The Monroe Parks and Recreation team strives to provide quality recreation facilities and programs that promote healthy and active living opportunities for our residents. Throughout this Program Guide you will find a variety of offerings for all ages and fitness levels.

At our facilities you can enjoy golf, swimming, athletic programs and leagues, fitness classes, senior programs and much more. Day Camps, After School and educational programs are offered year round at many of our facilities. Spend some time in one of our parks

picnicking and enjoying the playground with your children. Explore our downtown area as you enjoy a walk or run on our Greenway.

VIBE COMMUNITY TENNIS Dickerson Recreation Complex Tennis Courts AGES: 6 – 12 DATES: Mondays; 6/15, 7/20, 8/17 TIME: 10:00 am – 11:00 am COST: FREE Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is introducing the sport of tennis to this community by offering this program to those interested in improving his/her knowledge about the game. We are committed to offering a variety of classes, camps and lessons that are created to ensure a fun and safe environment that focuses on the fundamentals of the sport.

Our goal is to cultivate a learning environment that will help kids fall in love with tennis.

KINDERSPORTS Dickerson Community Center AGES: 3–5 DATES: Saturdays; 5/30, 6/13, 6/27, 7/11, 7/25 TIME: 10:00 am – 11:00 am COST: $5.00 per session; minimum of 4 participants Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce KinderSports, an enrichment sports program for children ages 3-5 to learn the absolute basics of sports through play and experience. KinderSports is designed to spark children’s interest in a variety of sports and activities throughout a total of 5 sessions. Each session will strive to help children develop hand/eye coordination through activities that promote cooperation, team work and sportsmanship.

COACHING

BASEBALL, BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL, AND TRACK & FIELD

4 & 5 - INSTRUCTIONAL DIVISIONS Introduces new players to a specific sport, and begins teaching the basic skills associated. Focus is on skill development and fun. Rules are modified to present optimum playing experience.

Practices and games are held together on week nights and Saturdays.

5&6/7&9 DEVELOPMENTAL DIVISIONS Begins developing fundamentals for each specific sport. Rules are modified to present the optimum playing experience for novice participants. Practices and games are on week nights and Saturdays.

The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department relies heavily on volunteer youth sport coaches to help provide our participants with quality recreational experiences. Anyone interested in volunteering as a head or assistant coach should contact Rae Moore at 704.282.4663 or rlmoore@monroenc.org.

Volunteers are always needed! All volunteers must undergo a background screening prior to the start of each sport specific season.

10 & 12 DIVISIONS Builds on basic fundamentals for each sport. Rules are slightly modified to present the optimum playing experience for participants with limited exposure.

Practices and games are on week nights and Saturdays.

13 & 15 DIVISIONS Designed to promote teamwork, sportsmanship and advance fundamental development. Little to no rule modifications. Practices and games are on week nights and Saturdays.

COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES: • Be organized and prepared for practices and games.

Practice guidelines are provided if needed.

• Communicate and keep all parents informed about practices, games, pictures, etc.

• Know the rules regarding the sport in which you are coaching.

• Remember winning will NEVER be the main focus of our youth leagues.

• Teach the fundamentals of the game, help the children establish a sense of teamwork, and always remember to have fun!

• Head coaches will receive reimbursement for registration fee at the conclusion of the season for their child (one per Head Coach) It is the coach’s responsibility to notify Monroe Parks & Recreation if he/she does not receive the reimbursement check within one (1) month after the season ends.

Promoting safety awareness, self-discipline, physical fitness, self-confidence and lots of fun, this course for children is designed for self-defense purposes emphasizing child safety awareness. This is not a class on bullying tactics, instead the focus is on self-discipline rather than aggression. A certified black belt will teach various basic self defense techniques and forms. No physical contact is allowed in the beginner classes.

Students completing the course with perfect attendance will receive a medal.

PROBLEM SOLVERS 13 – 18 Thursdays in April 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm Teens will learn the path to resolving conflict and be given problem-solving tools that will help them on their journey after high school. Participants will be exposed to several fun problems and will work together to find solutions to these obstacles. They will learn how their ability to solve difficult problems impacts their vision for their future. This program is designed to teach teens how to work as a team and find creative ways to solve problems and reach goals.
