The Monroe Parks and Recreation team strives to provide quality recreation facilities and programs that promote healthy and active living opportunities for our residents.

Throughout this Program Guide you will find a variety of offerings for all ages and fitness levels. At our facilities you can enjoy golf, swimming, athletic programs and leagues, fitness classes, senior programs and much more. Day Camps, After School and educational programs are offered year round at many of our facilities. Spend some time in one of our parks picnicking and enjoying the playground with your children. Explore our downtown area as you enjoy a walk or run on our Greenway. Or, if you prefer indoor activities, our Aquatics and Fitness Center has something for everyone. COACHING The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department relies heavily on volunteer youth sport coaches to help provide our participants with quality athletic experiences. Anyone interested in volunteering as a head or assistant coach should contact Rae Moore at 704.282.4663 or rlmoore@monroenc.org.

Volunteers are always needed! All volunteers must undergo a background screening prior to the start of each sport specific season.

COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES: • Be organized and prepared for practices and games. Practice guidelines are provided if needed.

• Communicate and keep all parents informed about practices, games, pictures, etc.

• Know the rules regarding the sport in which you are coaching.

• Remember winning will NEVER be the main focus of our youth leagues.

• Teach the fundamentals of the game, help the children establish a sense of teamwork, and always remember to have fun!

• Head coaches will receive reimbursement for registration fee at the conclusion of the season for their child (one per Head Coach).

BELK TONAWANDA PARK: PHASE 1-B

BELK TONAWANDA PARK: PHASE 1-B Belk Tonawanda Park, which is located in Downtown Monroe, has been a focal point of the City’s park system for years. This community park has hosted numerous special events, as well as, provided a special place for birthday parties, family reunions and picnics.

Recently, the Bearskin Creek Greenway connected this park to Downtown Monroe, the Union County Farmer’s Market and Don Griffin Park. The greenway, which runs along Bearskin Creek, allows users to enjoy their walk in the midst of a natural area full of the beautiful flora and fauna indigenous to the Monroe area.

Monroe Parks and Recreation is excited to announce new additions coming soon to Belk Tonawanda Park. After months of planning and gathering information from our community, the Parks and Recreation Department was able to determine which new additions would be the best fit at this park. In conjunction with a matching grant secured through the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, the City of Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department will be able to provide our community with several new and engaging amenities.

The Belk Tonawanda Renovation project will include an approximately 2200 square foot splash pad, picnic shelter, restroom, outdoor exercise station, additional paved trails, and permanent outdoor cornhole boards and tennis tables. Stay tuned for more information on this renovation project.

Her Time to Play is a national initiative that is dedicated to championing change on behalf of girls and women, providing them with ways to connect, collaborate and actively engage with one another through the game of basketball.

These camps are created as an introduction to each sport. If you are a first time athlete or unsure if you would enjoy a particular sport, try it out here first. Camps are scheduled to take place during registration months. We will provide an opportunity to register for a youth sports league at the end of each camp.

This program offers children ages 2-4 introductory sport lessons.

Focus is on skill development and fun. Rules are modified to present optimum playing experience. Practices and games are held together on week nights and Saturdays.

5 & 6 / 7 & 9 DEVELOPMENTAL DIVISIONS Begins developing fundamentals for each specific sport. Rules are modified to present the optimum playing experience for novice participants. Practices and games are on week nights and Saturdays.

PARENT’S CODE OF CONDUCT

PLAYER’S CODE OF CONDUCT

The overall success of the youth athlete is highly dependent on parental involvement and example. Parents play a critical role in shaping and supporting the athlete and respective success levels. As such, parents of youth players in Monroe Parks and Recreation Youth Athletic Leagues must also commit to a code of conduct. Inclusions of the Parent Code of Conduct are:

• I hereby pledge to be positive about my youth sports experience and accept responsibility for my participation by following this Code of Conduct.

• I hereby pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for all children participating in youth sports by following this Code of Conduct.

• I will attend every practice and game that I can, and will notify my coach if I cannot.

• I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches and officials at every game, practice or other youth sports events.

• I will expect to receive a fair amount of playing time.

• I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my child and other children ahead of any personal desire to win.

• I will insist that my child play in a safe and healthy environment.

• I will encourage good sportsmanship from fellow players, coaches and parents at every game and practice by demonstrating good sportsmanship.

• I will do my best to listen and learn from my coaches.

• I will treat my coaches, other players, officials and fans with respect regardless of race, creed or abilities and I will expect to be treated accordingly.

• I deserve to have fun during my youth sports experience and will alert my parents and coaches if it stops being fun.

• I will provide support for coaches and officials working with my child to provide a positive, enjoyable experience for all.

• I deserve to play in an environment that is free from drugs, tobacco and alcohol and expect adults to refrain from their use at all youth events.

• I will demand a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free sports environment for my child and agree to assist by refraining from their use at all youth sports events.

Participants will be exposed to cultural activities through community partnerships in a fun and safe environment. Students are welcome to walk to these centers from their normal drop-off spot. SENIOR GAMES Local seniors 50 years of age and better are encouraged to participate in the 2022 United Senior Games program which involves a variety of Sports and SilverArts. United Senior Games will take place in April/May and local winners have a chance to qualify for the North Carolina Senior Games. For information call 704.282.4657.

he Ellen Fitzgerald Senior Center has played an important role within the City of Monroe Parks and Recreation Department for many years. The facility has provided wonderful programs to citizens aged 55 and better within a quant and cozy facility. Programs have included woodworking, dance classes, pottery, ceramics, social programs, cards and much more! The facility has seen so many wonderful people come through its doors!

Over the years, the facility has seen positive growth to where space is becoming difficult to manage. However, the desire of our citizens to utilize this facility remains!

In July of 2021, Monroe City council approved funding in the amount of $3.5 million dollars to renovate the Enquirer Journal building in to a new and improved active living center for citizens 50 and better. The new facility will include state of the art audio visual equipment, a beautiful new multi-purpose room for aerobics and exercise needs, a fitness room, computer lab, several arts and crafts rooms, as well as, a cozy lobby with a coffee bar.

Also included in the renovation is a large multi-purpose room that will provide awesome social gatherings and rental opportunities for the community. The Parks and Recreation Department is very excited to provide this new amenity to our senior population. Construction is underway for this project and we hope to open the doors to a beautiful newly renovated facility soon! The facility is located off of Old Charlotte Highway across the street from Fire Station #1.
