ANDILE SITHOLE HE murder of a taxi boss and “founding member” of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association has left members of the association in shock and fearing for their lives.

Dickie Govender (61), and his wife Saroj (59), were travelling on the R102 from Shakaskraal to Tongaat when the occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire on them in the Frasers area, outside Tongaat, on Saturday night, January 13.

Govender died at the scene and his wife, a Grade R teacher at Seatides Combined, was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital where she later died. Head of TransNatal Flying Squad Unit Suren Balram said the bullets riddled their car and it veered off the road, coming to

a stop in a sugar-cane plantation.

“Both husband and wife suffered multiple gunshots. The suspects fired on them with AK47 rifles.”

Spokesperson for Dolphin Coast Taxi Association Sunshine Mthiyane said taxi drivers and owners were still recovering from shock.

“He was the vice secretary and founder of [our] association. The exact reason for the killing is not clear.

We are concerned about the death of Govender.”

Mthiyane said there were issues within the association that could have been the result of the killing.

“We formed a committee to encourage our members to register the log books of their vehicles. Some of them were unhappy about it.

“Govender was at the forefront encouraging everyone. There was some kind of “animosity” in the association, forcing other members [of the committee] to drag their feet [in the matter] fearing for their lives.”

Santaco secretary Bongani Mkhwanazi said the incident is not related to taxi violence.

“At this stage it is still muddy to find out the exact cause of the attack. We had not received any complaints from the association. However, there were other issues, but they were dealt with and we had a meeting with the members of the association. We advised them to report their concerns to our officers. We strongly condemn the killings in the taxi industry.”

Mkhwanazi advised taxi drivers to be the eyes and ears at grassroots level and report suspicious activities to the police and their leaders.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Govender family, friends and members of the association.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.”

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said two counts of murder were opened at Tongaat Police Station.

“No arrest has been made at this stage and the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.”

Man appears in court for murder of Mandeni chief MXOLISI MNGADI A 38-YEAR-OLD man, suspected of killing a Mandeni chief in 2016, remains in custody following his court appearance on Monday, the Hawks said.

He briefly appeared at the Eshowe Magistrate's Court, where he heard he will remain in custody until Monday, January 22, said KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

He faced charges of murder and attempted murder.

Mhlongo said the suspect's name could not be released yet.

“We are waiting for the identification parade, then we can release it,” he said.

Chief Linda Mathonsi (58) was shot in the head and neck on the evening of December 5, 2016, around 6pm, while travelling with his daughter (25), who was also shot on the arm.

They had been travelling in the

Chappies area of Sundumbili in Mandeni when a car drove up alongside their car and an occupant began firing at them.

The incident took place shortly after Mathonsi had picked his daughter up near a library in the area.

“The chief died at the scene, and his daughter was taken to hospital for medical attention.

“The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle and a case of murder was opened at Sundumbili police station,” Mhlongo said.

He said the Hawks Durban Organised Crime unit had arrested the suspect on Friday, January 12.

“The case docket was transferred to the Hawks for investigation.

“On Friday, the members pounced on the suspect at his residence.

“He was then placed under arrest and charged accordingly,” he said.

Mother, son murdered THE bodies of a mother and son were found in a fresh grave by police and community members in the Esidakeni area near Mandeni on Saturday.

KwaZulu­Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa strongly condemned the killing of the woman identified as Zoe Buthel­ ezi (49) and her son, Mthunzi Zulu (19).

“Our detectives will work around the clock to make sure the suspect allegedly involved in this brutal killing is brought to book and face the full mighty of the law. We also appeal to people to resolve their differences peacefully rather than involved themselves in fighting which lead to killings,” he said.

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant­Colonel Thu­ lani Zwane, on Saturday, January 13 Nyoni police were called to attend to a case of a missing woman and her son at the Esidakeni area.

“The community became suspicious as they were last seen on Tuesday, 9 January after they had an argument

with a family member at their house.”

He said when police arrived on Sat­ urday, they searched for the missing mother and her son.

“Community members also assisted the members and while they were at a relative’s house who was last seen with the victims, the members saw a fresh grave and became suspicious.

“The members and the community started to dig the said grave and found the bodies of the two missing people.

“The body of the woman was chopped into pieces and wrapped in plastic.”

Two counts of murder was opened at Nyoni police station for further inves­ tigation.

The relative who is suspected to be involved in this matter is still at large.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have information about his whereabouts to provide information the police or the Crime Stop number 0860010111.

KwaDukuza Mall workers down tools over pay dispute NKOSINATHI DUBE

A

GROUP of disgruntled contract workers at the KwaDukuza Mall Development embarked on a stay-away and blockaded the street adjacent to the construction site with burning tyres on Friday, January 12.

The striking workers, who are employed under a local sub-contractor through their representative, who did not want to be named, said their employer hasn’t been paying his employees and as a result they stopped working.

“As you know if an employer employs you there is an agreement that is reached about the pay date and the amount of wages, but in this case it has been the direct opposite,” he said.

Local law enforcements were on the scene to monitor the situation as the relevant stakeholders, including the main contractor, project manager the local sub-contractor were locked in a meeting at the KwaDukuza Municipality council chambers in an attempt to resolve the situation.

RANSNET Freight Rail, in partner­ ship with various government de­ partments and the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM), launched the state of readiness programme for the arrival of the Phelophepha Healthcare Train at the KDM council chambers on Friday, January 12.

The mobile clinic is part of Transnet’s social responsibility initi­ ative that began in 1994 with three coaches which has since been extended to 16.

The train will be categorised into four clinics, which will include an eye clinic, general health care for the public, dental clinic and psychology clinic and also offered on board will be cancer screenings.

According to Transnet Freight Rail’s Avasha Gopaulsingh the service on the train is free and will cater for 10 000 to

15 000 people a week.

“The service will be on a first come first serve basis and free on all of the four clinics which we will be rendering to the people of KwaDukuza.

“Only when patients want pre­ scribed medicine and in optometry clinic will they be required to pay R30 for a pair of reading glasses as we will be also be doing eye tests and screen­ ings,” said Goupalsingh.

The train will arrive in KwaDukuza on February 3 and will depart on the February 16 and will be located at the Stanger Train Statio.

People can access it through the Transnet deport gate.

The Phelophepha Healthcare Train will benefit the people of iLembe Dis­ trict in terms of health care needs.

Among departments who are part of the initiative is Cogta, Social Develo­ ment, Health, SAPS and KwaDukuza Community Safety.

Melville Mill’s 40th anniversary reunion

UGUST 31 will mark 40 years since the closure of the Melville Sugar Mill.

To commemorate the closure of the mill, the Melville Reunion Committee will be hosting a 40th anniversary reunion on September 8 at the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall.

Last year, more than 1 400 ex-Melville residents attended the reunion at the same venue.

Tears flowed as people met each other for this first time in almost 35 years.

Executive member of the reunion committee, Kumarin Muniapphen said the mill closed on August 31, 1978.

“In those days, everyone who lived in the Melville barracks, like one big happy family.

“One thing that really touched my heart was, if one of the residents had an event at their home, no one needed an invitation, the entire community would be there, and that too helping.

“If someone was going through a difficult period, the entire community would be there to rally around them.”

Mandeni mayor congratulates matric top achievers M

ANDENI Municipality mayor Sphesihle Zulu applauded and acknowledged matric top achievers at the Sibusisiwe Hall boardroom on Wednesday, January 10.

Of the three top achievers, Nkanyiso Mhlongo from Thokoza section in Ward 7 matriculated at Impoqabulungu High School and intends to study medicine at Wits.

Sandile Ngubande from Matsheketsheni area in Ward 5 and Ndumiso Sikhakhane from Masomonco area in Ward 10 both matriculated at uDumo High School.

Although they matriculated in the same school they will pursue different careers.

Ngubande wants to study law at the University of Zululand and Sikhakhane intends to study pharmacy at UKZN. Mhlongo obtained seven A’s while both Ndumiso Skhakhane and Sandile Ngubande attained six distinctions each.

“I would like to congratulate you all for hoisting Mandeni’s flag high and also putting Mandeni on the map.

“Hard work pays and every pupil can achieve this if they put more focus on their studies. I would also like to extend my thanks to the parents for allocating time for these pupils to study and I will be failing in my duty if I do not thank the pupils for showing dedication to their studies and refraining from drugs and alcohol in school. “uDumo High School, where I matriculated back in the day, has changed things as it achieved a higher pass rate percentage as compared to last year and this also needs to be applauded,” said Zulu.

Zulu advised the pupils to go and represent Mandeni and their families in the institutions of higher learning and cautioned them not to get involved in drugs and alcohol.

“For now, please ensure that you stick to your studies and the rest will follow,” he said.

Blythedale Beach Residents Association says thank you O

N behalf of the community of Blythedale we wish to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of KwaDukuza Municipality Community Safety and the SAPS who worked tirelessly to control and manage the many visitors who came to Blythedale during the festive season.

It was noticeable that the number of day visitors and those who attended the beach festival were less than in previous years and it was encouraging to see an increase in the number of families who came to picnic and enjoy themselves at the beach.

The car park facilities and the beach are there for all to appreciate and enjoy.

Our appreciation is also extended to the KDM cleaning staff - as usual they did a great job.

It was also encouraging to see the co-operation of the various security companies operating in Blythedale with Community Safety and SAPS. Their combined efforts resulted in a greater sense of safety and security within the village and an incident free festive season.

We reiterate our very grateful thanks to everyone involved in this operation over the 2017 festive season.

THE current proposal for free tertiary education lacks important detail. However, the principle is that if you are poor and your family income is be­ low a certain threshold, you would qualify for fee­ free education at university level. (Dare I ask about TVET colleges, where it is better to be a water technician or electrician than an engineer?)

You don’t have to pay between R33 000 and R73 000 (which is what average annual fees are) if you are poor. This is a very substantial amount for a poor household, which may well have more than one student eligible to study beyond matric. There are, however, costs in addition to fees, e.g. food, accommodation, transport and clothing, which are not accommodated in the “fee­free” offer at this stage. Students are found sleeping in libraries be­ cause they cannot afford accommodation.

This is a government policy choice, and it should not be landed on the tertiary institutions to man­ age or implement. The government must shoulder its responsibilities. The Department of Higher Edu­ cation had better step up beyond the vague com­ ments of Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize to date. We await eagerly the outcome of her discussions with the heads of the tertiary institutions.

The EFF would serve the cause much better if it desisted from causing mayhem at universities and directed its efforts towards the real centre of re­ sponsibility; namely, the government.

Why make institutions carry the responsibility for wild promises made by the head of the govern­ ment? They would do well to make this a major plank for engagement in Parliament too.

The ANC, too, should act to manage the conse­ quences of the statement foisted upon the nation by the man who it is retaining as president of the country.

Mostly because I’ve been observing the world with bleary­eyed apathy, high from a near­lethal dose of melancholy as I grapple with the sense that those cho­ sen to lead have not the foggiest clue of the responsi­ bility, or respect for their position and the people who put them there, to make a difference.

Like a parched Western Cape dam in the summer heat I’ve gazed with disdain upon those in power who continue to operate with impunity in a dusty haze of broken trust and promises — drinking merrily from the trough of excess while the masses line up for duty as campaign cannon fodder. It used to be easy to point and laugh at the absurdity of it all, to write and in big, neon letters lay bare the madness of a naked emperor armada, strutting forth in blind confidence. It used to be funny when narcissistic rage was the exception.

These days, it takes a village to raise me from a self­ imposed cynical slumber or a Donald Trump. As a fol­ low­up act to Barack Obama, “The Don” plays in the same aimless space as the Boswell Wilkie Circus — mildly entertaining at first until you realise the prod­ uct is deeply flawed and struggling for relevance in a world that is no longer amused by the whipping of ani­ mals. This is where The Don finds himself today.

Dressed in glitter and gold, centre stage, grappling with fading attendance and dwindling interest as he stands on a lone island of madness: a lion tamer with­ out an audience, a ringmaster without his hat, a per­ former without a point.

The fact is that if your parents are in that quali­ fying (poor) income group, the school you would have attended is not producing vast numbers of matriculants who qualify for the limited spaces at tertiary institutions.

So we probably can afford to give those qualify­ ing students this break, and in fact, we should en­ sure that the money made available will be ex­ tended to include the other important costs.

So please may we get to a time where the vast majority of children who start Grade 1 get through matric, and then may the vast majority of them one day be well­qualified to demand a place at a tertiary institution and demand from us the money to fund their studies.

In his latest desperate attempt to appease a right­ wing­base, our Donald issued a statement bemoaning immigrants from “shi*thole countries” such as Haiti and Africa, wishing for more imports from places like Norway. Now, I know what he means. Somewhere in the pickled onion of his idea languishes a desire for more skilled labour that would decrease the likelihood of needing state support. I get it, Don, but then refugees from a place such as Haiti, destroyed by nature and forgotten by the world, is not the same issue as immi­ gration. To lump the entire continent of Africa in your long­drop of contempt is a little harsh and does little to help your nation’s bargaining power as it seeks to limit Chinese influence on this mineral­rich continent.

“Political leadership” excluded, there are plenty things positive to say for African countries. Some of the U.S.’s most influential citizens come from sh*thole pla­ ces like SA. People who, through ingenuity, drive and inspiration, are shaping our future worlds, both here on Earth and the skies above.

I encourage Trump to take stock of the role he, and his country, are playing in the rapid decline of interna­ tional collaborations for the greater good of a sustain­ able planet. Actions such as quitting the Paris Agree­ ment and acerbic rhetoric towards anyone not willing to bend the knee to Uncle Sam (threatening to cut aid if lines are not toed) all help to fuel negative sentiment that will help accelerate the divisions on this planet, and we only have this one at this point in time, Don. Until Elon Musk (or another sh*thole export) helps us colonise Mars, this third rock from the sun will have to do and you, as a superpower country, have a respon­ sibility to help make this a better, safer, world. Or not, in which case I encourage you to build your walls and exit the (world) stage — to the right … pursued by a bear.

ETWEEN 1979 and 2007, the Dakar Rally took place in Europe and Africa, most regularly between Paris and Dakar (in Senegal).

However, since the cancellation of the 2008 event, the Dakar has been held in South America.

Now, after a decade of success in South America, one has to ask whether the Dakar Rally will ever return to Africa — the legendary continent that stirred the imagination of the world for almost 30 years and gave the Dakar its venerable reputation.

The holding of the Dakar Rally in Africa was never without controversy. It was often criticised for bringing little or no benefit to Africa and its inhabitants.

A French newspaper called it a “vulgar display of power and wealth in places where men continue to die from hunger and thirst”; while others referred to it as “colonialism that needs to be eradicated”.

But, the defining moment came on December 24, 2007, when four French tourists were killed in Mauritania by members of a terrorist sleeper cell linked to Al-Qaeda.

The 2008 Dakar Rally was cancelled soon thereafter on January 4, with race organisers claiming that, over and above the attack, direct threats had been made against the event by Al-Qaeda-related organisations.

Regrettably, this sounded the death

knell for the entire African continent’s hosting of the Dakar Rally, rather than West Africa alone.

During 2008, a decision was taken to relocate the Dakar Rally to South America for safety and security reasons, and it has remained there ever since.

Although South America has proven itself a worthy destination for the Dakar Rally, the time has surely come for the event to return to Africa.

There’s just something not right about the Dakar Rally being held anywhere other than on African soil.

It’s like the Tour de France being held in Australia, Wimbledon being held in Singapore, or the U.S. Masters being held in Spain.

Yes, these nations would likely host successful events, but they’d lack that sense of authenticity associated with them being held in their home nations.

In fact, there are instances of nations asking other nations to host events on their behalf due to terrorist concerns.

One example is the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, which was moved from India to South Africa in 2009 after the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Importantly though, this was a once-off move made under extreme circumstances and, unlike the Dakar Rally, the IPL was moved straight back to India the year after and has been hosted there ever since.

The reality is that Africa has many regions that are both ideal and safe to host the Dakar Rally — southern Africa being one of them in particular.

Not only this, the event would take place in a similar time zone to Europe, boosting follower convenience and viewership.

So, what is the real reason behind the organisers’ decision not to bring the Dakar Rally back to Africa?

To me, the continued hosting of the rally in South America constitutes a blatant vote of no confidence in Africa’s ability to host the event.

Afro-pessimism aside, we have to ask ourselves whether southern African nations would even be interested in hosting the rally?

Yes, there are environmental concerns related to carbon footprint and dust, but wouldn’t the unparalleled marketing of Africa’s natural wonders be a boon for the tourism sector and revenue for the host nations?

No doubt, the incredible vistas of South American landscapes, including deserts, salt lakes and mountain ranges, have attracted countless tourists to the region.

Surely vistas of the Namib Desert, Botswana’s wilderness and wildlife, Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls and South Africa’s magnificent coastline would attract potential visitors from around the world to come and explore these wonders for themselves.

It must be said that for as long as the Dakar Rally is held in South America, it will remain but a shadow of its former glory.

And in this, stands an unexploited opportunity for the SADC to send a delegation to meet the Dakar Rally’s organising committee and campaign for the Dakar to return home where it belongs, in Africa.

In their first fixture Manor A played Maphumulo, Manor A won the toss and elected to batt put on a massive 214 runs for the loss of two wickets in their allotted 20 overs with Adesh BaSMARTER PEOPLE. BRIGHTER FUTURES geloo scoring a brilliant 101 not out and Cameron Pillay 73, they were the chief contributors.

In reply Maphumulo was bundled out for 52 in 13 overs.

In the feature match, the much anticipated Oceanville vs Manor A which drew lots of interest from other clubs and a large gathering of spectators was indeed an exciting one.

Oceanville won the toss and opted to bat keeping Manor on the field.

Oceanville put on a massive 145 in their allotted 20 overs with Sashin scoring 53 he was well supported by Rajiv Ramsing 23, Keshav Basedo 21 and Jurano Govinder 26.

RENOWNED athlete and Olympic Medalist Terence Parkin is taking on an incredible test of stamina and strength in an effort to raise money for the Deaf Children’s Learn to Swim and Water Safety Programme.

Parkin plans to cycle, swim and canoe a mammoth 902km between Johannesburg and Durban in order to generate funds for young South Africans with disabilities.

Parkin was born deaf and overcame his personal challenges to become the most celebrated Deaflympic athlete in the world and a silver medal winner in the 2000 Summer Olympics.

His natural talents as a swimmer and his passionate advocacy for young deaf athletes led to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation recently naming him as one of their ambassadors.He travels around the world giving talks on issues around water safety, preventing drowning fatalities and coaching children on how to swim. He now plans to undertake the 902km challenge to raise funds so that deaf South African youth can have the opportunity to benefit from learning to swim.

This, as Parkin can personally attest to, has a number of benefits on physical health, emotional well-being and self esteem.

“I want to help children in South Africa reach their full potential and grow into healthy adults,” Parkin says.

“Swimming has been an incredible positive influence in my life and I want children with hearing difficulties and other challenges to experience something similar. Who knows, there may be more Olympic medalists out there in SA that we can reach through this initiative.”

Parkin intends to do a five-day, 723km mountain bike cycle tour from Johannesburg to Midmar, where he will do a 13km swim. He will then do a 33km run and end off with a 124km, three-day Dusi

canoe marathon.

It’s an enormous challenge to his ability as an athlete but he feels up for the test, in the name of a worthy cause. At this point, he is looking for sponsorship to help raise funds for his cause.
