SAPPANWOOD ON SISAL FIBER EXPLORATION

category : natural dye, natural fiber, structure design

Sappanwood on sisal fiber exploration is a part of natural fiber and natural dye class. The exploration itself including preparation steps (scouring and bleaching), dyeing process using different kinds of modifier (pH level) and metalic mordant (Al and Fe), and structure exploration for final product which is 50x150 cm textile.

The best result for scouring is 15 minutes scouring time, while for the best result for bleaching is 30 minutes. While the dyeing with sappanwood aqueous extract gives us wide color ranges yellow-orange-red-pink-purple.

Scouring and beaching result

Dyeing results using pre-post mordanting method. From left to right: fibers pre-treated with chalk as modifier, pre-treated with vinegar as modifier, and fibers pre-treated with aluminium salt as modifier.

ALUMAREKAH

category : natural dye, alternative material, bioplastic, jewelry

Alumarekah is a collection of jewelry about the cycle of life “everything that blooms will die eventually” as a final result of thesis project and research about bioplastic as alternative textile. Alumarekah has two subcollection called “Rekah” which represents bloom and “Alum” which represents deterioration.

Alumarekah was started with the realization on how damaging the textile industry nowadays and came up with the idea to make more sustainable alternative textile from the polymers that can be found around us in Indonesia, the goals are to create shorter and simpler making process compared to conservative textile, create diversities of materials in textile industries especially for textile craft, and locally made material .

The experiment and exploration parted into 3 groups:

Experiment on material

Classification of Biodegradable Polymers (John dan Thomas, 2008)

Biodegradable Polymers

The material experiment based on John and Thomas (2008) Classification of Biodegradable Polymers. The aim of the experiment is to make a formula based on visual uniqueness, success rate, and finding the best additive to increase its performance. There are 3 types of biomass polymer experimented and data is shown on chart.

Casein is a biopolymer derived from milk’s protein. It has been used by human for decades due to its adhesive ability, and its milky white color. The objective of the exploration is to utilise milk waste (the expired one, yes).

Every 100ml of milk will result about 10gr of casein. There are two types of result from this exploration, clay-like material and gel.

The exploration of clay-like material itself exploring kinds of acid used in deriving casein (from vinegar to lemon juice) and additives such as alcohol, glycerin, and calcium carbonate to modify its visual and texture.
