SOUTH EL MONTE NEWS
EXCITING UPDATES ON CITY FACILITIES!
We’re thrilled to announce the latest enhancements aimed at improving the performance and energy efficiency of city facilities while reducing energy consumption and peak electricity demand. The Senior Center, Mini Center, and the Community Center have undergone remarkable transformations with a series of upgrades.
At the Community Center, lighting upgrades have been completed to enhance visibility and ambiance. The center is currently undergoing a makeover with the installation of a new basketball gym floor and A/C system throughout the facility. Meanwhile, at the Mini Center, we’ve implemented energy-efficient fixtures and are in the process of installing a brand-new A/C system.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! At the Senior Center, we’ve recently completed a series of upgrades to create a more comfortable environment for our cherished seniors. This includes the installation of brand-new floors, energy-efficient lighting, and state-of-the-art A/C systems.
These projects have been made possible through partnerships with PassiveLogic, Southern California Regional Energy Network (SoCalREN), and The Energy Coalition. Additionally, the City received a grant from the United States Department of Energy to help fund the lighting and A/C system upgrades. They exemplify the city’s dedication to sustainability and the enhancement of various aspects of community spaces, all aimed at enriching the residents’ experience.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer s can be overwhelming, but we have resources to help As a caregiver you likely have many responsibilities It is important to have a support network to take care of your own well-being
Be a Healthy Caregiver: As a caregiver you may find yourself with so many responsibilities that you neglect taking good care of yourself Needless to say, the best thing you can do for the person you are caring for, is to stay physically and emotionally strong yourself
See the doctor: Be sure to visit your physician regularly (at least annually) and listen to what your body is telling you Any exhaustion, stress, sleeplessness, or changes in appetite or behavior should be taken seriously Ignoring these symptoms can cause your physical and mental health to decline
Get moving: No doubt you know that exercise is an important part of staying healthy it can help relieve stress, prevent disease and make you feel good Nevertheless, finding the time to exercise is another story, so we recommend taking advantage of the below tips:
Take friends or family along with you
Start Small - even if it is just walking for 15 minutes a day
Exercise at home- When the person with dementia naps, pull out a yoga mat and stretch, set up a stationary bike, or try exercise tapes
Eat well: Heart-healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, are good for overall health and may help protect the brain A Mediterranean diet includes relatively little red meat and emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats Try new recipes and involve the person with dementia
FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU COPE
1
3
Manage your level of stress: Stress can cause physical problems (blurred vision, stomach irritation, high blood pressure) and changes in behavior (irritability, lack of concentration, change in appetite)
Note your symptoms and discuss with a doctor, as needed Try to find relaxation techniques that work for you
Grieve the losses, focus on positive times as they arise, and enjoy good memories

5
Be realistic: The care you give does make a difference, but many behaviors can't be controlled
2 Know you are doing your best: Remember that the care you provide makes a difference and that you are doing the best you can You may feel guilty because you can t do more, but individual care needs change as Alzheimer s progresses You can t promise how care will be delivered, but you can make sure that the person with the disease is well cared for and safe For support and encouragement join ALZConnected (https://alzconnected org/) an online caregiver community

4 Accept changes as they occur: People with Alzheimer’s disease change over time and so do their needs They may require care beyond what you can provide on your own Becoming aware of community resources and care options from home care services to residential care can make the transition easier So too, will the support and assistance of those around you
Take a break: It’s normal to need a break from caregiving duties No one can do it all by themselves

FIREWORKS SAFETY
Fireworks are symbolic of Fourth of July celebrations. Bright, colorful and fun to watch, fireworks can be very dangerous.
Even fireworks labeled “Safe and Sane” can severely burn or kill you. In fact, 90% of all fireworks-related injuries are caused by legal fireworks. Instead, the Los Angeles County Fire Department encourages everyone to leave it to the professionals and visit a fireworks show.
If you plan on using “Safe and Sane” fireworks, learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from fireworksrelated injuries.
