OCAL singer Carmen Rodrigues (35) might have discovered her passion for singing 10 years ago, but it was only in 2016 that she finally followed through with her dreams when she went to New York and competed in Talent America.

At the competition, Rodrigues wowed the panel of 15 judges; who ranged from Broadway professionals to television scouts, to representatives from Sony Records; and she went on to win in the singer songwriter division for a song she called Pure. She was also placed first for the two covers she performed.

Speaking more on her passion for music, Rodrigues said: “To be honest, the main reason I really wanted to start a career in singing is not just that it made me happy and that I get to sing for a living and meet amazing people, it’s that I get to help people through music.

“Music in general is such an international language and the day the artist Adele came into my life was the day I realised what music and lyrics can do for me and for what I was going through. I just wanted to do the same for everyone.

Now I’m doing just that and having an amazing time as well.”

Rodrigues has been singing solo professionally for five years, and with The Carmen Rodrigues Band for just under a year.

“The journey together has been such an incredible one and I am super grateful to band members Craig [Tavares], Chris [Krause] and Carl [Bense] for being a part of it all and the hard work it takes to learn all the originals.”

Rodrigues launched her debut album, Let it All Go, in September.

“The title of this album says it all.

“I used music and writing to help release all of my emotions that were stuck inside me and holding me back from everything.

“I’ve had a few bad relationship experiences and it really messed me up emotionally and mentally. But, I had to help [my] listeners also realise that they can get through anything as well.

“My songs all have a motivational twist in them to show that you are good enough and you have the power to stand in your truth,” she said.

On her favourite track from the album, Rodrigues said: “Oh golly, I don’t know how to pick just one as they all come from a very personal space and

are a part of who I am. I guess they are like children, you can’t choose your favourite child, but you have a deep love for each of them as different as they all are individually. But, last night at band

practice, I fell in love with Run Around all over again; what a beautiful song.

But, if anything, I always say that my song Pure is my national anthem as it celebrates myself as a strong, powerful individual that has faced so many demons and come out the other side in victory. I am enough.”

Rodrigues states that, together with her band, they were blessed and very grateful to have performed on several platforms, such as on the White Mountain Festival’s main stage and at the Blues Festival. The band have also been on tour with Parable Fifteen, which saw them travel to Ladysmith, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The first stage the band graced was that of the Keg and Trout in Hillcrest, at a Battle of the Jam, where they competed against 16 other bands from KwaZulu-Natal and won.

On her favourite memory of her career thus far, Rodrigues said: “With all that has been done already up until now it’s so hard to just choose one. I mean, I’ve experienced tears while songwriting, breaking down when having to dig really deep into those hard moments, and then rejoicing them into the recording process and then into the amazing songs that they are to me; to being on

beautiful stages like White Mountain and Rockwood Theatre and feeling how mind-blowing the sound was for us as a band and giggling like little kids at the excitement backstage; to road tripping to Johannesburg and Pretoria for our first in-house radio interview and TV show interview and performance; to meeting people from all walks of life who said how much my songs have touched them and helped them; to the ultimate moment of the success of the album launch.”

Speaking on her future, Rodrigues said: “Realistically, right now I aim to keep growing.

“I am planning now to venture out to as many venues that will have me perform [as I can] and to one day hopefully get to go on tour or open up for SA bands such as the Parlotones and Shekhinah so that I can grow and learn and also increase my fanbase.”

On what’s next for her, the singer said: “Just to keep my head down and work really hard and play as much as I can and gain as much as exposure as possible.”

Twini cleanup sees two tons of waste removed from the beach CLEAN Surf Project recently held a cleanup at the Umbogintwini Beach in Athlone Park.

Speaking on the cleanup, the project said: “Due

to persistent rainfall last week, an incredible amount of litter washed up at Umbogintwini Beach and Rivermouth; really, really heartbreak-

ing to see how much waste makes its way from informal settlements (due to a lack of service delivery), stormwater drains and canals into our rivers, straight into the ocean..scattering our treasured coastline with tons and tons of waste.”

The project stated that the majority of items collected were day-to-day household items as well as nappies, car parts, shoes and flip flops, toys, broken glass, needles, and numerous dead animals, among other items.

The Clean Surf Project team would like to thank each and every volunteer who assisted in the successful cleanup operation, removing more than two tons of waste on the day.

Working hand in hand with eThekwini Municipality Beach Management and Beach Cleansing Staff, that assisted with many helping

hands as well as machinery to remove as much litter as possible, the cleanup was a success.

“Big thumbs up to Social Waste Management that took care of removing one ton bags filled with plastic bottles and polystyrene as well as rubbish bags in the attempt to recycle as much waste as possible, preventing it all from being taken to the landfill site instead,” added the project.

ITH Black Friday taking place on November 29, which is followed by the festive season which sees stokvel payouts and 13th cheques being issued, SAPS would like to warn the community about the dangers of carrying excessive cash on their person.

Speaking further on this, Captain Charlene Van Der Spuy, corporate communications officer at Amanzimtoti SAPS, said: “It is almost that time of the year where members of the community are looking forward to the festive season and spending their hard-earned money with their loved ones. Regrettably, this is also the time in which criminal elements will attempt to continue with their evil plans, including committing crimes such as robberies.”

As a precautionary measure, police in the province would like to caution members of the community, particularly those who have been saving money through stokvel groupings or so-

cieties, to avoid carrying a lot of cash.

They state that two crime types remain prevalent. In the first case, victims are followed out of banks after a cash withdrawal has been made. In some of the incidences, consumers are followed after withdrawing money at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to their residences, places of work, vehicles, or any other place where it is easy to rob them.

“It is apparent that, in the case of bank branches, ‘spotters’ still operate and communicate the victims’ description to accomplices who wait outside the bank.

“Small business owners are also at risk, particularly when drawing cash to pay weekly wages,” said the captain.

“In most robberies, robbers are armed and will resort to violence if the victim resists. These kinds of robberies are not limited to urban areas, but also occur in rural communities.

“There are safer ways to do transactions, such as internet transfers or mobile banking, instead of carrying large amounts of cash,” she said.

Members of the community are urged to protect themselves and reduce the risk of becoming victims.

SAPS PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC: · Carry as little cash as possible. · Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically (consult your bank to find out about other available options). · Consider making use of cellphone banking or internet transfers or ATMs to do your banking. · Never make your bank visits public, even to people close to you. · Vary the days and times on which you deposit cash. · Do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are standing in the bank queue. · Avoid carrying moneybags, briefcases or openly displaying your deposit receipt book. · It is advisable to identify another branch nearby that you can visit to ensure that your banking pattern is not easily recognisable or detected. · If the amount of cash you are regularly deposit-

ing is increasing as your business grows, consider using the services of a cash management company. · Refrain from giving wages to your contract or casual labourers in full view of the public; rather make use of wage accounts that can be provided by your bank. · Consider arranging for electronic transfers of wages to contract or casual labourers’ personal bank accounts.

TIPS FOR STOKVEL GROUPINGS: · Refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high-risk days (e.g.

Monday after month end). · Ensure persons depositing club cash contributions or making withdrawals are accompanied by another club member. · A stokvel savings club or burial society can arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s account instead of collecting cash contributions. · Arrange for the club’s payout to be electronically transferred into each club member’s personal account or accounts of their choice.

HE South African National Blood Services (SANBS) recently held their Media Breakfast at the Coastlands Hotel in Musgrave.

Attendees at the event were addressed by Zone Donor Manager Phelani Mkhize, Regional Marketing Manager Sifiso Khoza, and Chief Marketing Officer Silungile Mlambo. Special guest Gregory Naidu related his tale on how SANBS and blood donations saved his life after he suffered a car crash a few years ago.

SANBS also elaborated on their latest project, Blood Wings, which details how SANBS achieved reaching rural areas that require urgent blood using a drone.

The organisation is currently urgently calling on blood group O and other donors to donate

blood in order to meet the demand.

They state that despite their scheduled blood drives yielding a significant amount of blood collections, and minimising the effects of shortages, there has been a high demand of blood in hospitals which leaves group O blood stocks low.

Speaking further on this, Mlambo said: “We are experiencing a high demand of blood from hospitals and are in serious need of blood donations across the country. Our group O blood stocks are approaching a low. We are appealing to all South Africans to donate a unit of blood in aid of those who may need blood or blood products during this period.”

According to SANBS, group O is considered to be the universal blood group as anyone, regardless of blood type, can receive type O- without risking a transfusion reaction.

Ramblers ready for their next challenge ON Sunday, November 24, the Toti Ramblers will be hiking through the Everton Conservancy to the Everton Waterfall, also known as Gillitt’s Falls, from the Acutt’s road bridge.

Speaking on the walk, Hylton Laue of the Toti Ramblers said: “It is a fairly easy hike but bring a hiking stick. It is approximately 3 km, with an out

and back loop along the Molweni River. We will stop for a short break at the falls. The bird life is lovely and most of the hike is through a forest.

“Once we are back at the Acutt’s road bridge, the ‘energetic’ members can continue with the trail towards Porcupine Falls and then loop back to the Acutts road bridge, a distance of approxi-

mately 4 km.This trail runs along the Molweni River in places and is also through a lovely forest,”he said.

Entrance fee is a donation of R20 per person towards the Everton Conservancy.

Hikers are requested to bring along sunscreen, hats, chairs, and their own picnic.

The hikers will meet at the Lords and Legends parking area for lifts with a 7 am departure and travel in convoy. An indemnity form must please be completed, if not already done, so have your ID number available.

Hospice grateful for donation of medication KHANYA Hospice recently received a donation from the DisChem Foundation.

Speaking on the goods received, CEO of Hospice Neil McDonald said: “We are not government supported and we have to rely on donations and the goodwill of people. This medication will go a long way, as most of our patients are not on medical aid and do not have the means to get this, or are being sent home from hospitals with no medi-

cation. We gladly help where we can but our arms are only that long, and our means only that limited.”

Khanya Hospice offers free palliative nursing care to patients with life-threatening illnesses and offer support to their families.

To pay or not to pay?

TIMOTHY MOLOBI WITH the school holidays starting on December 4, a colleague sought my take on whether she should pay for her child’s transport to school next month.

I mean there are only three school days in the new month and her dilemma is whether she should pay for the month’s transport or not.

I am in the same predicament, as my children also use school transport and I know the vehicle owner is already banking on me giving him money for December — as he has always asked me. Nna, I thought, it is a pay-asyou-go kind of arrangement.

The situation is made even worse because the children are hardly at school this month as well, as they opt to stay at home after completing their exams.

The challenge is, more often, that the transport owners don’t tell the parents beforehand whether December is included in the arrangement.

But as parents we are also to blame because we don’t ask questions in advance as we don’t think properly ahead of time.

So it becomes a problem when the transport owners demand their dues and we feel they are greedy.

Do we even think or know what we are paying for?

I doubt it.

The same applies for other school holidays, particularly in July, when our children spend the first two weeks of the month at home and yet we are expected to pay for the entire month, even though they use the service for only the last two weeks.

You see, paying in advance is both good

and bad for both parties.

We are expected to pay upfront and if you fail to do so your children will be stranded as the drivers will leave them behind.

This works well for owners as they have us where they want us. But tell them about pro rata, as in this case, and they will not budge.

All they know is that payments — in full — must be made, irrespective of how many times they ferry our children in a month.

Who is to blame in this case?

To be honest, they also have bills to pay, whether the children are being transported or not, and more often than not, their only means of income comes from transporting children to school.

Are we fair on them when we don’t pay because they will not be rendering their full services, or is it a case of they are on their

own?

I remember my late uncle used to buy a monthly bus ticket even during the months he was not going to work the entire month.

It was cheaper to buy a monthly ticket than a weekly one, irrespective of how many weeks there were in a month.

As it is, I already know the transport owner will be knocking on my door asking for somethingnyana for December.

I have done it before — out of goodwill — and will probably do it again.

But is it the way to go or is he really entitled to my money?

By the way, I have not yet responded to my colleague.

I guess our circumstances will be different.

I would say she must go with her conscience as there is no right or wrong answer.

It’s her call.

Why are the workers the only ones being sacrificed?

FERIAL HAFFAJEE I’M with Finance Minister Tito Mboweni who says that South African Airways is a vanity that our near-bankrupt country can’t afford.

But if the government has decided that our national self-esteem is somehow tied up with having an airline, then why are workers the only ones having to make the sacrifice to keep it flying?

SAA, which has cancelled all flights for today and tomorrow, is on the verge of a nasty strike after its acting CEO Zuks Ramasia announced earlier in the week that it may need to chop up to one in five workers.

Unions are up in arms, with both yellowbib and the cabin crew workers threatening the “mother of all strikes” today. Its pilots, meanwhile, have also threatened to strike if the government does not resolve the airline’s restructuring plan.

I hardly fly SAA any longer because it’s too expensive, and a lack of investment in online bookings means FlySafair and others are faster and cheaper options.

But when you do use the national carrier, you can’t fault the staff. Impeccably polite, I often find SAA check-in staff far better trained and more service-oriented than Comair, which bills itself as customer-focused but often is not.

With better management, SAA is more punctual than it has been in years. The staff want to do well.

Throughout the Marie Antoinette-like era when former president Jacob Zuma put the manager of his personal charity, Dudu Myeni, in charge of the flag carrier, the staff were canaries in a coal mine.

They have told of how tenders were diverted and how Myeni brought in her own people to push funds and contracts to her cronies.

Her diva-like behaviour on and off planes was legend. Flowing about in kaftans, she bullied and pushed and tried to get contracts cancelled in order to give new ones to colleagues.

The former head of treasury at SAA, Cynthia Stimpel, is writing a book about that era and it may answer many questions about how the airline came to be where it is today.

The price is now being paid.

Myeni, who is facing delinquent director proceedings initiated by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, and her appointees, are alleged to have connived on everything from fleet leasing arrangements to catering and fuel contracts, and even tried to interfere in apron services.

Bidvest blew the whistle on how Myeni and another board members tried to shake them down and out of their aviation services contracts if Myeni and company were not cut in.

It was real banana republic stuff. And the era explains why SAA is out of money and relying on the public purse. Corrupt contracts were allegedly secured at rates often far exceeding market rates, with profits used to pay backhanders.

Yet Myeni is holed up somewhere safe.

Her job is not on the line. Her income is secure. Her family is not threatened by the job loss of a breadwinner.

Neither is Zuma’s.

But hundreds of workers could now lose their jobs. SAA should instead be slicing out the management that allowed the looting to happen, many of whom are appointees from the Myeni era. It should be cutting everybody employed in or in charge of procurement.

The reform and restructuring of stateowned companies is not possible without justice.

It would be easier for the flag carrier’s new managers to make the changes they need to make if Myeni were on trial with the companies who won contracts by means both unfair and foul.

It would also be easier if Zuma was not allowed to play fast and loose with the judicial commission of inquiry, where he has refused to appear this week due to illness and is instead tweeting about this and that.

maintenance tasks the worse it gets, which means it’s likely to cost you more both in terms of time and money than it would have if you addressed it either as a matter of course, or at the first sign of a problem, says Lee Clarke, property consultant at Leapfrog Tyger Hills.

Clarke says maintenance is an integral part of owning a property and it’s an ongoing process. A property is an asset - likely one of the biggest you’ll ever own - and it is also important to protect and care for your asset, which is why property simply cannot be ignored or neglected.

The Leapfrog team has identified a number of property maintenance concerns that are often overlooked, but easily taken care of. Make sure you can tick the following off your list this summer season: 1. Check your aircon “Summer in South Africa is hot, hot, hot and just like our Northern Hemisphere counterparts can’t do winter without central heating, we struggle to do summer without fans and air-conditioning. Make sure you can keep things cool by checking that your aircon is clean and in good working order.”

Also test it to ensure it is working as efficiently as possible, and get it serviced by a professional if necessary. You don’t want to endure 38-degree heat simply because you didn’t think to check the appliance.

2. Roof repair You’re fortunate to have a roof over your head, but that roof also needs to be inspected regularly to check for signs of leaks and damages. Nothing raises the metaphorical roof quite like problems up there.

“Roof problems are among the most expensive you’re likely to encounter on the home maintenance

budget, so prevention is always preferable to cure,” says Clarke.

He says one should check for loose or missing tiles on tiled roofs and look out for blistering or bubbles on flat roofs.

“You also want to ensure the roof is clear of debris and that there are no tree branches making contact with the roof,” says Clarke.

3. Keep your sanitaryware in good order “South Africa is a water scarce country and while most of us try our utmost to save water wherever we can, we do sometimes need to ‘use’ water to keep the sanitaryware in good working order.”

“It’s a good idea to run water in baths and showers that don’t get used regularly and to flush toilets in unused spaces every now and again as this helps to prevent grime from building up, which could cause blockages,” Clarke recommends.

Showerheads also need to be removed and cleaned every couple of months to clean the residue build-up inside. Keeping it clean helps with water pressure, which is ultimately a way of reducing water consumption.

4. Clean the garage The benefits and importance of spring cleaning your home is well documented, but the garage is a space that is often neglected in these efforts. “For so many of us, the garage is little more than a dumping ground and storage facility, which means we tend to not clean and care for it in the same way we do the rest of the property,” says Clarke.

The walls, windows, floor and roof of the garage need to be inspected, maintained and repaired like any other part of the house. What’s often more important is to deep clean the garage and create order by finding a suitable

“October was Breast Cancer Month and the woman were all advised to go for testing, and now,

this ‘Movember’, we are encouraging the men to go.

“The men are growing beards and moustaches and, when they are having friends or family over for a meal or a braai, will ask them for a good donation which will be handed over to Khanya Hospice at the end of November when the men will shave off their beards and moustaches again” added McDonald­.

‘Your blood stem cells can help save a life’ THE RATE of patients diagnosed with blood diseases is on the rise; sadly 75% of these patients are under the age of 25. For most of them a blood stem cell transplant is their only hope of cure.

Lenmed eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is partnering with The Sunflower Fund to host a Blood Stem Cell Donor Drive to recruit well informed and committed donors onto The Sunflower Fund Registry on November 27 from 9.30 am

“Leukaemia, aplastic anaemia and immune deficiencies are among the few blood conditions that we are treating in our practice and can be managed with a blood stem cell transplant.

“Stem cells make up the component that your immune system needs to function and during the transplant your body is rescued with an infusion of healthy blood

stem cells”, explains Dr Keshnie Moodley, treating specialist paediatrician and haematologist at KIDZCAN, based at Lenmed eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre.

The chances of finding this match is 1:100 000 and the best chance of a match is within your same ethnic background.

There is only a 25% chance that a sibling will be a match. The remaining 75% chance depends on an unrelated matching donor being

found.

Patients of colour and mixed ethnicity around the world are at a disadvantage due to the underrepresentation of black, coloured, Indian and Asian donors in the global donor pool. As such, The Sunflower Fund proactively creates awareness and education about blood diseases as well as the process involved in becoming a blood stem cell donor.

Donation aids hospice THE Dischem Foundation once again made a donation to the Khanya Hospice.

Sister Sue van Rijsbergen said: “Once again, a big thank you to the Dischem Foundation for a wonderful donation of medical supplies to Khanya Hospice. This is a tremendous help in our patient-care programme. We use wound dressings (which are very expensive) and painkillers etc., and are able to help some of our patients that do not have. Khanya Hospice offers free palliative nursing care but it is not free for us to provide.”

Terminal to put port on the map M

SC Cruises through KwaZulu Cruise Terminal (Pty) Ltd (KCT) has broken ground on the construction of the new, worldclass Durban Cruise Terminal, which will put the port on the map as a crucial role-player in growing the South African cruising industry.

The company has invested in excess of R200 million into the development of the terminal, at a time where the country requires a boost to their tourism infrastructure in order to accommodate more local and international holidaymakers.

Ross Volk, MSC Cruises South Africa Managing Director and Director of KCT, explained the undeniably positive impact that the new Durban Cruise Terminal will have on the South African tourism industry, saying: “The

multi-user terminal will make Durban an even more desirable destination for cruise ships from all over the world, which will substantially boost tourism numbers, create thousands of jobs and lead to supplier development.”

The terminal is expected to be operational from January 2021, and is set to attract global players in the cruising industry, subsequently boosting the national economy.

MSC Cruises’ commitment to the country was recently recognised at the South African Investment Conference, where the company received a special acknowledgement from President Ramaphosa for their investment in excess of R200 million into the country’s tourism infrastructure. Similarly, the KZN government recently bestowed a certificate of recognition on the com-

pany for their continued investment into South Africa’s tourism, shipping and logistics sectors.

The MSC Group has also invested in South Africa’s skills development.

November saw the opening of its Shosholoza Ocean Academy in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry.

The academy will provide free three-month training courses for young South Africans and those who successfully complete the training course will become eligible for employment onboard MSC Cruises’ ships around the world. This will stimulate job creation and combat South Africa’s unemployment rate, resulting in 3 000 to 5 000 jobs and bringing about R5 billion rand worth of salaries back to the country. — Supplied.

Former Shark joins the ‘herd’ E

LEVEN years after the historic event that launched their organisation, The Cows will field another huge entry for the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg cycle race on Sunday that will include former Sharks winger Cedric Mkhize making his first appearance in the black-and-white colours of The Cows, and a tenth anniversary of the Apocalypse Cows, who ride the route twice in aid of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Mkhize’s rugby career was cut short by a car crash in 2007 that left him paralysed, but the likeable Durbanite has not let that slow his sporting passion, and he has become an accomplished hand-cyclist.

Mkhize says that it all started with a vital shift in his own attitude.

“I have had to deal with a lot [of] different challenges,” he said. “After some time grappling with them they became opportunities; opportunities to better myself mentally, emotionally and physically to achieve some personal goals.

“I have done a couple of cycle races in the past couple of years, mainly to challenge myself physically and test my abilities.”

The 94,7km route around Johannesburg will be a significant test for Mkhize, who completed the 65 km ride at the recent Tsogo Sun Amashova in his hometown of Durban. It was there that he connected with stalwart Cow Gordon Reid, who persuaded him to join The Cows and take on the Joburg classic for CHOC. “I have done a lot for me and a lot less for others. This one is about making a difference for the people who need it most,” said Mkhize.

“The biggest motivator for taking on this mammoth challenge is that not only will it be a personal achievement but I’ll be making a difference for children with cancer and their families,” he added, imploring his fans to add their donations via his new GivenGain account with The Cows.
