SHAPING LA PORTE'S FUTURE
The South Broadway Livable Centers Study Begins this Fall
The City of La Porte, in partnership with the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC), has secured funding to develop a Livable Centers Study for the S. Broadway corridor. This exciting project aims to create a comprehensive roadmap for the area's future.
The study focuses on approximately two square miles of La Porte, stretching from State Highway 146 in the west to Galveston Bay in the east. It's bounded by East Barbours Cut Boulevard to the north and Wharton Weems Boulevard to the south. This area is home to several important community assets, including: La Porte's historic downtown | Sylvan Beach | La Porte High School | Bay Forest Country Club
This new study will build upon previous planning efforts to create a unified vision for the S. Broadway corridor. Key goals include:
Transforming the corridor into a well-connected, mixed-use district.
Improving pedestrian and bicycle safety and connectivity between amenities and neighborhoods.
Identifying gaps in first- and last-mile connectivity for the Harris County Transit System’s bus service.
Evaluating existing zoning and development codes to support:
Pedestrian-friendly streetscapes
Infill development
Adaptive reuse of buildings
Preservation of the area's unique character
Strengthening connections between downtown La Porte and Sylvan Beach, leveraging planned renovations to boost regional appeal.
Once a popular tourist spot in the 1940s, La Porte continues to offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of nearby Houston. The S. Broadway corridor includes key priority opportunity zones identified in the City’s 2023 Comprehensive Plan: Broadway, Main Street, and Sylvan Beach.
This plan is expected to kick off in Fall 2025. Keep an eye on the City's social media channels for opportunities to share your thoughts and help shape the future of La Porte's east side!
