NEWSLETTER Fall 2012 Volume 3 Issue 2

Classic AIRSTREAM Club IntraClub of WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL

Dear CAC Members, Just think I volunteered for this presidential job again. There are several reasons that I have stuck out my neck: 1. I think this club has something special to offer to its members, in smaller shorter caravans in interesting areas of the country . 2. A chance to get together at International and at Florida State for get together acquainted snack, or a meal of some sort. If you attend a large rally- host a Classic Get Together - get to know your fellow club members. 3. A beautiful thing is to admire our rigs. They are all similar and shiny. 4. Driving down the road in a group causes a stare but don't you love it ? 5. We are in this club to support each other. We are all familiar with the "Recycle " term that seems to be everywhere. This word has become a part of our everyday language. We are all recycling something, ourselves, our talents, opinions, some ideas worked before - they should work again- maybe with some modification- but we are all thinking about how we can add something to this club to make it a success. Please offer a recycling tip this year to make everyone's job a little easier and give something extra to the CAC. I'd like to hear from you with your suggestion. We always need to listen to the other person's input so be open to recycling a good plan that worked for your Unit. Several Intra Clubs have had to disband because of lack of leadership- Please don't let the Classic Club be one of those. There were too many battles won to let this club be a statistic. We always need officers, step up and help us out- don't run and hide. We recycle people too. Thank you and I'll be calling on you this year. If there is a burning in your soul/heart- that you would like to be involved in some way I need to know- Tell Me! Bettie Jones CAC President

CAC Best Joke Recycling (LOL) BEST EVER SENIOR CITIZEN JOKE

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." Her neighbor asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh ........…

"Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box!"

Note of the Editor: I can’t remember who sent me that joke but if you did and are reading it, be sure that I’m giving you credit for it.

The other cubicle… Traveling down the coast road I needed to use the toilet. I stopped at a rest area headed for the toilet, went into the cubicle and this is what happened... "Hi, how are you?" Now...I'm not the type to start a conversation in a toilet and I don't know what got into me, but... I answered… "Doin' just fine!" Then the other person said: "So what are you up to?" What kind of question is that? I'm thinking.... This is too bizarre... so I said: "Uhhh, I'm like you, just traveling!" At this point I was just trying to get out as fast as I could when I heard another question. "Can I come over?" OK, this question was just too weird for me but I figured I would just be polite and end the conversation...so I said: "No.. I'm just a little too busy right now !!!" Then I hear the person say nervously... "Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other cubicle who keeps answering all my questions

Classic Airstream Travel Tip Recycling Learning History Along the Way By Marie Efira Our Airstream travels allow us to meet new friends and to stay in touch with our old pals. We discover the natural beauties of our country but also learn history along the way, on location. During our participation to the Civil War National Caravan, the soothing vision of a blooming peach orchard next to a charming pond that tragically became known as “the Bloody Pond” (Shiloh National Military Park, TN), made us realize the senselessness of that horrible fratricide bloodshed. I remember I didn’t really understand the battle of the Little Bighorn - though I had read on the subject - until we did a driving tour of the vastly spread battlefield in our own truck, and could appreciate the influence of the topography on the outcome of the battle (Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, near Hardin, MT). Reading a posteriori can also be very enriching. On our way to the International rally in Gillette, we stayed in Buffalo, WY and drove a few miles north to visit the Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, on the Bozeman Trail. I’m reading now the well documented book “Indian Fights and Fighters” by Cyrus Townsend Brady (First published in 1904) and I can mentally visualize the events in their natural setting. Fortunately history is not always about conflicts but also about regular people and their successful struggle to overcome the elements and the wrath of nature. Next year when you attend the International rally in Huron, SD, you’ll have many opportunities to visit historical sites on the way or nearby. For you Ladies who avidly read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books, “The Long Winter” (my favorite!) was an accurate description of the severe 1880-1881 winter that struck the Dakota Territory and in particular the little town of De Smet, SD, where she lived. De Smet, the “Little Town on the Prairie”, is located 33 miles east of Huron and you can visit the Ingals Homestead and see with your own eyes the locations described in the novels. More information on De Smet Ingals Homestead at http://www.ingallshomestead.com. After Huron, Pat and Dave Shaw’s Classic Airstream Club caravan “Meandering Minnesota” will meet in New Ulm, MN, a town with a rich historical past. “New Ulm was designated a "Preserve America City” by the President’s Advisory Council on The Ingals Little House and Hay roof Barn Historic Preservation in 2006.” The town of New Ulm is commemorating this year the 150th Anniversary of the “The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.” For more on New Ulm, Mn, see the visitors guide at http://www.newulm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/2012-NU_VISGUIDE.pdf “The Dakota War of 1862 (...) was an armed conflict between the United States and several bands of the eastern Sioux (also known as eastern Dakota). It began on August 17, 1862, along the Minnesota River in southwest Minnesota. (…) Throughout the late 1850s, treaty violations by the United States and late or unfair annuity payments by Indian agents caused increasing hunger and hardship among the Dakota. (…) On August 17, 1862, one young Dakota with a hunting party of three others killed five settlers while on a hunting expedition. That night a council of Dakota decided to attack settlements throughout the Minnesota River valley to try to drive whites out of the area. There has never been an official report on the number of settlers killed, although as many as over 800 settlers have been cited (…) Over the next several months, continued battles between the Dakota against settlers and later, the United States Army, ended with the surrender of most of the Dakota bands. By late December 1862, soldiers had taken captive more than a thousand Dakota, who were interned in jails in Minnesota. After trials and sentencing, 38 Dakota were hanged on December 26, 1862, in the largest one-day execution in American history.” Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_War_of_1862
