The Monroe Parks and Recreation team strives to provide quality recreation facilities and programs that promote healthy and active living opportunities for our residents. Throughout this Program Guide you will find a variety of offerings for all ages and fitness levels.

At our facilities you can enjoy golf, swimming, athletic programs and leagues, fitness classes, senior programs and much more. Day Camps, After School and educational programs are offered year round at many of our facilities. Spend some time in one of our parks

picnicking and enjoying the playground with your children. Explore our downtown area as you enjoy a walk or run on our Greenway.

We have combined two awesome sports to create a new approach to soccer and golf!

COACHING The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department relies heavily on volunteer youth sport coaches to help provide our participants with quality recreational experiences. Anyone interested in volunteering as a head or assistant coach should contact Rae Moore at 704.282.4663 or rlmoore@monroenc.org.

Volunteers are always needed! All volunteers must undergo a background screening prior to the start of each sport specific season.

COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES: • Be organized and prepared for practices and games.

Practice guidelines are provided if needed.

• Communicate and keep all parents informed about practices, games, pictures, etc.

• Know the rules regarding the sport in which you are coaching.

• Remember winning will NEVER be the main focus of our youth leagues.

• Teach the fundamentals of the game, help the children establish a sense of teamwork, and always remember to have fun!

• Head coaches will receive reimbursement for registration fee at the conclusion of the season for their child (one per Head Coach) It is the coach’s responsibility to notify Monroe Parks & Recreation if he/she does not receive the reimbursement check within one (1) month after the season ends.

KINDERSPORT CAMPS

MODIFIED YOUTH SPORTS INSTRUCTIONAL CAMPS ONLINE REGISTRATION REQUIRED. AGES: 5 – 12 TIME: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm FEE: $15.00 per session or $50.00 for all sessions.

These camps are created as an introductory camp to a sport.

If you are a first time athlete or unsure if you would enjoy a particular sport, try it out first in our instructional camp. Camps are scheduled to take place during registration months. We will provide an opportunity to register for a youth sports league at the end of each camp! Camp schedule, including cancellations, are subject to change based on COVID-19 guidelines.

PARENT’S CODE OF CONDUCT The overall success of the youth athlete is highly dependent on parental involvement and example. Parents play a critical role in shaping and supporting the athlete and respective success levels. As such, parents of youth players in Monroe Parks and Recreation Youth Athletic Leagues must also commit to a code of conduct. Inclusions of the Parent Code of Conduct are: • I hereby pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for all children participating in youth sports by following this Code of Conduct.

• I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches and officials at every game, practice or other youth sports events.

• I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my child and other children ahead of any personal desire to win.

• I will insist that my child play in a safe and healthy environment.

• I will provide support for coaches and officials working with my child to provide a positive, enjoyable experience for all.

• I will demand a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free sports environment for my child and agree to assist by refraining from their use at all youth sports events.

• I will remember that the game is for children and not for adults.

• I will do my very best to make youth sports fun for my child.

• I will treat players, coaches, fans, and officials with respect regardless of race, sex, creed or ability.

CITY OF MONROE PARTNERS WITH UCPS AND UA TO PROVIDE REMOTE LEARNING SITES

F

or many families, remote learning has been a challenge. But with every challenge, there is an opportunity.

During the summer of 2020, Union County Public Schools and the City of Monroe discussed how to eliminate barriers for families with internet challenges. The city offered to open four of its recreation sites to give students a safe, supervised and comfortable space for virtual classes.

“It was hard because we weren’t able to do our work on our computers like we were supposed to,” said Lydia Casteen. “So we had to go to the library to do our work.”

“I participate in live meetings. I watch videos, paperwork and I do my assignments that are assigned for me,” said the Parkwood Middle School student. “I can see other people who my teachers have assigned to help me do my work. And sometimes other students can help me by g-mailing me if we’re allowed to do that.”

The city of Monroe says the vision is to provide an opportunity so local students can keep up with their studies away from the classroom.

With Union County Public Schools implementing a hybrid of in person and online classes because of the COVID-19 pandemic, parents and students are adapting to a new schedule.

Lydia, a seventh grader, says unreliable internet connection at home combined with distractions made remote learning difficult at times.

Now, she has found a comfort zone for remote learning at the city’s Sutton Park Recreation Center.

“You have more time. You can do your work here. And it’s more peaceful because when you have siblings at home with you they can sometimes make you get distracted and stuff while you’re doing your work” said Lydia.

Each weekday, about 80 UCPS students who live in Monroe attend classes at four recreation centers in different neighborhoods.

City officials say the goal is to provide structure and better remote learning space.

UCPS is also assisting with technical support and making sure each recreation center has consistent WIFI access to accommodate the number of students at each center.

Recreation centers follow all state guidelines for sanitizing, social distancing, face covering and health screening, including taking students’ temperatures at the door.

The Remote Learning Program takes place at all City of Monroe Parks and Recreation Community Centers and is offered Monday – Friday from 7:30 am – 2:00 pm. On remote learning days, students can visit the centers and work in a safe and supervised environment at no cost. Internet access is available and students should bring their school issued Chromebooks and hotspots.

This program offers a wide range of activities for children to enjoy on a daily basis. We provide fun, educational and cultural activities your child will love! Students have the opportunity to take advantage of homework assistance.

After homework is done, our staff and community partners provide fun and enriching activities to expose students to new and exciting opportunities and broaden their interests!

Opportunities include gardening classes, fine arts, gym games, team building activities and much more!
