MURRIETA HOT SPRINGS ROAD
WIDENING PROJECT STARTING SOON
Exciting changes are on the way for Murrieta Hot Springs Road. This major infrastructure project will widen the roadway from four lanes to six lanes between Margarita Road and Winchester Road (SR79), helping to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
The $15 million project includes the addition of a new traffic signal, sidewalks, bike lanes, street lights, and other key infrastructure improvements to enhance safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
The City is proud to announce the completion of two exciting improvement projects enhancing accessibility, aesthetics, and recreation.
PARKING LOT AND MONUMENT PROJECT
This project included the construction of new ADA-accessible parking north of Town Square Park, complete with lighting and landscaping enhancements. A new downtown entry monument has also been installed at the southwest corner of Kalmia and Jefferson. The monument features two large static video boards and new landscaping along Kalmia from Jefferson to Adams. Additional drainage improvements were made to prevent ponding of stormwater near Memorial Way and Kalmia. The project involved grading, new walkways, ADA access improvements, lighting, and landscaping.
TOT LOT PHASE 1
Phase 1 of the Tot Lot Project is now complete, bringing new energy to the park’s playground areas. The project replaced aging equipment with new play structures. It also added engineered wood chip surfaces, accessible walkways, seating areas, concrete footings, and improved drainage to meet safety and accessibility standards.

Fire safety is a critical aspect of protecting lives, property, and the environment from one of the most destructive hazards. Fires can spark and spread in seconds, making preparation and prevention more than just good practice, it’s a lifesaving necessity. It starts with simple, powerful steps: install and regularly check your smoke alarms, create and rehearse a home evacuation plan, and make sure you know how to use a fire extinguisher. Spotting and eliminating fire hazards, such as overloaded outlets or unattended candles, can make a big difference in reducing risks.
Fire safety isn’t just for the home. Whether you’re at work, school, or out in the community, staying alert and ready to act can help prevent disaster and save lives. Let’s build a culture of preparedness together. By prioritizing fire safety, we can prevent tragedies and foster a culture of vigilance and preparedness. Stay informed. Stay safe. PREVENTING ILLEGAL FIREWORKS HAZARDS
Summer is here and we want to remind everyone to stay safe and enjoy the season!
A quick but important note: all fireworks are illegal in Riverside County, including Murrieta, under local codes. This includes sparklers, fountains, Roman candles, aerial fireworks, and everything in between.
Fireworks can cause serious injuries and spark dangerous fires, especially when vegetation is dry this time of year. In addition to facing fines, individuals caught using illegal fireworks may also be held responsible for fire suppression costs, which can run into the millions!
Let’s protect our community, keep our fingers safe, and save our money by skipping illegal fireworks. Wishing everyone a safe and fun summer!
BE A LIFESAVER
DROWNING PREVENTION & WATER WATCHERS
Water activities are a quintessential part of California living, but demand vigilance. Drowning is a leading cause of preventable death, and active supervision is key. Designate a Water Watcher – an adult whose sole responsibility is to constantly watch those in and around the water. Eliminate distractions like phones and ensure barriers like fences and self-latching gates are in place around pools. Let’s make every splash a safe one. Please stop by our Fire Administration office for a complimentary Water Watcher lanyard.
PROTECT YOUR HOME
THE IMPORTANCE OF DEFENSIBLE SPACE AND ZONE 0
With fire season a constant concern in Southern California, creating defensible space around your home is paramount. This involves reducing vegetation and other flammable materials to create a buffer zone. The most critical area is Zone 0, the “emberresistant zone.” This 0-5 foot area directly adjacent to your home requires non-combustible materials like rock, concrete, and metal. Protecting this zone reduces the risk of embers igniting your home during a wildfire. Take action now to fortify your property.
SNIFFING OUT SAFETY
How Murrieta Police Department’s First Certified Firearms K9 is Revolutionizing Community Protection
You may already know about narcotics detection dogs, explosive detection dogs, and search and rescue dogs, but have you heard about the latest pup on the block—a firearms and ammunition detection dog?
Meet Kyra: The Firearm Detection K9
In a world where crime-fighting techniques are constantly evolving, a new star has emerged on the scene. Kyra, the Murrieta Police Department’s first certified firearms and ammunition detection K9. She is trained to sniff out firearms, ammunition, and various types of gunpowder. In total, she can detect seven different odors, making her the “bark” of the town!
Kyra completed a rigorous 12-week training program that was no “walk in the park.” She logged 164 hours of training and conducted an impressive 1,976 searches, proving that she’s really on the case when it comes to keeping the community safe!
Since becoming certified, Kyra has been deployed on numerous high-stakes calls. From executing search warrants to conducting probation searches. In one particularly tense call, she assisted with a report of an armed individual. Throughout these missions, Kyra played a crucial role in uncovering several weapons, showcasing her keen senses and skills in the field.
This fearless pup is proving that when it comes to protecting and serving, you can always count on her to rise to the occasion! With Kyra, the future looks promising for enhanced safety and security in Murrieta.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Loyda Rodriguez
Loyda Rodriguez, 99, visits the Murrieta Senior Center almost every day. “This is my second home,” she says with a smile.
Loyda fills her days with meaningful activities. In the mornings, she crochets items for hospice patients while chatting with friends. She’s also a regular in classes like chair yoga and chair tai chi, and often enjoys a walk on the treadmill.
“I feel like I have something to do that day or the next day,” she shares.
What makes the Senior Center so special to her? Beyond the caring staff, it’s her friends.
“All my friends are here… here I can talk, I can laugh, I can cry if I have to, and maybe kick someone once in a while,” she jokes, bringing warmth and laughter to those around her.”
For many, the Senior Center is more than a place to spend time. It’s a place of connection and support. “There are many people who need someone to just listen to them,” Loyda says. And yes, she really is 99. “People always tell me, ‘No, you are not 99 years old,’” she laughs.
Her outlook is inspiring. She believes in staying active and listening to her body. In her mind, age is just a number. “If I feel good, I can do whatever I want.”
