Dear CAC Members, With the New Year come thoughts of what can I do to improve something with me. Hope it does with you also. Making New Year's resolutions can be easy. Keeping them is the tough part. I hope one of those resolutions will be to find a reuse for something: clothing, stuff or anything else that fits the "recycle” definition. After cleaning out Jimmie's mother's house, I encourage all of you to take the initiative to get started now on that clean out project. NOW. Recycling became a wonderful thing when we were in the midst of that job. There are far larger perks to recycling. It helps our environment, locally and nationally. We certainly want to have -and leave- a planet that is safe for us and our families. Along with all the recycling, put this at the top of your list: every New Year’s Day, send your dues to the CAC Treasurer. That way you cannot forget to pay your dues. It will be your New Year’s resolution. You only need one that will do the most good and help Myron Fischer keep his records up to date. International is ahead of us and Florida State is in February, so we'll be looking for you to come join us at our CAC gatherings. Look for the Bulletin Board and the notice. I'm looking for you. For those who have never attended a Hobo rally, it’s a tradition that has been perpetuated for years, a must see, a “must attend”, and a “must participate”. Every year the Airstreamers from California, Nevada, many snowbirds and members from other states, gather on the fairgrounds in Blythe, a small agricultural community that stretches along I-10, near the Arizona border. The winter temperatures are usually mild and our Hobos for a day enjoy year after year the outdoor Hobo parade to the sound of the Hobo band. There is a best beard contest and a Hobo king and queen contest. So, be creative and plan for a hobo outfit. What’s a hobo? A hobo is migratory laborer, not a tramp. What’s the origin of the word? Unknown, but speculations abound, to the point that even respected etymologists write about it. (1) Some came up with a pseudo-classical origin, the first syllables of the latin words “Homo bonus” (good man), but the most credible theories link the origin of the word to the nicknames given to the itinerant workers in the railroad (“ho, beau!”) or in farms (“hoe boys”). All those suppositions can be the product of the creative mind of an etymologist, but Hobos did -and do- exist. Some of them even became very famous like Charles Bukowski, Woody Guthrie, Jack Kerouac, Louis L'amour, Jack London, James Michener, Robert Mitchum, Eugene O'Neill, George Orwell and John Steinbeck. Before World War I, the population of hobos was estimated to 700,000.(2) During the Great Depression, the population of hobos grew dramatically when the jobless workers left their home for a free ride on a freight train and the hope of better prospects. Poverty and hard times sent the men and women on the road looking for a way to survive, and the phenomenon was not unique to our country: you have all heard the ballad “Waltzing Matilda”, the “unofficial Australian anthem” about a swagman, the Hobo Australian counterpart, who traveled by foot from farm to farm. (2) If you are really a hobo fanatic, there is, since the early 1900’s, an official hobo convention every summer in the little town of Britt, Iowa, with a parade and a king and queen coronation, story telling, a flea market and a mulligan stew made originally with whatever meat was available...squirrels included! Classic Airstream Club Caravan News MEANDERING MINNESOTA July 5―July 17, 2013 By Pat Shaw Plans are finalized for our CAC caravan Meandering Minnesota. It will begin immediately following the WBCCI International Rally in Huron, SD. Stay in the cooler north of the country for awhile and join us as we travel some of the sites in central Minnesota. We will spend the first three nights at the fairgrounds in New Ulm. It is a quaint town of German heritage with several historic attractions and other interesting sites to visit. There will be an audio auto tour or walking tour available of the downtown district. While downtown we will listen to the 45-foot tall Glockenspiel’s bells chime. We will also view the 12 figurines depicting the town’s history as they rotate on a circulating stage. It is one of the few free-standing carillons of its size in the world. There will be a group tour of the Schell’s Brewing Co. which is operated by the fifth generation of German immigrant August Schell. It is the second oldest family run brewery in the country. The brewery continues to specialize in its 150 year old German-style lager. Following the tour there will be a beer (or root beer) sampling. The rest of our time in New Ulm will be spent choosing our individual routes of enjoyment. There are so many to visit! Fort Ridgely, located near New Ulm, was involved in the US-Dakota War of 1862. An article about its history was printed in the last CAC newsletter. No one will want to miss the opportunity to visit this historic site. Another area of strong interest is Hermann the German, a 102 foot monument portraying Hermann the Cherusci, an ancient hero whose army liberated Germany from Roman rule in 9 A.D. As German immigrants came to the area, the legend of Hermann as the father of German independence and a symbol of honor and pride came with them. In 1887, a statue similar to the one in Germany was under construction. It took almost a decade to complete the more than 4,000pound statue. In 2000, US Congress designated it as a national symbol of German heritage. Visitors may climb a spiral staircase to the base of the statue for a stunning, panoramic view of New Ulm. There are more sites for individuals to visit. Turner Hall was built in 1858 by the Turnvereins as a place to dedicate oneself to physical fitness, education and gymnastics. The first Turner Hall was burned during the Dakota War of 1862, but it was rebuilt and still provides a place for social and civic gatherings, gymnastics, as well as dining in the Ratskeller (basement tavern). There are 70 feet of stunning murals portrayed of Switzerland, Italy and Germany. During WW II the murals were painted over to prove their loyalty to America. They have since been uncovered and are visible again. If you enjoy touring historic homes there are several to be visited while in New Ulm. Governor (14th) John Lind’s house is a stately 1887 Queen Anne style home. The childhood home of Wanda Gag, author of the popular children’s book “Millions of Cats” is another Queen Anne-style home built by her father. If you visit this home, be sure to ask about the “theme of seven.” If you enjoy visiting wineries, the Morgan Creek Vineyards is located about eight miles from New Ulm. For a price you may tour the winery and enjoy wine tasting. For historical buffs, be sure to stop in at the Brown County Historical Society-Museum. There are exhibits of the Dakota War, display of Century Farms, items from sister city Ulm, Germany, and a county research library. Open for more places to visit? Enjoy a stop at the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, a walk through The Way of the Cross (14 stations with statues imported from Bavaria), and all the shops and other historic buildings in downtown New Ulm. When we leave New Ulm, we will travel north about 100 miles to Clear Lake. Here we will stay at the Airstream Park for three nights. After arriving and setting up camp, we will enjoy some socializing. To be continued next page

Classic Airstream Club Caravan News MEANDERING MINNESOTA (continued) The next morning we will carpool to St. Cloud which is approximately 15 miles north to view the picturesque Munsinger Gardens located along the east bank of the Mississippi River. The Riverside Park (as it was first known) was purchased by the city in 1915. During the Great Depression, the WPA improved the park with tree planting and flowerbeds. Other additions have included the creation of rock-lined paths, a lily pond, and a fountain. Most of the work in developing the garden was directed by Joseph Munsinger for whom the garden is now named. East of the Munsinger Gardens we will stroll through the Clemens Garden. Bill and Virginia Clemens purchased this property which was located directly across the street from their home. Virginia Clemens battled multiple sclerosis for more than 40 years. She was known for her love of roses and flowers. As a true act of love, Bill Clemens purchased 1100 rose bushes and established (and continues to fund) the Clemens Gardens. The Virginia Clemens Rose Garden has flourished and is now part of six separate gardens along the boulevard. The fountains, statues, and creative display of roses and flowers is well worth the visit. We will enjoy lunch together in St. Cloud. Following lunch, individuals may choose to wander through St. Cloud and visit the sites. Brochures will be given that list many possible stops. Our last day at the Airstream Park will be an optional carpool to the James J. Hill House (railroad magnate) in St. Paul (see picture below). Chandeliers, stained glass, and hand-carved woodwork are just a few decorative highlights of the 36,000 square foot home, which features original mechanical systems that provided heat, light, water, ventilation, and security. We will also stop at the St. Paul Cathedral which is across the street from the Hill House. Other possibilities for individuals include trips to Camping World, Shorewood RV (Airstream dealer), or Mall of America. Leaving Clear Lake we will travel to Owatonna which is about 130 miles southward for a three-night stay. We will camp at the county fairgrounds and enjoy a relaxing evening of socializing. In the morning, our first visit in Owatonna will be carpooling to the Minnesota State Orphanage. There were 10,635 “state schoolers” that were orphaned, abused, abandoned and sent to the orphanage. We will tour the grounds and buildings, watch videos and hear stories as told by those who lived this history, explore Cottage 11 (a restored boys cottage), and visit the Children’s Cemetery. “For some, it was a circle of hell; for others, a safe haven.” Following the orphanage we will drive downtown to the National Farmers Bank. It has been called ”the most beautiful bank in the world.” The bank was designed in 1908 by the legendary Chicago architect, Louis Sullivan. It is one of eight small Midwestern banks that he designed. It is known as “A Jewel Box of the Prairie,” and in 1976 it was recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Our last day in Owatonna is a “Free Day”. Ladies may choose to travel north six miles to the Medford Outlet Mall, sports fans might wander through Cabelas, while others may elect to travel around the town of Owatonna. The next morning we will caravan 35 miles south to the Freeborn Fairgrounds in Albert Lea. During our stay, we will share a potluck dinner, carpool to Austin for an enjoyable visit at the SPAM Museum, and conclude our caravan with a boat cruise on lovely Albert Lea Lake. We look forward to sharing Fun, Friendship, and Adventure on this caravan with our CAC friends. Please come join us as we meander our way through parts of Minnesota.

Look at a copy of Airstream Life: in it you will find an order form for a booklet entitled “The Newbies Guide of Airstreaming.”You will find it very interesting.

When you park your Airstream for the winter:
Safe travels
Check batteries- water, clean ends of battery cables. If in a winter environment bring batteries inside or keep plugged in.

How are your tires? The cement /gravel/asphalt wooden blocks help prevent tire problems
3.
Use fabric softener sheets to keep ants out.
4.
Use mothballs to keep mice away. I put moth flakes in old film canisters and drill holes in the tops and put them in the furnace / hot water heater areas to keep bug away.
C.
Buy a Torque wrench- Northern Tool or Harbor Freight- for a Christmas present for your Airstream. Once you have torqued airstream trailer wheels, remember to do it again in 50 miles and then again if they stay the same lengthen time between checks. Anyone can use a torque wrench- directions are on rims of wheels for pressure- also in Owners Manual. ABOVE ALL ---- DO NOT OVER TORQUE.

When you start out on the road: FRESH WATER TANK- Put a big dose of Clorox - to clean tank- Drive around- allow contents to swish around and then dump. Add fresh water. WATER PUMP- Before using water pump- clean water pump filter and faucet strainers.
