The Safe and Smart Fair will be at Paramount Park on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This yearly event is one of the highlights of Paramount’s Education Month, a celebration of the importance of learning held each September. Booths will be in place for all Paramount Unified School District campuses and local colleges and trade schools will spread the news about what they offer students.
U.S. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez will set up a “College Prep” booth that will feature tips on applying for financial aid and be staffed with bi-lingual personnel speaking English and Spanish. For the “Safe” portion of the day, public safety agencies and safety-related businesses will also share their services and employment information.
There will be music and entertainment besides all the facts and figures. So come on out and enjoy a Safe and Smart day. For more information, call (562) 220-2121.
With soaring gas prices, any bit of information on how to make those gallons last longer could be helpful. Here are some tips from the Auto Club.
• Avoid rapid acceleration; it consumes a lot of gas while relatively little fuel is required to maintain speed.
• Do not warm engine up before driving; it is not necessary, even in cold weather.
• Reduce the use of your air conditioner at low driving speeds. But when driving over 40 mph the air conditioner uses less fuel than having windows open.
• Replace air and fuel filters regularly as instructed by your vehicle’s maintenance manual. Have the air filter checked each time you change the oil.
• Keep engine properly tuned. An out-of-tune vehicle has to work harder, using more fuel.
• Keep tires properly inflated and wheels aligned. Check your tires once a week for accurate pressure. Follow the tire pressure rating in your owner's manual and check pressure when tires are cold. Under-inflated tires will reduce mileage.
• Do not use mid-grade or premium-grade gasoline unless specified for your vehicle.
• Plan your driving, combining errands into a single trip.
• Don’t speed. Besides being illegal and unsafe, speeding reduces gas mileage.
• Avoid hard braking and sudden stops. Anticipate your stops by letting up on the gas pedal before you need to brake.
• Remove extra weight from the car; 100 extra pounds may cost one mpg. Pack lightly for trips.
• Try to avoid using roof racks, which create drag, and remove them when they are not in use.
• Use cruise control on highway trips.
• For any stop you expect to last more than a minute, shut off your engine rather than letting it idle.
