Science and technology

Year 5 have been learning all about creepy crawlies and how to identify them. They even went looking for insects in the walled garden this spring with bug catcher jars. Year 3 got to explore outdoor learning when they studied seeds and pollination.

The Pre-Prep School pupils had some special guests this year who helped them gain a stronger understanding of zoology. Animal expert Phil, who works for educational company Zoolab, brought some interesting friends with him. The children got to meet Turbo the giant snail, Echo the gecko, Rosie the tarantula, Sting the scorpion, Mike the cockroach and Slinky the snake. Later in the summer term, the children had some spikey visitors too. The company Hedgehog Rescue told pupils some interesting facts about the prickly creatures. We are sending lots of hedge-hugs to our spikey friends, Henry and Harry, and we hope to see them soon!

WISLEY GARDENS TRIPS
Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a trip to Wisley gardens to support their science topics where they are learning all about plants. The Pre-Prep School have been following the latest research being done by the RHS to support children learning through nature. The children spent their day engaged in a workshop finding out about how plants grow. They also enjoyed a trip to the glass house armed with a sketchbook and paper, where they spent their time observing at different plants.

The children in Nursery have been learning all about space in their topic ‘Up, up and away!’ They loved making rockets, dressing up and reading space stories. We are proud to say that their fun immersive clasroom work using green screen technology was highly commended in the Muddy Stilettos award category ‘Most creative learning through play’.

SPACE TEDDY
One small step for bear, one giant leap for Claremont-kind! Yes, that’s right…we sent a teddy to space! In May, twelve Pre-Prep and Prep pupils ventured to Buckinghamshire to send our teddy off with the help of space engineering company European Astrotech. Teddy Claremont was securely attached to a giant helium balloon which helped him soar up into the sky into the Earth’s atmosphere. We wish him a safe journey home and hope he returns from his space mission soon!

Computing and technology integration are fundamental to our curriculum as they equip children with problem solving skills and provide an opportunity to harness their wonderful imaginations. This year Pre-Prep children have really enjoyed developing their computational thinking skills through learning to code and program. They have used technology to bring learning to life across their curriculum subjects and we have been enormously impressed with their focus and enthusiasm for all things tech! In the Prep School coding is taught as part of a specialist rotation and our own IT department provides a valuable source of knowledge to help us develop the children’s skills.

RACECAR CLUB
Since January, 9 intrepid Year 6 pupils have been tinkering away on a Friday afternoon. The Greenpower goblin go kart has been built from start to finish by the Prep Schools pupils themselves. After a term of building we were excited to finally take the kart to an event at Seaford College where we raced against 22 other karts through the day. The children took part in a slalom, a drag race and finally a velodrome style timed sprint pursuit. The highlight of the day was Nate B winning the overall timed sprint race, which was the most competitive event of the day and an outstanding achievement.

The Prep School pupils participated in a variety of STEM workshops as part of British Science Week. Activities included coding a battery powered car, engineering bridges, exploring nature and making Roman gromas!

SCIENCE FAIR

PrePrep and Nursery pupils enjoyed doing fun experiments where they learnt about anything from magnetism to chromatography, from mirrors to elasticity. ‘Grow your own rainbow’ and ‘Bubble art’ were some of the pupil’s favourite activities.
