Sanger Workforce Achievement Grant
SWAG
Sanger Industrial Development Corporation Launches Workforce Grant to Strengthen Career and Technical Education
SANGER, TX – The Sanger Industrial Development Corporation (SIDC), in partnership with the Sanger Education Foundation and Sanger Independent School District (SISD), proudly announces the launch of the Sanger Workforce Achievement Grant (SWAG)—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities for students.

With a total grant allocation of $234,075, SWAG

directly invests in programs that equip students with industry-relevant skills, ensuring they are workforce-ready upon graduation. The grant will support automotive, business marketing, and cosmetology programs, aligning educational opportunities with high-demand industries and fostering economic growth in the Sanger community.
Expanding Career Training for Sanger’s Future Workforce
CTE programs play a vital role in building a skilled workforce that supports Sanger’s economic development. Currently, Sanger ISD offers 15 CTE programs, 80 courses, and 33 industry certifications, providing handson training in fields that lead directly to employment. Through SWAG, students will gain greater access to state-of-the-art facilities, a modernized curriculum, and expanded industry partnerships.
Key Program Enhancements:
• Automotive Technology – Expansion of the automotive training facility, repurposing the former Sanger Middle School gym into a fully equipped space to better prepare students for careers in transportation, logistics, and distribution.
• Business Marketing – Development of a curriculum focused on entrepreneurship, marketing, and graphic design, giving students a competitive edge in various business sectors.
• Cosmetology – Establishment of a new, inhouse cosmetology center, eliminating the need for students to travel to North Central Texas College (NCTC) and tripling enrollment capacity.
A Collaborative Approach to Workforce Development
The SWAG initiative reflects a strategic collaboration between the SIDC, Sanger ISD, and the Sanger Education Foundation. They share a vision of strengthening career pathways for students while supporting the needs of local businesses.
“By investing in career and technical education, we are not only empowering students with the
skills they need for success, but we are also ensuring that Sanger remains a thriving hub for business and industry,” said Shani Bradshaw, Director of Economic Development for the City. Jennie Flaa, Deputy Superintendent of Sanger ISD, emphasized the importance of this initiative for students and the local workforce. “Our students deserve access to the best possible career training opportunities, and SWAG ensures that they graduate with the skills and certifications needed to thrive in high-demand industries. This investment in career and technical education will create lasting benefits for our students, their families, and the entire Sanger community.”
The program also fosters mentorship networks, internship opportunities, and job placement services by partnering with local businesses to bridge the gap between education and employment.
Building a Stronger Future for Sanger
By aligning education with workforce demands, SWAG ensures that students graduate with valuable industry certifications, positioning them for immediate career opportunities. This initiative also strengthens Sanger’s economic landscape, providing local employers with a pipeline of skilled, job-ready professionals. Additionally, it allows students to offer services such as cosmetology and automotive repair at a reduced rate to the community while under the supervision of professionals in a classroom environment, giving them hands-on experience while benefiting local residents.

Youth Diversion Program
City of Sanger Launches Youth Diversion Program to Support Local Families
Sanger, TX – The City of Sanger is taking a proactive approach to helping local youth stay on the right path by implementing a Youth Diversion Program through the Sanger Municipal Court. This initiative provides young people with a second chance while ensuring accountability in a constructive manner.
As part of a statewide mandate, all municipal and justice courts in Texas are required to establish a Youth Diversion Plan by January 1, 2025. The primary goal of Sanger’s program is to steer youth away from the traditional court system and into programs focused on education, community service, and personal growth.
A New Path for Sanger’s Youth
The Youth Diversion Program offers an alternative to fines and criminal records for minors who make mistakes. If a young person between the ages of 10 and 16 is charged with a non-traffic-related minor offense—such as vandalism, theft, or disorderly conduct—they may qualify for diversion instead of a conviction. Eligible families will be notified by the Sanger Municipal Court.
Rather than facing long-term legal consequences, participating youth may be required to:
• Complete community service
• Attend educational programs or counseling
• Write letters of apology or reflection
• Pay restitution, if necessary
Balancing Accountability with Opportunity
This program provides young individuals with the opportunity to learn from their mistakes without carrying the burden of a permanent
record. However, accountability remains a key component—participants must fulfill all program requirements in order to have their case dismissed.
Building a Brighter Future for Sanger
Prior to this initiative, local youth had limited options once they entered the municipal court system. Now, Sanger has a structured approach to early intervention, supporting families while promoting positive outcomes for young residents.
“This program is about guiding kids toward better choices while ensuring they take responsibility for their actions,” said Kylie Hackworth, Youth Diversion Coordinator for the City of Sanger. “By providing the right support, we can help them move forward without being permanently impacted by a minor mistake.”
For More Information
For further details about the Youth Diversion Program, please contact the Sanger Municipal Court at 940-458-7131.
The City of Sanger remains committed to fostering a supportive community where young people can learn, grow, and thrive. This new program represents a significant step toward creating a brighter future for local families and the entire city.

A Small-town Tragedy: Stephen Baker Funds Being Raised in His Honor
By Sanger Area Historical Society and Museum And Stephen Baker Memorial Committee
The small community of Sanger, Texas experienced a shocking event in the late summer of 1964 just as school was to begin the week of Labor Day. The students had registered Thursday, August 27, 1964 for the upcoming school year to begin September 1. The morning registration for students went as planned and that afternoon the football team was to have a scrimmage game with Carroll at what was to later become Stephen Baker Field. The pep squad had a practice at the field and late afternoon the football team arrived.
Both teams took the field and after a few plays, Stephen Baker, Sanger’s outstanding quarterback, was leading the team. He called a quarterback sneak, took the ball and started forward when he was tackled, and went down. It became apparent quickly there was something wrong. Stephen was taken to Parkland Hospital where surgery was performed late that night. He lived until early hours of Saturday morning. The word was out quickly that Stephen was gone.

Honoring Stephen Baker: A Legacy in Bronze

Today, 60 years later, the Stephen Baker Memorial Committee has been formed to provide a memorial for Stephen. After his death, the class of 1966 formed the “Stephen Baker Scholarship Award” for a deserving senior athlete which is still being given in 2025. The football field was to be named “Stephen Baker Field.” After many years, the field was no longer used for high school football when Indian Stadium was built, and the field was used for middle school events occasionally, but eventually the bleachers were taken down and Stephen Baker Field is no longer used.
The Committee spoke at the Sanger ISD School Board in May 2024 and again in August 2024 requesting the current Indian Stadium be renamed to include Stephen’s name. In September 2024 it was announce the stadium would now be called “Stephen Baker Field at Indian Stadium.”
This has led The Committee to raise funds for a 7-foot, 6-inch bronze statue of Stephen to be placed at Stephen Baker Field at Indian Stadium. The school board graciously approved the request to proceed with the statue to honor Stephen’s memory which is a part of
The Stephen Baker Memorial Committee is raising funds for a bronze statue to be located at the newly named Stephen Baker Field at Indian Stadium. The Statue is more than just an artistic endeavor, it is a symbol intended to inspire future generations and remind them of Stephen’s unwavering character and integrity.
Celebrating Character:
Stephen is remembered for his steadfast moral compass and his commitment to ethical principles. It is our hope that after everyone who has a living memory of Stephen is gone, this statue will make students take the time to learn about Stephen and be reminded that while athleticism is often the goal, qualities like character, integrity and compassion are the key.
Why Bronze?
Bronze was chosen for its durability and timeless appeal. The choice was made to reflect the enduring impact of Stephen’s legacy.

The Field written by Alton Lee Greene
Around the turn of the century, Henry Seals and his wife, Margaret (Seals) Seals, had reached an old age and decided to move into town from their farm three miles northwest of Sanger. They chose a large two-story home on West Bolivar Street. The place included almost 20 acres of land which lay directly behind the home and farm.
Henry Seals, having been a farmer all of his life, kept his best team of mules and some equipment so that he might work his newly-acquired land. For several years he plowed, planted and harvested the yield of his 20 acres.
Later, when Henry and Margaret Seals died, their daughter, Alice, the wife of J.H. Jim Greene, inherited the place. Mr. Greene, also being a farmer of long standing at that time, moved in the town house and farmed the 20acre field in cotton, along with his other lands. Alice Seals Greene died in 1922 and left the acreage to her children.
One daughter, Jimmie Greene, inherited part of the land which was later sold to the late George Hughes.
As the years went by, houses were built up near the land. Jimmie Greene married Clifford Baker and had two children.
The old place had changed hands twice. The Sanger School System had bought part of the acres and constructed a football field and a new elementary school house.
Last Thursday, the Sanger High School football team was playing a scrimmage game with a nearby school. One of Sanger’s star football players was Stephen Baker, the son of Clifford Baker and Jimmie Greene Baker’s great grandfather had plowed this field, his grandfather had plowed this field, his mother had played as a young girl, on this field. Thursday Stephen Baker was on the field, the fourth generation to be there.
The football game was on-going and Stephen as quarterback, called the quarterback sneak, and carried the ball. He was tackled and fell to the field.
Afterwards, it was apparent that something had gone wrong as Stephen collapsed moments later.
Unconscious, he was carried from the field to the hospital where on Saturday morning he died.
His last known moments had been on the soil of…… The Field.

Fund-raising has begun and The Committee is counting on the community of Sanger’s individuals as well as businesses to help preserve the memory of this young may at the threshold of his adult life. The goal for the statue is $100,000.
