This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”, strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
During Fire Prevention Week, the La Porte Fire Department and Fire Marshal's Office team up to visit all elementary schools within La Porte to teach students from Pre-K to the fifth grade about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire.
PRE-K/KINDERGARTEN
The classes are introduced to firefighters as positive role models to seek help from. They are shown various types of bunker gear and air packs to let the child know the different appearances a firefighter has. No matter how a firefighter looks, they are there to help! They are introduced to the definition of an emergency, how to dial 911, and how to stop, drop, and roll
The Fire Marshal's Office Deputies review the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every room and how and when to change the batteries, along with what to do when a smoke alarm sounds Afterwards, the students are able to view the fire trucks and ask questions of the firefighters.
These students get hands-on training about the kinds of extinguishers to explain how to best put out different types of fires. Firefighters provide the third graders with house props and watering can extinguishers to demonstrate putting out a fire
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth graders get to participate in pumper races They are shown how water is accessed from a fire hydrant through the connection of the hoses and nozzles. The students are then paired up to try it themselves in a fun quick race
FIFTH GRADE
Fire Prevention week ends with the fifth graders. The students visit the La Porte Fire Training Field and are shown behind the scenes to see what goes into fighting a fire, from the 911 call coming in to the fire being put out These demonstrations help students connect to their knowledge of fire safety
REPLACE
Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested.

As the holiday season approaches, homes across the country sparkle with festive lights and cozy decorations However, amidst the joy and celebration, it's crucial to prioritize fire safety to ensure a safe and merry season Here are some essential tips to keep your holidays fire-free
Lights: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections Use lights that are tested for safety by a recognized laboratory and avoid overloading circuits.
Candles: Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface and never leave them unattended. Consider using battery-operated candles for a safer alternative
Natural Trees: If you choose a real tree, ensure it's fresh by checking that the needles don’t easily break off Keep the tree well-watered to prevent it from becoming a fire hazard.
Artificial Trees: Choose trees labeled as “flame retardant” and ensure they are set up away from heat sources like fireplaces and heaters
Clean Chimneys: Have your chimney cleaned and inspected before using your fireplace Keep the area around the fireplace clear of decorations and flammable materials.
Space Heaters: Use space heaters according to the manufacturer's instructions and place them on a level surface away from anything that could catch fire
Smoke Alarms: Test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries if needed Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside sleeping areas
Fire Extinguishers: Ensure you have a fire extinguisher readily accessible in the kitchen and know how to use it
Stay Attentive: The kitchen is often a hub of holiday activity, but never leave cooking food unattended Keep flammable items like paper towels or dish cloths away from the stove.
Keep Children Safe: Designate a safe zone for kids away from the cooking area to prevent accidents.
Tree Disposal: After the holidays, dispose of the tree promptly Dry trees are a significant fire hazard and should not be kept around the house
By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy a festive season while keeping your home safe from fire hazards. Wishing you a warm, joyful, and safe holiday season!
October is Domestic October is Domestic Violence Awareness and Violence Awareness and Prevention Month Prevention Month
Awareness and Prevention Month provides an excellent opportunity for the citizens of La Porte and surrounding communities to reduce domestic violence through prevention, education, and increased awareness. We encourage every person to speak when witnessing acts of violence, take time to talk about creating a healthy, respectful, and safe community, and hold perpetrators who commit acts of violence responsible for their actions
Do not let children go trick or treating alone. An adult should accompany young children.
Accompany young children to the door of every house they approach. Stay within sight of the door. Be familiar with every house and with all the people from which the children receive treats.
Children should be warned never to approach any house that is not well-lit and has no porch light on.
Children should be cautioned never to approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless they know the owner and are accompanied by a parent.
Children should be cautioned never to enter any home without prior permission from their parents. Parents should inspect all treats and dispose of anything that has been opened or has never been wrapped, and police should be notified if something has been tampered with.
Children should be advised to run away from people who try to lure them with special treats.
Costumes should be short to prevent tripping. Use light colors and reflective materials.
Try using make-up on the child’s face instead of a mask, as a mask can obstruct a child’s view.
When using facemasks, ensure the child can see and breathe properly and easily.
Make sure that all children carry a glow stick or flashlight and wear reflective clothing.
