Dickie Govender (61), and his wife Saroj (59), were travelling on the R102 from Shakaskraal to Tongaat when the occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire on them in the Frasers area, outside Tongaat, on Saturday night, January 13. Govender died at the scene and his wife, a Grade R teacher at Seatides Combined, was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital where she later died. Head of TransNatal Flying Squad Unit Suren Balram said the bullets riddled their car and it veered off the road, coming to

a stop in a sugar-cane plantation. “Both husband and wife suffered multiple gunshots. The suspects fired on them with AK47 rifles.” Spokesperson for Dolphin Coast Taxi Association Sunshine Mthiyane said taxi drivers and owners were still recovering from shock. “He was the vice secretary and founder of [our] association. The exact reason for the killing is not clear. We are concerned about the death of Govender.” Mthiyane said there were issues within the association that could have been the result of the killing. “We formed a committee to encourage our members to register the log books of their vehicles. Some of them were unhappy about it.
