Lunch with Speaker

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon reaching out to the local business community and residents.

On July 13th, Assemblyman Anthony Rendon came to share a few topics with the Paramount business community at the Northgate Gonzalez Plaza. He spoke about the importance of small businesses in the State of California.

Rendon also shared the concerns and the challenges that the government is handling with Measure H, which deals with the ever-growing homeless population. He commented on the affects that all residents and business share and ways that our tax dollars are being directed to change and educate regarding the crisis. He was able to

and

answer questions and meet with individuals.

The Networking & Tacos Lunch was sponsored by AppleCare Medical Management, a part of OptumCare, and supported by SoCal Gas Company. Attendees were served a taco buffet by Northgate Gonzalez Markets. Northgate founder Miguel Gonzalez attended, and awards were presented on behalf of the Paramount Chamber of Commerce, the City of Paramount, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard, Senator Lara, and Assemblyman Rendon, for their tremendous contributions and impact on the city.

are You a Military Veteran Living in Paramount?

Paramount is developing a program to honor our veterans who served in the military and are no longer in the service and who live in town.

There will be a celebration event on November 3 at Paramount Park. There are plans to have dedicated parking spaces for veterans at some City parks and City Hall throughout the year. The City is also working with local businesses to feature veteran walls and special discounts.

If you would like to provide information about a veteran living in Paramount, please call (562) 220-2121.

Remember, too, that the City honors residents who are currently in the military with our Boulevard of Heroes street banners. Call (562) 220-2121 if you know of someone who is serving.

Plan to Prevent and combat Homelessness

Paramount, working with the City of Bellflower and the non-profit organization PATH, has developed a “Plan to Prevent and Combat Homelessness” that outlines priorities in addressing these issues in both

“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction”

cities. Funding from Measure H through the County Homeless Initiative has made the plan possible.

Creating it was a collaborative process with residents and expert interviews among other forms of input.

Goals include educating residents about homelessness, increasing awareness of the City’s efforts in this area, increasing access to homeless services, and preventing Paramount residents from becoming homeless.

Suggested actions include: creating storage options for belongings of the homeless and increasing accessibility to hygiene resources like showers, bathrooms, and laundry services; funding motel vouchers; forming a Paramount Homeless Coalition; encouraging local landlords to rent vacant units to people exiting homelessness; and identifying underutilized lots or buildings that could become affordable housing.

One component of the public outreach is advice on how best to approach a homeless person when attempting to assist them. To find a “Citizen’s Guide to Engaging People Experiencing Homelessness,” go to paramountcity.com and find a story on the homepage.

give Your Thoughts on Walking/ Biking Plans for Paramount

The Bellflower-Paramount Joint Active Transportation Plan will guide the design of safe, enjoyable, and convenient walking and biking options to schools, parks, and other places in the area.

To provide input, please take the online survey in English or Spanish at www. surveymonkey.com/r/BPATPParamount. (There is a story on the homepage of paramountcity.com with a link to the survey.)

Sidewalks in Ship Shape

In early 2017, the City completed its participation in a program with the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (JPIA), which is basically an insurance company for public entities, to fix damaged sidewalks in town using a different approach to repairs called horizontal cutting.

It has made quite a difference.

For the six-year period of 2011 through 2016, Paramount had 12 trip and fall claims due to uneven sidewalks. For 2017 and yearto-date 2018, there have been zero. This is one of the very basic services that a City provides: safe sidewalks. We are very proud that we’re doing this well.

Latest crime Stats

Show Big Decrease

There are plenty of facts, figures, and details about distracted driving, but the California Office of Traffic Safety wants you to know the plain and simple ones:

• 80 percent of vehicle crashes involve some sort of driver inattention.

• Up to 6,000 people nationwide are killed in crashes where driver distractions are involved.

• Talking on a cell phone or texting is the number one source of driver distractions.

Thanks to the hard work, innovative strategies, and committed partnership of the City’s Public Safety Department and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, Paramount has seen a drop in crime consistently over the years. This positive direction is further aided by a strong Neighborhood Watch program and the help of Volunteers on Patrol, all making Paramount a stronger, safer place.

• Texting takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds, long enough to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph. Most crashes happen with less than three seconds reaction time.

In the first half of 2018, for instance, Major Part I crimes in town have seen a dramatic decrease of 16% compared to the same period the year before.

Substantial declines were experienced in burglaries (39%), auto theft (29%), and assaults (10%).

• The act of talking on a cell phone, even hands free, can give you “inattention blindness,” where your brain isn’t seeing what’s right in front of you. You aren’t even aware that you are driving impaired. If you think you can handle both driving and talking on a cell phone or texting, you are kidding yourself and putting us all at risk.

With the burglaries, 63 were commercial/business, 30 were residential. (To get information about the City’s Home Security Rebate Program for residents, you can find a story on the homepage at paramountcity.com.)

In all, through the first two quarters of 2018, Paramount had 842 reported Part I crimes versus 1,008 the year before.

Distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes or mind off the road or your hands off the steering wheel – especially texting and cell phone use, whether hands-free or handheld. Who’s doing it? Most of us. It has been estimated that, at any one time, more than 10 percent of drivers are using a mobile device.

Response times by Sheriff’s deputies remain strong. For emergency calls, ar-

the law. It’s there for a reason. Also, do your best to eliminate distractions:

• Never text and drive.

• Turn off your phone when you get behind the wheel.

• Don’t text or call someone when you know they are likely to be driving.

• Make a pact with your family, spouse, and caregivers never to use the phone with kids in the car.

• No eating or drinking while driving.

• Don’t program your GPS, MP3 player, or other devices while driving.

• Pull over and stop to read maps.

• No grooming.

• No reading.

• No watching videos.

• Try not to get too involved with pas sengers.

• If something falls to the floor, pull over before trying to reach it.

rival time is an average of 3.3 minutes, on priority calls, 8.9 minutes. On routine calls, the timing is 37.4 minutes. These figures all compare favorably to other cities served by the Sheriff’s Department in the region.

annual National Night out in Paramount

Paramount has its own dedicated District Attorney – Kelly Tatman – who works out of the Sheriff’s Station. Her duties include making sure that criminal investigations and prosecutions in town receive full attention and don’t fall through the cracks at the larger County D.A.’s Office.

Speaking of Neighborhood Watch and Volunteers on Patrol, Paramount residents who take part in these programs will be recognized on Monday, August 6 during the annual National Night Out (NNO) dinner. NNO is a crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

Tatman has been visiting a class of 36 students at Jefferson School as part of Project LEAD. The program, which goes into the classroom once a week for 20 weeks during the school year, uses volunteers like Tatman from the D.A.’s Office to teach fifth-graders about the law and help them recognize the social and legal consequences of criminal behavior.

Those in attendance at the event will include City Councilmembers, Public Safety Commissioners, Public Safety staff, and Sheriff’s personnel.

Sadly, too many young people first become acquainted with the justice system as delinquents. Project LEAD is designed to avoid that scenario.

NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness by supporting local law enforcement programs and strengthening neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships. Cities from all 50 states participate.

The class from Jefferson recently went on a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance. (They will also go to a local courthouse). In addition, Project LEAD’s curriculum includes speakers connected to the criminal justice system and a mock trial involving either drug selling or gun possession on campus. Stu dents are assigned roles and argue a criminal case to a jury consisting of other students.

At the end of the program, the kids will participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate of completion from the D.A.’s Office at a meeting of the Paramount

10 Types of content Marketing to Promote Your Business

Katharine Paljug is a freelance content creator and editor who writes for and about small businesses. In addition to Business News Daily, her articles can be found on Your Care Everywhere, She Knows, and YFS Magazine. Visit her website at http://www. katharine-writes.com to access her free library of resources for small business owners, or follow her on Twitter as @kpaljug. Content marketing is a form of indirect marketing that makes use of the way people search for and share information on the internet. It involves the creation of online material, usually written, visual or video, that is related to your brand.

Content marketing is not the hard sell. You never say “Buy this!” when using content marketing. Instead, it creates interest in and knowledge about your brand by sharing information of value to your customers. It is also search-engine friendly, which helps customers find you online.

In the world of the internet, content marketing can stimulate interest in your brand, get the word out about your business and develop relationships with current or potential customers. To develop an effective content strategy, try these 10 types of content marketing.

1. Infographics

An infographic, such as a flow chart or

Ask The Expert

diagram, represents data or information. It is usually made up of a both a visual and written component.

Infographics are popular because they are easy to read and understand. Because they are a single, self-contained piece of information, they can also be linked or shared quickly. To ensure that your infographic markets your company, mark it with your business name, your social media handle and/or a link to your website where interested customers can learn about its content.

Where to use infographics: blog posts, social media, web pages, guest posts, email

2. Video

When it comes to content marketing, video isn’t for creating an advertisement or commercial. Instead, think of it as a way to show who the people behind the company are, or to respond directly and authentically to customer concerns and questions.

By creating videos that show a personal side of your business, you create a relationship with your customers while also providing them valuable advice, insight or humor. Video is also easy to share and provides a break from written content.

Where to use video: web pages, blog posts, social media, video platforms (such as YouTube), email

3. White paper

A white paper is an authoritative report that explains an issue or provides comprehensive information. When you create a white paper as a form of content marketing, you establish yourself as an expert, while

Property tax relief for small business owners

The ability to assist taxpayers and provide meaningful service to the public are some of the most gratifying aspects of serving as Assessor of the nation’s most populous county.

For instance, while California assessors are tasked with identifying and appraising property for taxation purposes, this work serves as the foundation for a property tax system that supports vital local services such as education and public safety. Last year alone, the combined value of Los Angeles County’s 2.56 million assessments was a record $1.474 trillion, generating $14 billion for our 88 cities, 81 school districts, 35 departments of county government, and numerous special districts.

This is also why I am so proud of my initiative to relieve tens of thousands of small businesses of the business personal property tax burden. As a direct result of the reform I championed, small business owners across Los Angeles County received more than $3.4 million in annual tax relief.

Under Proposition 13, businesses pay a business personal property tax based on the value of machinery, equipment, and furniture used in the operations of the enterprise. Many of these businesses are required to file a business personal property statement, but the task of preparing and filing these statements can be a time-consuming, costly burden. For county government, the expense of processing the lowest of these statements is more than twice what is actually collected in property taxes.

To both alleviate this burden on small business and achieve greater efficiency, I proposed raising the minimum threshold for reporting and paying the business personal property tax from $2,000 to $5,000. With the support of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, an estimated 50,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs were altogether relieved of this burden and removed from the tax roll.

Small businesses are an essential part of our communities. In every neighborhood across Los Angeles County, there are hundreds of small, locally-owned establishments that provide some of our most valued services and products. From cafes and bakeries, to hardware stores and auto repair shops, these small businesses meet the essential needs of those who make up our neighborhoods while at the same time providing necessary jobs and economic well-being.

Eliminating this type of inefficiency for our local businesses is not only good for consumers and local economies, but it also helps to raise efficiency and productivity for county government. As Assessor, I will continue to offer innovative solutions that support local jobs and the economy, while fairly and accurately assessing property.

Assessor Jeffrey Prang was elected in 2014 as the 27th Assessor of the County of Los Angeles. He represents nearly 11 million residents, with a staff of 1,400 across six offices. He leads the largest public assessment agency in the United States and is responsible for the valuation of 2.56 million parcels valued in 2017 at $1.474 trillion.

responding in depth to customer concerns and questions.

White papers can be on any topic relating to your industry. They are especially useful for businesses that work in more technically demanding fields, providing an opportunity to dive deep into a topic that interests your audience.

Where to use white papers: free downloads, online brochures, web pages, industry websites

4. Case study

A case study is a detailed report on a particular person or groups’ experience, often incorporating research and documenting change over time. But case studies don’t have to be dry and technical; many are often conversational and inspiring.

Using a case study for content marketing allows you to highlight the experience your customers have with your business, exploring in-depth how your products or services can solve problems.

Where to use case studies: guest posts, blog posts, free downloads, web pages, video, email, social media

5. Product review

When reviewing products for content marketing, don’t focus on your own business. This can come across as self-promotional, which isn’t the purpose of content marketing.

Instead, review products from related businesses that your ideal customers would be interested in. When you share product reviews, you provide helpful information to your audience, which creates trust between them and your brand. You also add relevant search terms to your website, which can help customers find your business through online search.

Where to use product reviews: social media, blog posts, web pages, video

6. Interview

Interviews can be with a number of people, including loyal customers, industry leaders or your own employees. Sharing an interview provides both interesting content and a sense of personal connection.

When you interview a client, you reward them for loyalty and show how you value their experience.

Sharing interviews with your own employees puts a face and a personal story on your brand. Interviewing leaders in your industry also widens your audience, creates opportunities for networking and adds to your own reputation.

Where to use interviews: email, blog posts, video, social media, guest posts

7. Checklist

A checklist is straightforward to put together and can be easily shared and

used. Checklists can be on any topic related to your business or your customers’ interests. They are extra valuable if they give your customers concrete actions to take that improve their lives or solve a specific problem. If your checklist is in graphic form, it will be easy to share, so it is important to brand it with your company name, website and social media handles.

Where to use a checklist: infographic, blog post, web page, free download, email

8. Research

A write-up of a study or survey, whether your own or someone else, provides valuable information that is of interest to your customers. Writing or talking about new research not only establishes you as an industry expert, it can also add valuable search terms to your website or social media platforms, allowing people interested in that research to find you online.

If you conduct the research yourself, you can also use your results to pitch a story to journalists or other media platforms, which increases your brand’s exposure. If you are writing about someone else’s research, you should always credit and link back to the original source.

Where to use research: blog posts, guest posts, video, email, social media, web pages, company bios, press releases

9.

Industry news

Sharing industry news allows you to capitalize on trending topics while also showing off your expertise and relevance to your larger industry. When you share current news, you position yourself as a go-to source that customers and other industry players can turn to for information.

Industry news can include upcoming events, changes or development. You can also spotlight new players in the industry, call attention to emerging trends or discuss how government policies will affect your business and customers.

Where to use industry news: email, web pages, press release, video, social media, blog posts

10. Newsletter

A newsletter is an excellent place for content marketing because it goes directly to an interested group of current or potential customers.

A newsletter feels exclusive because it is not public, and you can motivate sign-ups and reward members by sharing content that they won’t see anywhere else. It allows you to develop a loyal, trusting relationship with your subscribers while simultaneously keeping your brand at the top of their minds.

Where to use a newsletter: email
