Pupils pay it forward on ISMD T

HURSDAY, March 14 marked International School Meals Day (ISMD) and Highbury Preparatory Grade 6 boys helped Julika Falconer, Highbury mum and CEO of local NPO called Zero2Five Trust, to feed a Futurelife breakfast to 1 400 children.

It was an epic undertaking, from raising funds for 1 400 lunch boxes, to making peanut butter sandwiches (courtesy of Lievito Bakery), filling the lunch boxes and delivering them to Inchanga Primary, Highbury’s twin school, and Ethembeni School next door.

The pupils were also given fresh apples from local business The Juice Kitchen and wonderful gifts to take home for the holidays in form of party packs and Dischem Micropopz albums with toys from the Robin Hood Foundation. It was a great experience for the Highbury Grade 6 boys and they had many stories to tell at home that day.

International School Meals Day (ISMD) is a unique campaign with the aim of raising awareness of good nutri-

tion for all children, regardless of their circumstances.

Around the world there is an unprecedented understanding and adoption of school meal programmes as an economic investment strategy for country governments.

School feeding programmes not only serve social protection and development goals by feeding hungry children and fostering education, they also contribute intergenerational benefits to families and can create jobs.

Much has been done in SA in the past years to boost the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) by the Department of Education with Private/ Public partnerships from all major SA breakfast manufacturers and NPOs. The cooked NSNP lunch, which most quintile one to three schools feed around 10 am already because of the many children arriving at school on an empty stomach, should ideally be moved to mid-day. The children should arrive to a low GI, highly nutritious school breakfast and have a piece

ECYCLING is one of the essential actions required to ensure the preservation of the world we’re living in for future generations.

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to recognise the importance of recycling and, due to it’s success in September 2018, the Bureau of International Recycling and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation worked together to have this day recognised officially by the UN. Being held on March 18 every year, the theme for 2019, “Recycling into the Future”, was announced by the Global Recycling Foundation, which was officially born in October 2018.

According to the foundation, this day focuses on the power of youth, education, and innovation in ensuring a brighter future for the planet.

Recycling in South Africa Romy Wenzel, who is avid supporter of keeping the Earth clean and regularly participates in beach clean-ups along the coast, said: “My motto is reduce, reuse and recycle. The more people get involved, the easier the waste control management is. However, it has become a little frustrating as in particular ‘orange bags’ have been collected randomly. Nevertheless, people should not stop recycling as it is vital to teach the youth to recycle as the Earth’s resources are not infinite and therefore should not be wasted unnecessarily.”

- Glass — Beverage bottles and food jars such as tomato sauce, jam and mayonnaise bottles - Paper — White office paper, magazines and books (as long as nothing is laminated), newspaper, and cardboard (boxes and cereal boxes).

- Plastic — Ice cream and milk containers, fabric softener bottles, plastic bags and even cling-wrap can all be recycled.

- Tetrapak — Fruit juice and milk containers look like they’re made out of paper but they are lined with aluminium foil and plastic so they must be recycled separately.

The following cannot be recycled: - Drinking glasses - Light bulbs - Laminated or waxy paper - Punch confetti - Carbon paper - Stickers - Disposable batteries - Pyrex - Ceramics (plates).

BULLDOGS and associated breeds have become some of the most popular canines in the world. Their flat faces and stubby tails have even found their ways into the homes of the rich and famous, yet not many people are aware of the special needs that these breeds have.

For years, the Bulldog Rescue Angels (BRA), a non-profit organisation that specialises in rescuing and rehabilitating bulldogs and associated breeds, have been hard at work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming bulldogs across the country. The organisation also prioritises educating owners and prospective bulldog owners on the requirements of these dogs that often people are not aware of at the time of getting one.

Chantel Van Der Merwe, one of the volunteers and co-founders of BRA, said that it’s been three years since the organisation was established and to date they have rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed several dogs.

“Bulldogs have such an appeal and as such can go for large sums of money. With money, unfortunately, these dogs become big business for unscrupulous breeders. Families end up with an animal with severe health issues and, most importantly, the poor dog suffers. Once people re-

alise how expensive veterinary bills can be, they end up abandoning these dogs. BRA was established with the dogs in mind.

“With the assistance from our sponsors, donors and members of BRA, we have been able to give many dogs new leases on life. All the hard work and long hours makes everything we do so rewarding and worthwhile. We really want to give a voice to these beautiful animals and we are absolutely grateful for everyone who has assisted us,” she said.

Jolanda Vorster, from BRA, said that bulldogs in particular are prone to many health-related issues that cannot be established during puppy stages. “Being a brachycephalic breed, bulldogs have breathing issues which can lead to heatstroke, among other things.

“The ears as well as folds found on the nose and other regions require regular anti-bacterial cleaning to prevent yeast infections and other associated infections. Furthermore, these breeds can ring up quite substantial veterinary bills,” she said.

Cooking up a potjie storm

>>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com WITH Savanna Comedy Week at the Butlers Comedy Night just around the corner, comedian John Vlismas spoke to the Fever’s Purnal­Poonusamy about what to expect as well as what inspires him.

PP (Purnal Poonusamy): Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

JV (John Vlismas): My name is John. I’m quite short and I identify as South African, except when on crowded lifts. I’m quite anti-social and find working in front of people while in a beam of light very comfortable.

PP: How do you feel participating in this show?

JV: I am very excited, a little cynical and quite needy — but at the hearing, they said I should try and push through these feelings.

PP: What can patrons expect from your piece in the show?

JV: I suspect there will be mild to strong adult themes as a motif, but there will be some undertones of humour, with left leaning political accents and some strong social realism propositions.

PP: What is your source of inspiration for the material in your shows?

JV: I’m a big fan of humans — I go on little safaris of my own and watch them. I even watch myself and look for my own quirks.

Also, books are full of stories of things we’ve done as well.

PP: What set you on your journey to becoming a comedian?

JV: I think being an alternative kid among WASPS had a lot to do with how I decided to approach the world. Interesting how the kid on the outside is still standing on the outside — but now instead of just staring, they pay and laugh. I’d say that’s progress.

PP: What inspires and motivates you?

JV: The absurdity of the human — how selfimportant and how ultimately pointless we are.

AQUAZONE Swim Club’s hugely successful Potjie Cook Off fundraiser was held at Station Masters Hillcrest recently.

A huge thank you goes out to the 15 contestants of the Potjie cook-off, who fed in the region of 200 odd people on the day, and of course all of you who bought tickets to support the event. The proceeds of the event (over R 20 000) will go towards the costs to send nine senior club members to Mare Nostrum in Monaco and Treviso in Italy to attend an international gala and coaching camp with coaches from all around the world.

The atmosphere on the day was really festive, with live music from band members Andrew Makins, Robert Pistorius and Steve Murray, and the rugby on the TV screens, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and evening.

As a first event of this kind the club has organised, they were thrilled with the turn out, and already have some great ideas for the next Potjie Cook Off, so keep a look out for details towards the end of the year.

You don’t want to miss this event next time!

ITH an aim of water for all by 2030 (sustainable development goal six), World Water Day, a UN-Water initiative, is set to take place on March 22, with the theme “Leaving no one behind”.

This day will focus on tackling the water crisis all over the world by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind.

According to the World Water Day website, there are currently billions of people that are still living without safe water — their households, schools, workplaces, farms and factories struggling to survive and thrive.

Marginalised groups — women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled people and many others — are often overlooked, and sometimes face discrimination, as they try to access and manage the safe water they need.

What is the human right to water?

In 2010, the UN recognized “the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights.” It entitles everyone, without discrimination, to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic use; which includes water for drinking, personal sanitation, washing of clothes, food preparation, and personal and household hygiene.

What needs to be done?

To “leave no one behind”, efforts must be focused towards including people who have been marginalised or ignored. Water services must meet the needs of these groups and their voices must be heard in decision-making processes. Regulatory and legal frameworks must recognise the right to water for all people, and sufficient funding must be fairly and effectively targeted at those who need it most.

chairman of the Kloof Conservancy, Paolo Candotti, who said: “Despite the recent good rains, we live in a water scarce region and climate change is making things worse by the day.

“Access to water is a basic human right but one that cannot be taken for granted. As a conservancy, we strongly advocate the importance of rain harvesting, removing water-sapping invasive species and planting low water demanding indigenous plant species. We also advocate responsible behaviours to avoid polluting our rivers so that they can be used safely for recreational and traditional purposes as well as for growing crops by small scale vegetable gardeners in the city.

“All residents have a civic responsibility to be water wise — it’s the right thing to do!”

Facts about water from the UN - An estimated 2.1 billion people live without safe water at home - One in four primary schools have no drinking water service, with pupils using unprotected sources or going

thirsty - More than 700 children under five years of age die every day from diarrhoea linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation - Globally, 80% of the people who have to use unsafe and unprotected water sources live in rural areas - Women and girls are responsible for water collection in eight out of 10 households with water off-premises - For the 68.5 million people who have been forced to flee their homes, accessing safe water services is highly problematic - Around 159 million people collect their drinking water from surface water such as ponds and streams - Around four billion people — nearly two-thirds of the world’s population — experience severe water scarcity during at least one month of the year.

- Over 800 women die every day from complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

- 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.

Kloof housebreaker arrested A BLUE Security armed response officer arrested an alleged housebreaker in Kloof and recovered several stolen goods recently.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the alleged housebreaker had activated the external beams on a property where he had removed a brush cutter and an extension cord from a garden shed. The incident occurred at around 6.10 pm.

“The officer arrived at the scene to investigate and found the toolshed door wide open and the suspect standing against a wall inside the shed. He questioned the suspect regarding his presence on the property and then asked him to step out of the shed,” Mathios said.

“The suspect was found to be carrying a 20cm knife in his front pocket and he had a white nylon sack in his possession.

The sack contained a portable LED light, a wrist watch, broken shower fittings, a bedside lamp and a beanie. It is unclear where the suspect obtained the goods.

“The brush cutter and extension cable were placed back in the shed,” Mathios said.

The suspect was handed over to Kloof SAPS at the scene of the crime.

Mathios said the incident highlighted the importance of ensuring that external beams are always switched on at night for an effective early warning system to alert homeowners to the presence of an intruder on the property.

“External beams are an inexpensive additional layer of security that homeowners can add to their home security system at any stage to improve a home’s security. The beams can be isolated from the rest of the home alarm system and switched off when the family is outside and turned on when the house is locked up in the evening,” Mathios said.

Mathios added that smart home alarm systems also now allowed for CCTV surveillance cameras to be connected to external beams to send real time photographs of an alarm activation directly to a resident’s mobile phone via the Blue Security Mobile App. “If an intruder breaches the system, the camera sends images to our control centre and to the homeowner’s cellphone via the mobile app to ensure swift action to more easily locate and stop the intruder in his tracks on the property,” he said.

OMEDIAN Dustin Moore chatted to Fever’s Purnal Poonusamy to share his love for comedy with us.

PP (Purnal Poonusamy): Tell us a bit about yourself.

DM (Dustin Moore): I’m from Johannesburg and I’d say I’m a typical south African boy — I love sports, braais and playing chess.

PP: How do you feel about participating in Durban, later this month?

DM: I’m super excited. I’ve been to Durban before and I had such a great time. The audiences are so much fun.

PP: What can the audience expect from your piece in the show?

DM: I do improv crowd work at live shows, which is always fun to do as it allows crowd members to get involved in the show. I mix that up with some written jokes.

PP: What is your source of inspiration for the material in your shows?

DM: Weird and funny daily things that happen that everyone can relate to. Dating my crazy girlfriend, travelling and family are great sources.

PP: What set you on your journey to becoming a comedian?

DM: In a previous life I was a private banker at Investec, and one day I just decided to follow my dreams. I applied for an open mic, and I now I’m doing this interview.

PP: What inspires and motivates you?

DM: Comedy itself is inspiring — you get to perform for real people so the feedback is immediate. I have fallen in love with performing, and it’s definitely what motivates me.

PP: When not on stage, how do you spend your time?

DM: I’m addicted to online chess — I know, how interesting — and I also eat up books and podcasts like half-price biltong and try exercise. I am actually nomadic so travelling is a big part of my life.

PP: What has been a memorable moment in your career thus far?

DM: Hosting the Magners international Comedy Festival Gala Show. That was a huge show and the pressure built up for months before. That was my watershed moment.

PP: What is next on the agenda for you, and what can you tell us about it?

DM: I will be performing in

12 countries this year so that’s my next goal.

It’s lots of fun but also very challenging as your material truly needs to be relatable on an international cultural level.

PP: Do you have a message for fans and other aspiring comedians?

DM: The majority of people who want to be comedians never end up getting on stage that first time. That’s probably the scariest moment in this whole journey, so please, just do that first show.

Netball stars in the making AFTER their trials which took place in Chatsworth earlier this month, Pinetown District Schools Netball showed themselves to still be a leading player in the KZN province.

Their balanced teams from all over the KZN district take the lead in promoting netball in schools and they managed to send schools to Singapore and four to national.

They selected U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17 and U18 athletes and of this only 70 players will be chosen to represent KZN at the National All Ages Tournament in June.

ALT Awareness Week took place from March 4 to March 11 with the month being dedicated to Salt Awareness Month.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, together with the National Department of Health and World Action on Salt and Health (WASH), engaged in an awareness campaign on social media, urging the citizens of the country to cut down their salt intake.

According to the WASH website: “We know that no country is on track to achieve a 30% reduction in salt intake by 2025 and no country has reached the World Health Organisation’s recommended intake of less than five grams per day.

“We also know that too much salt in our diet raises blood pressure, which puts us at increased risk of stroke and heart disease. Stroke and heart disease are two of the biggest causes of death and disability worldwide.”

“In some countries, the main source of salt is salt added by the individual, but this doesn’t just come from the salt shaker: salty sauces such as soy sauce are big contributors of salt to diets worldwide. In many countries though, up to 80% of the salt we eat comes from salt already present in processed, packaged food — such as bread, breakfast cereal or ready meals — or salt in restaurant food, cafeteria food and other out of home eateries.

While we may know that salt is bad for our health, if the salt is already in our food we need help to #EatLessSalt!

“It is unacceptable that populations worldwide are burdened with unnecessary deaths.

“It is unacceptable that the next generation face a future of preventable health conditions.

“It is unacceptable that a simple solution has not been actioned by policy makers. It’s time for action!”

With the entirety of March highlighting the effect excessive salt consumption has on a person’s body, ER24 is urging people to cut down on their salt intake if they are guilty of going overboard.

HOW DOES SALT INCREASE BLOOD PRESSURE? “When you eat too much salt or sodium, your body holds on to extra water to wash the salt out,” explains Dr Robyn Holgate, ER24’s Chief Medical Officer. “The added water, as a result of the salt, puts more stress on the heart and the blood vessels and may increase your blood pressure.”

A high salt diet can contribute to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, kidney disease, obesity, etc.

One resident who suffers from hypertension, Sally Reddy, stated that cutting down her salt intake made a difference in her high blood pressure levels.

“When I first got diagnosed with high blood pressure, I was urged by doctors to follow a better diet, and I must say that I have noticed a dramatic difference. I cut out all the junk food and I now read the labels on food items when I go shopping.

“My blood pressure problem may have been hereditary, because my mother also had it, but from this I learned from the error of our ways, and I try to pass on the knowledge of a healthier lifestyle to my children, hoping they will take heed and prevent it from happening to them as well,” said Reddy.

WAYS TO CUT DOWN ON YOUR SALT INTAKE • Cut down on obvious salty foods such as potato chips, bacon and foods packed in brine. When buying tinned vegetables, look for those canned in water • Switch to low salt (low sodium) versions of foods • If you use stock cubes, look for a brand that is low in salt and free from hydrogenated vegetable oil • Cut down the amount of salt you add when cooking • Use herbs and spices to season your food instead of salt • Don’t add salt at the table, or at least taste your food first – it probably won’t need salt • Read food labels when you are shopping. Look out for foods with 0.25g salt or less per 100g (0.1g sodium or less per 100g) or the closest to this • Preparing any meal or food at home can largely reduce your salt intake, as you have control over the preparation methods of your food as well as what you add into the ingredients.

• Pack lunches for children instead of allowing store bought junk food lunches. Provide them with a balanced meal that should contain a whole wheat starch (low GI bread or brown rolls, whole wheat crackers), a lean protein (lean cold meat, eggs or beans) and a fruit • Packed lunches still need to be interesting, and parents need to be sure that portions are appropriate for their child’s age and appetite. Some after-school snack ideas include low-fat yoghurt with fresh fruit or canned fruit in juice, fresh vegetable sticks with cottage cheese or avocado as a dip.

UBERCULOSIS, or TB, is a chronic infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It usually affects the lungs, but can attack other parts of the body.

The disease is mainly spread by breathing in air-borne bacteria from people with active infectious TB. The bacteria can destroy parts of the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

Bacteria can spread to and damage other parts of the body, such as the digestive and urogenital tracts, bones, joints, nervous system, lymph nodes and skin.

This is called extrapulmonary TB, and is far less common.

The disease is characterised by the development of granulomas or tubercles in infected tissues.

TUBERCULOSIS SYMPTOMS · A cough that starts out dry but later produces blood or sputum (thick liquid from deep inside the lungs) · Coughing for longer than a month · Chest pain · Breathing difficulty e.g. shortness of breath · Weakness or fatigue · Loss of weight and appetite · Chills and fevers (the fever may be low and may be intermittent) · Joint pain · Wheezing · Rales (additional sounds made to those of normal breathing) · Excessive sweating, including sweating at night · Hearing loss · Diarrhoea · A persistent lump or lesion · Clubbing of fingers or toes — nails become swollen and feel slightly “pulpy” CALL A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL IF: · You have been exposed to TB, or if symptoms develop · Symptoms persist despite treatment · New symptoms develop While TB is a global problem, undeveloped countries usually have much higher incidences than developed countries.

South Africa has one of the highest reported TB infection rates in the world. In some parts of the world, including in SA, TB is the most important opportunistic infection of people with HIV. PEOPLE AT HIGH RISK FOR DEVELOPING­ ACTIVE TB INCLUDE: · People with HIV infection — because HIV weakens the immune system, people with both TB and HIV infection are at

high risk of developing TB. If you are HIV-positive, you are 30 times more likely to get active TB once infected than someone infected with TB who is HIV-negative.

People with HIV should be TB tested and those with a positive skin test should get HIV tested. This way, someone with both infections can take medicine to reduce the chance of developing TB. Treatment is more difficult as the infecting bacteria are often resistant to therapy, however, among HIV-related diseases, TB is relatively preventable and curable. · Patients receiving certain medical treatments (e.g. corticosteroid treatment, anti-cancer chemotherapy or transplant anti-rejection medication). · People who have been in close contact with someone who has infectious TB. · People who became infected with TB in the last two years. · Babies and young children. · People who inject drugs.

TB vVaccine (BCG) The TB vaccine, BCG, is often given to babies and children in countries where TB is common, although its protective value is debatable. However, it is thought that BCG does offer increased protection against developing TB in parts of the body apart from the lungs (i.e. extra-pulmonary TB).

The vaccine’s efficacy varies throughout the world from zero to 80%, but it is only effective in children, not adults.

In SA, efficacy is about 60% against pulmonary TB. In some countries, BCG is no longer given routinely, since the incidence of TB in those countries is very low. In other parts of the world, where there is a high prevalence of TB, BCG is given to children at birth as part of the routine vaccine schedule. It may also be given at three months, on entering school, and on leaving high school. Adverse effects are rare, however, the vaccine may cause a local reaction in sensitive people.

Children visiting areas with a high risk of TB infection should be offered tuberculin skin testing, and BCG vaccination if the test is negative.

The BCG vaccination should not be given to tuberculin-positive individuals, patients on corticosteroid or immunosuppressive therapy, and other causes of immune deficiency.

If you were vaccinated with BCG, you may have a positive reaction to a TB skin test, due to the BCG vaccine itself or to a real TB infection.

A positive reaction probably means that you have TB infection if: · Your skin test reaction is large · You were vaccinated many years before (the BCG reaction lessens over time) · You have ever spent time with someone with infectious TB · Someone in your family has had TB · You have HIV or another condition that puts you at high risk for TB · Think you might have TB disease · Are from a place where TB is common i.e. Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia (except Japan) · Inject drugs · Live where TB disease is common (homeless shelters, hostels, prisons, some nursing homes) TB TRANSMISSION TB bacteria can stay air-borne for a long time (up to eight hours) in closed spaces such as classrooms, movie theatres and aeroplanes.

They can also remain active in house dust for weeks. This means that risk of transmission is higher in confined spaces with minimal ventilation.

Someone with TB is most likely to spread it to people they spend time with daily, such as family members, friends and co-workers.

While it needs as few as one to 10 bacteria to establish infection, transmission usually only occurs after substantial exposure to someone with active TB. MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT TB (MDR-TB) Most important in TB prevention is for people with infectious TB to take their medicine as prescribed.

If you are taking medication, you need regular check-ups and possibly additional chest X-rays or sputum tests to show whether the medicine is working, and whether you are still infectious.

If the tests show that you still have the

bacteria in your sputum even after a few months of treatment, you may need to take some extra drugs, or change the drugs you are taking.

Detection of early cases and prompt treatment are crucial in controlling the spread of TB. The local health department may need to test people who have spent time with you for TB infection.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to one or more antiTB drugs have emerged.

Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB) is when bacteria become resistant to at least the two first-line drugs,isoniazid and rifampin.

When people fail to complete treatment regimens, or receive incorrect treatment, they may remain infectious. Bacteria in their lungs may develop resistance to certain anti-TB drugs, which then can no longer kill the bacteria.

People they infect will acquire the same drug-resistant strain.

When drug treatment stops, the resistant bacteria will being to multiply and cause active disease again, for which treatment options are limited.

The end result is drug-resistant TB, a form of TB that doesn’t respond to treatment.

Drug-resistant Mycobacterium

tuberculosis strains may emerge due to inconsistent or partial treatment, when patients do not take all their medicines regularly for the required period because they start to feel better, health workers prescribe the wrong drugs or the wrong combination of drugs, or the drug supply is unreliable.

XDR-TB XDR-TB stands for Extensively Drug Resistant TB (also referred to as Extreme Drug Resistance). This is MDRTB that has also become resistant to three or more of the six classes of second-line drugs.

This description of XDR-TB was first used earlier in 2006 after a survey by the World Health Organisation and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

XDR-TB is a serious global concern as there are limited treatment options available for people infected with these strains.

An outbreak of XDR-TB in Kwa­Zulu-Natal in 2006 killed 52 out of 53 people infected.

XDR-TB is of particular concern in areas where the HIV prevalence is high, and is especially difficult to treat in HIV-positive people.

HE New Koleos: it’s “planted”, solid, quiet, comfortable and much nicer than the old one.

The previous generation never sold very well in South Africa, with the last few easing off showroom floors by mid-2016.

Carried over to the new model is the Alliance’s 2.5-litre QR25DE petrol engine, now with more torque at lower revs; the X-Tronic CVT gearbox, presently boasting seven virtual gears rather than the original five and, for the allwheel drive version, iDrive 4x4 off X-Trail. It is still built at the Renault-Samsung factory in Busan, South Korea. And, like other brands from that country, build quality has improved remarkably over the past ten years.

We were tempted to compare its fit and finish with cars from the German Big Three but knew that some readers might blow gaskets because certain things cannot be said out loud. It is very good, though. And the new car looks every inch

the solid, muscular and handsome D-segment SUV that Renault was aiming for.

It is the brand’s new range-topper, so forget budget-beating Dusters and Stepways for a moment; think European, think Clio.

Briefly, the new range consists of three models in two trim levels, Expression and Dynamique; two drive trains, 4x2 and awd; one engine and one transmission.

Expression offers 4x2 drive, auto-on halogen lights with cornering foglamps, 17inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, black fabric seats with manual controls, rear parking sensors, powered windows and mirrors, automatic dual zone air conditioning with ducting to the rear and a temperature controlled cup holder, extra grab handles, a seven-inch touch screen, Arkamys 3D sound with app mirroring via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (now downloadable from Google Play Store), voice commands and the usual Bluetooth and plugs. The boot has grown from 450 litres to 464.

with EBA, EBD, ESC; traction control; hill start assist; ISOFix mountings; cruise control with speed limiter and side impact beams.

Dynamique offers a choice of 4x2 or awd and ups the ante. Try LED headlamps, 18inch alloy wheels, leather seats with electric adjustment on both front chairs (a R12 000 option on Expression), additional parking sensors front and side, reversing camera, blind spot detection, keyless entry and start, tyre pressure monitoring, illuminated sun visor mirrors, an 8.7” capacitive (more sensitive) touch screen, LED dashboard with ambient lighting in five colours and auto-fold for the outside mirrors.

Colours — Ultra Silver, Metallic Grey, Metallic Black, Mineral Beige, Cosmo Blue and Solid White — the only “standard” colour. The others attract an option charge of R2 522.

All-wheel drive made easy going of gravel roads turned into quagmires by heavy rain the day before.

The CVT is an acquired taste unfortunately.

It’s co-operative when driving sensibly and fuelconsciously, with manual override available for emergencies or sporty motoring. Traditionalists still prefer a “normal” automatic though.

KZN dominates at biggest ever SA Canoe Polo Champs T

HE 2019 South African Canoe Polo Championships were held at Shongweni Dam recently with the KwaZulu-Natal men’s side and women’s team claiming the respective titles after the toughest competition on record.

The KwaZulu-Natal A and Gauteng A men’s final was an incredibly tight game, with extra time needed to get a result. In the end, KZN managed to edge out Gauteng 4-3 to finish as the 2019 National Canoe Polo champions.

The Western Cape Senior team took the bronze medal position.

The KZN ladies took the win in the women’s division with the KZN U21 team finishing second. The Knysna girls team took third, narrowly losing out the KZN ladies in the earlier semifinal, showing the depth of the current ladies’ squad.

The U16 division had five teams taking part. The games were well supported by crowds on the banks, with each game being played like a final. The Gauteng Barracudas took the gold with the Stellenbosch Development Team in second

and Epworth One in third.

Due to there not being enough time to have a separate division for the U21 men, Open ladies and U21 ladies’ teams, they were combined into one division.

Each division had its own set of finals after the group stages, and without exception, all the divisions were extremely competitive and often the final positions were decided by a single goal.

The Western Cape U21 side was the only team to retain its title, with KZN U21 taking second and Gauteng U21 in third.

The event organisers had to map out a second pitch on the Shongweni Dam because of the huge entry for the event.

There were eventually 65 games played with 19 teams and 129 players, which made it the biggest ever SA championships.

The organising committee was delighted to report that the discipline of Canoe polo continues to grow year-on-year and there was a 20% increase on entries from last year.
