April In Paramount Is Filled With Activity

“I never knew the charm of spring I never met it face to face I never knew my heart could sing I never missed a warm embrace Till April in Paramount ...”
Yes, it’s April in Paramount, and although the aforementioned lyric – with an affectionate nod to vintage songwriters Vernon Duke and E.Y. Harburg – is actually about the same month in Paris, the charm and color of spring in bloom are certainly no strangers to our town.
April has a full calendar of Cityrelated events in Paramount. Here’s a sampling.
Fun At The Easter Faire
The month kicks off with the City’s annual Easter Faire, with the usual strong turnout of families expected at
Paramount Park on Saturday, April 7. It’s a lovely day in the park for residents to enjoy among friends. The many fun activities, including egg hunts for the kids and the appearance of the Easter Bunny, make this one of the most anticipated City events of the year.
Pride Is In The Air – Nominate a Beautiful House
The Paramount Pride beautification award offers a yearly showcase for residential property owners who add to the quality of life in town by maintaining their homes in a clean, stylish and attractive manner.
The nomination period is now open, and anybody in town can submit a property as long as it’s within the City limits. A team of design professionals will review all of the homes that are nominated and the winners will be recognized by the City Council at its June meeting.
To make a nomination, please call (562) 220-2027 or visit the City’s website at www.paramountcity.com.
Fundraiser Produces College Scholarships
The 9th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser for the Paramount Education Partnership (PEP) will be held on April 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This is a great opportunity for businesses and individuals to give back to the community by helping Paramount students afford a college education. Your financial or prize donations are an
important investment in our town, since students and families improving their educational levels also create a brighter future. It’s also a positive, upbeat way to publicize a business.
All donations will be made to the PEP 501c3 non-profit entity, and will be tax deductible.
The theme of the event will be “Vintage Hollywood” and it will take place at Progress Park Plaza, 15500 Downey Avenue.
If interested in attending, sponsoring or making other contributions, please contact Suleyma Rosales at (562) 2202132 or srosales@paramountcity.com.
Paramount Kids On Earth Day
The City’s STAR After-School Program will again celebrate Earth Day, April 22, during the previous week with numerous activities that highlight the importance and responsibility of “going green.” These will begin with all students filling out an Earth Day Pledge that states: “I pledge to do my part in taking care of the earth. ...” and then include their personal statement.
The kids will also participate in hands-on exercises like campus cleanups, making crafts from recycled materials and reading stories relating to environmentalism.
Each STAR student will receive a commemorative Earth Day t-shirt to increase recognition on their school campus.
In addition, the City held its 4th Annual Earth Day poster contest. There were 1,600 submissions this year from all of the STAR campuses, with the theme being: “Recycle Today For a Better Tomorrow!”
The winning entries were as follows: Zoe Carrillo (1st place, Hollydale, 4th grade, $100), Alexa Medina (2nd place, Alondra Middle, 6th grade, $60) and Hailey Villalta (3rd place, Mokler, 2nd grade, $40). The money awarded to the winners was funded by Cal-Met Services and the City of Paramount.
Congratulations to the finalists. And keep recycling!

New Term As Mayor
It is my honor to be selected by my fellow Councilmembers to take over as the City’s mayor. I thank my colleagues for this great opportunity and look forward to serving our community in this role over the next year.
The Council also elected Gene Daniels as Vice Mayor.
These are times of great change for local government, with many new challenges. But Paramount has faced more daunting ones in the past and we have always risen up to meet them. I know that with the support and participation of this resilient community, which is full of active and committed individuals, we will continue to prosper and progress.
It will be my pleasure to share the City’s
news with you here in this corner of the Pulse Beat throughout my term.
Paramount Champs!
Big time congratulations to the Paramount High School boys soccer team for finishing up another remarkable championship season. Not only did they clinch their third consecutive Division III CIF, Southern Section crown, but they also won the Southern California Division I Regional title for the second time in the last three years. The Pirates have a 21-1 postseason record over that period.
We have a true dynasty in our midst. The Pirates are only the fourth boys sports program in CIF-Southern Section history to pull off the rare “three-peat.”
It’s with great pride that we applaud the talented players and great coaching staff. Such a fine and successful example of teamwork is a fitting, outstanding way to represent our town. It will be awfully exciting to see what happens next year ...
Celebrate National Library Week
April 8-14 is National Library Week, which is observed by all public, school, academic and special libraries throughout the U.S. and celebrates the role libraries play in our communities. To mark the occasion, the Paramount Library will present a special live animal show on Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. featuring the group Paramount Pets. Kids
of all ages and their families are welcome to attend. No reservations necessary. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Paramount Library.
The library will also have a Family Place five-week parent/child workshop featuring local professionals beginning April 18. Registration is required. Please call (562) 630-3171 or visit during open hours for more information.
Every Saturday at 2 p.m., the library offers story time for children. There is also a knit/crochet club, “Hooked on Yarn,” for adults that meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 12 p.m.
The Paramount Library is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Household Hazardous Waste, EWaste Collection Coming to South Gate Park
For toxic materials that can’t be thrown away in the trash, Los Angeles County holds collection events at various locations and has five permanent collection sites. Products include motor oil, anti-freeze, paint, turpentine, pesticides and herbicides, household and car batteries, acid-based cleansers, expired pharmaceuticals, fluorescent light bulbs and more. You can also bring e-waste such as cell phones, computer monitors, TVs, printers and others. This service is free. Also, home-generated sharps like hypodermic needles, syringes, lancets and intravenous needles can be disposed of here.
Locally, there will be a “Roundup” collection on Saturday, April 21 at South Gate Park in South Gate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The park is located at Tweedy Blvd. and Hildreth Ave., and the entrance for the Roundup is on Tweedy.
Bring the items in a sturdy box, preferably in their original labeled containers. There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip. Be prepared to leave the containers and boxes. Remove all other items from your trunk before loading the waste.
To find a full list of what is acceptable, and what is not, and where the other locations are, call 1 (888) CLEAN-LA (1-888253-2652) or visit or www.CleanLA.com.
SEAACA Holding Discounted Adoption Days
Dogs and cats tend to live happier and fuller lives when they have a companion of the same species. In this spirit, Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA) will hold a “Meow Luau” on Saturday, April 14. Cat adoption fees will be discounted 50 percent, making them $30. On top of that, a second cat can be adopted with no additional fees for residents in the SEAACA service area, which includes Paramount.
Then on Saturday, May 19, for the “May We Join Your Family?” event, adult dogs will have a reduced adoption fee of $50 with a second adult dog adoption on the same day at no additional cost.
Responsible pet owners that have adequate room for one or two new furry family members will receive extra incentives on top of the reduced adoption rates at these Super Saturday events:
• 10 pounds of dog or cat food.
• Dog or cat toys.
• Dog or cat collars.
• Information about SEAACA Animal Care and Control.
For more information about these events or about SEAACA, please visit www. seaaca.org or call (562) 803-3301.

Free Rental Property Workshop Coming Up
The next Good Neighbor Program (GNP) – a free seminar for Paramount rental property owners and managers – will be held Saturday, April 28. The workshop will take place at the Clearwater Building in the Civic Center from 10:05 a.m. till 2:30 p.m.
Those attending will receive the program’s certification and seal of approval that can help attract quality tenants.
The classes are offered in conjunction with the Apartment Association of Southern Cities, the Sheriff’s Department and attorneys specializing in landlord/tenant law. Topics include such areas as tenant screening, evicting problem tenants, developing effective rental agreements and recognizing criminal activity, all in an effort to keep a property free of crime.
GNP aims to enhance the quality of life for residents, create higher tenant satisfaction rates and remove unlawful tenants. The effort also increases a property’s long-term profitability for the owner, lowers maintenance costs and establishes close contact between the owner/manager, the City and the Sheriff’s Department. It’s an award-winning program that the City of Paramount has offered for many years and has been utilized by hundreds of property owners in town.
Those who successfully complete the program may receive a one-year free membership in the Apartment Association of Southern Cities and a one-year waiver of their City business license fees.
To RSVP, please call (562) 220-2002.
Beware of, and Avoid, Telemarketing Fraud
When you send money to people you do not know personally or give personal or financial information to unknown phone callers, you increase your chances of becoming a victim of telemarketing fraud.
If you are age 60 or older — and especially if you are an older woman living alone — you may be a special target of people who sell bogus products and services by telephone. Telemarketing scams often involve offers of free prizes, low-cost vitamins, health care products and inexpensive vacations.
If you hear these or similar “lines” from a telephone salesperson, just say “no thank you,” and hang up.
• “You must act ‘now’ or the offer won’t be good.”
• “You can’t afford to miss this ‘high-profit, no-risk’ offer.”
• “You’ve won a ‘free’ gift, vacation, or prize.” But you have to pay for “postage and handling” or other charges.
• “You must send money, give a credit card or bank account number, or have a check picked up by courier.”
• “You don’t need to check out the company with anyone.” The callers say you do not need to speak to anyone including your family, lawyer, accountant, local Better Business Bureau or consumer protection agency.
• “You don’t need any written information about their company or their references.”
It’s very difficult to get your money back if you’ve been cheated over the telephone. Before you buy anything by telephone, remember:
• Never send money or give out personal information such as credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth or social security numbers to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons.
• Don’t buy from an unfamiliar company. Legitimate businesses understand that you want more information about their company and are happy to comply
• Always ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer or charity. If you get brochures about costly investments, ask someone whose financial advice you trust to review them. But beware — not everything written down is true.
• Always check out unfamiliar companies with your local consumer protection agency, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general, the National Fraud Information Center or other watchdog groups.
• Obtain a salesperson’s name, business identity, telephone number, street address, mailing address, and business license number before you transact business. Then verify the accuracy of these items.
• Before you give money to a charity or make an investment, find out what percentage of the money is paid in commissions and what percentage actually goes to the charity or investment.
• Don’t pay in advance for services. Pay services only after they are delivered.
• Be wary of companies that want to send a messenger to your home to pick up money, claiming it is part of their service to you. In reality, they are taking your money without leaving any trace of who they are or where they can be reached.
• Always take your time making a decision. Legitimate companies won’t pressure you to make a snap decision.
• Don’t pay for a “free prize.” If a caller tells you the payment is for taxes, he or she is violating federal law.
• Never respond to an offer you don’t understand thoroughly.
• If you have been victimized once, be wary of persons who call offering to help you recover your losses for a fee paid in advance.
• If you have information about a fraud, report it to local law enforcement agencies such as the Paramount Sheriff’s Station at (562) 220-2002. Information is from the FBI website.

Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention Program

We have had more sightings of the Asian Citrus Psyllid throughout southern California since our citrus news column last month. So it is still very important that you look over your citrus trees on a regular basis – at least monthly, if not weekly. Remember that the Paramount Chamber office has bookmarks and flyers with color photographs of the Asian Citrus Psyllid. Also, you can go to californiacitrusthreat.org to get updated information. If you believe you have seen an ACP in your yard, contact your local nursery or garden center for advice on how to treat and protect your citrus tree. Plus you can call or email Tom Shea, (contact information listed below).
SOME OTHER VARIETIES OF CITRUS TO CONSIDER PLANTING:
Make sure that you are buying a grafted tree from a reputable retail plant nursery licensed by the California Department of
Food and Agriculture.
LEMONS:
These are the “year round citrus” that you can use on a daily basis, whether squeezed over salads, seafood, or used in desserts or drinks. Plant them near the kitchen, so that they are handy to pick and can be used at a moment’s notice. You probably only need one type of lemon, but it’s your yard so ...
Meyer Lemon is a great choice for a homeowner. The tree is smaller, compact, heat tolerant and multi-trunked plus it recovers from frost and freeze well. This hybrid cross of orange and lemon produces a milder, less acidic fruit that is now finding great favor with chefs, as it doesn’t overpower whatever it is used with.
Variegated Pink Eureka Lemon is the one you want for a more tart lemon. It is a very attractive tree with white and green leaves plus white and green stripped fruit. The flesh has bits of light pink. The tree is small 8 to12 feet maximum, unlike the standard Eureka lemon that can easily get out of hand. Eureka is the common store lemon – from Los Angeles, CA, about 1877 (may be the Italian, ‘Lunario’) highly acidic, juicy, a vigorous tree - “A weed to growers” It will require frequent pruning.
Write a Will
By Maria F. Galli State Farm Insurance
562-817-5620
You’ve worked hard to accumulate valuable assets over the years. How do you plan to distribute this property after your death?
It’s important to have a will, regardless of the value of your possessions. This written document instructs how you want assets that pass via your will (money, property and other assets) to be distributed after your death. If you die without a will, your probate assets will be divided according to state law.
Here are some tips for preparing a will:
• Have an attorney draft your will. If you draft your own will, make sure it complies with state law or it could

be invalid.
• Name an executor, whose role is to handle all administrative aspects of the will, including collecting assets, paying all debts and taxes and distributing your estate, according to your wishes.
• List personal property such as artwork, collectibles, jewelry and other personal property that you want to go to specific individuals. Be clear about how you want your assets distributed.
• Do not include funeral preferences in your will because it may not be read until several weeks after your death.
• Review your will every few years and have your attorney make changes as appropriate.
With a little advance preparation, your local insurance or financial service professional will help ensure that your final wishes are handled the way you planned them to be.

Top 10 Tips for Using Google+
BY RIEVA LESONSKY
Have you tried Google+ yet? There is still a lot of mystery surrounding this social media platform and how it affects your business’s search rank in Google. Still, creating a Google+ profile can’t hurt your business—and it just might help. Here are 10 tips to get you started.
1. Create a personal Google+ profile. Google+ offers business profiles too, but you need a personal profile first. Signing up is free. Fill in your personal page with as much information as you can about yourself, your business and what you do.
2. Create a Google+ business page. Provide as much information as you can about your business. Consider what potential customers might want to know, including your business address, directions, hours and phone number, photos of your location or product photos.
3. Create circles. Google+ allows you to categorize different people into “circles” and specify which information you share with a particular circle. You can create circles for clients, potential clients, employees, business associates and more; you can also include people in more than one circle.
4. Go public. In addition to posting content to specific circles, you can also post it to the public. This means it will show up when someone does a Google search. Public posts are a great way to expand your audience by exposing your business to people who may never have heard of you.
5. Be engaging. Before posting anything to Google+, consider how it will benefit your audience. Content that gets attention usually includes questions, calls to action, photos or videos, or thought-provoking comments. Try to limit directly promotional posts about your business to about 10 or 20 percent of what you post.
6. Interact. The more you interact on Google+, the faster you build connections and increase your audience. In addition to posting your own content, share and comment on others’ posts (you’ll see them in your Stream). When you share something, credit the originator and add your own thoughts to spark further conversation.
7. Add video. Since Google+ is integrated with YouTube (which is owned by Google), putting video on Google+ can attract more followers. Post how-to videos explaining how to use your product or service, or interview someone on your team about a current industry trend.
8. Promote it. Use the Google+ logo and/ or the +1 icon on your website, signage and marketing materials to help people find you on Google+. Download Google+ logos and icons and learn how to use them at http://www.google. com/+/business/brand-guidelines.html.
9. Measure results. The free Google Analytics tool can help you measure engagement on your Google+ page. See who is following your business, what information they like best and what they’re sharing.
10. Use third-party tools. Looking for tools
to help integrate your Google+ account into the rest of your social media plan? Currently, only a few tools exist, but more are being developed all the time. Visit http://www.google.com/+/ business/3rdpartytools.html to find third-party tools and get updates.
