAB Zenzele shares – a very pleasant surprise.

“As soon as I received the shares, I realised what a great decision I’d made to join SAB,” he said.

A few years later, Singh was promoted and received a top-up of his shares.

This, he says, encouraged him to work harder.

It also makes him take ownership, like looking for ways to save the company money. Whenever Singh receives dividend payments from SAB Zenzele, he buys more shares and plans to buy even more with his final pay-out next year.

Apply the 50/30/20 rule US Senator Elizabeth Warren, a bankruptcy expert, and her daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi, popularised this rule: split your income into three spending categories: 50% goes to essential bills and monthly expenses, 20% toward financial goals and 30% to personal spending (all the stuff you like to spend money on but don’t really need). Put the money earmarked for your financial goals into a separate savings account.

See what you’ll save if you pay extra into your home loan each month 2. Pay those bills And do it on time, every time. More than a third of your credit profile (35%) is based on your payment history, and late payments or bit payments can have a major, negative impact on your score.

The past is in the past - never be late again. You can move debit orders to a date when you’re sure you will have money, say the 3rd of the month. Then any public-holiday conflicts with pay day won’t impact you as badly.

Think in reverse about your retirement savings THERE is a major gap between expectation and reality when it comes to saving for retirement.

Many South Africans don’t consider that they need to replace their current income once they retire from work.

According to Ferdi Booysen, head of client solutions at Old Mutual Wealth, this is why it is important to first determine what amount of income you want to receive from your retirement funds.

This is in order to determine what you need to save now to be able to maintain your desired standard of living during retirement.

For example, if you decide you want to receive an income of R20 000 per month after tax for 25 years (increasing with inflation every year) you can then ascertain how much you need to put away each month to achieve this lifestyle goal.

A 30-year old, who wishes to retire at 65 and wants to sustain the above-mentioned after-tax income until age 90, would need to contribute R5 000 per month to a retirement annuity (increasing with inflation every year).

If he or she started contributing five years earli-

er (at age 25), this amount reduces to R3 900 per month (22% less) based on Old Mutual Wealth’s assumptions.

“Visualising what your retirement will look like with current provisions is not the easiest thing to do on your own. This is why it is extremely useful to create a lifetime cashflow model or view that includes short-, medium- and long-term financial goals,” says Booysen.

“When you start with the end-goal in mind, you are more likely to achieve the end-goal as you know exactly what path to follow. When you have determined your end-goal and know what you need to do to get there, it is extremely important to stick to your plan and not deviate from the path.”

However, life happens and there might be some unexpected events that lead to unexpected expenses. Booysen suggests that a financial planner should be able to assist you to rework the plan after an unexpected turn of events to get you back on your road to the end-goal within good time.

To get there, start reducing consumption across the board. A little saved here and a little saved there will leave you with more to pay off your debt, overdrafts or retail accounts. Choose one account to pay off and put all the extra you can into it at the beginning of the month. Keep paying a little above the minimum on your other debt and rinse, wash, repeat until that first debt is cleared.

Have one month’s celebration then start on the next debt - add what you were paying into that first account to your payments for debt #2. You’ll clear that even faster.

Move on to debt #3.

Keep going until you’ve cleared all debt, or at least got your total debt to below 30% of your income. But wait.

Before you close all those old accounts and open new ones bear in mind that a proven track record of debt repayment is good.

4. Old accounts are your friends 15% of your credit score depends on the age of your credit accounts. It is always easier to get credit if you already have credit, and especially a long history of good standing. If you close all your old ones and open a whole host of new accounts - or even just two or three, it can signal financial difficulties to the credit ratings algorithm.

Rather keep a credit card account that you’ve paid off and use it fairly regularly, always paying the total balance owing each month. This will build a fantastic credit history because it’s all about financial management.

5. It’s all about how you manage it 10% of your credit score depends on how you’ve managed the loans and debt that you have. So, while the high interest charged on credit card debt makes these accounts good options to pay off first, you do want to keep one or two open to show good management. So, once you’ve got your debt down, reduce your limits and notify the credit bureau so they can update your profile. Then use your credit wisely.

If you have paid off any judgements against you, have these removed from your profile.

6. Bide your time 10% of your credit score is based on how many new loans you’ve taken and inquired about over a certain period of time. So, wait until you are ready to take out a bond before you do your loan shopping, and then, complete it within a 45-day window, so that it’s treated as a single loan enquiry. Credit scores distinguish between a search for a single loan and a search for many new credit lines, in part by the length of time over which enquiries occur.

Finally Now, imagine the happy New Year you’ll have when your debt is reduced, and your credit score is healthy. Don’t wait till next year, start now.

AMALAKHE rapper ‘Manyuza’ is using his music as a tool to tell township stories and heal his peers.

Born Thabiso Innocent Mlotshwa in St Faiths, the 28-year-old rapper said he recorded his first song in 2008.

“I was doing Grade 11 at the time and I really enjoyed being involved in the music scene, but I had to take a break the following year to focus on my matric year,” said Mlotshwa.

After matric Mlotshwa went on to study for a Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting from the Durban University of Technology.

“I was only able to return to the music industry in 2014 after I completed my diploma and to this day I have never looked back,” said Mlotshwa.

Due to job scarcity Mlotshwa has not been able to secure a job in his field of study and is currently working in retail while pursuing his music dream on the side.

“Music for me is happiness epitomised. A lot of people are looking for happiness in a myriad of things, I was lucky to find it in music. I am never happier than when I am behind the mic,” said Mlotshwa.

He described his sound as “Kasi trap” which he describes as a mixture of rap music from the location as well as trap music.

about all the things that I experienced growing up in the township and was inspired by my encounters with various people from the location.

I speak about drugs, single parent families, crime, love and other things that happen in the township,” said Mlotshwa.

He said although his family is very supportive of his music, they are still wary as it has not yet been able to produce any feasible financial reward.

“My family loves my music and I’m very grateful for their support. There are just a lot of other bread-and-butter issues that they have to be concerned about also, as we are not a particularly well-off family,” said Mlotshwa who lives with his mother and two siblings.

Mlotshwa will be releasing a mixtape at the beginning of May titled Ithemba lase Kasi which will be available from all online platforms. He has already released a single titled Sisonke and a music video will be released soon. Artists featured on the mixtape include producer Masiyano, Khetha, River Nile and Mlyza from Umlazi.

“I have also confirmed collaborations with Master D, Emtee the Venacular, Young Cannibal and Virus in the near future.”

THE South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s (SADAG) aim for Teen Suicide Prevention Week (February 16 - February 23) is to educate friends, parents, family, loved ones, teachers and communities to #ACT to help prevent teen suicide. An 11-year-old boy fights for his life in Reiger Park after a suicide attempt related to bullying; a 16-year-old pupil at a high school in the Vaal attempted to end her life after failing an exam and Grade 11; a pupil from Vereeniging passed away after allegedly drinking poison. The most at-risk age group for suicide is adolescents and suicides are often covered in press stories which highlight the pressing need within this country to ensure that we continue sharing as much information on Teen Suicide Prevention as we possibly can. One teen suicide is one suicide too many.

One small act can make a difference and may save a life. #AskCareTreat (ACT) is a call-to-action to encourage early intervention when someone is experiencing difficulty navigating stress or depression or may be at risk of suicide. We want parents, teachers, friends and communities to recognise the risk factors and warning signs that may indicate a potential suicidal crisis, and empower everyone to know how to #ACT: Ask - Ask directly: “Are you experiencing suicidal thoughts?”, “Have you ever thought of hurting yourself”, “Have you ever felt like you don’t want to live anymore”?

Versatile: 2020 Renault Triber 1.0 GORDON HALL

DVISORY: Renault Triber comes out of the same factory in Chennai as Kwid and Datsun GO+, but that’s where similarities end. It isn’t a rebadged or re-imagined Kwid.

Nor is it a GO+ with different body panels and engine. Jesus Boveda, Renault SA’s VP for marketing and communications, wanted me to emphasise that.

Triber is built on a completely new, modular platform. Its body is built for strength, space, comfort and convenience. It is not an SUV although it looks like one. It isn’t a hatchback either. Or an MPV. It’s Renault’s affordable offering for anyone wanting one of the above, but isn’t quite sure which and demands versatility when unexpected needs arise.

It can be a family five-seater with humungous boot, a two-person camping companion with loads of space, a four-seater with room for a surfboard, or a seven-seat microbus for your personal tribe. Hence the name; Triber.

That tribe could be a big nuclear family; you and me with yours, mine and ours; family plus in-laws or Stacy the student with six of her study buddies.

It works like this: In Life mode it’s a conventional five-seat family wagon. The second row of seats can be adjusted horizontally and the seatbacks reclined by a few degrees for comfort.

Or they can be laid almost flat for extra packing room. Folding and tumbling one or both chairs adds yet more.

This row has repeater vents so that passengers can share the air conditioning. On midrange Dynamique or upper-class Prestige models, those air controls are adjustable.

In Renault’s defence, it’s common industry practice to lead at first launch with a base engine; followed later by something more powerful, should customers demand it. As Gran undoubtedly told Mom: “Don’t surrender all your goods upfront. Keep ‘em wanting more.”

Five-speed manual is the only gearbox choice right now although an AMT will become available for the top car later this year.

As usual there are three models; Expression, Dynamique and Prestige. Expression starts the ball rolling with two airbags; 14” steel wheels with plain caps; fabric seats; ABS brakes with EBD; manual exterior mirrors; automatic locking on the move with impact-sensing unlocking; powered windows in front; single glove box; two-speaker AM/FM radio with Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB, and the EasyFix rearmost seats.

Upward progression introduces two further airbags, 15” wheels with flex caps, eight-inch touchscreen infotainment centre with satnav and screen sharing, powered mirrors and rear windows, a second glove box, two chilled storage compartments, push button starting, reversing camera, LED DRLs and extra power points.

Colours: Ice cool white is the only plain shade, while optional metallics include moonlight silver, electric blue, fiery red and honey yellow.

The Renault Triber comes in three models: Expression, Dynamique and Prestige.

Oil helps fuel users while Rand surges - AA STEADY declines in international oil prices have got the upper hand over a weakening Rand, setting the stage for fuel price reductions at month end.

This is according to the Automobile Association (AA), which was commenting on unaudited mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund.

“Petrol is currently showing a drop of between 14 and 25 cents a litre, diesel around 55 cents, and illuminating paraffin 66 cents.”

The AA said oil’s pullback since the start of the month has been quite marked.

“In the case of illuminating paraffin, the landed price of the fuel dropped by over 90 cents in two weeks. Similar positive effects have been noted on the other main liquid fuels.”

However, the Rand has weakened substantially over the same period, with the moving average against the US dollar slipping from just over R14.30 to R14.85.

“This reflects underlying weak economic sentiment in South Africa, and we share the view of many commentators that further weakening is likely,” the Association said.

Fortunately, the Rand’s poor showing was not enough to take the shine off the reduction in the landed prices of fuel.

The AA said the trends from now to monthend would determine whether fuel prices could cling on to these gains.

“If the Rand continues to slip, we might see some reversal of the trend,” it concluded.

SOUTHERN EXPLORER ASSOCIATION EXPRESSION OF INTEREST OUTSOURCING – ADMINISTRATION, PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING OF SOUTHERN EXPLORER ROUTE GUIDE AND SOCIAL MEDIA Pursuant to a resolution taken by members of the Southern Explorer Association member, the outsourcing of the administration, sales, production, distribution and marketing of the Southern Explorer Route guide and activities relating to social media shall be investigated.

To this end potential vendors with administrative, sales, print production, marketing and social media experience are invited to an “Expressions of Interest” briefing with a view of applying for such undertaking.

A detailed presentation of such Expression of Interest, it’s terms and application deadlines will be presented at a meeting where a hard copy of the terms of the Expressions of interest will be made available.

Local snooker star selected for first Pro Snooker ranking event SELVIN Moodley has been selected with 15 other top players from the country for the first Pro Snooker ranking event which will held at the QMasters Centre in Durban from February 21 to February 23. Eight of

the top 16 are former SA Champions making this ranking event a tough one.

Moodley’s first match is against former SA Champion, Tairiq Samsodien. Moodley has been in good form

recently and will be looking forward to his match. The snooker players from Ugu wish him all the best in this great achievement of representing the district.
